[Story] Battle on the East coast

Location: Rumson, just south of New York forward operating base

Time and date: 16:00 EST, 21:00 GMT, 23rd September 2023

Luna Mason

It has been almost two weeks since Artie moved from NERV-London to NERV-Denver, during that time you have been introduced to a number of people, especially the two pilots you will be joining in future conflicts.

Luna is thirteen years old and has a faint Canadian accent, she has been one of the most welcoming and kind people you have met thus far and is normally a calming voice when you are in the facility. She speaks as if she is a lot older, though you have a feeling life has forced her to grow up quickly.

Felix is fourteen years old, making Artie the oldest of the three. He is born and raised in America but says his parents came up from Mexico before he was born, he is a nice enough person, and thinks of himself as a bit of a model. He is however smart, you can’t deny that, his room is filled with a mixture of gadgets he is making. You're almost sure he is nicking stuff from the engineering labs when no one is looking.

You have faced a good few Entities back in NERV-London, however your two teammates are fresh, this is their first fight.

The three of you have known that Jehoel is approaching Denver for a while, though the information on the Entity has been minimal, next to zero. You know its SR is around 100, but until the Tarvgarian gets a good scan when the creature is on land you won’t know anything else other than it is roughly worm like shape and about twice as large as your Class-C mechas.

For now, the three of you sit in your Mecha, positioned within Rumson, an abandoned area that was gifted some basic support structures for your Mecha, such as power supplies and support caches with ammo. You know the Entity would come through here first, and then go to Denver, NERV always puts some form of AT bait to draw them along this path for interception.

For the most part it is quiet on the radio, apart from Luna speaking lightly to Felix.

Combat 

Round 1

 

On the radio the bridge team give you a notification of the incoming foe, each of you do the final checks on your weapons and wait. Soon enough the Jehoel emerges, ripping up through route 36 on Sea Bright. As it comes into sight the sheer force of its AT field can be felt, tingles run down your spine. The creature is easily twice as large you and wider, it is certainly worm shape and the most distinguishing feature is a large gapping maw. From a glance it doesn't appear heavily armored, but that could be misleading.

The AT field is strong, but not overwhelming, but it is vicious and wild unlike previous Entities whose AT fields simply felt pressuring and foreboding.

Felix is the first to crumble, the monster is closest to him. Felix immediately tries to make distance between the pair of them as you and Luna open fire.  

 

Round 2

 

Luna keeps her weapon trained on Jehoel and continues to release a barrage of fury, though doesn’t move from her position. You take a few controlled steps forward and maintain your neutralize as you release a second round of shots.

Felix attempts to flee once more, leading the creature away from you. Though this beast moves fast as it burrows and squirms across the ground, eventually getting close enough to bite down on Felix’s left leg. There is a howl of pain from the pilot as you watch the armor-plating get crushed under the force of the enemy.

 

"Be warned, the bite appears to be injecting some form of venom."
 

The words belong to Sarah, your dedicated bridge personnel. Her voice comes through the intercom to your entry plug.

 

Round 3

With Felix at high risk you hear Luna call out and quickly charges forwards, as she gets close to the enemy she drops her gun on the floor and draws out her knife from her shoulder and quickly engages the enemy in melee. She attacks like an animal, completely different from the calm girl you have known before.

 

With her in melee, you shots against your foe will be harder. But if she doesn’t draw the enemy's attention, you will likely lose one pilot very quickly. At the moment, Jehoel seems focused on Felix as it once again strikes at the leg. You watch as both metal and flesh are torn forth from the mecha.

We will be starting in round 4, you post first and then I will follow etc.

 

As discussed we will be jumping into the fight a few rounds in to get the ball rolling, there will be a mini summary of actions below.

Round summaries

1)      You three engage in neutralizing the enemy and spread your fields, and the foe emerges from the open and moves towards Felix.

2)      You all deal some damage to enemy and maintain neutralize when possible, enemy charges Felix and deals damage with a critical. Artie snaps out of fear.

3)      Luna charges towards the enemy and engages, Felix takes heavy damage to the legs, making him immobile.

