Chapter 1: Faith and the Fey

Argus, in brass-plated armor and holding his glaive.Argus enjoys his beverage, but he feels a sharp pain, dead-center in his chest. The sentinel closes his eyes for a moment while Rodery speaks. The worst part about aging so far is all the little things that do not work like they used to. A burp lost somewhere along the way? The pain blossoms, then dissipates into nothingness. Argus reopens his eyes, then looks over to Barris to see whether he has any particular requests for the evening.

"Tell me what you mean by mingling with the Fey. Who and what does that entail?" He asks Rodery. "Yes to a refill, my thanks! And are there still copper-ante games to be found hereabouts? Or has the town's prosperity priced me out of its gambling dens?"

"I believe I spoke earlier about what their sort of mingling entails," Barris chuckles. Already halfway through his mug, the scholar appears in fantastic spirits, and he shares a knowing wink with Rodery. "It doesn't take a scholar to know what sort of diversions might turn a hard-working man or woman away from the Martyr, hm? A humble life and pride in one's work are cold comfort compared to evenings spent with drinks in one hand and doxies in the other." His light tone betrays a bit of an edge surfacing in his voice, though its direction, and in fact its source, are hard to discern. He takes another big swig of his drink, waving away his tome before settling it back into its harness. "Particularly in a life such as this one. There isn't much prayer can offer them that a mug of spiced ale can't."

Aurelia and Callie

spacer.png

Aurelia and Callie both know people in their own ways. Aurelia has had centuries to tell apart the righteous from the wicked, the cunning from the basic. Callie's down-to-earth living has helped her get to better understand common folk. Both can see an intelligence in the man's eyes, a sharpness that goes along with his rough appearance. "Well, you wear your station on your person Abbess. Besides, you left quite the impression on a couple of the folk who were around sixty years ago. Can't be that many silver-haired, Elvish warriors dedicated to Her these days." His eyes turn to Callie and there's something there. "And I've seen a picture of you. Your brother's done some fine work for me, Callie."

He lets that news sink in. "What can I say. This town like most used to be all about the Martyred Radiance. Times change. The temples offered less and less, and by the time other folk, Fey and mortal alike, weren't interested in the sermons any more there was but a single burnt out priest who barely needed a nudge to pack up and leave. I apologize if you find my establishment distasteful, but the land and building was empty and ready for a new use. Figured a place for dancing and merriment was a kinder fate than to just tear the building down and replace it with public toilets."

He has a point with that colorful comparison, but it's not easy to see that he's giving an account of things to make himself not look too bad. No outward lies per se, but also choosing what details are important to give, what to weigh his actions against.

He leans back lifting his cup. Up close it's clear that he's drinking some sort of tea, nothing with spirits in it. He's very much sober. "As to the other faithful, I'm sure a few folk still have baubles and trinkets, but most people just moved on with their lives. Not like anyone who loved Her was chased out or anything so cruel. No, they just kept going to work, and simply had more time on their hands instead of their normal prayers and worship." There's an edge to him as he weighs both women, seeing if they'll be any trouble for him. "You can call me Marstly."

Argus and Barris

spacer.png

"Aye, your friend has the right of it." Rodery agrees with Barris's assessment on diversions and loss of faith. "Faith gives a man peace on the inside, but lots of things can give him peace around him. Can't say I'm much better. Was getting old. Lost my strength, knees and back were aching all the time. Then I get the chance to be a defender of the forest, relive the good old days. Can't say I debated for too long about it."

His smile returns as he moves onto more fun topics. "And sure, some can lose a few coppers to a life's work in a single night. Best to do copper games with friends, and promise a good tip for the drinks else they'll ignore you for richer customers. As to the Fey, they're a fun lot, mostly, but they can be a bit intense. Nothin' like drinking with Satyrs, a goat-horned lass less than half my size drank me under half-a-year-ago. Pixies, dryads, sprites, they all have their quirks that are fun to be around if you want to get to know someone with curious worldview. Of course, there's also the Beloved of Arbormast, but you don't get to just walk up to her, she invites you."

Although the initial pain leaves Barris, the ill-feeling is still there. Manageable, but impossible to ignore. For a moment he can swear that he sees someone looking at him from the corner of his eye, but as he turns there's nothing. He can't make out anything, size, shape, temperament... perhaps he was just seeing things.

Calar is a bit surprised to be sitting in balcony seats. He isn't used to anything so opulent ever. Although he isn't much for dating or flirting, he does know manners and carefully guides the Beloved to her seat by her hand and waiting for her to sit before sitting himself. His eyes widen slightly at her comment and he takes a moment to compose himself before responding. He then says, "Wow, you flatter me. You can see my destiny? You are exceptional in just about every way, aren't you?"

He smiles softly and continues by saying, "You already know I'm a cleric of the Martyred Radiance, but what you may not know is me and my companions are on a sacred Pilgrimage. It's a rare honor to journey to such a sacred site. It's no secret that the number of people who count themselves among Her faithful have been getting smaller. I have my own views on it, but I'm only one person. I just think it's too easy to forget why She is so important and how She is here every day in every man or woman who appreciates the fruits of their hard work. But it's so easy to forget, because that's just every day stuff. We need to do better as a religion getting out there and showing our worth; we've sat back and enjoyed the popularity and forgotten we need to work hard too."

He sighs softly as it's been a sore spot for him for years. Even the archpriest is just going through the motions, but he does not need to belittle Her highest priest. There's so much more work to be done.

Calar cocks his head to the side and thinks on what questions he wants to ask the Beloved. She is so curious and has his interest. Taking a sip of the water beside him, he let's it linger in his mouth a moment before swallowing. He finally says, "I have many questions, but I do not want to jump ahead. Maybe the best way to know how you can help, is to better understand about you. This town is so...unique! I have never seen so many fey congregated into one place. How did you come to Arbormast? What's your interest in the town?"

