  2. Wikus Plains - Region 39 Geography The southwestern corner of Chonkia is dominated by the Wikus Plains, getting cooler and wetter as the distance from the deserts of Davis Port increases. Most of the population is in cities along the coast, but smaller communities exist throughout the region. Aba, the capital city, is built around the ruins of a space elevator near the southwestern coast. Large wildlife is in abundance in the interior of the Wikus Plains, with towns often being menaced by magical beasts. Off the coast lie two large islands, Lesser and Greater Sybellia; these are covered in treacherous jungle with cities along the coasts. Much of the interior of these islands are unexplored, but the parts that are have contained ancient buildings stretching far below the surface. It is prohibited for people outside the Adventurers' Guild to venture into the ruins, but criminals have occasionally made dens in their upper layers. People Outside of the islands, the majority (around seventy percent) of the population is composed of the native wikusians, winged draconic humanoids capable of breathing fire. Wikusians tend to be shorter and thinner than humans, averaging around 1.4 meters, with dull grey scales covering their bodies. The rest of the population is twenty percent human and ten percent other races. The coastal cities trend more diverse, with the interior being almost entirely wikusians. Island settlements are primarily human. The beasts in the area occasionally attack towns for unknown reasons; dealing with these threats is in the purview of adventurers. The Adventurers' Guild, based in Aba but with branches in other major cities, trains teams of adventurers to fight these threats, explore ruins, respond to emergencies, and generally deal with unexpected disasters. Religion The majority religion in the region is known as The Great Nail. Originally brought to the region by human settlers in the islands, it posits that metal is a divine gift, and that it should be used only in things intended to endure, not wasted on temporary things like metal cans. The Great Nail doesn't tend to congregate, but its followers put up metal statues and artistic pieces that one can say a prayer to. The Great Nail has been rising in prominence recently, especially along the coasts, as the fire-based tenets and rites of the native Magmatic Soul have proven difficult to reconcile with species other than wikusians. Resources Resource: Heroic Adventurers (Soldiers/Laborers). Desired Import: Weapons, Armor, and Munitions. The Adventurers' Guild sponsors parties of skilled heroes going to foreign lands, collecting a portion of the rewards earned. It's common for these teams to take on side quests while out, doing assorted labor and filling temporary positions. The merchants in the area are always looking for more and better gear to outfit adventurers with, and such goods are in high demand.

The Wicklunds are gaining public traction with the local news with their outreach. Attempts to repair the broken connection between the regions failed, but provided insight into the system that may aid a second attempt. Outside of those negotiations, the trade network continues to grow, this time with a focus on technological goods. Non-Actions: 1: Support CBC's buyout of trading post 2 in region 39. 2: The People Want Action: A letter from Wallace Wicklund to the Pan-Tekhum Worker's and Trader's Union: It delights me to hear the plans for some action, and I understand the desire for input, but I am worried the Union lacks strong conviction; the proposed course at the moment has very few details. In any case, any peaceful reform has to have the support of the local merchants. Once that is acquired, you should attempt to buy out the remaining traders, so that the WTU has full control over the practice. Finally, once that control is established, you can shift the practice to something more ethical for the workers. News and Rumors: Wallace Wicklund has funded a documentary on the inner workings of the Component Research Facility. Reviews are largely negative, calling the film propaganda and saying it primarily serves as an advertisement to work for the Facility. In response, the film was pulled from television rotation, but unofficial copies of it remain. News and Rumors: Tourism is booming both to and from the southern plains after officially integrating them into the Wicklund dynasty. Meanwhile, Wallace is getting criticized for seemingly abandoning the people of Firmament after making contact. Wallace Wicklund stated Davis Port couldn't afford to get involved in a war. The floating ring Firmament has a section that appears to have a similar climate to Davis Port; if it is inhabited and contact could be made with the people there, it could provide a good place to expand. A mission was sent to investigate the region. Non-Actions: 1: Allow WTU to do an inspection. 2: Mytho-Historical Data Gathering Mytho-Historical Data Gathering While the Davis Salvage Operation only started activity in the region around 600 years ago, much of the history of the era has been lost to poor record-keeping in the early days, documents lost in Davis's collapse, and the Wicklunds' tendency to gloss over Davis's failures. As a result, folk tales about the Davis era abound. These tales range from the implausible (long-lived treasurer Rigby Delson was most likely not a dragon in disguise) to the potentially accurate. One such story relates to Alexis Cavendish, the second leader of the operation, who ran Davis from around 560 to 550 years ago. It is known from surviving financial logs that she had a particularly short tenure running Davis, and that the company lost a significant amount of money at the end of it due to one particularly disastrous salvage. It can be inferred that a significant amount of equipment was lost in exchange for little profit. As the story goes, Alexis had made a deal with an unknown party (usually changed in retellings to a military power nearby) to have some high-grade tungsten alloy out by the end of the year. This kind of deal was common, and usually came after some of the right kind of salvage was already scouted. Alexis, however, was greedy and decided she'd probably find some by the end of the year. Naturally, for the next eight months, no tungsten was scouted, and Alexis, panicked, put more and more of the budget into scouting for it. Conditions for the workers grew harsher and harsher. As the deadline approached