I will also be testing out a possible house rule for the main game here, which is change the squares from 5dam to 3dam in total, to ease in movement. Ideally, this will only really change the distance moved when a person full moves/run I believe. Current house rule is round up the squares, if you can move 5 dam then you get to move two squares on this map.

Through scanning and analysis the Tarvgarian is able to provide you with information on what AT powers your opponent has.

- Accelerated territory - reduces its Deflection but moves faster

- Layered field - reduces its defelction, but improves its armour

- Kinetic wave - Sends out an AOE attack, damaging peopel and causing collateral damage.

- Absolute terror - A spread that causes ego barrier damage and physical damage to all people near. Instantly defeats anyone without a field spread.

Felix's critical damage gives him 1 point of fatigue, meaning -10 on all skills. If he takes 2 more points of fatigue he faints.

Show fear

-          Felix Failed: The character is gripped by their primal instinct, and whether they choose to rationalize it or not attempt to flee from the scene by whatever means they have available for 1d5 rounds, unless they snap out of it before the duration is over. Gain 1d5+1 Insanity, the helplessness and horror theyfelt today may become a reoccurring nightmare for the character.

 

-          Luna Failed: The character begins to lose control over their own body as their mind withdraws and the most primitive parts of their brain seem to scream. They may only take Half Actions for 1d10 rounds or until they snap out of it. The character gains 1d5+3 Insanity

 

-          Artie Failed: The character can barely abide the thought of close contact with the atrocity that triggered this shock, its surface almost seems to writhe and squirm before them. They will avoid entering melee combat range with the trigger if at all possible. The character’s WS is halved and they gain an Insanity point every time they are hit by a melee attack, until they snap out of it. They also gain 2 Insanity points immediately (please add to your sheet)

 

 

Operations director, for the sake of ease I will not be playing them as a full character but will provide buffs and information as required.

Arti’s fingers trembled ever so slightly as he stared at the Angelic being through his monitors, it had shook him ever so slightly but the pilot knew that he didn’t have to get close to it; at least not for now. He could feel the grip on the “bond” between him and the Evangelion falter for a few moments, but a quick couple of breaths and it soon faded away. “We can do this..” He whispered barely audibly. 

 

The Evangelion known as Cardinal, followed his thoughts as he brought his “oh so reliable” Pallet rifle up into the aiming position, it had been custom made for long range support and therefore should help with his current predicament of not wanting to be anywhere near the venomous bastard before him. 


It was a subconscious thought, altering the flow of the AT Field, diverting some to hopefully make the Angels defenses not as formidable while ensuring his own were at least backed up somewhat.

What came next was all down to the vigorous training drills thrown at him since becoming a pilot. The Trigger was squeezed, at worst it’d be covering fire, at best it’d do some damage at least…

Round 3 Summary

Arite aims his weapon and fires, lettings off a single well placed shot from his pallet rifle. The bullet zips past Luna’s right shoulder and slams into the AT-field of Jehoel, after a moment of resistance it breaks through and slams into the back of the Entity’s head.

 

There is a small jolt of movement from the creature as it turns its' attention away from Felix and glances towards Artie. Your HUD quickly flashes up that the weapon had minimal affect, the armor of the creature absorbed most of the damage.

 

Sarah’s voice can be heard within the entry-plug, “Jehoel’s armour appears strong, scanning for weaknesses.” With that you watch the scanner on your HUD activate, after about ten seconds it flags up a number of possible weak points within the armour.

 

 

Round 4 

With wounded prey in font of it, Jehoel wastes no time in striking out at Felix. It pulls its body back, revealing a large red core on its underbelly, opens its serrated maw and strikes forward attempting to devour the Mecha.

 

Thankfully, or perhaps luckily, Felix is able to roll out of the way at the last second, the sound of curses come across your radio. As Jehoel pulls its' head back Felix takes that opportunity to retreat, getting to a somewhat save distance he increases his neutralization on the enemy and prepares his weapon. "I will try and keep back and assist as I can, I will let you two have some fun." He has once again returns to his 'cool guy' attitude, seemingly gotten himself under control.