"Corrin?" Callie's surprise is plain; he clearly hadn't been on her mind for a while. "He's here?" Callie... she still heard the rest of what he was saying, and she still had no intention of letting him get away without changing the name. But that wasn't the most important thing right now. Family came first.

What was Corrin doing here? And what was he getting up to in a town like this? And... he carried a picture of her... perhaps he hadn't forgotten about his family as much she imagined, or feared, he might have. "Where is he?" It's all she wants to know from Marstly; the rest of the answers she'd rather hear from the horse's mouth.

You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence of your faith, though you must provide any material components needed for spells. Those who share your religion will support you (but only you) at a modest lifestyle. You might also have ties to a specific temple dedicated to your chosen deity or pantheon, and you have a residence there. This could be the temple where you used to serve, if you remain on good terms with it, or a temple where you have found a new home. While near your temple, you can call upon the priests for assistance, provided the assistance you ask for is not hazardous and you remain in good standing with your temple.[/OOC][/table][/spoiler] [spoiler=Abilities and Features][OOC=Divine Sense]The presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such forces. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type (celestial, fiend, or undead) of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity (the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, for instance). Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the hallow spell. You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier. When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.[/OOC] [OOC=Lay on Hands]Your blessed touch can heal wounds. You have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you take a long rest. With that pool, you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your paladin level × 5. As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool. Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from your pool of healing to cure the target of one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it. You can cure multiple diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single use of Lay on Hands, expending hit points separately for each one. This feature has no effect on undead and constructs.[/OOC] [OOC=Divine Smite]Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon's damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend, to a maximum of 6d8.[/OOC] [OOC=Fighting Style - Defense]Fighting Style At 2nd level, you adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can't take the same Fighting Style option more than once, even if you get to choose again. Defense While you are wearing armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC.[/OOC] [OOC=Spellcasting]Spellcasting By 2nd level, you have learned to draw on divine magic through meditation and prayer to cast spells as a cleric does. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting and chapter 11 for the paladin spell list. Preparing and Casting Spells The Paladin table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your paladin spells. To cast one of your paladin spells of 1st level or higher, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest. You prepare the list of paladin spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the paladin spell list. When you do so, choose a number of paladin spells equal to your Charisma modifier + half your paladin level, rounded down (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. For example, if you are a 5th-level paladin, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Charisma of 14, your list of prepared spells can include four spells of 1st or 2nd-level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell cure wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or a 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from your list of prepared spells. You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of paladin spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list. Spellcasting Ability Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your paladin spells, since their power derives from the strength of your convictions. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a paladin spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one. Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier Spellcasting Focus You can use a holy symbol as a spellcasting focus for your paladin spells.[/OOC] [OOC=Divine Health]By 3rd level, the divine magic flowing through you makes you immune to disease.[/OOC] [OOC=Sacred Oath - Channel Divinity]Sacred Oath When you reach 3rd level, you swear the oath that binds you as a paladin forever. Up to this time you have been in a preparatory stage, committed to the path but not yet sworn to it. Now you choose from the list of available oaths. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Those features include oath spells and the Channel Divinity feature. Oath Spells Each oath has a list of associated spells. You gain access to these spells at the levels specified in the oath description. Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared. Oath spells don't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day. If you gain an oath spell that doesn't appear on the paladin spell list, the spell is nonetheless a paladin spell for you. Channel Divinity Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects. Each Channel Divinity option provided by your oath explains how to use it. When you use your Channel Divinity, you choose which option to use. You must then finish a short or long rest to use your Channel Divinity again. Some Channel Divinity effects require saving throws. When you use such an effect from this class, the DC equals your paladin spell save DC. Channel Divinity: Harness Divine Power 3rd-level paladin optional feature You can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to fuel your spells. As a bonus action, you touch your holy symbol, utter a prayer, and regain one expended spell slot, the level of which can be no higher than half your proficiency bonus (rounded up). The number of times you can use this feature is based on the level you've reached in this class: 3rd level, once; 7th level, twice; and 15th level, thrice. You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. Breaking Your Oath A paladin tries to hold to the highest standards of conduct, but even the most virtuous paladin is fallible. Sometimes the right path proves too demanding, sometimes a situation calls for the lesser of two evils, and sometimes the heat of emotion causes a paladin to transgress his or her oath. A paladin who has broken a vow typically seeks absolution from a cleric who shares his or her faith or from another paladin of the same order. The paladin might spend an all-night vigil in prayer as a sign of penitence, or undertake a fast or similar act of self-denial. After a rite of confession and forgiveness, the paladin starts fresh. If a paladin willfully violates his or her oath and shows no sign of repentance, the consequences can be more serious. At the DM's discretion, an impenitent paladin might be forced to abandon this class and adopt another, or perhaps to take the Oathbreaker paladin option that appears in the Dungeon Master's Guide.[/OOC] [OOC=Oath of Devotion]The Oath of Devotion binds a paladin to the loftiest ideals of justice, virtue, and order. Sometimes called cavaliers, white knights, or holy warriors, these paladins meet the ideal of the knight in shining armor, acting with honor in pursuit of justice and the greater good. They hold themselves to the highest standards of conduct, and some, for better or worse, hold the rest of the world to the same standards. Many who swear this oath are devoted to gods of law and good and use their gods' tenets as the measure of their devotion. They hold angels—the perfect servants of good—as their ideals, and incorporate images of angelic wings into their helmets or coats of arms. Tenets of Devotion Though the exact words and strictures of the Oath of Devotion vary, paladins of this oath share these tenets. Honesty. Don't lie or cheat. Let your word be your promise. Courage. Never fear to act, though caution is wise. Compassion. Aid others, protect the weak, and punish those who threaten them. Show mercy to your foes, but temper it with wisdom. Honor. Treat others with fairness, and let your honorable deeds be an example to them. Do as much good as possible while causing the least amount of harm. Duty. Be responsible for your actions and their consequences, protect those entrusted to your care, and obey those who have just authority over you. Oath Spells You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed. Oath of Devotion SpellsPaladin Level Spells 3rd protection from evil and good, sanctuary 5th lesser restoration, zone of truth 9th beacon of hope, dispel magic 13th freedom of movement, guardian of faith 17th commune, flame strike[/OOC] [OOC=Channel Divinity - Sacred Weapon]As an action, you can imbue one weapon that you are holding with positive energy, using your Channel Divinity. For 1 minute, you add your Charisma modifier to attack rolls made with that weapon (with a minimum bonus of +1). The weapon also emits bright light in a 20-foot radius and dim light 20 feet beyond that. If the weapon is not already magical, it becomes magical for the duration. You can end this effect on your turn as part of any other action. If you are no longer holding or carrying this weapon, or if you fall unconscious, this effect ends.[/OOC] [OOC=Channel Divinity - Turn the Unholy]As an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring fiends and undead, using your Channel Divinity. Each fiend or undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can't willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can't take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.[/OOC] [OOC=ASI - +2 Charisma]When you reach 4th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. If your DM allows the use of feats, you may instead take a feat.[/OOC] [OOC=Extra Attack]Beginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.[/OOC] [OOC=Aura of Protection]Starting at 6th level, whenever you or a friendly creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw, the creature gains a bonus to the saving throw equal to your Charisma modifier (with a minimum bonus of +1). You must be conscious to grant this bonus. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.[/OOC] [OOC=Aura of Devotion]Starting at 7th level, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you can't be charmed while you are conscious. At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.[/OOC] [OOC=ASI +2 Dex]When you reach 8th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature. If your DM allows the use of feats, you may instead take a feat.[/OOC] [OOC=Feat - Defensive Duelist]When you are wielding a finesse weapon with which you are proficient and another creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to add your proficiency bonus to your AC for that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss you.[/OOC] [OOC=Darkvision]Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.[/OOC] [OOC=Keen Senses]You have proficiency in the Perception skill.[/OOC] [OOC=Fey Ancestry]You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.[/OOC] [OOC=Trance]Elves don't need to sleep. Instead, they meditate deeply, remaining semiconscious, for 4 hours a day. (The Common word for such meditation is "trance.") While meditating, you can dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive through years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep. If you meditate during a long rest, you finish the rest after only 4 hours. You otherwise obey all the rules for a long rest; only the duration is changed.[/OOC] [OOC=Elf Weapon Training]You have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.[/OOC] [OOC=Cantrip - Minor Illusion]You know one cantrip of your choice from the wizard spell list. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it.[/OOC] [OOC=Background Feature - Shelter of the Faithful]As an acolyte, you command the respect of those who share your faith, and you can perform the religious ceremonies of your deity. You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence of your faith, though you must provide any material components needed for spells. Those who share your religion will support you (but only you) at a modest lifestyle. Abilities and Features

