Born the third son of a minor noble family in Carcassonne, Louis de Lavande was raised much like any spare heir at the time; taught enough that he wouldn't embarrass the family should he become head of the family, but not enough that he might entertain thoughts of removing his sibling competition. Over the years he developed a love for the arts- anything from paintings and sculptures to poetry or music- and while he lacked the artistic spark to create his own pieces, he became somewhat decent at valuing what he saw, as well as the potential of the artist standing in front of him.
As his collection grew so too did the number of artists and musicians he sponsored who presented him their latest works for his support, selling the art once he ran out of room or low on funds, allowing the proceeds to continue the cycle. It was one night when a guest, the noble lady Charlotte d'Estrange, was visiting and noticed his great collection. Assuming that Louis was the man who had created this vast range of beautiful works, she hastened to embrace him into her clan, clan Toreador, before his gift was lost to the world, believing that his protests were simply of modesty and refusing to listen.
When the time came for him to present himself to the rest of his clan and prove his worth, Louis explained the misunderstanding as he had tried so many times beforehand. This was already an awkward situation between the two of them but with the presence of several influential clan elders, things did not go well. Charlotte continued to teach him and protect him, with the upmost reluctance, and on the soonest possible night she declared him free from her protection and to leave her sight immediately.
Louis wasn't truly alone as he had Remi, his childhood tutor from so many years ago, and Isabelle, a young widow who agreed to serve odd jobs as Louis's maid in exchange for shelter and protection, though he did spend several years moving from city to city as he headed east towards Budapest as he sought to see what new artists he might discover.
