D&D 4e is the Crystal Skull; the one that jumped the shark and shalt never be spoken of in polite company.

Nah, 4e took a great deal of heat back in the day for not being more 3.5, and created an echo chamber because it was the heydays of the internet, which trashed its rep to the point that hating on 4e is meme now.

Which is funny, because it was a flawed but incredibly well thought out edition that has many fans and successor systems. Just look at Lancer, 13th Age, Strike, and even Matt Colville's new game - folks are looking back at what 4e did right and stealing relentlessly.

Even Pathfinder 2e has taken a few points of inspiration (and a dev or two) from 4e, a bit of irony that is not lost to anyone.

Trust me - folks talk about 4e these days. Just not around the more DnD-centric regions.

The thing I dislike about Discord is that if you're using their free service, you have to use the same alias on every server, and I never know when I'm going to have to use one for something work-related. That one stupid limit (and it's intentional on their part to try to drum up revenue) has been a hard stop for me, in general. I'm no product manager, but IMHO, if you want revenue, you have to add value, not create artificial roadblocks.

Actually, it's really easy to get around. If you right-click on the server in question (such as one you've made yourself or anothers') and click "Edit Server Profile", you can change your name for that specific server. Handy if you want to show your character's name instead of your own, or just want to go by something else while putzing around somewhere else. Further changes, like profile pics or even profile details, do require the paid subscription to customize per server.

Note: Myth-Weavers discord insists that you use the same name on the discord as you use here on the forums, for consistency's sake.

Additionally, there's discord bots like Tupper that allow you to switch your name and profile image as you need. It's a bit more work (which I don't much care to do personally, but I know many who do), but it's a thing that's out there.

  3. For me, it's 90% time and energy. I got two young kids, after all, and they suck up a lot of my energy and free time. Also a small dash of depression sucking some of the excess gumption to GM, but I'm mustering some of that back to run for my live group at least.

That said I think much of the reason why people dont run games is GMing is hard.

I kinda disagree on this. Is it easy? No. Is it hard? Only if you let it. It doesn't have to be as difficult or challenging or thankless as it can be, but it certainly can get that way if you allow things to.

Now, does GMing look difficult?  Oh gods, yes, it looks like this daunting task that only the most creative, insane, and masochistic of folks would be willing to do. But if you take the time to learn how to prep effectively and efficiently, it gets easier. And with more experience, GMing gets easier. Also helps to run systems that suit your GMing style.

Technology. I wouldn't be confident with creating and importing maps; images and so forth. Same thing for not trying ... umm ... virtual table tops?

Gonna share a few hot tips with you: you do not need to make maps, let alone pretty maps. When I actually bother with maps of any kind, I make most of mine in MS Paint - they are ugly and simple, but get the job done. And that assumes the game I'm running requires maps. Plus, a lot of tech based stuff is just playing around to find out. Don't let it intimidate you: you are the boss, not it.

Side note: we do have a guide for how to upload images to MW. It's mostly a drag-n-drop business, but there's some range to fiddle around as need be.

  4. BESM d20 was the worst version of the BESM rules, hands down, no contest. And this is comparing it to the original 1st edition rules, which had you rolling for stats then using character points to adjust those values. It was a weak cash grab during the d20 boom, and it was lackluster at best because it didn't try to compensate for the differences of a level based system with a point-buy system, and instead just mashed the two together with zero testing.

BESM proper, like 3e or 4e, or even OVA, would likely do better. Personally, I like BESM 3e the best, but it's a tad crunchy on the CharGen side of things (not drastically, but it helps to have a spreadsheet to do the math), but that's the price for the increased granularity in the customization.

This is a really abstract question, but: I've been trying to get my head around what to do with Spheres of Guile, which appeared after the last time I created a Spheres character. Does anyone know of any really good resources that help you figure out how to use it (websites, for example) in an effective way? My head is spinning and I'm only half-way through the material. I don't want to derail this thread, though, which is why I'm asking for reference material.

It seems to require the GM to do a lot of extra work, such as establishing motivations for NPCs.