Divine SenseThe presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears.

When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.

Lay on HandsYour blessed touch can heal wounds.

This feature has no effect on undead and constructs.

Divine SmiteStarting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon's damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend, to a maximum of 6d8.
Fighting Style - DefenseFighting Style

At 2nd level, you adopt a particular style of fighting as your specialty. Choose one of the following options. You can't take the same Fighting Style option more than once, even if you get to choose again.

Defense

While you are wearing armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC.

SpellcastingSpellcasting

By 2nd level, you have learned to draw on divine magic through meditation and prayer to cast spells as a cleric does. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting and chapter 11 for the paladin spell list.

Preparing and Casting Spells

The Paladin table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your paladin spells.

Spellcasting Ability

Charisma is your spellcasting ability for your paladin spells, since their power derives from the strength of your convictions. You use your Charisma whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Charisma modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a paladin spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spellcasting Focus

You can use a holy symbol as a spellcasting focus for your paladin spells.

Divine HealthBy 3rd level, the divine magic flowing through you makes you immune to disease.
Sacred Oath - Channel DivinitySacred Oath

When you reach 3rd level, you swear the oath that binds you as a paladin forever. Up to this time you have been in a preparatory stage, committed to the path but not yet sworn to it. Now you choose from the list of available oaths.

Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Those features include oath spells and the Channel Divinity feature.

Oath Spells

Each oath has a list of associated spells.

Channel Divinity

Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects.

Channel Divinity: Harness Divine Power

3rd-level paladin optional feature

You can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to fuel your spells.

Breaking Your Oath

A paladin tries to hold to the highest standards of conduct, but even the most virtuous paladin is fallible.

At the DM's discretion, an impenitent paladin might be forced to abandon this class and adopt another, or perhaps to take the Oathbreaker paladin option that appears in the Dungeon Master's Guide.

Oath of DevotionThe Oath of Devotion binds a paladin to the loftiest ideals of justice, virtue, and order.

Tenets of Devotion

Though the exact words and strictures of the Oath of Devotion vary, paladins of this oath share these tenets.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.
Oath of Devotion SpellsPaladin Level Spells
3rd protection from evil and good, sanctuary
5th lesser restoration, zone of truth
9th beacon of hope, dispel magic
13th freedom of movement, guardian of faith

Channel Divinity - Sacred WeaponAs an action, you can imbue one weapon that you are holding with positive energy, using your Channel Divinity.

If you are no longer holding or carrying this weapon, or if you fall unconscious, this effect ends.

Channel Divinity - Turn the UnholyAs an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring fiends and undead, using your Channel Divinity.

If there's nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.

ASI - +2 CharismaWhen you reach 4th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

If your DM allows the use of feats, you may instead take a feat.

