Background

The Isle of Vern, home to the city of the same name and the many farms that once provided for the needs of the Andaron navy. The forests are long gone, aside from small preserves inhabited by a few remaining fey and woodland creatures.

Dorian Hawkwind was born on a small farm adjoining one of these fey preserves. He doesn’t know how he came to possess strange innate magical powers, and his parents have never spoken of it. Suffice to say that in appearance he has little in common with his father, his blue eyes and blond hair a far cry from the dark haired and rather swarthy farmer who raised him, although Dorian has never thought to question that.

Since the war with Iverina, the farm ran into lean times, with the demands of the navy being spread so thinly. As a handsome and charming young man, he was popular with the girls, both the local farm girls and the more worldly types to be found around the city. But as he grew to manhood, Dorian became increasingly bored and listless, craving a life of adventure like the sailors telling their tales in the inns and taverns of Vern city.

Eventually, he decided to leave the farm and run away to sea, signing on as a rating on the first available ship and spending his next few years learning seamanship and finding out about the great wide world out there. His prodigious gifts soon allowed him to distinguish himself, and in time he gained a commission as a junior officer aboard a caravel called The Higher Porpoise.

Aboard The Porpoise he made a name for himself, most notably in an engagement with an Iverinan warship called The Black Reiver, which clearly outclassed the lesser caravel. But Dorian used his battle skills and magic to lead the crew of The Porpoise in a heroic boarding effort, catching the over-confident enemy crew by surprise and ending with them capturing the larger ship as a prize.

With his new-found fame, the little caravel began to feel inadequate, and even the offer of the First Mate’s position wasn’t enough to keep him from craving something greater to be a part of; something with the potential to give him opportunities to build his reputation and spread his fame more widely. And so, when he heard that The Swift Vengeance was recruiting, he said farewell to the captain and crew of The Higher Porpoise and headed to The Purple Dolphin to offer his service.

  • 2 weeks later...

I see no problems but have only read the mechanics quickly; I'll probably only look at that level of detail for applications that make the short list. I've taken the liberty of editing the thread to turn the "complete" tag into a prefix for better visibility.
