At the very best, it’s likely a wild exaggeration. It is said that the book contains the destinies of all things, and that one might write their own fate into it should they acquire it. The paradox, of course, being that if you believe such a thing is possible then it would already be written in the book to begin with. I have no idea why her mother would be searching for such a thing, and I thought it best to bring it up privately given that I don’t have the same relationship with her as the rest of you.”
  2. Hjallmyr starts making rubbings of the coins, and rough sketches of the rest of the loot. He labels each one with a brief description, along with the date and location they were found. “Fascinating. This currency hasn’t been used in about a hundred years. I wonder where he got it from. He called himself Clanbreaker, so perhaps he has been hunting in these lands for that long. But then why hasn’t he spent it in all that time…” He continued to mutter to himself as he perused the rest of the items. He snaps out of his focused trance for just a moment to identify the magic items. “Ah yes. Some of these are magic items. Wand of magic missiles, onyx dog, portable hole. Useful to be sure, but nothing of note from a historic perspective.”
  3. Hjallmyr takes a moment to catch his breath now that the fire was under control. All in all, that had gone much smoother than he expected. He tries to ignore the sounds of Niko devouring Indominus as best he can, and makes his way over to the loot pile. He quickly looks over the items for anything of historical significance, and scans for anything magical. “Good job, everyone. It is always a pleasure to work with efficient allies. Should we rest here while I identify the magical items, or would you like to do that back in town?”

He rushes over to the nearest flames and starts neutralizing them little by little with prestidigitation. “Water is not my specialty, but I can still snuff the flames out. Start at the outer edges of the blaze down wind to keep it from spreading, and work your way inward if you’re going to help. We need to contain it before the wind takes it too much.”

He’s so startled, he barely notices the terrifying new form of Indominus on the hill. Aaliyah also had a look in her eye for a moment that didn’t leave him wanting to take cover behind her anymore. He summoned a flaming sphere next to Indominus, rammed him with it, then rode the current of wild magic around him to the top of the nearby ridge. He made a mental note to ask Aaliyah about what had happened to her later, when she was less murderous looking. (OOC: Flaming sphere deals 5 damage to Indominus. DC 16 dexterity save for half.)
  7. Hjallmyr rolls to resist fear. He fails and uses his inspiration to reroll. Still fails. He uses a lucky die and succeeds.

"Excuse me, I just need to get a little closer so I can... ah, there they are." He points a finger, firing off another fireball at the pack of minions. (OOC: On roll20 I can get the four werewolves with a red circle on them as well as the southern most one with the slow icon. 32 damage, DC 16 dex save for half.)

He shoots a firebolt at Indominus through his awakened spellbook in order to stop any regeneration.

He then waves his hand over his spellbook, and a spectral tome emerges from it. The ghostly book overs next to Hjallmyr, emitting dim light. He was closer to the leader than he wanted to be, but he also didn't want to get separated from his allies. He could still misty step away if they tried to come at him, after all. Ho only hoped that he could thin their numbers before the rest of the group was overwhelmed. (OOC: Hjallmyr casts fireball for 31 damage, DC 16 reflex for half, and summons his Awakened Spellbook)
  11. “Whatever we are going to do, it would be prudent to do it quickly. Perhaps those of you who are more stealthy can sneak closer. Or, I can just start throwing fire now. The element of surprise will not be ours for long, I don’t think.”
  12. Hjallmyr silently wondered why his new allies were wasting time extorting the locals when their friend had just run off on her own to fight the werewolves. He didn’t particularly care for the payout— Moonforge was plenty generous with its wages— but he also didn’t fancy a confrontation with a bunch of experienced fighters loaded up with magic equipment, so he chose to keep his thoughts to himself and pretend to be engrossed in his spell book until everyone was ready to leave.
  13. Hjallmyr buys 3 healing potions before they leave.
  14. “Since I have time to prepare my spells, I can fully commit to combat magic. Their regeneration shouldn’t be a problem, as I still have multiple castings of fireball and flaming sphere available. If all else fails, I can also use firebolt. I can also counterspell and dispel magic if there are enemy spell casters, but that will mean less fireballs. I will also need protection. I can cast mage armor and shield myself in an emergency, but even then I doubt I can take many hits. I would also like to add that I do not think it is wise to simply ask them to leave. There will be a frenzy in a couple days regardless of where they are, so if they leave then we are just pushing the problem onto someone else. We need to stop their leader.”
  15. Aaliyah continued to leave Hjallmyr speechless. Was that a sending stone in the shape of a seashell? Best not to dwell on the specifics of whatever was going on there. “He’s responded. I’ll write out the message so we can all examine it.” He wrote out Tel’s response beneath his message, this time in a deep green ink. Kirit was right. The odds of this being resolved peacefully were looking pretty dismal. He had no idea why they’d be re-biting each other, but he was sure it wasn’t good. “Does anyone know who this ‘Howling Knight’ is. Perhaps we can play on his desire to be the alpha with a challenge of our own. If we can convince him to fight us on even terms for control of the pack, then we may not have to worry about fighting all of them. He may not be able to turn down a direct challenge in front of everyone. It will still be a risky gamble, however.”
  16. “I’m worried if we ask too many questions he won’t have enough words to respond. However, you know him better than I do, so if you think he can manage it then we can try.” Hjallmyr wrote out Murdain’s version of the message beneath the first, adding some words of his own. Help coming. Your jailers’ intents and motives? Why kidnap you? Be reasoned with? True werewolves? Have holy symbol? Best time to attack? 25 words. “There. Any other suggestions?”
  17. “Perfect. Now, our words are limited, so let’s decide on what to say before I cast the spell.” Hjallmyr pulls a sheet of paper from his bag, then with a flick of his wrist a quill appears in his hand. He does not dip it in ink, but as he touches it to the paper, silvery words appear on the page. Friends coming to help. Need information on bandits and their intentions. Why do they need you? Can be reasoned with? 25 word response maximum. “How does this look to everyone?”
  18. “Ah, I’ve just had an idea. If you all could adequately describe this Tel person, I could prepare a sending and try to speak with him. The message would be 25 words or less on both ends, but we may be able to figure out more about these bandits’ intentions.”