Extra AttackBeginning at 5th level, you can attack twice, instead of once, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Aura of ProtectionStarting at 6th level, whenever you or a friendly creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw, the creature gains a bonus to the saving throw equal to your Charisma modifier (with a minimum bonus of +1). You must be conscious to grant this bonus.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

Aura of DevotionStarting at 7th level, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you can't be charmed while you are conscious.

At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

ASI +2 DexWhen you reach 8th level, you can increase one ability score of your choice by 2, or you can increase two ability scores of your choice by 1. As normal, you can't increase an ability score above 20 using this feature.

If your DM allows the use of feats, you may instead take a feat.

Feat - Defensive DuelistWhen you are wielding a finesse weapon with which you are proficient and another creature hits you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction to add your proficiency bonus to your AC for that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss you.
DarkvisionAccustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Keen SensesYou have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Fey AncestryYou have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.
TranceElves don't need to sleep.

You otherwise obey all the rules for a long rest; only the duration is changed.

Elf Weapon TrainingYou have proficiency with the longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow.
Cantrip - Minor IllusionYou know one cantrip of your choice from the wizard spell list. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it.
Background Feature - Shelter of the FaithfulAs an acolyte, you command the respect of those who share your faith, and you can perform the religious ceremonies of your deity.

While near your temple, you can call upon the priests for assistance, provided the assistance you ask for is not hazardous and you remain in good standing with your temple.

"Magic"

"Spellcasting"

By 2nd level, you have learned to draw on divine magic through meditation and prayer to cast spells as a cleric does. See chapter 10 for the general rules of spellcasting and chapter 11 for the paladin spell list.

Preparing and Casting Spells

The Paladin table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your paladin spells.

Spell Save DC: 8 + Prof Bonus + Ability Modifier = 15
Spell Attack Modifier: Prof Bonus + Ability Modifier = 7

Cantrips Minor Illusion

1st-level: Shield of Faith, Bless, Command, Divine Favor, Detect Magic, Ceremony, Protection from Evil and Good, Sanctuary

2nd-level: Find Steed , Prayer of Healing , Lesser Restoration , Zone of Truth

Minor IllusionIllusion cantrip
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: S, M (a bit of fleece)
Duration: 1 minute

You create a sound or an image of an object within range that lasts for the duration. The illusion also ends if you dismiss it as an action or cast this spell again.

If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, a beating of drums, or any other sound you choose. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends.

If you create an image of an object—such as a chair, muddy footprints, or a small chest—it must be no larger than a 5-foot cube. The image can't create sound, light, smell, or any other sensory effect. Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.

If a creature uses its action to examine the sound or image, the creature can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check against your spell save DC. If a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the illusion becomes faint to the creature.

Shield of Faith1st-level abjuration
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S, M (a small parchment with a bit of holy text written on it)
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

A shimmering field appears and surrounds a creature of your choice within range, granting it a +2 bonus to AC for the duration.

Bless1st-level enchantment
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a sprinkling of holy water)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You bless up to three creatures of your choice within range. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.
At Higher Levels.

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can target one additional creature for each slot level above 1st.

Command1st-level enchantment
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V
Duration: 1 round

You speak a one-word command to a creature you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or follow the command on its next turn. The spell has no effect if the target is undead, if it doesn't understand your language, or if your command is directly harmful to it.

Some typical commands and their effects follow. You might issue a command other than one described here. If you do so, the DM determines how the target behaves. If the target can't follow your command, the spell ends.
Approach.

The target moves toward you by the shortest and most direct route, ending its turn if it moves within 5 feet of you.
Drop.

The target drops whatever it is holding and then ends its turn.
Flee.

The target spends its turn moving away from you by the fastest available means.
Grovel.

The target falls prone and then ends its turn.
Halt.

The target doesn't move and takes no actions. A flying creature stays aloft, provided that it is able to do so. If it must move to stay aloft, it flies the minimum distance needed to remain in the air.
At Higher Levels.

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, you can affect one additional creature for each slot level above 1st. The creatures must be within 30 feet of each other when you target them.

Divine Favor1st-level evocation
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Your prayer empowers you with divine radiance. Until the spell ends, your weapon attacks deal an extra 1d4 radiant damage on a hit.

Detect Magic1st-level divination (ritual)
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.

The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.

Ceremony1st-level abjuration (ritual)
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (25 gp worth of powdered silver, which the spell consumes)
Duration: Instantaneous

You perform a special religious ceremony that is infused with magic. When you cast the spell, choose one of the following rites, the target of which must be within 10 feet of you throughout the casting.
Atonement.

You touch one willing creature whose alignment has changed, and you make a DC 20 Wisdom (Insight) check. On a successful check, you restore the target to its original alignment.
Bless Water.

You touch one vial of water and cause it to become holy water.
Coming of Age.

You touch one humanoid who is a young adult. For the next 24 hours, whenever the target makes an ability check, it can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the ability check. A creature can benefit from this rite only once.
Dedication.

You touch one humanoid who wishes to be dedicated to your god's service. For the next 24 hours, whenever the target makes a saving throw, it can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the save. A creature can benefit from this rite only once.
Funeral Rite.

You touch one corpse, and for the next 7 days, the target can't become undead by any means short of a wish spell.
Wedding.

You touch adult humanoids willing to be bonded together in marriage. For the next 7 days, each target gains a +2 bonus to AC while they are within 30 feet of each other. A creature can benefit from this rite again only if widowed.

Protection from Evil and Good1st-level abjuration
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (holy water or powdered silver and iron, which the spell consumes)
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

Until the spell ends, one willing creature you touch is protected against certain types of creatures: aberrations, celestials, elementals, fey, fiends, and undead.

The protection grants several benefits. Creatures of those types have disadvantage on attack rolls against the target. The target also can't be charmed, frightened, or possessed by them. If the target is already charmed, frightened, or possessed by such a creature, the target has advantage on any new saving throw against the relevant effect.

