Druidic Mentor (Ne'charri)

Recommended Posts

As a sorceress, Ne'charri was entitled to check in with the local offices of the League of Eldritch Practitioners, a guild of sorcerers and bards (mostly), and other arcanists that did their magic without extensive study, and it was there that she'd been able to find someone who could get her in touch with a Druid. One of the older sorcerers there, an old man named Yargo, was a former adventurer, and he'd adventured with a druid who had retired to maintain a glade and a body of water that was either a very large pond (according to Yargo) or a very small Lake (according to the Druid) about half a day's journey northwest of Catrico the City.

The Druid was an elf named Tryssea, and she never came to the city, though she did have a half-elf son in the city who ran a potions shop, and some of the potions he made were made by her.

Yargo, a friendly and helpful man, balding, rotund and with a grandfatherly beard, wrote a short letter she could show Tryssea (who Yargo assured Ne'charri was not the type to attack first, as long as you didn't start desecrating an area of nature she considered under her protection.)

As Ne'charri reached the Forest, she did pass by a very small village - a thorp, really, at best - that was gathered at the edge of the forest, nothing to write home about, and then following Yargo's directions, proceeded along the stream that would lead her to the Glade, which it did.

Perched atop a fallen tree that had halfway collapsed into the waters of the large pond/small lake that dominated the glade was an elf.

Judging elven ages was often hard, but this was no young, fresh into her second century of life elf, but one that had lived life - she had signs of aging - some lines, the slightest hint of crow's feet at her eyes, things like that. She had a half-circlet made of leaves, branches and antlers on her head, and she called out to Ne'charri when she approached.

"Who are you to approach my Glade, traveler?" She asked directly, but it wasn't hostile, and she made no move to draw the bow slung across her back, or the sickle at her belt. She walked along the fallen tree, reaching the shore and climbing down off the trunk onto the ground.

Ne'charriNe'charri had head mention of a league of some sort. Magicians, mages and performers of all sorts. Some seemed powerful, indeed, and Ne'charri found a few to be interesting as well. Still, the bureaucracy, the rules for rules sake, that seemed tedious to her. Fortunately, she didn't have trouble getting what she needed, and if it ever came that she would need information or services, now she'd know just where to go.

"Ne'charri. You're Tryessa? Yargo told me where to find you," she replied as she held his note up between her first and middle finger, pushing it towards the elf so she could inspect it.

"I'm a hunter..." she paused, as if she was hearing the words at the same time she was saying them. "At least, I was. Now, I'm different."  She looks down at her hands for a moment as she tries to make sense of her words. Finally she looked back up at Tryessa, "I could use your help."

Tryssea approached, taking the note, "So he did. Tell me, is Yargo still as fat as he was when last he visited?" She held her hands out in front of her stomach, falling somewhat short of just how rotund the old sorcerer was now. "You are no Druid, but I can see that nature has a strong hold upon you regardless," she said, looking Ne'charri over carefully. "Come." She gestured for Ne'charri to follow her to the edge of the waters.

"You say you were, a hunter? But are no longer? What occurred to make this change, if I may ask." She sounded curious, wondering. This was no interrogation. "But more relevantly, what help may I provide? This note says that you wish to learn the secrets of a magic not normally practiced by arcane craft." she held up Yargo's note. "How to strengthen your hands and feet, the weapons nature gave you, to be greater, to pierce through all manner of defenses. For what purpose, do you seek such magic?"

She didn't sound like she was rejecting the premise outright, at least.

"Only met him the once," Ne'charri replies, then adds, "but he's fat." Ne'charri followed towards the lake. Her eyes moved along the treeline, instinctually looking for danger, but finding none. The glimpses of the sky through the trees, the sounds of water running nearby and creatures running through the brush, all of it reminded her of home. This place was calm and made her feel nostalgic for a simpler time. It put her at ease in a way that she wasn't expecting.

"My tribe was lost. Taken. They are no more." Where one might expect sadness from such a statement, Ne'charri sounded more accepting, even cold. "My friends," she caught herself once more, seemingly surprised that she had referred to Sharpe and Keeper as such, but it felt right to her. "My friends fight for reasons that are not mine, but I fight because they do. I fight and kill to keep them safe..." as she trails off she knows that is only part of the reason, only a half truth. As she bows her head, she listens to the sounds around her, and feels the heart of the forest calming her troubled soul. "I am hurt and sad. But mostly, I am angry. I miss my tribe, and will bring death to those who took them. But I do not know who or where they are, so for now I bring death to those who try to hurt us. It is all I can do, all I have."

Ne'charri seems to surprise herself with her honesty and forthrightness. She wasn't expecting to bare her soul, but here she was. "When I was taken, my captors infused me with magic I do not understand. I have learned to take other shapes. I use these forms to fight, but I know I need to be stronger. I need magic that can help me. This is why Yargo sent me to you."

"They say, in cities, that vengeance is an unjust cause," Tryssea mused. "But it is the most primal cause of them all, one that nature itself has always seen and recognized. And yet," she added, looking Ne'charri over with a considering eye, "you fight for more than just vengeance, which is commendable - revenge alone is an imbalance, even if a necessary one. Had you come to me with little more than hate in your heart... but you do not." She walked a circle around Ne'charri, then nodded.

