Round 9 Summary

There is a shift in the flow of combat, for once it looks like the team of Mecha have begun to get a foothold. Even with just two of them, they are able to destroy the head of Jehoel, leaving nothing but a leaking stump where its head should be.

The fight is not won yet, and Artie moves away and continues to open fire on to Entity, the MAS rifle striking the hardened scales of the monster. Thankfully, clear signs of damage are left on the body of Jehoel, the scales slowly weakening.

Jehoel does not take the attack lying down however, you watch as the glistening AT field on the beast's scales vanish and instead a dark circle emanates out from him. The circle of darkness, quickly flagged as an Anti-AT field, spreads out quickly from Jehoel, within a matter of seconds it has a radius of 20 dam.

Each of the three mecha feels their footing go slightly as the layer of earth beneath them seems to give way and gravity itself begins to shift, for now however it is still easy to move...For now. Though it is not the distortion of the earth beneath your feet that is most worrying, it is the tingling in the back of your neck, the sudden numbness in your fingers and slight blurriness of your vision that causes your heart to start beating faster. You don't know what is happening, but it isn't good.

Round 10

Jehoel does not pursue the feeling Cardinal, or lunge towards Felix. With its Anti-AT field now dispersed it is clear that the creature is happy to remain at some distance.

However, that does not mean it doesn't attack, you once more watch the spines and needles push through the armour plating. There is a small delay as you watch all of Jehoel's body tense before there is a violent wriggle which crushes many of the abandoned buildings nearby, along with firing off a cloud of spikes in all directions.

The spikes, thankfully, miss Luna ...but strike Felix. Though the heavily armoured body of his Mecha shrugs off the spines as it they were nothing but toothpicks. However, the Anti-AT field does not lay dormant.

You watch as Luna's left leg is ripped off from her hip, you don't see exactly what caused it, and can only assume some influx of gravity due to AT manipulation. The large open wound lets all sorts of biological and mechanical fluids run out, you have no communication with Luna but hope that her feedback buffers are working or that the connection has been completely cut.

As the leg is pulled into the depths of the Anti-AT field, and lost from sight, you watch as sparks of energy come off of Luna's Mecha. A faint dark glow begins to emanate from her body, it is faint and difficult to see.

Your HUD quickly registers Luna's mech as activating, though no active feed between yourselves and Luna is established.

The now headless and one legged Mecha quickly awakens, you watch as its muscles between to swell and feel a spike of AT power as the berserking creature lurches forward on one leg toward Jehoel. It closes the distance, but with one leg is unable to keep its balance and crumbles to the floor, though it doesn't stop and quickly pushes itself up towards Jehoel. Clearly intending to rip the creature apart.

Once again, you hope Luna is okay within her entry plug.

Felix watches as Luna's mech returns to the world of the living, "Luna! Don't be stupid!" He shouts the words across the mic, but there is no reply. Various commands are coming from the bridge, but it is very clear no one was expecting Luna to get back up.

Felix says something in a language you don't know and then raises his weapon, taking a moment to steady his aim before firing a shot past Luna into the body of Jehoel. It tears through the AT field of the monster and quickly ignites Jehoel in a torrent of flames. Within a matter of seconds the fire has engulfed the entire body of Jehoel, the creature thrashes around wildly as dark plumes of smoke come from its body.

Within about ten seconds there is little flesh left of the body, and little to no bones, though there is still a bright red core. The heart of the beast. That alone is enough for Jehoel to maintain the Anti-AT field that is currently touching each of the pilots.

"Finish the core."

The words of Sarah come through the intercom, finally the end is in sight.

Through scanning and analysis the Tarvgarian is able to provide you with information on what AT powers your opponent has.

- Accelerated territory - reduces its Deflection but moves faster

- Layered field - reduces its deflection, but improves its armor

- Kinetic wave - Sends out an AOE attack, damaging peopel and causing collateral damage.

- Absolute terror - A spread that causes ego barrier damage and physical damage to all people near. Instantly defeats anyone without a field spread.

Wounds: 12/12
Fatigue: 0

Ego Barrier: 18/25
Insanity: 10

It was now or never it seemed, with Luna’s Evangelion going absolutely batshit, Felix hanging in there by a thread of tendon and this Angel being in such a ruined state, Artie decided that simply squeezing the trigger until the capacitors on the MAS Rifle kicked in was simply the best course of action for now.

It was around three or so blasts before the popups began flashing up on the screen, and despite the system not allowing it, Artie continued to squeeze the trigger despite it not registering due to the aforementioned safety precautions. Oh the destruction that could’ve been, if it weren’t for someone in Health & Safety hadn’t designed such limitations.