Sanctuary1st-level abjuration
Casting Time: 1 bonus action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a small silver mirror)
Duration: 1 minute

You ward a creature within range against attack. Until the spell ends, any creature who targets the warded creature with an attack or a harmful spell must first make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature must choose a new target or lose the attack or spell. This spell doesn't protect the warded creature from area effects, such as the explosion of a fireball.

If the warded creature makes an attack, casts a spell that affects an enemy, or deals damage to another creature, this spell ends.

Find Steed2nd-level conjuration
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You summon a spirit that assumes the form of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed, creating a long-lasting bond with it. Appearing in an unoccupied space within range, the steed takes on a form that you choose: a warhorse, a pony, a camel, an elk, or a mastiff. (Your DM might allow other animals to be summoned as steeds.) The steed has the statistics of the chosen form, though it is a celestial, fey, or fiend (your choice) instead of its normal type. Additionally, if your steed has an Intelligence of 5 or less, its Intelligence becomes 6, and it gains the ability to understand one language of your choice that you speak.

Your steed serves you as a mount, both in combat and out, and you have an instinctive bond with it that allows you to fight as a seamless unit. While mounted on your steed, you can make any spell you cast that targets only you also target your steed.

When the steed drops to 0 hit points, it disappears, leaving behind no physical form. You can also dismiss your steed at any time as an action, causing it to disappear. In either case, casting this spell again summons the same steed, restored to its hit point maximum.

While your steed is within 1 mile of you, you can communicate with each other telepathically.

You can't have more than one steed bonded by this spell at a time. As an action, you can release the steed from its bond at any time, causing it to disappear.

Lesser Restoration2nd-level conjuration
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You summon a spirit that assumes the form of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal steed, creating a long-lasting bond with it. Appearing in an unoccupied space within range, the steed takes on a form that you choose: a warhorse, a pony, a camel, an elk, or a mastiff. You can't have more than one steed bonded by this spell at a time. As an action, you can release the steed from its bond at any time, causing it to disappear.

Zone of Truth2nd-level enchantment
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 60 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: 10 minutes

You create a magical zone that guards against deception in a 15-foot-radius sphere centered on a point of your choice within range. Until the spell ends, a creature that enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or starts its turn there must make a Charisma saving throw. On a failed save, a creature can't speak a deliberate lie while in the radius. You know whether each creature succeeds or fails on its saving throw.

An affected creature is aware of the spell and can thus avoid answering questions to which it would normally respond with a lie. Such creatures can be evasive in its answers as long as it remains within the boundaries of the truth.

Prayer of Healing2nd-level evocation

Casting Time: 10 minutes

Range: 30 feet

Components: V

Duration: Instantaneous

Up to six creatures of your choice that you can see within range each regain hit points equal to 2d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the healing increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 2nd.

Alundair - Holy Avenger Rapier
Weapon (rapier), legendary (requires attunement by a Paladin)

You gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this magic weapon. When you hit a fiend or an undead with it, that creature takes an extra 2d10 radiant damage.

While you hold the drawn sword, it creates an aura in a 10-foot radius around you. You and all creatures friendly to you in the aura have advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects. If you have 17 or more levels in the paladin class, the radius of the aura increases to 30 feet.

Proficiency with a rapier allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

Mithral PlateMithral is a light, flexible metal. If the armor normally imposes disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks or has a Strength requirement, the mithral version of the armor doesn't.

Plate consists of shaped, interlocking metal plates to cover the entire body. A suit of plate includes gauntlets, heavy leather boots, a visored helmet, and thick layers of padding underneath the armor. Buckles and straps distribute the weight over the body.

Hearing Callie's surprise and given the topic raised about his missing brother, Aurelia holds back her words for a minute... letting Callie ask the location of her brother and any other details she wishes... and hopefully getting an answer before she proceeds. If Callie wishes to leave to find her brother she'll give her an approving nod... even if given the current situation Aurelia feels like sticking close may for the best.

Once that is dealt with however "Perhaps the public toilets would have been a kinder fate to this temple. Nothing wrong with such facilities... my Lady was of the common folk. She was no fussy lady of pretense or high society, she was great without having to pretend not to have need for daily if unpleasant necessities. If a village like those of her origins had need for such for the health and comfort of her folk she would have been helping the men dig the trenches. Nor do I have anything against a dance hall... Well, that's a lie. The music is atrocious given the purpose it is put to... the girl playing the lute is trying her best, bless her heart, but there's only so much she can do holding it all together on her own. I'd love to see if she can perform differently on another stage... but alas, that's out of the topic at hand..."

"Marstly... do you have something against the Martyred Radiance? Or is this just business for you and you're doing your best for someone who does?" asks the Abbess in a conversational tone, as if talking about the weather "Pardon me for saying it, but you don't strike me as a very merry man. You mention convincing the priest to leave and your idea to convert the empty temple into a dance hall as entirely unrelated... yet, the name is too much, don't you think? One may think there is some intent behind that... and that perceived intent is what sours the place to me. Even I get that sixty years is a long time for most folk... I have seen what sixty years do to people precious to me over and over again. But... it is not that long a time. I left this town sixty years ago with a clergy in place, business in order and a troublesome fey run out of town to the satisfaction of the people here. Our Faith has been in the decline... but people said their prayers and our priests still educated the children of town, took care of the sick. It was a small temple on a small community... but all the moreso, I don't believe the people of a little humble town would look kindly upon blaspheming their own parent's faith, the memory of the priest who helped raise them... not without a little help... a little intent helping things along"

Calar

"A pilgrimage, that does sound familiar. Yes, I believe I remember back when your faith was more popular that many went on such a journey." She... remembers? If there were many people, that would, depending on one's definition of 'many' be at least two-hundred, if not several centuries ago. If so, she looks immaculate for her age.