 

When Felix empowers his neutralize you watch as Jehoel's AT field collapses, he is vulnerable.

 

You hear a howl, like a wolf, coming from Luna. "Let's show this thing it ain't welcome Artieeee!" Your name is dragged out long and loud as you watch Luna's mecha jump a little from side to side before lashing out with her dagger. This is not a small tickle or slice, she pulls her arm as far back as possible...Almost stabbing herself in the back of her head, before tearing the blade through the air at the Entity's head.

 

Her resonating blade tears into the temple of Jehoel with ease as there is no AT field present, the attack rips armour plating from flesh. As she pulls the weapon back she lets out a low whistle, clearly impressed with herself as dark blood gushes out from the open wound.

Artie quickly scanned the battlefield, feeling something was amiss. A prickling sensation at the base of his neck was enough of a tingle for his focus to be directed to the numerous scanners and pings going off across his HUD. "What is it.." The young man whispered to himself.

Wincing ever so slightly at Luna's antics, Artie quickly regained his composure from the momentary paranoia of all the sensory pings to quickly take aim, and this time squeezed the trigger, forgoing some of the trigger discipline in favor of maximizing the damage potential from this opening.

Round 4 Summary

 

The conflict is now fully underway, with the three pilots holding Jehoel at bay.

As Jehoel recoils from Luna's devastating blow Artie is able to release a barrage of bullets against the enemy, almost all bullets pepper Jehoel's worm like body with only a few bullets disappearing into the ocean.

There are some clear signs of damage on the body, though the pallet rifle is clearly struggling against the hardened scales of Jehoel.

 

 

Round 5 

With Felix moving away Jehoel turns its' attention to Luna and Artie, it rears its body up and opens its maw as if screaming into the sky. A moment later your sensors begin to flag up an intense build up of AT, it is clear something is coming your way.

Perhaps two seconds later Jehoel whips its head down towards Artie and Luna and launches out a cone of force manifested by AT. This wave of kinetic force tears up the earth and abandoned buildings as it screams towards you. Luna, even though so close, sees the attack coming and is able to shift her body to the side and out of the way, but makes sure to stay close to her foe. However, her Umbilical cord is not so lucky, and is quickly torn apart from the attack, leaving her on battery power.

"I'm running on battery guys, I can hold him back for a bit before I move back to Felix's umbilical port!"

Afterwards you watch as its' scales begin to shimmer and gleam as if covered in oil, "it appears Jehoel is fortifying his armour with his AT, his deflection has likely dropped. You can converse some of your AT team. Recalculating weak points." Those words are enough for both Luna and Felix to recall a small portion of their AT, fortifying their own defenses.

Keeping close to her foe Luna lunges out with her knife, able to dig the blade deep in-between the scales, her blade clearly strong enough to overcome the enemy's armour. She pulls it to the side attempting to tear open a large wound, but Jehoel pulls back before the injury becomes too serious.

Behind Jehoel you watch as Felix raises his MAS rifle and fires off a short burst of attacks against the Entity, though none find their mark.

Collateral Damage total: 3

Full auto normally gives you 1 extra hit per 2 DoS (in your post you say 1 hit per DoS), I know there are traits to change this but can't see them on your sheet so will treat it as 2 DoS per hit. If I have missed something let me know and I can retro and extra damage roll.

Full auto burst lands 2 extra hits out of a possible 3, meaning 1 misses. Normally generating collateral. Rolled a 5 and 1 for the extra damage.

Hit location of 44 is body, all 3 hits are on body. Damage output = 5, 6 and 2.

 

Show actions

  • Jehoel uses an AT power (half action), 11 points of Rending damage (pen 0, breach 2). Dodge can be done as a reaction, but if you use it you can't aim etc this round. Aoe is shown on map.
    • Dodging AoEs - When you dodge an AoE, you need to be able to move out of the 'danger zone' with the distance equal to your half move. As part of the dodge action, your character actually moves, so update the map.
    • Your Umbilical cord will also be destroyed, regardless of passing dodge or not.
  • Jehoel changes their AT spread as a half action. Sarah passed awareness roll, info in post.
  • Luna attempts dodge and passes.
  • Luna attacks again, rolls 48. Target 62, so 1 DoS. Damage rolled is a natural ten, so righteous fury, reroll attack at got 68 which is a fail...So normal attack. Damage is 5+4+3 = 12
  • Felix does a semi-auto burst on Jehoel, rolls 52, target 14, misses. Bullet hell for collateral.

