Session 1 | Chapter 1 - Puppet's Warehouse

Just off the North Airport Boulevard highway, nestled among storage unit complexes and a small sea of other warehouses rests the former shipping warehouse at 16651 E 2nd Ave. Once home to a Aurora based courier company, its owners disappeared during the 2nd Crash, leaving the building held by an uncaring holding company. Its existence discovered by a curious fixer, the building and its front office had been rented and repurposed for a supposed commercial venture; a gun and armor repair and modification business run by a dutiful and loyal Renraku Citizen. Permits had been granted and countless shipments of tools and goods had been delivered to the address- so when the young woman herself had arrived just short of a month ago she was nearly ready to move in.

The holding company had made quick work of liquidating the leftover crates and items inside, selling off the industrial shelving to leave the interior utterly bare save for the grey polished epoxy concrete flooring and the mass-produced furniture within the front offices. So when Puppet moved in- she had nearly the full 29,000 square feet of room to work with. Security was modest- a high chainlink fence surrounding the property with two powered gates, both exiting onto the main street. Flood lights illuminated the stretched parking lot and the yard-area behind the warehouse itself. A total of 5 bay doors allowed easy entry for vehicles of nearly any size from practically every side of the building; atop which was a network of security cameras and alarms mounted that kept a watchful eye on the building's surroundings. From the outside it might appear a modest fortress of commercial planning- but within was an odd story to be certain.

spacer.png

Within the building's primary bay door was an immediate collection of automotive tools and equipment, numerous lifts, hoists, workbenches, tools and supplies to repair, maintain and even extensively modify a vehicle. It was easy to see that Puppet's bike spent it's idle hours sitting atop a motorcycle lift waiting to be used and maintenance overseen by a number of automated diagnostic equipment hanging and sliding about the area that Puppet had clearly designated as a 'garage' of sorts even as countless thousands of square feet sat around it begging to be used. All through the building a similar 'compartmentalized' or 'station' method of organization seemed to be in place.

Across from the 'garage' and a bit deeper into the warehouse was a section dedicated solely to the supposed business Puppet had started- armoury-work. An entire shop's worth of tools, parts and numerous tables sat sprawled out, punctuated by stools and rolling chests containing any number of things meticulously sorted- as seemed the way that Puppet liked to keep her life. Organized, with everything in its place. Holographic projectors and numerous AR tags stood ready to assist with viewing plans, examining parts or modifications, or even running tutorials to assist Puppet in her armourer-efforts. A pair of household drones slowly moved about the area keeping everything tidy, returning tools to their precisely planned places and ensuring that at any moment Puppet could sit down and spend some time working without delay.

Most oddly perhaps was the 'station' that sat near the warehouse's center. Lifted off the epoxy-flooring by black 4 inch thick risers was.... a home. A home without most of its walls save for an area that no doubt contained a bedroom and bath- it had all the comforts of a upper-middle class Japanese home. Decent but mass-produced furniture, couches, electronics and entertainment devices. A well appointed kitchen complete with dinner table and small kitchen-island to work on. It looked every bit akin to a media or Hollywood 'set' on which filming could be done for a sitcom or drama- as if Puppet had simply purchased a decommissioned sound stage worth of filming sets and assembled the home from its contents. Pipes descended from the ceiling along a support pillar to provide water, other plumbing and electrical services to the 'home'- perhaps a home most odd, but also a home that in many ways was incredibly 'Puppet'.

To the one side of the 'home' stretched an extensive gym set up, complete with over a dozen machines and workout stations that promised a full training regime to any who would take advantage of them. Numerous holo-projectors littered the area offering holographic coaches and trainers to assist in every exercise or offer encouragement as the needs arise. The facility looked well used, at least for only being occupied for several weeks, a testament to Puppet's desire to keep in shape- likely for the dedicated purpose of maintaining her readiness for a job.

Finally, at the opposite side, was an in-floor pool and a accompanying above-ground hot tub. Maintained by a handful of household drones, Puppet clearly had a eye to the finer points of relaxation. Though covered in the moment, the swim and spa facilities were heated and awaited everything from a casual pre-bed soak to a full holographic-trainer equipped physical workout swimming short laps across the pool. Of perhaps all the 'stations' within the warehouse it was quite obvious by the fresh hanging towels and a bit of a 'path' already walked between the area and the home, that Puppet made frequent use of them.

