Varta racked her mind to see if she knew anything about those crazy goblins, though she wasn't entirely certain if she did, or would.

Thankful that the rune on her armor allowed the Goliath to see in the dark, she looked left and right at the top of the stairs, just in case something was out there, trying to kill them.  Varta knew that there was, but it was nice to sometimes have a preview of coming attractions before you experienced it all firsthand.

"What do you we think, folks?" asked the Goliath, pointing her axe left and right as she spoke.  "Certain death or  Definite Doom?"

Varta thanked all the gods of Stone that the Giants had seen it fit to bless her with a variety of mighty runes.  She felt as if she was losing her mind just as the Cloud Giant magic suddenly made its way from her breastplate to the enemy.  Thankfully this major reversal of fortune was enough to tip the scales in the party's favor.

The Goliath looked down at the tiny creature by her feet and shook her head.

"You're too dangerous to just leave here, punk.  Time to go back to nilbog heaven.  Tell them that a Htailog sent you there!"

Varta lowered her axes in a series of vicious swipes as she also bashed at the tiny thing with her shield.

    Divine SensesDivine Sense

The presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such forces. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type (celestial, fiend, or undead) of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity (the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, for instance). Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the Hallow spell.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier. When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.

    Lay on HandsLay on Hands

Your blessed touch can heal wounds. You have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you take a long rest. With that pool, you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your paladin level x 5.

As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool.

Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from your pool of healing to cure the target of one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it. You can cure multiple diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single use of Lay on Hands, expending hit points separately for each one.

This feature has no effect on undead and constructs.

    5386-200.png Character Overview

Faith was aptly named by her parents, for it did not take her long to find it and to swear fealty to those of Good and Bravery, although the Tiefling seems to care more about the subject and less about the particular god than one might think.  However, her parents were adoptive, not biological, as Faith never truly knew her birth mother and father.  Given that she ended up on the doorstep of a temple, it would imply that they were not evil, but highly irresponsible.  Or perhaps desperate, poor, and alone.  Or...

Night after night, the Tiefling tortured herself with wondering just who, or what, she was.  The strange brand that covered her left eye only left her wondering all the more.  Who did this to her?  Why?  What did it mean?  Not knowing if it was a symbol of shame or an emblem of pride, Faith mostly spent her childhood years with very long hair, doing her left best to cover it as much as possible.  Despite its obvious presence, it seemed to turn her left eye blue instead of golden, even though Faith could see well from both eyes.  Of course, during childhood, her peers were quick to make fun of both.

It seemed that perhaps her deity had compassion on Faith, for she grew into a gorgeous and shapely woman as her teens turned into her twenties.  Her lovely figure could not be entirely hidden under the heavy armor of a paladin, her hair grew silvery white, and her eyes took on an almost exotic appearance, which only added to her charm and allure.  Her former mockers now envied her, and plenty a young fellow sought her company at dinner.  Faith occasionally accepted dates, but she began to see that most were only after one thing and she soon gave up even trying.  Instead, she focused on her training, her god, and most importantly, her search for any trace of her real parents and their whereabouts.

This search took Faith to the high seas, where she joined a merchant crew, mostly to defend them from pirates, but truly to travel the world, from port to port, chasing information, hints, or any morsel of information that she could possibly find.  Along the way, the Tiefling crossed blades with many a buccaneer, and she learned to hone her fighting skills from her time at sea, enough to teach Faith less conventional methods of warfare.  While still an initiate, Faith still had not chosen an Oath and a path.  For the time being, she remains uncommitted, happier still to test the waters and find out the proper career path.  Still, Faith knew that as time went on, she would find her place in this world...if she could survive.

Having heard of a recent rumor regarding a Tiefling couple, Faith followed it to a local inn within the Borderlands, hoping to learn more...