Artie could only watch as Jehoel began to build up energy, it’s sudden whipping of its head segment barely gave the pilot enough time to mobilize any form of resistance against the attack. Every muscle jerked the control, every thought was dedicated to some form of movement, be it a focused roll or an instinctual scramble, anything to get away from that blast that was coming towards him.

Alas it wasn’t enough and Artie only had moments to brace for the impact, energy attempted to slice through his armour, and when that failed it was only stopped by the Evangelions inhuman proportions, the energy only getting through the first few layers of its biological make up. As the dust settled from the umbilical cord flailing around behind him, it being messily severed from the AT attack which had failed to damage it targets, Cardinal stared at Jehoel, as if the pilot within was contemplating its next course of action.

“I’m going to fall back to the Umbillical port to the south, replug back in, provide covering fire and close the gap till I am in melee range, will then proceed to flank the target.” It was almost a robotic reciting of common battle tactics, but Artie knew what he was doing, playing to his strengths, and hey if keeping the targets spread out helped keep the team from being torn apart together then so be it.

With all that said and done, Cardinal began to move back, keeping the angel within sight as it made its way back to the port.

Round 5 Summary

 

Though Jehoel's AT attack was vast it left little damage on the units, only severing their connection to power. However now the team was split, with Luna the only one close enough to provide protection for the wounded Felix.

Artie is quick to retreat, his battery slowly depleting. With the new distance between him and Jehoel he is no longer able to maintain the Neutralization of the foe's AT field, though it appears Luna and Felix are enough to keep their foe fully Neutralized.

 

 

Round 6 

The HUDs pick up the shift in Jehoel's AT field, once more you watch his scales coalesce with a shimmer of colour.

The beast then dives towards Luna, its' maw wide and ragged teeth sinking into the left leg of the Eva. A howl of pain can be heard from the young girl as Jehoel tears flesh and metal from the hip and upper left leg. For a moment she wobbles on the spot as you watch Mecha fluids spill across the battlefield.

Luna, however, doesn't miss a beat, and sensing an incoming strike Sarah is quick to shift her assistant to Luna. Allowing the young warrior to see the weak spots within her foe's armor.

Amid agonizing scream, Luna raises up her knife and attempts to plunge it deep into the head of her foe. His attack on her was brutal, but it left him open, making it easy for her to sink her blade in. "Nice try!" She shouts as she drags her blade across the upper portion of Jehoel's head, severing a portion of its' armour plating away, exposing a fleshy under section.

With Luna holding back the Entity Felix moves up towards her, one hand helping heft his wounded leg. As he gets close to his team mate he pulls out his power cord and presses it into the back of Luna's unit, quickly refreshing her battery.

"You got this, show him who's boss."
 

The words of encouragement from Felix can be heard across the radio, and you watch Luna nod on the video screen through teary eyes before calling out to her other team-mate. "I need you to take his attention Artie, I can't take another hit like that!"

“It’ll take time to plug myself in, after that I’ll advance as fast I can to engage. You’ll have to hold out just a little longer. If offense isn’t an option, a solid defense might do you both better for now.” Artie wasn’t being sassy, his options were quite limited at the moment, and unfortunately his comrades would just have to simply deal with the hand of cards life had just dealt them.

The Evangelion reached down and pulled a port free from the umbilical station, the cable spooling out loudly as it shifted into the plug point at the back of the colossal being. The beeping stopped, and Artie sighed, he didn’t need to inform his team, they’re own monitors more than likely informing them of the change in circumstance.

“Advancing now.”

Cardinal began to stride back into the combat zone…

Round 6 Summary

 

Both Artie and Luna are able to get themselves plugged in, removing the fear of them running out of power.