It was here that Puppet.... or perhaps Ryoko, made her home. Beneath the nearly 25ft ceiling and within the confines of a gentle echo she found peace. She had returned from the group meeting with Pickle just over an hour ago. She had followed her same routine as she had for the past few weeks. Walking herself mentally through each step of entering and securing her property. The entrance gate. The bay doors. Parking her bike in the 'garage'. Removing her runner-gear and setting her firearms down next to her armor within her 'armory'. Everything in its place- though her sword has its own place. Her mind, screaming that it could not be separated from it for long, demanded to be kept at her side from the moment she awoke, to the moment she lay to sleep. As such a small shrine rested inside her bedroom where it could rest upon a stand immediately next to her. Though in the worst event, should intruders break in and avoid all security, with her firearms across the warehouse and all else lost- she would still have her tormenting blade.

But with her bike parked, her firearms and armor removed to be cleaned before the job, sword held tightly in her off-hand, Puppet walked into her holo-projector equipped home in little but the white lace of her underthings to grab a bottle of water from the fridge and lean heavily on her kitchen island with a deep sigh. She had countless thoughts running through her mind, conflicting opinions and outlooks that wrestled for dominance. She had a new team- one she hoped she wouldn't be responsible for the deaths of like her last one. Her fellow Angels. With every breath the memories of that rainy night infiltration threatened to consume her- perhaps she would need to watch the recordings again. To reassure her that what happened wasn't her fault- that it was an outside force that took control of her. The murderous fury had seemed so real, had felt like her own thoughts- but it had all been an illusion. She needed to remind herself of it- less her self-hate consume her.

But for the moment, she cracked open the bottle of water and drank deeply of it before taking a slow and deep breath to steady herself. So much to think on, but perhaps turning her brain off and handing control to a personasoft to pass the time- she didn't know. Perhaps in the next breath- she would decide.... or simply procrastinate for yet another beyond....

Goodness, this is quite a place for the price. I'm not going to be a dick about it but you are definitely pushing beyond the commercial description, It's a middle-ish home within a warehouse, I'd say two shop/facilities one for vehicles (the large garage you have now doesn't meet the description, this is much more inline with ship/facility) and another for armorer, all the projectors, the elite-level gym, and basic housekeeping drones. The one Yard equals 200 sq meters, or 1800 sq ft. At a very rough estimate you likely have 20'000 sq ft of empty space with the stuff you have in there now, so that's like 10+ yards Yeah you added in most the stuff to the lifestyle, it just feels a few steps up in terms of flash and comfort than I expected. I really appreciate the effort and descriptive text and RP and I have no intention of asking you to change anything or increase the monthly. Game mechanics-wise, it doesn't really affect anything. I have to find other way to motivate Puppet to work aside from improving her living situation as she has little to improve on where she is.

A polite "chirp" sound emanates from Puppet's comlink, The custom sound she set for only real friend Fix. Fix gives her a moment before using his access privilege to finish the com connection and project itself through the holoprojector with the closest proximity to Puppet. Fix's Avatar projects to life, it appear to look itself over and adjust the fit of it's suit. It accesses the warehouse cameras, the drones' sensors, and their logs. Fix takes a quick accounting of the warehouse's status and approximates Puppet's current state of mind based on how messy she has been. "Konnichiwa Ryoko-san, you look well this evening." it vocalizes through the holoprojector's speaker. "How did the meet with the "Johnson" go?"

Oh don't misconstrue anything, Puppet does wish for better living conditions! She has, at best, a medium lifestyle. And while she is paying a LOT for what she has, it's the "Extra Space" that is, obviously, a 'thing' here. Unfortunately- there isn't any real way to replicate the size/scope of a warehouse with 5e's rules. In 4e there was, as they broke up lifestyles into numerous categories with one involving just how much space you had. However- at this point the space doesn't really do anything. And if she wants to put in more 'things', she will need to start paying for those obviously.