So Guile is one of those niche realms much like the Vigilante class, with a lot of hit-or-miss options. That said, I do have a guide that's been floating around the DDS discord. Honestly, it's barely worth dipping into for some of the utility stuff, and maybe a fun option or two, unless you have a very specific concept.

Related to that, the trick with motivations, IMO, is not worry about them except for major NPCs, and winging it if it comes up otherwise. Most minor NPCs will have very basic motivations, ranging from 'survive' to 'protect this' to 'do the job (whatever it might be)' to 'get cash money' and so forth. And that's only if it actually matters to the situation.

So it's explicitly called out that Striker's AC Bonus stacks with Unarmored Training (here in an AMA by the devs and here again on the wiki page), but not with other AC bonuses like Monk's. This makes sense of course, but my question is: does Unarmed Training stack with the Entropic Sage's AC bonus (which is essentially identical to Striker's) given they are two different types of bonus (armor vs untyped)? My Spherecasting Mod is likely to wind up higher than my Con Mod since I will be using magic a lot, but I want to be certain about this. Given the precedent, I think it ought to, but others/the GM may disagree so I'm putting it here.

Striker stands alone with its AC Bonus, as it's a non-scaling bonus, capped by class level, and works with armor (light by default, but striker arts allow it to work with heavier). It's primarily that lack of scaling with level that allows the Unarmored Training to work, which does scale with level. It's honestly a weird exception, and one that I half suspect will be reworked if/when we finally get USoM.

Entropic Sage's AC bonus is bog-standard Monk AC, complete with scaling as you gain levels. This is why Unarmored Training does not work - you don't get to have two separate sources of scaling AC growth.

    The Apothecary

    Basic Info

    Name: Eris Morgana

    Race: Changeling

    Origin: Mantle

    Classes:

    A: Scholar (Doctor)

    B: Prodigy (Exploitant/Battle-Born/Gutter Rat)

Role: Long-range DPS, Scouting, Healing, Support

    Character Sheet: Link coming Soon

    Overview

A poor reincarnated office worker who now operates as a wandering doctor and archer.

    Appearance

Standing at 5'10" with a lithe build, Eris is a humanoid with short blonde hair.

    Personality

Eris is a sharp-tongued individual who's far brighter and snappier than few would expect from her.

    History

It's hard to believe that Eris actually originates from Earth (of some variation), but thanks to strange magic, was reincarnated on the world of Mantle after her death, granted a fresh adult body. She was one of many Revenants, as they were known as on that world, entities summoned to the world to purge it of a great evil known as the Original Revenant and his horde of tainted fiends.

Before her reincarnation, Eris was an accountant with a rather boring life. While she loved to camp and hike, she never felt like her life had much going for it. Her love life was nothing special and nothing really stuck, her family barely talked although supportive, and she never had the courage to do more with herself. It was something she began to regret when a hiking accident left her pinned under a boulder, where she starved to death...

It was then when she found herself in a cosmic field, standing before a goddess of blinding light, who offered her a second chance at life, in exchange for fighting a great evil. Eris took that deal, and found herself in a new body, with new skills as an apothecary. It was an odd skill set, especially for one that should be a warrior, but soon Eris found herself concocting all sorts of medicines and chemicals to use in the battlefield.

At first, Eris took to this divinely mandated challenge, not because she desperately wanted to return to her old life, but because it was something different. But as the years went on, she grew tired of the battles, and simply fell back in the shadows. It wasn't hard, and she was far from the first Revenant who opted to just live their new life, and she began to travel. Her travels proved to be more exciting than the battles before - be it camping in the woods between towns, trying new foods, fighting monsters along the way, meeting new people, healing people for spare change. It was the sort of thing she desperately wanted in her old life.

Then one day, everything changed. Something in the world broke, although nobody could tell exactly what. It was almost like there had been an invisible cage around the world, and it had shattered overnight. But the one thing that Eris could tell, with absolute certainty, was that she could now leave. And that she did - she left Mantle behind by creating a rift with sheer willpower (the first time she could ever use magic of any kind), and found herself in another world. And then another, and another, and another...