and no material was provided, war was threatened. As the deadline grew near, Alexis' employees finally rebelled. After an assassination attempt, Alexis fled for her life, leaving the workers with an impending war. Supposedly, they dismantled their own machines to pay the other party, marking it in the logs as a "salvage operation". News and Rumors: Refugees from all over Sansar are welcomed to Davis Port as war displaces more people and the Component Research Facility looks to hire. Food supplies are currently keeping up, but some are nervous about relying on offworld imports. The Wicklund Salvagers Capital region: 40 Geography The region is a vast desert bordered by ocean. Most of the area is uninhabited, but there is one major city, Davis Port, on the western ocean. There are also various temporary salvage operations going on at any given time, usually making camps under rocky ridges. The mountains to the northeast are unexplored, due to being far from the Port and requiring vastly different equipment to survey than the rest of the desert. The desert itself is mostly sandy with the occasional rocky outcrop and bush. No large animals are known to inhabit the region, but small lizards and birds are common sights. A discovery of a large ruined city was made around 10 years ago near the mountain foothills, known officially as Salvage Site 5317 and colloquially as Domeland. History and Government This region was settled relatively recently, as the desert proved difficult to settle in after the War of Eternal Bombardments. Eventually, the high quantity of salvageable materials left in the desert drew in the Davis Salvage Operation, who built shelters from the salvage they couldn't find a way to sell. Although the Davis Salvage Operation is now defunct, the name was carried to the town it eventually grew into: Davis Port, still the only major settlement in the region. At first, the region was run by the Davis Salvage Operation, however, they found themselves unable to handle the pressures of governing a city and incoming competitors and broke down. In the panic left in their wake, power was seized by the Wicklund family of mages. It is currently run as a monarchy, with Erika Wicklund as the queen. People The people of the region are extremely varied physically, coming from all over in search of profit or escape. Culturally, the lack of most raw resources has led to repairing and tinkering being highly valued. The primary magic learned by those in the region is temperature-based. A basic application would be to keep a room or camp at a comfortable temperature in the thermally fluctuating desert, and more advanced applications can be used to reshape metal, melt sand, and fracture various materials. Salvage operations are done with small crews of around ten: two to three surveyors, two to three mages, and four to six machine operators. The vast majority of the population are permanent residents of Davis Port. Faith No one faith can be said to have a major backing in the region: in the Davis era, settlers brought diverse faiths to the region, and the Wicklund family has not yet chosen to support any of them. Churches of different denominations are not uncommon in Davis Port. A focal point for religious activity is the Platinum Square Temple, which does not have a fixed faith, but allows religions too small to have a permanent building to rent it out and congregate. Resources Their primary exports are Salvaged Components (Conductors and Circuitry, Construction Materials). The local mountains and desert provide mineral resources, but it's hard to grow crops due to the harsh conditions. Desired Import: Fruits and Vegetables Technology As the cost to reclaim salvage has been growing over the years due to nearby salvage dwindling, they have been looking for ways to keep up trade; the latest push is to completely repair salvaged vehicles and spacecraft to sell at a much higher price. While they have not yet mastered this, they have learned some of the principles governing their construction. Starting techs: Pseudogravity Engineering, Wet Navy Ships
  8. The Wicklund Salvagers Dip 5 | Mil 1 | Eco 5 | Fai 1 | Int 2 Round 2 Actions: 1: [Dip] Sway Faction (Government) in region 39, using 1 treasure (2d6 + 6 [5 (stat) + 1 (treasure)] vs TN 12): Success The government of the southern plains has had multiple reasons to support the Wicklund Salvagers, such as their proximity and familial relations to Davis Port and the Wicklunds, but was slow to publicly acknowledge it. Pushing them on the matter led to more official ties. 2: [Dip] Raise Organization Reputation with EMP, using 1 treasure (2d6 + 6 [5 (stat) + 1 (treasure)] vs TN 12): Failure Unlike the court of a few years back, the current Imperial liaisons seem indifferent to attempts to sway them. If they even noticed is up for debate. 3: [Dip 5] Establish Cultural Identity (bonus to Sway Faction rolls) and earn 1 renown (The name of the CI can be Making Connections for the tracker, but I'm out of time to write flavor right now, sorry.) 4: [Eco] Buyout Trading Post 3 in region 52, using 1 treasure (2d6 + 8 [5 (stat) + 1 (treasure) + 1 (WTU arcology) + 2 (support) - 1 (distance penalty)] vs TN 12): Success Due to the relative scarcity of quality fruits and vegetables on Sansar (and the current isolation of Eskor), trade had to be taken off-planet, to Veehra. Luckily, the distance did nothing to hinder the deal, and a supplier of maize was secured. 5: [Eco 5] Construct Arcology in region 40 (bonus to Investigation), receive 1 treasure from WTU, and earn 1 renown A few miles down the coast from Davis Port, the newly constructed Component Research Facility documents the design and functionality of the most intact salvage before sending it off to be sold. While this had been done for certain classes of component in the past, the new facility aims to construct a comprehensive database of what's been found in the region. This data is hoped to be useful in constructing theories about the origins of phenomena caused by other technology, but can more practically be used to find the capabilities of and easily price components from the desert. Non-Actions: 1: Abdicate rulership to Wallace Wicklund 2: Support RRE buyout of trading post 3 in region 40 News and Rumors: As commerce to the south increases, having only boat and space transit is becoming inefficient. For that reason, a rail network is planned to extend to the south, although it is still in early planning.