As for the tools and things- looking at the definitions of things I am seeing a biiit of a discrepancy in my mental images and what the book says. When they say a "Tool Kit", I imagine a handheld case of tools. Which appears to be their intention. Now when I imagine a 'Shop' of tools, I imagine a single-vehicle automotive shop. A lift to elevate a vehicle, various tools, rollers, pumps and 'things' to do repairs and services of a vehicle. Then when I imagine a 'Facility' of tools I imagine a whole- well, 'facility' of machines, with the ability to fabricate parts and create custom 'things' as the determining factors separating a shop from a facility. The game's definition of 'Shop' just appears to be.... as best as I can see, "A bigger collection of handheld tools." since, obviously, you aren't fitting a traditional vehicle lift or whatever inside a van, and said lift or many of the things that make an automotive shop aren't at all portable.

So in essence- the mistake is mine, as there seems to be a massive gap between where the game's "Shop" tools end and "Facility" tools begin, and I had clearly written Puppet's 'garage' as being in the middle of those two. Obviously, mechanically, it's firmly a Shop Tools thing. And until, or even if, she ever branches out with bigger vehicles or even drones, that's really where it'll stay. But at least I guess she'll have room for the full Facility if she ever decides to spent an intense amount of money on things she'll rarely use! Lol

Now, as for motivating Puppet- just keep in mind. She has SO many motivating factors already. Having her be at least moderately content with her living situation (though again, she very much still wishes to better herself in that regard; she's effectively just living in a Shadowrunner Team Warehouse without the Team- something that might tie into her whole backstory, trauma etc) I would hope wouldn't be too bad. She's already got the hurdle of the many hundreds of thousands of nuyen necessary just to remove her yakuza hardware, boost her initiative dice to not be a slow-liability, get a car so she's not driving around in the cold winters on 2 wheels, and so much more even before we get to just- getting her life in order. Puppet's the kind of character I'd actually put through some therapy in-game just because she has so many issues. Well, therapy if the team doesn't work with her to overcome herself in a way. Lol :)

But, thank you. But you should always know, I'm perfectly open to reducing things, the descriptions, whatever is needed. Never feel like you need to hold back in that regard. I'm happy to work with you to make things better. And better can include Better For You and the game. :)

i5sIzrE.png

Puppet's lips parted into a gentle smile at the sound in her ears. She had given Fix complete access to her headware, let alone the digital 'key' to her new home, so he could easily come and go as he wanted- she wanted him to know that with her, he would always have that Freedom. He had been to the warehouse any number of times, before and after her arrival in the property- so while the surroundings were not 'new', the late night house-call was certainly a new experience. Still in the kitchen, Fix blinked into existence beside Puppet- no, Ryoko. With them, there was no need for call signs and job-slang. Fix was the only friend she had- and she, his 'First Ever Friend'.

"Fix!" Ryoko said with joy in her voice and her heart, instinctively her arms parted and she gently hugged the air around the hologram, as if she was giving the man a welcoming embrace before giving him a knowing smile. It was, perhaps to an outside viewer, a sad and hollow gesture- after all what good is a human's hug to a digital entity projecting a hologram. But to Ryoko it was a showing of care, of love, for someone who had been there for her, and she for him. She knew she was hugging nothing but a projection of light, and so did the AI- but the gesture, the 'show' of it, made the meaningful difference.

Ryoko made a quick motion of supposedly composing herself, her actions more befitting an excited young teenage girl than the grown professional woman she supposedly was. She gave a sharp wink, clearly having no concern for her friend seeing her in practically-nothing. After all, he'd been the AI inhabiting the 'Crash Pad' home of herself and her old team. Over half a year living in that house- there wasn't any way he hadn't seen her looking far worse. To the AI's perception she looked tired, her headware's simsense recordings of the evening able to show him the events that had transpired that evening at the speed of thought if he cared to look- though Ryoko was quick enough to speak.

"Shockingly- mundane? When you said this was the City of Shadows, I had thought things would be a bit.... weirder?" she gave a quick giggle, turning to lean against the kitchen island and, perhaps in the most telling gesture- she set down her sword on the counter; her body finally, for just a moment, visibly relaxing.

