Dread Chambers of the Undercity

As soon as the creature was no longer a threat the group moved to secure the items on the workbench.

The cluttered surface of the desk holds a set of alchemist’s supplies, a jar of alchemist’s fire, two vials of acid, and a potion of healing. A leather-bound grimoire hidden beneath some blank parchment. Skirtal is also able to collect all the ingredients on his list from the contents of the table.

There is also a note folded and tucked away within the grimoire's yellowed pages.

"Good hunting." The shadow fey declares when the ooze stops moving.

He lets the others collect whatever they want.  He focuses on inventorying Skirtal's list letting Brik carry as much as he can.  "Looks like we've got all the exotic ingredients on Skirtal's list.  Anything you don't want to keep, I'd like to sell to replace my longbow which was stolen.  Alaric's longbow is good, but you probably want it back, right?"

Ayssa kicked aside frozen chunks of ooze. She moved over to the desk, and picked up the leather bound book. Inspecting it with her arcane senses, the leather bore residual magiks.

Intriguing.

"This grimoire appears to be a magic tome. We should study it further."

Ayssa glanced over some of the pages as she moved along the table. Alchemical tools seemed very useful for this group. Ayssa noticed the acid flasks with caution.

Then she found the fire flask, and felt drawn to it. Held captive within the admixture, the reagents suspended and isolated, poised to fuse into flaming fury.

She reached out her gloved hand to pick up the fire flask. Drawn to the little bomb.

"Do not like that..." Maksym said, the yellowed note seeming to elicit a strange rumble in his chest where his heart no longer beat. Something about the wording struck a bit to close to that still organ. He backed away and turned to their client as if to distract himself from it, and ignoring the various loot in the process, "Any want us to do with the body?"

Ilyasa scrunched up her nose as she considered the corpse. Blood-dry at best. "I personally have no objection to you eating it, but this probably should be reported to the proper authorities. If only so we do not get into problems of our own later." Robbing the dead man probably counted on that list, but that was much easier to hide than eating the corpse.

Dread Chambers of the Undercity The Desperate Kobold

Gathering up what they wanted the group made their way slowly back out of the cartways and eventually back up to Zobeck proper. Skirtal was overjoyed to see that Brik had made it back with everything on his list. He was a little distraught at his new contact meeting an untimely end, which meant Skirtal would have to find a new supplier for the exotic ingredients he needed.

Once again, the group was treated to a feast at the Rampant Roach and the group was becoming a regular sight at the kobold eatery. As the evening waned the sound of an angry mob could be heard outside on the street. Peeking out of the windows one could easily see that the angry mob was led by Rozalyn's father and her husband, come to seek justice against Brik for the abduction. The two men were accompanied by six would-be vigilantes, each man armed with a sling.

The Mob Rules

Suddenly, the sound of shattered glass cascades through the Rampant Roach, and a dusty beam of light pierces the dim room from a large hole in the front window. The fist‑sized rock that was hurled in from the street outside splashes into a raven pie on a table by the window. The woeful din of the small mob echoes from outside and a dry, old voice shout: “Come out, you scaly mutt! We know you’re in there!”

Brik’s companions Skik and Skak immediately move to aid in his defense, while a cautious Skirtal urges everyone to fall back toward the kitchen area.

Ayssa set aside her plate, a third helping of the delicious (if questionable) food that Skirtal had prepared.  This place really was a hidden gem. However, tasty though the food and drink might be, an angry mob does tend to draw one's attention.

Business before pleasure it seems.

"Duty Calls.  Angry mob at the door?  Good thing we stuck around to enjoy the fine fair."

Ayssa muttered a prayer, subtle flames flickering on her breath before drifting to the heavens, a fine ash dust drifting to the ground. An orange glow began to rise in her hand, one which you could sense held a peacefulness within, like watching the dancing light of slow glowing embers.  You somehow know that Ayssa holds a divine spark, and if it touches you, you will be warded from all but the most intense hostility.

"I could go out and try to speak with them.  I trust that the Omnessiah would protect me. However, I suspect that my own words would not be diplomatic enough.  Better should one of you desire to negotiate. The Omnessiah's Light will shroud you as well. Bear in mind however, that it is only a modest prayer.  We do not have physical divine intervention.  Should their hatred escalate, they may attack through the ward.  Should the negotiations drag out, the ward will fail.  You will have at best, 1 minute of protection. However, combined with a show of good faith?  Walking out unarmed to speak with them? It might be enough to lend strength to your words."