It wasn't long after she discovered what this new power was - Gatewalking. Mostly because she encountered another Gatewalker, and was invited to join the Realmwardens. It was the excitement that Eris still craved, so she happily joined...

That is... several layers of horrifying. Hope to god aonprd or d20pfsrd don't get hit with all this. I mean, I have pretty much all the old 1st edition PF books at this point, at least the main books, in pdf or print, but the prds are so damn useful. And I really don't want to imagine what an OGL-less ruleset would look like.

Also, Paizo decided to excise the Dark Elves from Golarion because of this, which is silly since Dark Elves aren't owned by D&D, but... w/e.

Whatever is coming, I think Wotc/Hasbro will try very hard to pretend this isn't actually a 6th edition.

So here's what I've learned over the last months:

    1) Pathfinder 2e Remaster is 90% a refresh of PF2e. Some classes are getting some changes, like Witch and Alchemist, because they were under performers, but most of the game remains the same. Biggest changes include the removal of Ability Scores (just modifiers now) and Alignment is going the way of the dodo as it should have ages ago.  Beyond that, it's mostly terminology changes, like Flatfooted to Off-Guard, or Spell Levels to Spell Ranks, both to avoid OGL connections and a bit of clarity. It's all backwards compatible too, at least everything I've seen thus far (I don't have the PDFs yet, but AoN is updating as time goes on).

NOTE: PF1e is not getting a remaster of any kind, to my knowledge. It'd be too much work for a now completed edition that's been over for several years now, and replacing the OGL in PF1e would be an expensive undertaking that wouldn't be worth the money involved. The same goes for Starfinder, but that's also why we'll get a Starfinder 2e, which will follow PF2e's design.

    2) AoN and d20PFSRD are safe for the time being, even the PF1e portions of them, unless WotC pulls some crap regarding the OGL. It's not likely they will at this point, thanks to all of the hoopla earlier in the year. Paizo has no desire nor reason to force these sites down. Plus, they already promote AoN and give them some money for hosting for being the official SRD, so they not gonna mess with their best resource.

Additionally, AoN will have a separate thing to toggle between original PF2e and Remaster. Original is safe until WotC does something, and even then Paizo will likely fight that since there's very little OGL content (just some terms, really).

    3) Paizo created their own OGL, the ORC. It's basically the same thing, only that Paizo has no control over it, and instead has a lawyer firm that they trust holding control over it, thus preventing themselves from killing the ORC without jumping thru a lot of loops. Apparently, they're taking a page from Linux's own licensing agreement in this idea. From my understanding, it's a mixed bag if you want to publish under it, but Creative Commons is a far more popular option.

    4) Dark Elves aren't quite gutted out, but they've been mostly replaced in the lore. I don't understand the reasoning behind it, although I haven't really heard any, but I suspect it's to further separate Golarion from WotC's settings... Also the dark elves have always been an excessively edgelordy crowd anyhow.

    5) and yeah, WotC does not want to call OneD&D or whatever they're working on right now to be a 6th edition because they very much want you to buy their new books with the understanding that it's all backward compatible... My money is it won't be, but that's marketing for ya.

  9. Always look thru the game ads and apply for the games that interest you. Best way to find a game to play. There's 1 PF2e game ad open currently.

Over the years, I've found that asking for games usually doesn't get you a game unless you have an extensive history and maybe a really cool idea, but even that isn't a set deal. Instead, most GMs just post a game ad for whatever they're looking to run and let the players come to them. Much easier that way.

And, I know there was some recent news about them purging D&D material, but what happened there? Is there a 3e, minus beholders? Or is it like 2.5e?

So a bit of clarity: Remaster is more of a refresh, application of errata, and a few tweaks to some of the under-performing classes (like Witch and Alchemist, IIRC). 90% of the changes is termology based, like Flat-footed being renamed to Off-Guard, or spell names getting really bland and terrible names. If anything, the biggest shake up is the removal of Alignment from the system, which has sparked many arguments online.