"I will teach you. I have never known a spellcaster of your sort to be able to use the spell you desire, but if there is an arcanist than can learn it, I suspect you may be the one. It will not be fast, nor will it be simple. And it will likely require the use of certain difficult to replace reagents," she grimaced as she said that, "But we can attend to that with time. To begin, I would see you take a shape, determine your technique."

Tryssea stepped back away from Ne'charri and began her own transformation, rapidly taking the form of a brown bear.

She looked almost fuzzy, and if not for the barely visible claws on her paws, one would almost think it was a harmless shape to adopt. But bears were of course, anything but harmless. The bear-druid cocked her head to the side, looking at Ne'charri.

The reagents thing is just to explain the 1000gp cost we discussed earlier, since it's not like most druids are running a business or anything.

spacer.pngNe'charri finds herself being drawn in by the druid's words, much more than she might have thought. She found herself nodding in agreement, though she stayed silent. Ne'charri watched Tryessa as she shifted and swelled, as fur and claws sprouted from her body. It was an awesome sight.

I wonder if that's what it looks like when I shift, Ne'charri thought to herself.

"Ah, the bear. Mighty, majestic. And few creatures of the forest are more deadly when provoked or threatened."

Ne'charri took a deep breath as she prepared for her own transformation. Almost unconsciously she started to growl low, which turned into a muttering of barely audible arcane speech. Ne'charri's own body and limbs began to briefly look bloated as they contorted and changed, and in a few seconds her transformation into a fearsome tigresss was finished. Her dagger-like incisors protruded from her mouth.

"The dread tiger, greatest of hunters. This is the form I choose this day."

"A great hunter indeed." Trtssea agreed, her voice a low, rumbling growl coming from a bear's throat, but still sounding vaguely like herself. "If I am to teach you the magic of nature, we must get you in touch with nature. You must feel the song of the earth, feel the whisper of the wind, the voice of the water, the words of the trees and plants. I can help you do that." She ran over to the edge of the water, then around the edge of it, to the other side. "Come to this place, and listen. Do not hear - listen." The bear actually beckoned with a paw, then settled back on it's haunches, closing its eyes.

When Ne'charri came to the spot that Tryssea directed her to, Tryssea directed her to meditate, as she might when she gathered her spell energy for the day, but as a tiger. "But do not focus on your magic, but on yourself, and your place in the wider world."

OOC

Cue the training montage. I imagine there's no need to do a blow by blow, but this seemed a solid way to start it.

spacer.pngNe'charri followed, though her pace was slower, more leisurely. While Ne'charri could easily adopt different forms, she still wasn't at home in them in the way Tryessa was. Ne'charri saw the tiger as more of a tool, or an enhancement of her own predatory insticts, and not as a natural part of who she was.

"Listen," Ne'charri echoed the druids words quietly to herself. She sat as still as she could, opening her senses to the world around her. She had spent a few years hunting game for her tribe, and this felt reminiscent of those times. She would sit still and quiet for hours at time waiting for game to approach a nearby stream to drink or patch of bushes to eat leaves and berries. During those times she kept her senses trained on every sound, smell and sight, but it was impossible for her to keep her mind from wandering completely. This was what she felt here; the more she focused on herself, the more her mind strayed.

She began to recall her time in captivity, of watching her tribemates suffer terrible experiments at the hands of her mysterious captors. The memories were so vivid, it was like she was back there. The anger, panic and guilt she felt then, it was welling up insider her again now. Any physical pain she experienced while suffering her own experiments paled in comparison to the emotional turmoil she carried with her every day since then. As she watched herself struggle against the bars of the cage and the straps of the experiment tables, in her mind she no longer saw herself as she was then, a human woman, but how she was now. Her form melded with the others she's found herself morphing into since then: the gargoyle, the great tiger...and still others she couldn't quite sense but that she knew were waiting for her to understand and assume.

Tryssea spent the rest of the day teaching her to listen to the nature, and listen to the instincts of her form - druidic transformation was not merely a tool for the utility of it, in travel or combat. Nor was it even simply to interact with other animals on their level. It wasn't even just to see the world from the eyes and ears and nose of an animal - to feel what they feel, taste what they taste, see as they see. It was all those things, but it was also to understand the very essence of being.

For Tryssea, to become a bear, or a hawk, was to understand, even if for a few moments in the process, the very essence of what it was to be a hawk, of what it was to be a bear. In time, druids could even take the form of plants, though Tryssea did not have that level of understanding yet, and may never reach it. But even then it was, to understand, for the barest of time, what it was to be the plant they take the form of.

Tryssea was not trying to get Ne'charri to that point - she was not a druid, and it might even be possible with the magic of the arcane. But it was the best way Tryssea knew to help her understand the enormity of druidic magic, the different... 'flavor' of it, and how it felt. If she could understand how the magic was, she could then - theoretically - 'translate' the spell she wanted to know, into a form she could cast.

