Abraxas's origin is unclear; after all, he wasn't around to see it, since his conception was before his time. He has some details, from his grandmother, but they are contradictory and probably not all true.

His mother died in childbirth, in the forest, cared for by his midwife grandmother. That is probably true. His grandmother claims she became pregnant without the assistance of a father, however, as a gift of the Nine, which is almost certainly not true. In the village near his grandmother's hut, rumors were that his mother ran away with a strange man, an outsider, who led a small coven or cult of women and moved from place to place, performing dark rituals and demanding payment to remove curses, was gone for four years, then appeared, heavily pregnant, gave birth to a monster, and ran away again. That sounds sketchy, too, since he has seen her grave.

Still other stories involve strange lights in the sky, and falling stars, and men from the moon that spoke in whistles that crash landed with him. Villagers talk.

In any case, he lived with his grandmother, or the woman he believed to be his grandmother, Goody Chames, midwife, herbalist, and local druid. He learned druidcraft from her, but he was always alone, an outsider in his home. So, he left.

Being distinctive was a bit of a burden for him, but being able to take on animal forms alleviated that. And when his handler, one of many empire spy masters, found out about his ability, he was recruited. Given a cover as a messenger and bard, to spread propaganda far and wide, while sneaking in to eavesdrop or occasionally steal documents and plans from unsuspecting noblemen while in animal form. It was a living.

Until he got caught. His handler wouldn't bail him out of trouble when he was discovered with documents and artifacts that did not belong to him, and he ended up being stripped of his belongings, sold into servitude on some underdark barge. Eh, it's all part of the spy game. Eventually, he will be free, will probably check back in with his handler, and will get back to work. For now, he is just laying low.