If not, well, the Omnessiah provides many solutions to the problem at hand.  I wonder, if Skirtal has a recipe for charred mob?  Perhaps a braised brisket?

And Ayssa was prepared to take the risk herself, should none other volunteer. That however, was more likely to escalate into a flaming battle.

Alaric Castleton - Human Paladin (MW Character Sheet)spacer.png

AC: 18 | HP: 12/12 | Initiative5: +2 | PP: 14 | Divine Sense: 4/4 | Lay on Hands: 5/5 | DM Inspiration: 1/1

Before the group left the eerie alchemists workshop behind, Alaric quickly rummaged through the belongings he had left on his workbench guarded by the ooze. Most of it wasn't of much value or interest to Alaric, but he pocketed the healing potion, just in case they'd run into any more trouble on their way out of the Cartways. By the time they finally arrived back at the Rampant Roach for dinner, the paladin was spent. These last days had been tiring for him, and all he wanted to do was just enjoy his meal and get some good rest.

What he did not want to do was calming down an angry mob, and Alaric was not amused when he heard the glass shatter. Part of him wanted to just confront the mob, see what would happen. Chernobog would like that he thought, fully aware that riling up the mob was unlikely to end well for them. Alaric let out a long sigh before slowly pushing himself out of his chair and brushing away the crumbs on his clothes. "Looks like we'll get to appease a mob for dessert, how lovely." The paladin said wryly. "I suggest that either me or Ilyasa do the talking, a human face is probably the most likely to put this crowd at ease."

Lorin ensures that they leave nothing of value at the dead alchemist's lab filling his rucksack with alchemical gear and vials of liquids.  He was not materialistic having lived a life of leisure, but he had to replace his stolen longbow.

At the Rampant Roach, he tucks into the celebratory meal enjoying the cuisine.  It was nothing like home, either kobold or human.

When the rock breaks the window, he takes a final bite and stands up adjusting his sheathed blades.  "Aye, you humans should speak to this mob.  I can give you the blessing of my Mistress."  The shadow fey offers while grabbing Alaric's longbow.  "I'm right behind you if it turns violent."

Dread Chambers of the Undercity The Desperate Kobold

As the group inside prepared a response, a second rock came through the window and bounced off the far wall as Skirtal, Brik, and his two protectors made it into the kitchen and away from the front room.

Repeated calls from the outside aimed to get those inside to surrender Brik to them.

Ayssa listened carefully, eager herself to respond to the continued threats. She supported a peaceful resolution, at least in theory. However, it was not in her to be abused, without response. Not for long. No, the priestess patience would quickly wear thin, should the mob continue threatening and attacking.

Patience, Ayssa. Patience.

"I agree. One of you has a gentler tone than my own. I doubt fire will cool their tempers. These drunken fools may not need much provocation to escalate. We are certainly justified to defend this home and this family against unlawful assault. However, those people out there will be hurt.... I would not regret giving them a chance to back down and go home in reasonable health."

Ayssa may not have much sympathy for drunken fools, but even she agreed that these fools might not deserve death for this offense.

Ayssa prepared to do two things to support the party. As discussed, she was ready to protect the negotiator with Omnessiahs Sanctuary.

Alternatively, she was prepared herself to escort Brik out the rear exit, if the mob escalated. She could Shield his extraction if necessary.

Alaric gave the Shadow Fey a curt but grateful nod for his blessing, then turned to Ayssa. "Aye, best to have a chat with them first. While me and Ilyasa do that, could someone else check if there's a rear exit? See if one of the Kobolds might be able to sneak out, call for the guard." With that said, Alaric headed towards the entrance of the Rampant Roach, ready to confront the crowd.

The paladin resolutely pushed open the door, crossed his arms and cast a hard glance towards the mob before he spoke. "Good evening lads, I'll keep this short and simple. Brik isn't interested meeting with you, and we are not going to hand him. Also, I'm pretty sure that breaking those windows constitutes vandalism. You can stick around and explain that to the guard, or just bugger off. Your choice." Alaric explained. His exhaustion was clear from his voice, but it had a sharp edge as well. He didn't want to cause trouble, but he'd be standing his ground.