That said, if you like crunchy tactical combat, PF2e is peak design, IMO. It manages to be fairly well balanced across the board, well written, consistently designed, and makes playing and running it fairly easy despite the number of rules at play. It helps that a lot of the mechanics are pretty consistent, making it easy to make educated guesses when you have to make judgement calls. But you gotta like tactical combat, because that's the core of the system. Teamwork is critical to its success.

Welcome to the Weave, Amelia. And don't sweat it - many folks come to these forums because they have some personal concerns where talking is a struggle. We get it all too well.

Anyhow, in case you haven't seen it yet, here's a link to our Myth-Weavers v6 User Guide, which contains several handy links that you will likely find useful. We do things a touch differently than some other sites, where we have game ads posted and prospective players apply. You'll want to swing over by our Game Ads section to check that out! Every GM does it a little differently, so check the campaign info and forum for the exact details.

We support a very wide variety of systems here, ranging from good ol D&D (of all editions) to Pathfinder to Shadowrun to Fate to PbtA to OSR to, well, I don't think there's a system we don't support or have players for. So if you spot something outside of your norm that catches your attention - go ahead and apply for it anyways. There is much to be gained by going outside of the box, after all.

  14. In my early days in the hobby, I had two separate jailbreak stories. But only one is really worth telling.

    Jailbreak

A bit of backstory here: I was replacing the player of the party's thief in a game of Earthdawn (the previous player was going to be away for months thanks to work). I had been playing with this group, off-n-on for a couple years now, but it was the first time I played with this specific person as the GM. He had a particular house rule that leveling up involved actual training, and typically you had to find someone to train you up.

This led to me, a thief, trying to find a better thief to train me. This was a massive challenge for the newbie I was, because I was still a relentlessly socially awkward dork who still hadn't gotten the hang of people or roleplaying, and this GM had zero mercy for my awkwardness. In fact, to this day, I believe that he thought he was doing me a favor by pushing me...

Anyhow, my thief ends up putzing around town, the spotlight coming back to me every so often as my character meaders trying to wrack my brain to find a solution (one that my GM had no intention to really point me in the right direction), but eventually I found my way to a seedy bar. Tried to talk up the bartender to find a local thief, and he gives me directions, and tells me to slap some coin onto the counter and ask for their best thief.

So I do just that - I follow the direction, wade right into the building, slap some coins onto the counter, and ask for their best thief. The GM, being the jerk, neglected to tell me that I had just walked into the city guard's HQ and demanded their best thief. Thus, I found myself in jail... Which I promptedly decided that I would not stay the night.

Within an hour or so, I pick the lock to my manacles. My cellmate started haranging me to free him too, and after a bit of quick thinking when a guard came to check up on the noise, I ended up freeing him too. And then pretty much everyone on that wing of the jail. Eventually, the guards check up, and discover a butt-load of prisoners out of their cells, who rush the door.

While I blame the GM for being a jerk and putting me into this situation, this part is all on me. See, I could've just used the chaos I had created to escape. That would've been a fantastic idea, but instead, I beeline for the armory to find my gear... and to steal anything worthwhile as well. Eventually, a clerk trying to escape the chaos finds me, and I opt to make a break for it.

However, with my hands full of stolen gear, the guards were quick to catch up and capture me again. That night, the captain orders that my fingers on my primary hand be cut off past the first knuckle as punishment, since I did free a bunch of people. After the party finally found me and paid my bail, it would be a week later that an infection would form, and my hand would be cut off because of a botched medicine check.

Years later, when I became the forever GM for my group of casual manslaughter vagrants, we had a few great stories that were pure chaos.

The Shadowrun Session Where they Burned Down a McDonalds

The group's entry point into Shadowrun was a module from the SR5e starter box, which was called Food Fight but actually isn't the famous Stuffer Shack shootout. The job was simple enough: Local mob crew had kidnapped a store-owner's daughter because he wasn't paying up the rising protection costs, so the PCs are hired to rescue her. This specific crew uses a totally-not-McDonalds restaurant as a front, and many on the crew work there.

