A 5th Edition Adventure Path

image.png.7806128aeb06ecbbbfcbf0c98f946ee7.pngimage.png.9bea45789d6fcc698488907f8213c758.png

The land rush is on! Sent south by Brevoy, the heroes have the unenviable task of venturing into the infamous Stolen Lands and annexing the territory, facing down monsters, bandits, and worse. It's hard enough to conquer territory—but does a ragtag band of adventurers have what it takes to found and defend a burgeoning kingdom from the terrors of the wild?

The Kingmaker Adventure Path takes the heroes from encounters with mysterious bandit lords and barbaric raiders through the trials and tribulations of developing and defending their new settlement in the notoriously lawless River Kingdoms. Yet when war comes to the Stolen Lands in earnest, it's up the heroes to take up a mystical blade and stand tall against the horrors of man, beast, and strange creatures more dangerous than either...

Into The Stolen Lands

For generations, the Stolen Lands have spanned the southern border of Brevoy. Many attempts have been made to settle them, but to date, none have succeeded, making these 35,000 square miles of wilderness the largest swath of unclaimed land in the entire River Kingdoms. As tensions mount in Brevoy, one of Rostland’s swordlords hopes to change that fact; she plans to issue charters to several groups of adventurers, sending them south into the Stolen Lands to reopen old trade routes and defeat the bandits and monsters who have made them too dangerous to use. By sending free agents south, this swordlord of Rostland hopes to create new allies without sacrificing her own position of power in Brevoy.

Yet as with most complex and brilliant plans, the future holds plenty of opportunities for disaster.

What will your future hold?

This now becomes your story....

Introduction (The Basics)

Rules System: D&D 5e
Theme: High Fantasy Epic, War, Saga, Politics
Starting Level: 1st

“The unreal is more powerful than the real. Because nothing is as perfect as you can imagine it. Because it’s only intangibles, ideas, concepts, beliefs, fantasies that last. Stone crumbles. Wood rots. People, well, they die. But things as fragile as a thought, a dream, a legend, they can go on and on.”
–Chuck Palahniuk

Welcome friends to Kingmaker. This is an AP original designed by Paizo for the Pathfinder RPG but has been converted to be compatible with the 5th edition D&D ruleset. Kingmaker is a high fantasy campaign saga that thrusts the player characters into a unique situation of building their own kingdom and carving out their own niche upon the world.

Before we get into the details of the campaign, I would like to lay out my expectations. Here is what I envision from my players: I am looking for characters with reasons to have a desire to go into hostile territory and work as a team to build a kingdom, good or evil doesn't matter but chaos doesn't work within the group. So, no chaotic alignment will be allowed. This is not the campaign for chaotic evil players looking to betray the other players, loners or free-spirited vagabonds. Those campaigns exist elsewhere and if they are what you are looking for, perhaps you are in the wrong place. This is a campaign about being part of an adventuring group that is bound for great things, and maybe one day, one of you will be able to ssit on the throne of the kingdom you have built. This is what I expect. That said, while you are morally neutral, what I am not looking for is a bunch of murderous-lawless types looking to indulge dark fantasies. I am looking for characters with interesting backstories, who would mesh well together. Characters should be three-dimensional with personality, desires, and flaws. Disagreement between characters should be a natural occurrence based on strongly-held beliefs and philosophies, although they shouldn't derail the game. Knowledge of the Golarion setting of Pathfinder is assumed and should be worked into the character if at all possible. That include deity selection, etc. If you are not familiar with the setting, most information is available online at Golarion - PathfinderWiki and the Library tab for this game has the immediate relative information for this campaign in the Where on Golarion? thread.

Mechanically, this will be standard point-buy with 27 points. I strongly disfavor stat dumps, especially Charisma, without appropriate story justification. I also disfavor gimmicky characters. There is a Character Creation tab that lets you know all the relevant information for building a character for the Kingmaker adventure path.

The posting rate for this game will be an average of three times per week if not more. Some days there will be more posts than others, but this campaign will be run at a leisurely pace. If you do not post once within 48 hours during combat, actions will be taken for you (usually the dodge or assist action). I reserve the right to eject from the campaign anyone who has not posted in a week without prior warning of absence.

I expect players to engross themselves in the roleplaying element and contribute interestingly to the story.

I also travel occasionally, but this rarely affects my posting. I will be taking applications until 02/04/23. I have not decided how many players I will be taking, but the total will be between 4 and 6, depending on the exact needs of the party. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them in the Application Question and Answer thread.