    Description/Personality:

There is simply no way around it; Faith is exotically beautiful.  Able to hide behind an hourglass, as her fellow knight recruit Stephan once said, Faith's clear skin, silvery hair, unmatched eyes, and mysterious markings make her stand out and attract attention.  Faith herself still tends to cover her brand as much as possible underneath her longer hair, and her dress is more often modest than showy, leaving much to more imaginations than she cared to admit, but despite this, she tends to avoid suitors and remain focused on her tasks at hand.  Faith wears chainmail and a shield when she adventures, favoring protection for herself and her fellows, although her gait is that of a seasoned sailor with adept sea legs.

Faith is a wonderful example of 'firm but polite'.  She is a good negotiator, and she seems to be a good woman in general, with a desire to help those in need, to battle evil, and to right wrongs, but she also seems to try very hard to both fit in and be seen well, the price of growing up with horns and a tail.  Faith is well aware than her looks grant her favors that other Tieflings lack, and she seems to care quite a bit about the welfare of her race in general.  Faith, while strongly inclined toward good, is not a fool, and will not purposely handicap herself, but whenever possible, she prefers a moral solution.  She seems quite fond of music and possesses a pretty voice along with an encyclopedic knowledge of sea shanties.  Well, sea shanties that weren't terribly crass, anyway.

    spacer.pngBackground
    PHB: Sailor

    Personality Traits:
I feel that I must rise above what people say of me and become a great hero, making the world a better place alone the way.

    Ideal:
You must find something worth dying for to truly know how to live.

    Bond:
I still have ties with my former shipmates.  I miss them and will protect them if I know they are in trouble.

    Flaw:
I am very sensitive about what society thinks about Tieflings and I must prove we are otherwise.

  5. Varta Rockgrinder - Goliath Fighter (Rune Knight) 5spacer.png

Varta nodded as she moved forward, axe and shields in hand.  However, the Goliath was also quick to say, "I can't reach the Western one.  Yet.  But let's see if I can make life easier for us!"

Making her way over to the first goblin, only because her legs were able to take her there in the same turn, Varta lashed out with her battleaxe and then tried to bash the goblin with her shield, the goal being to knock it over.

You can parley this attention into access to people and places you might not otherwise have, for you and your traveling companions. Noble lords, scholars, and merchant princes, to name a few, might be interested in hearing about your distant homeland and people.

You use shields not just for protection but also for offense. You gain the following benefits while you are wielding a shield:

If you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to try to shove a creature within 5 feet of you with your shield.

If you aren't incapacitated, you can add your shield's AC bonus to any Dexterity saving throw you make against a spell or other harmful effect that targets only you.

If you are subjected to an effect that allows you to make a Dexterity saving throw to take only half damage, you can use your reaction to take no damage if you succeed on the saving throw, interposing your shield between yourself and the source of the effect.

    "HAH!  Shield spells.  This gal..."

Varta let out a loud, throaty laugh in her raspy alto voice and then helped all of the others make their way safely down.  She paused for a moment to 'admire' the wall of demons and all the various depictions and poses.

"Well, I say THIS for the demons.  They didn't make it to the top of the Abyss on their looks."  The Goliath seemed rather uncomfortable around the creatures, as if their snarling faces were an unwelcome reminder of something.

Varta then continued her way down the hall, shield up and eyes looking around for anything of importance.

"Come on down, friends.  If it held me, it sure as hells'll hold you.  And if any of you are shield enthusiasts, I think you're about to find heaven."

Varta was happy enough to wait for the others as they all came down the bucket, even volunteering to catch someone who fell.  Mostly, the Goliath told herself that she was going to have to keep a lot of softies safe so they could do their thing while she was busy smashing.  Fair enough; that was normally how she got hired for jobs like these.

While the Goliath waited, she decided to add to the graffiti, carving "Can't Find a Place to Sit Down" by Hugh Jass, all of it in Giant.

