Edit: application done: Alfrid Shoven Story The Shovens are a family of men-at-arms dedicated to the Crusader cause, most of whom seek membership in one of the knightly orders of Mendev. Sometimes a family member joined a temple to serve a divine of their choosing. The men of the Shoven family tree are a prolific bunch, seeding the ranks of the Crusader army and earning a reputation for their zealous devotion to the cause and... well, being unchaste skirt-chasers, and the implications that come with that. Their blood is widespread, and their bastard children many. One of the biggest hurdles for a Shoven man looking to settle down is overcoming the stigma. Some have speculated that there is something in their blood that ignites their amorous pursuits. A handful are even rakish, but those fellows are seen as the black sheep of the bunch. Regardless, whether they are hated, praised, or mocked, the main line of the family are well known for their piety and skill at arms, and are seldom turned away from armies seeking to fill their ranks. Alfrid himself was a black sheep of the family, but mind, only in that he didn't meet the Shoven bar for crusade zealotry. Nevertheless, he was a man's man, a consummate tournament lover, both as a spectator and a hedge knight participant. He found camaraderie among fellow athletes in the games who worshiped Kurgess, and became a Kurgessan himself, which earned him a pat on the back by the family. He was kind, thoughtful, not a deep thinker by any stretch, but brave and bold like the rest - and truth be told, a show-off, and a skirt-chaser like many of his Shoven cousins. He may even have fathered a few illegitimate children of his own. He shrugged off his relatives' annoyance with his contentment and lack of concern with the battle between good and evil. Let his cousins fight that battle. Instead, he focused his attention on sport, spirited rivalries, and romantic conquests. He didn't get to pursue his own interests for long, before the Fourth Crusade kicked off. The lad's da practically pressganged him into a knightly order, but really it was the emptying of the arenas and tournament grounds that moved Alfrid to greener pastures, to seek competition in the army. Sadly, Crusader training could not save him from being unlucky, and he was immolated in a brimorak ambush. His bones would have been left on the battlefield were it not for Ana, his half-sister, who enlisted a sorcerer's aid to find them, and then had them buried. At the end of the war, Alfrid was resurrected. He was not the only Shoven brought back to life, only one of several, who regarded it as a waste to grant the thrill seeker a second chance; save for Ana, now a veteran Armiger of the Fourth Crusade herself, who paid for his resurrection out of pocket. Overjoyed and eternally grateful, Alfrid... went straight back to the tournament grounds, to Ana's mix of relief and frustration. Why bother? After all, Mendev now had a dragon. Alfrid's trade and his hobby are one and the same. He has an appreciation for animals, particularly horses and riding on them, and his tour in the Fourth Crusade saw him educated in war machinery and squiring, but beyond that, there is little outside of his trade that interests him - including war machinery and squiring - though offers of ale, song, or a friendly game, are seldom spurned. If a subject or an object relates his martial sport, such as a training manual, it may grab his focus, proving that he is not averse to book learning. 4713 AR, Armasse... For Alfrid, the celebration of Armasse promises to glut him on his appetites and interests: wine, women, songs, and best of all, martial competition! Jousting, melee! Oh, and archery, one supposes for the faint of heart. Alfrid actually lives in a town way up north along the West Sellen, called Reimoor. He has decided against going all the way to the capital when New Kenabres has its own decent tournament circuit planned for the weeklong celebration. He has made his way to a bustling cafe to boast and start the celebration hard and early... Description Alfrid is a powerful young man of middling height. He wears a cocksure grin on a freshly shorn, well-defined jaw, and he speaks with a strong rich voice. When in high spirits, he seems to draw from an endless reserve of energy and cheer, provided no one spoils it with ill news or barbed insults.