In this case, my players, who are loading up on beer already, head for the burger joint. Once they arrive, they quickly decide that the front door is too much of a problem, and check the back door, which leads right into the office (I did not think about this very much at the moment, I admit). There, the boss is at the desk, who whips around pulling his revolver and demands who they are.

In quick order, initiative is rolled and the following occurs:

Action 1: Adept punches the guy in the face

Action 2: Street Sam pulls cyberspurs and stabs the guy in the leg

Action 3: technomancer (dear chaos why did I allow a techno for my first game?) pulls his gun and shoots him right in the face

Meanwhile, my wife's incredibly mundane raised-by-actual-wolves not-street-samthis, folks, is why I cannot rely on anyone in my live group to provide me backstories...

Also when I learned that my wife hates cyberpunk "Because it's too much like the Matrix".
heads for the door out of the office and cuts off reinforcements. The techno then tries to hack the turrets in the dining area, a bit of mechanics that takes us 20 minutes to resolve because I hadn't quite learned the rulesfurther souring my wife's thoughts on cyberpunk, and on Shadowrun as a whole. She still brings it up from time to time if the topic gets anywhere near it., and fires a burst into open air to scare off customers. Eventually, the mob crew is all killed off, they find the girl, and then set the whole place on fire before the cops show up to destroy any evidence of them being there.

Years later, I'd re-run this module, using Runners in the Shadows, with a few members of the group plus a new one. It was far less destructive, and surprisingly enough, none of the mob were killed (but most got beat up). Which also taught me that I can reuse adventure ideas and they won't know it LOL

That Session of Shadowrun involving Hacking a Forklift, a Grenade Launcher, and Novacoke

For a summer, we had some major scheduling concerns, so this session was only 2 players - the demolition expert and the hacker. I had a pretty good handle on the rules by this point, and understood enough about handwaving that I could get around more annoying aspects (like bouncing explosions).

The job was very very simple: a warehouse had become the hangout for a group of gangers selling drugs out of it. Just far enough from the beaten path that the cops didn't care enough to deal with it, but close enough that the Johnson wanted to get it back, mostly to sell it off.

The PCs go do their legwork, getting a general estimate of their numbers, including one mage, and even tried to talk to them. But not in a 'find somewhere better to hang out' kinda talk, but a 'lets buy drugs' talk.

The next morning, they do the novacoke they bought, roll up on their motorcycles, hack the forklift in the warehouse and use it to impale the mage, hack open the main loading bay, then open fire with SMGs and a grenade launcher. Then stole their drugs before the cops swung by because EXPLOSIONS.

Johnson wasn't happy, because EXPLOSIONS. But they had a boatload of drugs they could pawn off, if they could find a buyer LOL

This was actually the session that I finally learned to embrace the chaos, and just roll with it. Sadly, we moved on from SR proper shortly thereafter, as I had to work out of town for a few months and we never quite came back to it.

I got a few more stories to share, but I think I'll leave it at that for now. It got kinda long anyhow LOL

So again.. what am I missing? I feel simulatenously aggravated and utterly stupid, like 35 years of my thinking about RPGing meant nothing for understanding this game. OR like 50 years of RPG design brought us back to square one: here are some action rules, now make it work; you know, like, do some RPGing, dude.

The best was to answer this is very very simple - you are simply overthinking this. You are looking for peoceedures and generators, when none are part of the rules.

I get why you're frustrated. You're used to games that would have that specific kind of support because they would need it. But that's not the case with FitD, as it supports itself by just figuring out as it goes. They are designed to be low-prep, because you should be creating on the fly.

But maybe I have something that might help. Some folks on r/bladesinthedark occasionally post score ideas, and some of the extra prepwork they put into these ideas. Here's one such score. No idea if it'll help, but I know they're handy for my own needs.

Otherwise, you should just watch a few podcasts of folks playing. Or find a pick up game to join and test the waters. I feel that you have a number of hangups regarding how you feel the game should work, but the only way to overcome it is by just playing.