"Asooo- it was- somewhat like The Show and yet- not. Mrs. Johnson looks like she is from- Evo Corporation. Or maybe NeoNET. But the mission is so mundane that it is weird that a corporation is involved. But the man who is coming with us is very kind- forgive me-" Ryoko catches herself, quickly giving Fix a summary of the job, the whens, whys and hows as far as she knew them.

"-so, it seems everything will work out. Maybe a fight with a gang. Though I am- concerned. About the other people on the team. I am already seeing signs of trouble. There is a human there, so much like Thor- he does not like me much. I must improve my english." she says with a deep and sorrowful sigh.

Thor, the troll 'heavy weapons guy' from the Fallen Angels show, had been her mutual 'front line' person alongside her, but for the longest time they had never seen eye to eye. They had come to an understanding in the first few episodes, they had respected each other- but it wasn't until much later in the show when Thor's true backstory of being a desperate family man, with his home lost, his children and wife living in abject poverty, and his appearance on the show and supposedly being a big-bad troll-ganger being entirely an act- did Ryoko finally understand and accept the man as a friend. He had wielded a big axe and toted around heavy weapons with the grace of a lumbering titan- but in the end he had been a good man with an ironclad moral compass.... and the thought that Puppet had killed the father of several children, damning his family to destitution or worse, had always weighed heavily on her. She had never learned the truth, however of what became of them.

"Most unusual" Fix considers. "It is certainly not the best neighborhood, but a group of talent like that for an eviction? It seems excessive. I am sure I do not have to warn you to be prepared for the plot twist." Fix does an odd walk about the kitchen island like he is pondering the situation. Which isn't too far off he is running several simulations, searches, and computations on why this property is so important to Uncle Pickle, and more so why he has the goodwill of Megacorp. "Why does this man have the support of the Corp? I understand his reasoning, humans are very much unreasonable when sentiment is involved. Yet, the Corp, Evo is it? Even with their reputation of philanthropy and the like, Such actions do not compute. There must be a missing variable."

Puppet's cadence in the conversation picked up immediately, never missing the metaphorical 'beat' of it. "My thoughts as well. To have the support of one of The Ten- especially Financial Support.... there must be Profit for them. Profit to move even Them." she spoke alongside Fix, equally in musing as she remained stationary but was just as visibly processing and thinking on the subject. She had taken no offense or even objected to Fix's observation of metahumans and their emotions- she knew it was true all too well.

"What about...." she thought aloud, the words forming almost along with the very line of thought that inspired them. One could almost call it 'lag' in a way.

"...Underground." she said after the briefest pause. With the word her expression lightened and her ponderous gaze lifted to look to Fix's circling holographic form. Her expression suggested a bullet-train of thought rapidly forming in her mind.

"The Warzone is a place without law or infrastructure. The gangs there wouldn't tolerate the Corporations presence. They would-" and with the words half-spoken Ryoko paused ever so briefly again, as if a second puzzle piece was mentally settling into place. "-they would unite against any corporate effort to seize land. Or dig below ground. Or even to retrieve resources." she continued, her thoughts coming quicker, her expression growing more sharp and 'awake' with each passing sentence.

"To do that- they would need a cover to secure the site. Like Pickle-san. And they would need to create chaos within the gangs; a way to ensure a distraction for them. Just like the Demons gang is doing." she looked to Fix with the smiling expression of a flatvid detective putting together the pieces of a mystery- but she had no means to verify any of her thoughts as anything more than a fanciful story.

"What resource could that be?" Fix ask. "I suspect if a strip mine started to be dug in the warzone the gangs would not stand aside. I do not have sufficient data to hazard a guess. Your theory about the demons should be easy to prove. If they are working a big distraction for Evo then they should not interfere with Uncle Pickles's operation. From the sounds of them, for your well-being I do hope you are correct. "

Puppet nods slowly, her mind still picking at errant details in her memories and thoughts. "Not an overwhelming attack. No- but a minor one. To keep appearances. But-" she lets out a soft sigh as she seemed to relax a bit in her excited posture.