Varta Rockgrinder - Goliath Fighter (Rune Knight) 5spacer.png

Varta walked inside and took a seat with a group of seasoned adventurers.  Normally her job was to be the stone shield at the head of any group, and this place didn't look any different.

Well, actually it DID.  It had a talking turtle and a group of people who actually looked seasoned enough to stand tall against enemies from time to time.  Squishy as all hells, but hey, that was why she made the big bucks guarding them.  And while her height alone was usually enough to get her hired, Varta felt that her experience alone would be enough to get her by.

She sat down on what appeared to be a chair, although the Goliath had seen larger ones made for children.  She did her best to carefully lower her body down to the table, which looked more like a tea party for dolls than a fitting place to eat.  Varta opened her mouth to speak just as her chair completely shattered under the Goliath's weight.  Falling a glorious foot, the Goliath found herself on the floor, which was just low enough to fit her knees underneath the table.

"Gods, did they hire a gnome to build these accommodations?  I've seen bigger furnishings in a dollhouse.  Pieces of Schist, these things," Varta muttered in a raspy alto.  "Anyway, I'm Varta Rockgrinder.  If it's not immediately obvious, they hire me to bust heads like I bust chairs.  I'm pretty good at both, and looking at how squishy this table is, I think you can't afford NOT to hire me."

Cloud Rune Cloud Rune. This rune emulates the deceptive magic used by some cloud giants. While wearing or carrying an object inscribed with this rune, you have advantage on Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) checks and Charisma (Deception) checks.
In addition, when you or a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is hit by an attack roll, you can use your reaction to invoke the rune and choose a different creature within 30 feet of you, other than the attacker. The chosen creature becomes the target of the attack, using the same roll. This magic can transfer the attack's effects regardless of the attack's range. Once you invoke this rune, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
    nt...

    Stone Rune
Stone Rune. This rune's magic channels the judiciousness associated with stone giants. While wearing or carrying an object inscribed with this rune, you have advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks, and you have darkvision out to a range of 120 feet.
In addition, when a creature you can see ends its turn within 30 feet of you, you can use your reaction to invoke the rune and force the creature to make a Wisdom saving throw. Unless the save succeeds, the creature is charmed by you for 1 minute. While charmed in this way, the creature has a speed of 0 and is incapacitated, descending into a dreamy stupor. The creature repeats the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success. Once you invoke this rune, you can't do so again until you finish a short or long rest.

    5386-200.png Character Overview

Varta is a Goliath who ran away from her family after being shamed by a rival suitor and losing her fiancee to the same woman.  Rather than suffer a lifetime of verbal abuse from society, she ran from the mountains into human society to join the Luthger Bros. Circus.  Being a 'rare' race to most audiences, the dwarven brother duo who ran the circus were quick to sign Varta up, sometimes as a wrestler, sometimes as an assistant for magic and/or acrobatics, and others as a performer who did many feats of strength to the amazement of their audiences. Known as 'The Rockgrinder', she made a passable living for a few years while meeting a great variety of people, races, and performers.

Everything changed when one day, after a show in a dwarven city, Varta went out exploring and accidentally discovered an old cave that had been forgotten just outside the city.  Varta explored the insides and found a number of things written in Giant, a tongue she knew from her days growing up.  She was no scholar, but Varta found enough to learn that 1000 years ago, the dwarves of this ancient city used to study the tongues and writings of giants, and that some of those who mastered the complex runes learned great magical power from them.  There were even sketches of dwarves who were far too tall to be anything short of a Hill Giant, something that strained credulity.  Of course, the cave Varta was in DID have a very high ceiling...

In any case, she made rubbings and sketches of the various runes held within the cave.  After meeting Sulli Tamdrek, the smith who traveled along with the circus, Varta spent many evenings studying with him to learn the craft, and after a year, she dared to carve several runes upon her own armor and shield.   The power from the ancient Giant Magic was immediate and intense, enough to greatly increase her size, strength, and to give her abilities from the various Giants of both today and ages past.