"It is my nature to be, as you put it, exceptional. We nymphs are meant to reflect what the world finds beautiful, graceful, intriguing. I have looked different over the years, slowly adapting to what dreams and desires want of me." Calar has heard of nymphs, the sort that are rife in the tales of legendary heroes as helpers, lovers, or simply memorable stops along a longer journey. "The world beckons me to leave the remote glades and springs, and join this movement as mortals develop more innovations in a year than they have in a human generation in the past. Why, I only recently discovered what 'innovation' even meant. I come to Arbormast because I must. I suppose it need not be this town, but it is quite friendly and accommodating to me."

She appears sincere in her words, though it is a strange thing to contemplate that someone has to live in a town because dreams demand it.

"It is a pity that so many no longer see the worth of Her or Her faithful. This land is better off for you, and at least in my eyes, you shine young Calar."

Aurelia and Callie

spacer.png

Marstly appears unphased, keeping an even keel. "Well, I'll have to check in and see what he's up to this evening. It wouldn't do to have you go on a wild goose chase all over town. And I try to be a generous employer. Sit here for a bit, and I'll send for him, give him the rest of the night off." He motions over to the waitress and without even whispering tells her. "Have someone find Corrin the Shadow, and tell him he's some business to attend to here. Tell him I'm sending for him."

He turns to listen to Aurelia.

"Funny thing is Abbess, it seems to good people of the town seem to accept Arbormast as it is. You certainly are right, I am not a merry man. Like you, I wish the world was a bit different, wish people were different. People are very clever in the present and very ignorant about the past. The future too if we're being honest with each other. But let's focus on the past. You seem to expect a lot from a town who lives for the day, who busts their backs all day and finds some joy at night, to remember things a month ago, let alone a decade. I can respect that you remember though. I can guarantee he does too. As I said, I've heard tale of you, and I know the troublesome Fey you speak. I can only imagine he's heard of your arrival. I find myself at something of an impasse. On one hand I'm not one to stand in front of another person's vendetta. On the other hand, I don't need violence across town. Bad for business, and yes, it is all a matter of business. So what do you recommend? What should I do about a Quickling who's likely on his way here?"

Her words strike a chord with the young priest. He wonders aloud, "You remember? Wow, it's an honor to be in the presence of someone who had witnessed better days of my faith. As I'm sure you already know, the pilgrimage is much more...modest than in the past. It saddens me to watch it fade, but I still pray there's something I can do about it."

As the Beloved explains her presence in Arbormast, Calar listens. She doesn't tell him much, but she tells him enough. As a keeper of the peace, it is often his job to find common ground between two groups...and he thinks he just found it. With a broad smile, the cleric says, "So your plight is the same as mine. Like those faithful to the Martyred Radiance, you were stuck in the past, unable to keep up with what's happening in the world. But I believe my fellow pilgrims and I can learn something from you. You didn't just sit back and demand things stay the way they were; you went out to understand and, perhaps, to change. I believe her faithful need to do much of the same. Even some of my companions are very set in their ways, but we need to preach less, listen more, and maybe there is still a place among the people for one who is so hard-working and vigilant."

He listens to the final words of the nymph and blushes, adding, "You humble me with your kindness. I hope to one day live up to what you see in your eyes. And perhaps I will with new friends like you."

Calar pauses and then asks, "So what have you learned about 'innovation' since you left the glade? Or perhaps what you have learned not from innovation, but from your past. You saw the spark of the past of the...previous pilgrimages; maybe we can recapture that spark again."

Argus, in brass-plated armor and holding his glaive.Visions of endless distractions, of lives of dissipation... of casual acquaintanceship and couplings... lives so different from his own stolidly predictable life... these dance through Argus's head as he hears his two more worldly companions discuss the allure of the fey. And yet, he saw for himself the muscular lumberjacks, returning to the village sweaty after what he can only imagine was an honest day's labor... what keeps them going? Four or five drinks like this one, and Argus would not be wakening and working the next morning... how do the folks of Arbormast do it?

"So you embraced lycanthropy? Is that a popular choice around here? Are there folks recruiting? How do you handle the full moons?" He asks his old friend frankly, but tries not to inject judgment into his voice.

You might issue a command other than one described here. If you do so, the DM determines how the target behaves. If the target can't follow your command, the spell ends. Approach. Abilities and Features

Divine SenseThe presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears.

When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.

Lay on HandsYour blessed touch can heal wounds.

Channel Divinity

Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects.

Channel Divinity: Harness Divine Power

3rd-level paladin optional feature

You can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to fuel your spells.

Breaking Your Oath

A paladin tries to hold to the highest standards of conduct, but even the most virtuous paladin is fallible.

Tenets of Devotion

Though the exact words and strictures of the Oath of Devotion vary, paladins of this oath share these tenets.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.
Oath of Devotion SpellsPaladin Level Spells
3rd protection from evil and good, sanctuary
5th lesser restoration, zone of truth
9th beacon of hope, dispel magic
13th freedom of movement, guardian of faith
17th commune, flame strike

Channel Divinity - Sacred WeaponAs an action, you can imbue one weapon that you are holding with positive energy, using your Channel Divinity.

If you are no longer holding or carrying this weapon, or if you fall unconscious, this effect ends.

Channel Divinity - Turn the UnholyAs an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring fiends and undead, using your Channel Divinity.

"You know what you can do? Change the name of the hall. Give me your word on that and then I'll leave so the Quickling won't find me in your establishment when he rushes to make trouble. Otherwise, might as well be in the hall when it comes time to revisit our last dance. There's a lot more I want to ask and say to you, but it might be wasted on someone so cynical to make his community's memory worse when you feel such disdain for it" says Aurelia... indeed, she has a lot more she wants to talk about... but if she can secure the name of the hall before the possibility of a fight starts when the Quickling gets to her...

It is not a guarantee that a fight will break, but the man clearly seems worried about the possibility.