However now both Luna and Felix have sustained serious injuries to their legs, hampering them in the conflict.

Now plugged in Artie moves towards his team, closing the distance between him and his foe.

 

 

Round 7 

You hear Luna laugh a little as you comment on them needing to hold out a little longer, "will see what we can do, but this, ARGH." Her words words are interrupted at Jehoel once again lurches forward with all its' might. It's body moves quick, the worm like body able to shoot forward with little wind up time.

You watch as Luna's AT field is shattered once more and Jehoel's mouth clamps down onto Luna's shoulder and lower neck, you watch her raise up her blade, obviously intending to sink it into the monster's exposed head while it is attached. However, she never gets the chance to strike as Jehoel grinds down with all its force into her shoulder and neck and proceeds to tear the mecha's head from its' shoulders.

You watch the head of the unit fly towards the river, slamming into the ground and rolling down an abandoned road before coming to a stop. Its' agape mid yell.

Luna's mech falls silent and dormant, any communication channels with her quickly shut down and you heard the control bridge quickly go manic. You hear one person call out, "track the entry plug when it ejects." A number of seconds pass, and there is no ejection. The mecha simply stands there motionless, its stabilizers able to hold it like a statue for the time being.

Luna is stuck within her mecha, likely within total darkness with no way of knowing what is about to happen. Her life support system may have very well have failed, just like her entry plug ejection.

With Luna no longer neutralizing Jehoel you HUD pings up a weak AT field around the creature, making it clear that its defenses are returning. The creature pulls his head back, weighing up the stationary snack before it.

Jehoel has used his Fate point

 

"No!"

There is a loud yell from Felix as he watches the head get ripped off, you can see his hand is up and reaching out to Luna as if he was about to pull her back, but was just too slow.

When it is clear how bad the situation is Felix wastes no time in pulling back towards his umbilical port, one hand hefting his wounded leg as he drags his rifle with one hand. As he moves he shifts his AT field to flood Jehoel, neutralizing the beast entirely.

"Like hell is this how it ends!"

He raises his rifle at the creature and Sarah directs information to his HUD, with that he fires. Shooting and fighting aren't his strong suit, but it seems there are few choices available. As he fires off his shots he speaks a few quick words to Artie, "Can you get her rifle, your pea shooter won't do anything now."

The shooting goes wide, but does seem to pull the attention of Jehoel to Felix, as opposed to the immobile Luna.

    • I don't believe she rolls for Berserk unless she takes damage to herself (as in the pilot) or the mecha when it has no power. Correct me if you see rules stating otherwise, you know berserking better I think.
    • Artie and Felix would normally test angelic fear due to fellow pilot's defeat, however because both failed fear tests already this fight they cannot trigger it again (from my reading of the rules)

It was true, every second counted and unfortunately the clock had counted down for Luna's Evangelion, he watched as Cardinal stooped low to begin a full on sprint, his optics picking up both the sight of Luna's discarded rifle and what remained of her Evangelions head, grimacing slightly he also noted that there wasn't a plug ejection, she was still trapped inside there. "Shit.." Artie muttered to himself, being such a large entity, the journey didn't take that long for the young man to reposition just before the rifle...

Round 7 Summary

 

Luna is the first pilot to crumble, her Mecha now non-responsive. Under normal circumstances her entry plug would have ejected her to safety, however there appears to have been a malfunction leaving the young girl vulnerable.

For now, it appears Felix is attempting to draw Jehoel's attention, though it is unclear if it will keep the creature entertained as Artie closes into the target. The ex-London pilot gets in close range, coming to a stop within the river, water now splashing up around the upper shins of Cardinal.

Over the intercom you can various people calling to one another on the bridge as they try to resolve the situation. If the team cannot hold Jehoel here, then an N2 mine quickly becomes a viable option to the bridge.

 

 

Round 8 

The open wound upon Jehoel’s head continues to weep, unnatural fluid continues to leak and fall to the ground, seeping into the earth.

 

With two foe’s remaining it appears Jehoel spends a moment deliberating between its targets, shortly after you watch its body shudder slightly as the scales of its body are pushed open ever so slightly by hundred of spine like darts. With a shake of its body you watch a dark cloud of these darts shoot out in all directions, an attack that is far from precise but is able to reach all three of you.