“Rap, Tap, Tap” Artie whispered, beads of sweat dripping down his forehead as heat billowed from the barrel of the MAS Rifle, was it enough? The next moments seemed like an eternity as Artie watched, hoped and whispered a little prayer. It had to be enough, right?

Round 10 Summary

Artie releases a barrage of shots against the Core, with no body protecting the glass like sphere it is a relatively easy target for a trained pilot to hit. Numerous shots strike the core, cracks quickly begins to spread throughout the sphere.

This is the first time MASER has seen active use on the battlefield, and it seems that the investment has paid off.

As the core begins to crack your HUD begins to ping, and Sarah's voice can be heard, "Stop the attack!" But it is already too late, numerous bolts of energy are heading towards Jehoel.

One strong hit might have been enough, but today NERV learn that the Core of an Entity can be overloaded, given too much energy. That energy is enough to allow it to go critical, enough to kick off a chain reaction.

Even before Artie can lower his gun after firing the Core ignites itself and detonates.

The blast itself is the signature cross, the force is enough rip up earth almost a tens of meters deep, and certainly enough to put the pilot's lives at risk within a damaged mecha.

No hardened armour or strengthened AT field is enough to resist Jehoel's final attack.

You lose sight of Felix and Luna as the bright blast of white encompasses your vision.

Resolution of last round

  • [Jehoel Death] With so much critical damage of the energy type the core turns into a bomb.
    • This is an AoE, people can do a dodge roll if they can get outside of the blast within a half move. Though I dont think any can.
    • Damage is 12, bypasses armour and deflection, it is reduced by TB if you have it. Hit location is body.
    • Resolve your damage, how wounded is your eva? Does entry plug ejection initiate?

  • [Felix's Damage]
    • Felix takes damage to the body, but no critical damage is dealt.

  • [Luna's Damage]
    • Luna takes damage to the body, but no critical damage is dealt.

Artie

Wounds: 12/12

Ego Barrier: 18/25

A bright light engulfed the Camera feeds as the ground around Cardinal shook and erupted, sensors began overloading and glitching out as the influx of data pushed systems to their breaking limits. Warnings pinged out with corrupted audio as the wave of energy crashed against the Evangelion, with Artie bracing for the impact. Camera feeds cut off, team feeds severed and all Artie could do was close his eyes and wait as the cascade stripped whatever it could.

The silence was deafening, thankfully not due to any damage to Artie's ears, the sensors cutting off probably save his eardrums some damage. He had no idea if Luna or Felix were alright, and all he could do was tap his index finger against the controls, which barely responded before a single ping popped up on screen.

"Umbilical Cord detached, entering Back-Up Power mode, countdown initialized."

Least somethings worked, for now it seemed.

And so the waiting began, Artie sighed as he floated in the LCL..

Combat Summary

When your sensors begin to return you can see both Felix and Luna's mecha mostly in one piece. Like you, the blast dealt damage to the main body of the Mecha but it was clear none of you sustained any critical damage from the explosion.

The latent AT power within the air makes communication difficult, but you eventually hear Sarah come through the comms. "Extract Luna, confirm her status. Our support teams are 30 seconds out." Felix replies making it clear he can check, and hobbles towards the battered, one legged Mecha that Luna resides in. Thankfully it deactivated within (or due) to the explosion.

Felix is as delicate as possible, pulling parts of the Mecha away to allow easy access before slowly extracting Luna's entry plug and placing it on the ground. There is a moment of tense waiting, neither of your Mecha are delicate enough to pry open the entry plug without risky Luna.

Thankfully you don't need too as you watch the door to the plug burst off, the LCL content spilling out across the ground as you watch a young Luna poke her head out. She glances up at your mecha, she is so small down there, so vulnerable.

You watch as various support vehicles arrive, mostly helicopters, and people begin to disembark and tend to Luna. You and Felix move to the closest umbilical cords, you will need to wait for extraction, and that could take a while.

Congratulation kids, you didn't die.

Post battle report

Collateral Damage total: 20

Due to this fight being done at a Forward Operating Base, it was classed as being similar to zone 4 of London, so all collateral damage was reduced. In a 'normal' battle, collateral would be 30, which is still a good battle.

Combat is classed as 'successful battle' by page 174 in pdf, this would resort in NERV (as a whole) gaining 15 surplus and 10 + 1d5 research (I rolled, total 12). For game purposes a portion of this is fed to NERV-London, think trickle down economics...

NERV-London gain 8 surplus and 6 research.

Luna, Artie and Felix each gain 150 xp.

This Story thread has finished.