Callie was already most of the way out of her stool when Marstly told her to stay, and paused there for a long while before settling back into the seat, taking long glances at the door. Truth be told, she'd rather be on a wild goose chase across town looking for him—it just didn't feel right to be sitting here idly waiting. Also, the Shadow? What in blazes had he been getting himself up to?

Callie gives Marstly a quick "thanks," for calling for her brother, but she struggles to pay attention to the rest of the conversation. Her leg bounces restlessly, one hand fiddles with her knife, and her gaze is on the door more than on Marstly and the Abbess. Still, she's glad that the Abbess has cut to what she considers the heart of the issue, the name of the hall, and she nods emphatically at that. As for the Quickling... perhaps it was good that she was waiting for Corrin here at the Abbess; side, and not running off through town. And she was already watching the door...

Calar

spacer.png

The play begins, it is Horace the Lucky Goat. It's a raunchy tale of a goat who, through unlikely series of events, ends up defeating bandits, corrupt officials, even a dragon before being married to the princess and made king. If Calar hasn't seen it before, he's at least heard of it. It's a not so subtle jab at the nobility. Playing Horace is, amusingly enough, a Satyr who no doubt is easier to make look the part.

"Ah, chewing grass and whatever garbage lands in front of me. That's the life for me!" He picks up a pair of pants and pretends to chew on them and the audience begins to laugh.

"Hm... what have I learned of innovation, and of your faith's past spark. I suppose I find innovation quite frightening. It is like a new form of magic has been invented, one that many more people can wield. A powerful wizard or druid can shake the very land to its foundations, but such are rare events. I fear that mortals are getting so much power in their palms that soon enough it'll be like having thousands of archmages running around. Still, the luxuries are nice." She gives her answer politely and honestly, not showing any fear on her face, but being genuine about her thoughts. "To the past, I think people lost their inspiration. There was once a time where the message of your faith felt fresh, relevant, was what the people needed to hear. Times change, their needs and wants change. So too their priority. As I said, I have evolved over time to remain beautiful as what it considered beautiful changes. So too does faith I think. Be beautiful. Be what faith is now and do it well."

Ah, me goat and me pants yet again! Off to the woods with ye as the bandits there will no doubt hunt, cook, and eat ye!" An actor jumps up and down in hysterics.

"Why the Martyred Radiance for you? There are other causes, other ways to do good in the world. Why such a difficult path?"

Argus

spacer.png

"Common? Ha! Of course not. Wouldn't be much of a town left. Eh, there's a few around. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Fortunate it was a werebear too. Same anger, but a better history, one protecting the woods and whatnot. So yes, to relive the old days, to join a history of nature defenders, to be more than an aging, retire buffoon I suppose I've embraced it. Full moon just means to sit in a silver cage, or go run off a couple days into the wilderness."

He gives Argus an appraising look to figure out if Argus is considering it himself. Either way, he shrugs. "No one with half a brain would recruit, but you can always find someone and ask. Wouldn't think you need it, seem like you have a kick in your step. Then again, could be a Sentinel with bestial senses and strength, eh?" If there was any thought that he was trying to convince Argus it disappears when he changed the subject. "Come on, we can hit the cheap tables and keep the fun times rolling. I know just the place."

Aurelia and Callie

spacer.png

"A man needs a reputation to keep in business, and you give me a poor trade. Truthfully, I don't really care what we call the place, but I'll have to charge you more than just a promise not to cause a disturbance. After all, a lot of people want favors, and a lot of people can claim to get into a fight if they don't get what they want. You'll have to give me something that a dozen other people can't just walk in and offer the same."

The message is clear, he has little intention of showing any sign of weakness, but can be bribed or persuaded for the right price.

"And Callie, please do work with your friend. It will be a much more complicated reunion if I have to ask your brother to keep the peace because a fight's broken out." It falls just short of a threat, but it is at the cusp of it. It's likely true though that if Aurelia gets in a fight, Marstly will have every reason to call his hired hands to deal with it.

Calar laughs at the foolish satyr in the play. He comments, "He's very good. Although I know the story, I have never seen it performed. I like plays because I feel like it's a way for them to tell me how THEY read the story and now want to tell it to me in their own words. And you can learn something from that about them and yourself."

After listening to the Beloved describe her take on innovation, he can't help but smile. He says, "You are much like those in the Martyred Radiance, so fearful of change. I do get it though; why can't things be the way they've always been? Unfortunately, I think that's been a big part of why She isn't as popular as She once was. It's like...we stopped trying and just hoped things would stay the same. It's cool though that people want to be better, so things change. And you can change with it or be left behind. I think Martyred Radiance decided to be left behind...but you made a good choice to learn and decide. It was very wise of you. I'm envious of your courage. You are a brave woman."

Calar furrows his brow as he thinks on the Beloved's questions. She is exceptionally observant and asks good questions.. He wishes he has her ability to carry a conversation like she does, but most of the cleric's experience has been from doing things wrong and not doing them wrong twice! After a few moments of thought, he says, "It wasn't like it was a choice. My caretaker when I was really young was faithful and I spent most of my days working hard on a farm. So hard work was second nature. After he died, I grew up a ward of the temple and was eventually called to the priesthood. Compared to the farm, chores in the temple were nothing! I wasn't afraid of hard work though, and maybe I'm a little stubborn and set my own ways. Plus, I was someone they could send to settle arguments; I'm not much for starting a fight but I'm happy to end them...hopefully with words. I liked making those happy endings happen; it's kind of how I am. And just 'cause the path is hard, it doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile. I mean, I often question if the path is the BEST one...the one where you can do the most good. But it doesn't do you any good to live your life second-guessing your choices."

He shrugs and turns his attention to the play for a few moments and then says, "You are very generous with your time; I enjoy spending time with you."

The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends. Abilities and Features

Divine SenseThe presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears.

When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.

Lay on HandsYour blessed touch can heal wounds.