Thank you for your supportive replies. I’ll be sure to ‘get chatty’ in the forums… Discord is a good tool, but I like the older of way of doing things a lot of times.

As for the format, I think semi-episodic might work well. Maybe something with the ability for players to leave and join between adventures? From what I’ve seen of the open games they basic function like their own sub-forums, so maybe a topic with each episode and downtime handled in OOC?

I’ll just need to learn my system(s) well enough to adapt to PbP. It’ll be an interesting challenge.

Honestly, a lot of my games have survived longer because of discord. It's nothing short of a godsend when it comes to making sure everyone is talking and active and whatnot.

And yes - each game has it's own sub-forum to do as they please, so you can have multiple topics set up, as well as blog posts and the like to help support. You can do a lot with the newest version of MW.

I've found that PbP isn't that much different from a live game, except where pacing is concerned. There's a few accomidations that are necessary, such as mapping out battles for some systems, and being smart about how to do certain rulings, but it's not too much of a challenge on that end. Honestly, the biggest challenge is in sticking with it, and remembering to post. But you'll likely figure it out.

    Good evening.

Pre-COVID I was a DM at a local game store for 5e. COVID happened, and life changed. These days I have a particular interest in both Traveller and the OSR, although I’m a bit more excited for trying to play Traveller. I’ve already drawn up a list of books for Mongoose 2e that I’m looking to buy as my financial situation allows.

I am, in part, a caregiver, and although I have less responsibilities now I still have an erratic schedule. Especially as I work towards entering graduate school to complete my education. My internet is also all over the place, and although I can almost always get connection I cannot guarantee the quality or the amount of bandwidth. Something text based where I can play in one game, GM in another, and post once a day in both is pretty much my ideal.

I also write as a hobby. Although I don’t expect to be published anytime soon, any chance to write for an audience is appreciated. Playing chess is also a hobby of mine, although I’m starting later in life and I’m not very good at it.

I look forward to playing with you.

Welcome to the Weave, Agriculture. You're not the only one who's free time was shaken up by COVID and the like (for me, it was kids LOL). PbP is a great way to scratch those itches, though.

Also, I recommend getting chatty through out the forums or even dropping by our Discord Channel, especially if you have questions. Just watch out for those welcoming harpoons - they're harmless... mostly 😂

Hi everyone! I'm Carcharodon or Rooney, whichever you prefer! My pronouns are he/him, and I'm a relative newcomer to the world of PbP though not to writing or RPGs. I've been a GM for the better part of the last decade for largely virtual games (D&D 3.5/5E and PF 2E), running through both Roll20 and Foundry VTT. PbP seems like a nice way to expand my horizons and keep up with this awesome hobby as my free time shrinks a bit with a kiddo on the way.

I'm looking forward to digging in around here and maybe even getting a game of my own going!

Welcome to the Weave, Rooney. And I feel you on the kid-induced reduction of free-time: I got two ragamuffins of my own, and I feel that the only time I get free time is when they're both out for the night.

    Hi there!

As the topic says, have been a member for quite some time, and I'm finally feeling ready to give PbP a serious try now that I have less time to play in person due to life.

Been using the site for character sheets for a very long time; I think about 8-9 years, I think? And used it I have for very many systems, DnD 4th and 5th, PF 1E and 2E, various PbtA games, and a long (but perhaps not as long as others here) etcetera. I have some PbP experience, but mostly for systems light on the RP side of things.

I've quite admired those beautiful posts people here to illustrate their characters upon applying to a game, and I have to say it is somewhat intimidating. If I may be so bold as to ask during my introduction, is there any guide on how to format your applications nicely for the GMs?

In any case, thanks for reading! Looking forward to playing.

Welcome to the Weave, Akaitora. Many of us were introduced to MW thru the character sheets, so you're not the first nor will be the last who opts to make the jump. And yeah - feel free to copy an existing template and modify. I personally use a very basic one that has served me quite well for years now. Otherwise, my biggest tip is "Keep it Simple and Stupid" - the more you fiddle with the nitty gritty details, the more fickle it gets.