Character Building

What rulebooks should I use?
You can use non-optional rules found in the Player’s Handbook, the Basic Rules, and all the books listed below. If a rule has been reprinted in a newer resource, you must always use the latest printing.

• Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons (FTD)
• Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse (MPMM)
• Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything (TCE)
• Xanathar’s Guide to Everything (XGE)

You may also use the rules found in the following digital publications:

• Elemental Evil Player’s Companion (EEPC)
• Locathah Rising (LR)

Additionally, the following variant or optional rules are available:

• Chapter 6: Customization Options (PH)
• Customizing Your Origin (TCE)
• Optional Class Features (TCE)
• Variant Human Traits (PHB)

(Absolutely no flying races will be allowed)

You need to read all threads in the Character Creation tab before building a character to better understand things about the adventure path that you may want to take into consideration before starting to build a character.

Alignment Requirement: No chaotic.

Starting Equipment: You will start with the basic equipment given to you by your class and background. If you haven't yet read the material in the Character Creation tab, then please do so now as there are custom backgrounds for this campaign that you might want to use. Really, there is.

Ability Scores: Ability scores can be generated using the 27 point buy as featured in the PHB.

Hit Points: Maximum at 1st level, average each additional level.

Backgrounds: Any from the source books listed above or any from the material in the Character Creation tab. Customizing backgrounds is allowed but must be approved by the DM, same with any player built custom backgrounds.

Applications to the Game

Character Submissions: I have included a character thread template in the Library tab if you would like to use it (it is not mandatory). You will also need to start a thread in the Applications tab for your submission. If you have any questions about my rules for character building, any thoughts about character backgrounds, or to request that I review your character then you can do so in the Application Question and Answer thread.

All applications should include (at a minimum)..

Name: (E’erybody’s got one. Your character should too. Last names are not a requirement.)

Character Portrait: (Need a visual representation of your character.)

Race: (Race)

Character Class: (All characters start at level 1)

Ability Scores: (27 point buy.)

Character Sheet: (Link to your Myth-Weaver's character sheet from your character portrait or name.) You don't have to do this if you plan to keep your character thread up to date and have all the relative information in your application thread.

Description/Personality: (Feel free to describe your character (physically) in any terms you wish. When describing your character’s personality, consider the following questions: How do others view you in social interactions? How optimistic is your character? How trusting? How assertive are you when it comes to making major decisions? How conscientious are you about following rules? How empathetic are you? How courageous are you in dire straits? How do you feel when faced by setbacks? How are your nerves?)

Write a basic background for the character: If you’re having trouble - make a checklist first. What was their childhood like? Adolescence? How wealthy were their parents (or guardians), and how were they treated? How long ago did they become an adult (if they have)? What have they done to try and start a career as an adult (if anything)? etc., etc.

Technical Stuff

Application Deadline: FEBRUARY 4th, 2023 midnight CST

Post Requirements: Minimum posting rate of three times per week (If not more)

Party Size: Looking for 4-6 players.

Other Requirements:

  • I want players who give detailed and interesting posts. Not one-liners and blocks of speech text. The rule of three applies here. What is your character thinking, doing and saying.
  • Expect your actions to have consequences. Don't be stupid. Play smart. If I give you lots of hints that opening the box will unleash fiery death. Don't open the box and expect to live.
  • I'm a story teller, the rule of cool applies. If it's cool, cinematic and epic, screw the rules- I'll probably allow it. If this grates against your rules lawyer soul...we are not meant to play together.
  • Unless I tell you otherwise...assume you can play with the scenery to help craft the story.

Questions/Clarifications:

Can I play if I've played part of the Adventure, but not all of it?
I think so long as you haven't been past the first couple of scenes, we'll call it good.

Can I submit more than one character?
No. I'm going to go ahead and limit it to one character submission per person. That being said, feel free to change your character concept as much as you want between now and the close date!

Final DM Note

I know the above is a very, very lengthy process to go through to apply for a online pbp game. I also know that some of you will be turned off by it. Some of you will cringe, but others will pour their heart and soul into their character and create something absolutely beautiful. When I have used this process before in the past it has given me the best roleplayers I have ever seen in a game and also the most committed group of players that are still going strong after multiple years of play. If you are looking for a quick game of fun and just want to slash up some bad guys and do your thing, then this campaign is not for you. If you are looking for more.... then look no further than "Kingmaker".

Please do not hesitate to PM me, call me out on something, disagree with me, ask questions, bite your thumb at me, or anything else you need to do for me to get your application. I don't bite.