Channel Divinity

Your oath allows you to channel divine energy to fuel magical effects.

Channel Divinity: Harness Divine Power

3rd-level paladin optional feature

You can expend a use of your Channel Divinity to fuel your spells.

Breaking Your Oath

A paladin tries to hold to the highest standards of conduct, but even the most virtuous paladin is fallible.

Tenets of Devotion

Though the exact words and strictures of the Oath of Devotion vary, paladins of this oath share these tenets.

Oath Spells

You gain oath spells at the paladin levels listed.
Oath of Devotion SpellsPaladin Level Spells
3rd protection from evil and good, sanctuary
5th lesser restoration, zone of truth
9th beacon of hope, dispel magic
13th freedom of movement, guardian of faith
17th commune, flame strike

Channel Divinity - Sacred WeaponAs an action, you can imbue one weapon that you are holding with positive energy, using your Channel Divinity.

If you are no longer holding or carrying this weapon, or if you fall unconscious, this effect ends.

Channel Divinity - Turn the UnholyAs an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring fiends and undead, using your Channel Divinity.

You and your adventuring companions can expect to receive free healing and care at a temple, shrine, or other established presence of your faith, though you must provide any material components needed for spells. Those who share your religion will support you (but only you) at a modest lifestyle.

Up to six creatures of your choice that you can see within range each regain hit points equal to 2d8 + your spellcasting ability modifier. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.

At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd level or higher, the healing increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 2nd.

Aurelia lets a frustrated, disappointed sigh as she hears the retort of the man, shaking her head "A poor trade? My, how greedy. You clearly don't understand how generous I am being. I was giving you the opportunity to correct the mistake of insulting our Goddess and possibly wash your hands of the efforts to subvert our faith in this town. I am not going to negotiate and barter the right price of you not blaspheming the woman who gave her life for the peace you now take for granted. Not because we don't have anything to offer, but because there's no discussion to be had on these grounds" says Knight Commander of the Faith. She wanted to mention for contrast just how some other Faiths may act in similar circumstances. To find their temple desecrated and the name making a mockery of their prime deity? Fist flying at the face of the man responsible would not be a story to raise any eyebrows. Attacks and arson in such circumstances are stories told over and over again. In that regard, the man has chosen wisely the target of his mockery. She doesn't want to mention such comparisons as it could be considered a threat and she's not going to let the man interpret her words in the worst way possible.

With that, the elven woman stands up from her seat "Worry not about the trouble. I'll be leaving now" while it had been amusing for a moment to imagine defending herself in such a place and making trouble for Marstly in that way, it wasn't the way to go. The other patrons could indeed get involved... she must not put the safety of innocents below matters of pride and respect. There is nothing more to be done here... basic respect to her faith is not something to be negotiated. She's not going to buy a name change and neither is she going to beg or plead to convince the man of the error of his ways. Her blade is cast and sworn to defend the innocent, to slay demons, to chase away darkness and evil. As disagreeable as she finds the man as Knight Commander she's not going to fight him for his insult. As Aurelia she may be willing to punch the man if she was out of office and he was not helpless and unwilling to the scrap... but that's an entirely different matter.

However... someone remains who may have business here "Callie, you're dismissed from duties for the night. The man already said he'll fetch your brother, keep him to his word. Don't let him swindle you for more. I'd advice not relying on him but do what you must" she says, putting a hand to the halfling's shoulder... giving her a light reassuring squeeze. As oblivious as she may be... Aurelia knows how important the matter is to Callie... how important family may be. The girl was distracted since the matter came to light. Plus, she trusts the girl to be capable of looking after herself and having good judgement. At the very least she should be able to make her way to Aurelia or the others if she finds something she can't deal with on her own.

"A freebie for a man looking just for bargains. Tell your entertainer not to rest on her laurels, complacent with her performing tricks, just because her usual audience can't tell where one note ends and the other begins. She's too good to be left satisfied with this level of performance" says Aurelia as she lets her keen performer ears to listen for one extra second at the lady on stage using her magic to play extra instruments. With that said... unless Marstly calls her back saying he'll change the name... she walks out of the dance hall, to the face the night of this town. She's not aware of anything wrong with the liquor of town and while she may suspect that Marsley is part of some conspiracy that drove the Faith out she has no evidence of anything truly nefarious afoot. For all she knows currently, this is just another unpleasant turn of the world.

According to Marstly the Quickling she confronted in the past seems to be bent on revenge for his earlier humiliation... but while that's something to consider, the Knight Abbess is not intending to do anything about it. If he wants to come for round two, he's welcome to it. If he wants to gloat about what the town has become, well he sure can have a laugh at her. He's the least of her problems... or at least, at this point, Aurelia thinks so. Looking up through the canopy of Arbormast at the starry sky the elven woman feels a little melancholic... but a nice, deep breath of cold air helps her rise up her determination. What better way for a zealot like her to perk up than with some worship? She begins to march away from the Temple made dance hall... looking for a good spot in the outdoors... somewhere she won't bother people but where she can be heard. Current Arbormast hasn't made her feel like they deserve it, but she'll see if she can give them a good concert for a change nonetheless.

"Ah, to the cheap tables," Barris says, raising his mug in a semi-salute. The sturdy mug is already empty, and Barris lets out a stifled burp, patting his chest and making a face as something clearly feels like it catches wrong behind his breastbone. "Urf. That does have quite a punch to it." He takes a few deep breaths, concentrating on his breathing, and still looks a little green by the end of it, though he perks back up quickly enough. "Now, there was talk of changing venues? Perhaps to the dance hall? Do you suppose we might convince the Abbess to join us for a mug and tales of times gone by? The things I would do to record her story."

In the midst of his unsteady musings, Barris burps again, then frowns, patting his chest a little harder. "Actually, perhaps I might request a hold on that... I think I would prefer to stay sitting right now."