The second day was spent with Tryssea explaining the more practical mechanics of druidic spellcasting. It was, in appearance, similar - the verbal and somatic components were not the same, but they were recognizable, the role of Tryssea's druidic focus serving as a sort of... external prop for directing the flow of magic. Ne'charri's power came from within her, whereas Tryssea was more of a channel - like the difference between a lake and a river.

Of course, in the end, both had limits on what they could do - Ne'charri could run dry of spells, and Tryssea would reach a point where she taxed her body's ability to channel magic. The analogy of lake and river broke down there a little, the elf admitted with a soft self-deprecating laugh, but by the end of the second day, Ne'charri could start to understand the key differences in the... mechanics, as it were, of the druid and sorcerous magics.

"It is strange," Ne'charri noted, "to become the creatures I have hunted. To see and experience the world as they do." She pauses as her eyes drift towards the horizon, and she gets lost in memories of an age long past for her. "I was taught to treat prey with reverence and respect. I find that is often easier to do with the animals and beasts then with people. Surviving on instinct is very different than inflicting hurt on others, and I feel more strongly about that now then I did before I met you."

"And my magic, it grows. I can feel the connection with my forms deepening, strengthening. They are more a part of me now than ever before."

"Prey animals play their role in the cycle of life, and few predators kill more than they must to live and to survive. Your people who taught you to treat the prey with respect were wise." Tryssea agreed. "I think that tomorrow, our third day, it will be possible for you to practice the spell you seek. I don't expect it to be quite fully enactable yet, but I sense that you have developed the necessary connection to nature, and understanding, to begin."

She made a sweet-smelling potion or concoction over the fire, cooking it in a bowl carved from stone. "This should help," she said, gesturing to it. Making it had required several rare herbs and berries, ones she couldn't find naturally in this area, but Tryssea had mentioned rare reagents would be needed, so that worked. "Fortunately, it tastes as good as it smells." She added, laughing softly. "It is a potion I have brewed for other druids, when teaching them spells. And taken it in myself, at times."

Ne'charri didn't hesitate to quaff the elixir. She trusted Tryessa enough at this point, and much more than many she had previously met in her travels. If Tryessa wanted to harm Ne'charri, she'd already had plenty of opportunities anyway. Whatever the drink may have tasted like, Ne'charri barely gave it time to rest on her tongue and she gulped it down, then handed the vessel back to the druid. "Thank you," she said as she reached for her water skin to wash it down.

Ne'charri had found herself thinking about her companions, and wondering how they fared. She had come to care about them more than she had initially realized, and more than she might have intended. She knew they were each capable and dangerous in their own right, but the part of her that never quite felt safe and was always a little on edge couldn't help but worry.

"Tryessa, I hesitate to ask, but there's something else I wonder if you could help me with," Ne'charri said as she reached into her tunic to pull out a folded piece of parchment. "We found someone working for our enemies, and he claimed to be a druid. I believe him, and when they abandoned their fortress we found him dead. But I have a note from him, written in a language I cannot read."

Ne'charri offered the note to Tryessa. "Would you tell me what it says?"

The potion was indeed a sweet, vaguely floral and fruity tasting concoction, far better than most potions she'd drunk.

"The Druidic Tongue is written but rarely," Tryssea considered, "and one never taught to non-Druids." She accepted the note, looking at it. "You say he worked for your enemies, and then he was killed when they abandoned their fortress? That would explain this note then - they betrayed him. The note asks that it be brought to 'Relora', to warn her that those that the 'Eyes' that pledged their aid killed him are not to be trusted." She didn't say 'Eyes' like she grasped what was being referenced - though who would think it referred to a long dead intelligence arm of a dead empire?

"If this were written in anything other than the druidic tongue, I would not assume this - but Relora is an Archdruid, one of the highest of our order for many hundreds of miles. I would assume he means for this note to be brought to her."

"I shall see this note delivered then," Ne'charri said as she took the note and tucked it back into her clothing. "But for now we should focus on our purpose here. What should I expect from this potion?"

"When it achieves full effect, you will experience dreams of yourself in animal form, in the deep wilderness. You must find your way to the heart of that wilderness, whatever form it takes - snow-capped mountains, caverns teeming with the strange life of the underground, forests, oceans even. You'll need to listen to the heart of the wilderness to find it. Once you do in your dream, you will wake, and I believe it will be possible for you to cast the spell you seek, fully. It will take another few days to fully master the technique to be able to perform it quickly, 'on demand' as it were, and we will continue with that, but if you find the heart of the wilderness in your dream, it should mean you've truly learned how to listen to nature. At least enough for this spell, anyway."

"Nature has a will of it's own - not a mind, as such, and it's will is distributed, diffuse. It is a sleeping, dreaming god, that will never wake, can never wake, can never do more than experience the lowest levels of dreaming... but to use the magic of nature, you must, even for a moment, reach and touch that will. You are, I believe, very close to that level of understanding."

Mechanics

You don't have to write out Ne'charri's experience of the dream unless you want, we can assume she succeeds and then, as suggested, the remainder of the week is getting familiar enough with the spell to cast it by instinct under pressure, as it were.