"-these Akuma, Demons, are puzzling. For as much as stories are written with villains who wish only chaos, this isn't a story. This is real. These 'Demons' must have objectives. Goals. No one, or thing, exists only for chaos. So chaos must serve their interests in some way." she mused aloud, but in the end can only shrug.

"But- I do not think anyone knows what motivates these Demons. But- them working for Evo or whoever is behind this would make for an entertaining Plot Twist, yes?" she asked with a hint of a wicked smile, calling back to Fix's own words earlier.

"As for what resource- I am not familiar with what exists below ground in that location. There is a Post Office there that seems of interest. An old bank. Perhaps the bank? A vault beneath it?" she asks, not entirely to Fix but almost as if to the universe itself. To punctuate her words she reflexively extends her left hand and summons the holo-image of 'Pickle's Dream' and the places around it- an image that Fix had no doubt already grabbed from her headware.

"But this would be a lot of effort to secure an old bank. I do not believe old banks would be worth anything?" she asked as well, shaking her head slowly.

"The only other thing is the name that 404, the team's decker, discovered. He believes it to be the Evo woman's name. Kira Kerensky. Alias Kerishia Ankandy. I do not possess the ability to discover much more. But I would not wish to ask you to do anything that would draw attention to yourself. I do not know what good knowing about her, or this resource will be. I know a 'Good Shadowrunner' keeps their mouth shut, and eyes forward- but Pickle-san is so genuine in his want to help others. And-" Puppet takes in a deep breath, the subject she brushes against even lightly being one that both she and Fix knew all too well.

"If he is selling his soul to a company.... then I would wish to see him cautioned all the same." she gives a nod of acknowledgement to their mutual pasts, both still bound to their corporations to a number of extents. Fix knew better than any that despite Ryoko's outward appearances as the unfeeling corporate-princess, she had spent her time on Fallen Angels secretly acting to help others while maintaining her facade.

A number of times she had used her headware to secretly backup data that Johnsons had asked destroyed, sending some of her mission rewards to individuals the team may have effected with collateral damage during a mission.... or in one particularly powerful episode, Puppet had discovered that their mission's target was one Sarah Waterfield- a new mother who they discovered had a child that was a SURGEd changeling, just like the group's adept Bastet. The feline-changeling had been nearly violently objectionable to the idea of completing the mission, failing to do so coming with great cost. It was Puppet who, aboard the gala-party's yacht, confronted the woman as she fled and seemingly impaled her upon her blade before leaning forward to tear off her life vest, ripping her blade away and kicking her into the water. Her act had been so flamboyant that even for a time it had fooled Horizon's own editors- and the group was awarded the mission's prize.

For her supposed deed Bastet hated Puppet, and the animosity the changeling held for her was passionate and dark- only months later did Horizon reveal in the lead up to the finale that Puppet had not in fact killed Mrs. Waterfield, but had slipped the blade through her dress but not her body. That as she leaned in she had whispered words to the woman to feign her death, take her child and flee the city. Her flamboyant flourish with her sword, already bloody from a guard the moments prior, was enough to simulate the killing blow as she shoved the woman into the water before the camera drones could angle to see her deception. When it was revealed, Bastet was beside herself with questions, demanding to know why Puppet had never told her. Puppet's only response was echo the very reason she had done it in the first place. To protect the secret, and thus the child, for as long as possible, she would endure Bastet's hatred of her. She would be the villain of the story. It was this revelation, this showing of compassion and reason-behind-appearances that would cause Bastet to hesitate during the show's finale when Puppet was turned against the team.

Ryoko wondered- perhaps she should have just been a villain after all. Then Bastet, Thor, all of them, would still be alive....

Like any upstanding citizen this commlink broadcasts its ID's basic profile, including links to various social media feeds, a dating profile, and corporate-modeling portfolios. In appearance the public-facing side of the commlink's node is everything a Horizon Corporate Citizen should be- vibrant and overly-sharing. Accessing private information, medical or other sensitive information does require authorization however.

This commlink contains a great number of mundane 'everyday' pictures and general files befitting the identity. It also contains a handful of files and pictures which could be seen as 'candid', 'private', 'incriminating' or 'damaging' to the identity; but are in truth, under dedicated scrutiny, fake and doctored.