They are unlikely to honor any agreement we make, if they even try to talk. Unfortunate as it is, eradication is the likely end no matter what option we choose. As for an ambush, if we could use the terrain to lure them into tight quarters where they will be forced to group up, fireballs will be just as effective as silver.”

We will probably end up fighting them one way or another. Is there a place we could lure them into a trap? I have spells for attacking several enemies at once.”

I have spells that may be able to help track the gentleman we are looking for, but I won’t be able to prepare them until tomorrow. I am fully prepared to fight, should we need to however. I will defer to your judgement, since I am still new to the group.”
  22. “This blade…” Hjallmyr ran his hand over his face, speechless. He pulled out a few loose sheets of paper and began to make rough sketches of the sword, annotating it with notes about what he had found in the study. Half way through, he realized that Kirit probably was waiting on an explanation. He took a moment to gather his thoughts, took a deep breath, then continued in a shakey, excited voice. “This is an amazing find! If I’m correct, this is a dwarven oathblade. They are exceedingly rare, and designed with a specific purpose— an oath— in mind. This particular one likely belonged to Galvan Stonebeard, and was made specifically to protect an empyrean, though I have no idea which one. How is it even possible for you to wield this without an empyrean to protect? You must give me every detail of how you obtained it. This sword alone is an unprecedented find! You are holding the sword of a legend Mr. Kirit!”

As such, I have knowledge of a diverse set of topics, as well as the ability to document, categorize, and analyze any new information we might find. I travel frequently, so I have a number of utility spells in my spell book to make traversing and surviving in any environment easier. I also have an array of offensive and defensive spells, purely for self defense of course. One can never be too careful.” He looked over the weapon on the table, trying to glean whatever he could. The others had begun to migrate toward the magic item shop, so he assumed the conversation would continue as they shopped. Unfortunately, he had gone through most of his funds getting this far, but it would be prudent to stock up on potions if he was going to join up with this group. (ooc: The j makes a y sound like in fjord, so his name is pronounced Hyal-meer)

If they weren't willing to tell him about this 'scholar', then they were more than likely either a private collector or something more nefarious. Either way, none of the materials they had given over would see the light of day any time soon. So much knowledge lost. Not to mention that he wouldn't have hardly anything to report on. It was time to start on damage control. "How about this. You folks need someone with knowledge of the creatures you're facing. I have experience traveling these lands, and a wealth of research at my disposal. You're also likely to come across more historical sites like the study. I'll offer my services to you, and in exchange you'll help me preserve what we can of the history of the Vale. I understand that you need funds, and might need to sell off much of what we find, but I ask that you at least let me document the things we find so it won't be completely lost." As much as he wanted to return to Moonforge where he didn't need to worry about risking his life, he also couldn't live with himself knowing this group of ruffians were running around destroying ruins and selling artifacts off to the highest bidder. Just then, an elven woman came through the door and made him immediately regret his decision. She was exactly the type of person he was worst with, as evidenced by his complete lack of ability to respond to her introduction. Was he actually supposed to sing? He'd never heard of any kind of custom regarding musical names in the Vale, but maybe it was a rural tradition... Either way, it seemed an inefficient way to address someone. Thankfully, an even more eccentric figure entered soon after, relieving him of the need to think on it further. A merchant, it would seem, and one with a powerful magic item. He had to admit he was intrigued at the inter-dimensional store, but it was far too intimidating to walk up to the man while everyone was watching. Perhaps he would try after someone else made the first move...