The spines themselves prove to do little as they are deflected by a mixture of armor, AT field and generally just miss.

 

As the spines fall to the ground Jehoel continues its’ onslaught and charges towards Artie, its worm like body carving up the ground as it lurches forwards with a bite to clamp down on Cardinal’s leg.

 

As this attack occurs Felix plugs himself in, all power returning to his battery. He then proceeds to raise his weapon and open fire, a scream of anger and determination coming from the boy as the bullets tear through the air, mostly missing the target.

 

However, Felix’s neutralize is enough to keep Jehoel without any AT field, and Felix’s own AT field seems so strong that you see it physically limiting Jehoel. Making it that much harder for the Entity to attack Artie.

 

I can fully neutralize him at the moment! He has shifted his AT into his scales, keeping his field weaker.” There is a grunt of pain as you watch Felix heft his wounded leg a little, “I can get closer to improve my hit chance, but I am useless in melee.

 

That is basically him saying, ‘your turn.’

Artie barely had enough time to react as the Angelic abomination lunged forward towards him, Cardinal failing in its pilots attempts to defend against the attack. An unbearable pain coursed through the pilots body as chunks of mass was torn from the evangelions limb, numerous buffers kicking in but the sensation was enough to stun the Evangelion in its tracks.

“As if it would be that easy…” Artie whispered to himself, glaring up at the monitors observing the absolute sh*t show going on before him, a resolve burned away within the young mans body as dived forward and scooped up Luna's discarded MAS Rifle, before bringing it up to take aim upon the Angel before him.

Round 8 Summary

 

At close range Artie is able to get ahold of Luna's rifle and fire off a single shot towards the Entity, the intense beam of energy is able to blast through the foe's AT field and strike Jehoel on the body. Though the blast itself seems to struggle to pass through the monster's increased physical defenses.

 

 

Round 9 

Jehoel wastes no time in lashing out against Artie mere moments after he fired his weapon, once again the worm like creature lurches forward with an open maw. Its' upper body surges upwards towards the head of Cardinal, the intent of ripping the head from the shoulders is clear.

As the monstrosity makes its attack Felix maintains his harmful neutralise on the target, hoping to help Artie avoid the attack. There is a moment of hesitation as you watch Felix move in closer before raising his MAS rifle and firing.

"Bloody hell."

There are some other words, you assume swear words in a foreign language. As you watch him grab his wounded.

"I can get in closeer if needed, I can look to take a hit while you open up it's skull. Hide behind me if needed."

With that you watch your comrade fire off a few quick shots against Jehoel, hoping to land some damage.

The shot strikes with undeniable accuracy, breaking through the enemy's AT field and striking Jehoel in the temple. There is a moment as the head glow red, and is quickly followed by a bloody explosion coating the nearby area in the bloody matter of Jehoel.

The worm like creature writhes in pain, and even without a head is still alive. Though heavily weakened, your monitors quickly pick up the weakening of its AT field, and a reduction in its physical armour.

"Well, maybe not its skull...We can get the core."

Those words are clearly in relation to his previous message.

Artie could only watch as Jehoel sprung forward, its gaping maw set to engulf the head of Cardinal, the numerous sensors glitching as both audio and visual feeds began to distort from the force of the blow coming his way, but somehow at the last minute, Artie managed to force Cardinal to dodge to the side, narrowly avoiding what he presumed to be quite the distasteful fate.

“.....F*ck” Artie whispered to himself, a couple beads of sweat dripping down his brow, but this was not the time to be counting one's blessings. Repositioning himself a little further away, the pilot noticed Felix’s shot had come in moments after snapping teeth had missed him, blowing apart the Angels head, if only that was enough to stop the damn thing.

Gritting his teeth, Artie took aim and fired… this thing, this whole situation was rather uncharacteristically beginning to piss him off. “Do us a favour, and just die already!” The young man was practically spitting venom at this point, something his comrades had not seen from Artie in their time knowing him.