When broadcasting in Normal mode this commlink's public face is one of a typical corporate citizen of Renraku; reserved and saying little that is not obvious. No signs of her former fame or life are broadcast, no social media feeds or archives are linked and much of her information is locked behind access-walls. While certainly not a 'cold' appearance, it does look professional and stereotypical Renraku in nature.

As this commlink is Ryoko's everyday 'real' commlink, it contains thousands of pictures, videos, files and apps involving every aspect of her life- legal and otherwise. This does include her software collection, personasofts and several recorded Sim-clips from key moments in her life that she carries with her for sentimental reasons.

"Alas going up against another big 10 without very specific orders from my superiors would be a violation of my contract. I am given a great deal of leeway yet there are a few hard red lines." Fix admits almost with the sound of regret in his voice. "I'm sure more pieces will be revealed soon enough. I am most eager to learn the outcome of this run. Sadly I must go." Fix smiles and offers a polite bow. "Sayonara Ryoko-san, break a leg." he fades away as the call disconects.

Puppet gives a wink and a wave to Fix as he makes his departure, she would have said aloud that she would keep him in the know- but the AI knew that already. She knew Fix had a great number of rules in place for him, Horizon kept a tight leash on what obviously could be a powerful matrix demi-god, for all she knew. Despite her knowledge of the matrix, and even the weird things that can sometimes 'happen' there- she'd never forced or even asked Fix to tell her about 'what' he was or 'how' he worked. He was a person, and to her, you wouldn't walk up to another living being and ask them those same questions. Hearing the matrix arguments about whether AIs were people seemed to utterly alien to her. Of course they were.

But with a reflexive motion that she failed to even perceive consciously Ryoko extended her hand and picked up her blade once again in the instant after Fix had disappeared. The visit, though brief, was a bright spot in the day. She made a mental note into her commlink to look into a mobile holo-projector of some kind. On a small drone that she could carry around perhaps. Regardless of her thoughts in the moment, Fix and her discussion had brought to the surface thoughts of their mission, the reasons and purposes behind things. Were they substantial enough to bring up with her team, though?

Her suspicions were just that. Suspicions. Unsubstantiated by anything actually viewable. No more than the idle thoughts of a media-made puppet dancing at the command of unseen hands. It would make her seem smart, maybe even prophetic, if she did mention it- which could be nice. She smirked at the idea, picking up the bottle of water and taking another long sip before setting it back down onto the island. She made the quick decision to forgo any late night personasoft-aided evening 'fun', instead walking out of her kitchen and across the mats she had laid out leading to her hot tub.

Discarding the last bits of clothing and picking up a pair of towels Ryoko first opened the cover, then swung her legs over and sunk deep into the hot water of the tub. Her incredibly long hair was soon wrapped up and secured within a head towel before she could finally relax. Her mind summoned an AR window above her lounging self, idle thoughts hopping onto the public node and browsing across a few nearby firearm supply stores. She would need to pick up a few common items before the mission- the warzone was a place she should not be casual with, so ensuring she had everything she needed was paramount in her mind. She found a place with the incredibly-common items available to order and pick up the next day, paid the handful of nuyen and with a dismissive thought- closed the window and finally let her body go within the water.

Her metal-sheathed bones, eager to absorb the heat, helped hold the warmth deep inside her body. The winter-chill in Denver would take getting used to. A few sets of winter clothing- maybe a big thick winter coat, would be in order. Something to go with her suit. She almost found herself snapping another AR window into existence but after a few seconds she decided to let the thought be. She wasn't going to be wearing her suit for the mission anyway- too corporate looking. Raise too much suspicion, which they'd been instructed not to do.

For the next 45 minutes the time would pass as Ryoko soaked up the heat and let the swirling, bubbling, jet-pushed water envelop her body in the most comforting way. About the only way she had been comfortable in feeling in a long time. She kept her eyes closed, wanting to shut out the world and enjoy the warmth- struggling to keep her own mind from reminding her of every mistake. Every life she had taken. All the death she was responsible for.
