    Specter wanted to find a magical way out of here, but for the time being, they needed to thin the ranks of these little creatures.  The Tiefling produced a dagger from under his jacket, readied it, and threw it at one of the blights, hopefully ending its existence.

    Specter decided that he needed to find ways to help out everyone else during this fight.  The spirits told him of an ancient tale of a long deceased warrior who used to walk the lands, righting wrongs, battling bullies, and then disappearing, off to another town, his life always one of change.  The Tiefling decided to bless Murdain with that old wisdom, and the dwarf immediately found himself faster, better able to defend himself, and much more hardy than before.

     

    Noting that the large wolf was also apparently an ally of some sort, Specter hummed an ancient, long forgotten requiem from the dwarven people, washing it all over the body of the direworlf.  The Beast felt a surge of musical inspiration.

    Specter felt very happy that he had made the right decision by running east.  Yes.  He had gone the way of least resistance, and here he would be very saf.....SOLA'S ARSE THERE WERE MORE OF THEM!!!

     

    "Let the record state that I wanted to stay at an inn!  Nature sucks sweaty donkey balls!  I hate the stirges, I hate the trees, I hate the..."

     

    Oh, and now the wolf was calling him 'horned one'.  Better than horny one.  Specter got that all the time, and yes, each person who said it laughed like the joke had never, ever been told before.

     

    Well, if the wolf DIDN'T want to kill him...

     

    Specter pointed at the creatures engaged with the large beast and hummed one long, discordant note that flew towards the mass of twigs and sent blue light washing all over them!

     

    The Tiefling produced a skull from his pack, a bizarre item that seemed to speak to Specter and allow him to channel his power.  Ancient, bleached by the sun, and with eyeless sockets staring back, it was a rather macabre sight for any observer.

     

    Specter named him Lenny.  And he asked Lenny to tell him a special tale of magic that he might later use to help someone else.

    Specter shook his head.  He had tried!  He always wanted to see if he could negotiate before things came to blows.  Of course, these creatures likely didn't understand anything he was saying.  Or doing.  Or...well, anything really.

     

    And to think that he had been so nice!

     

    The Tiefling was quick to retreat, not needing to be told twice after the fall back was announced.  Save the slashing for those that enjoyed it.  As Specter moved to a safer range, he sang a high pitched note, which, in addition to being epic and awesome, was a great way of poking fun at sticks.

     

    "Hey, Twig Boy?  Yeah you!  I've seen stronger blades of grass.  What do you DO, exactly, other than die like a punk?"

    Specter shrugged his shoulders and nodded.

     

    "Yeah, let's just head out on our way.  I don't really have much to offer to this mystery, other than the fact that it's terribly confusing.  That and I don't want to meet whichever nasty creature was able to do all of this."

     

    He wasn't sure if there was anything else to be done, so the Tiefling decided to move on with the others.

     

    Aaaaaaand...that's when the creepy vine people showed up.

     

    Specter gulped, unsure of who these people were or what they wanted, but he figured that if they weren't shooting arrows yet, there was always time to work this out with words.

     

    "Um, hello there.  My friends and I...were just looking over this mysterious place.  My name is Specter, and I assure you that  none of us mean you any harm.  Could you tell us who you are that we might know you better?"

    Specter shook his head as he surveyed the scene, and his brow furrowed as he looked at a grisly mess that didn't make a whole lot of sense.

     

    "The bloodstains are here, but there's NOTHING else.  No clothes, no bones, no drips...nothing.  Usually when someone is killed, you find some sort of evidence or clue.  But I've scoured this place and honest to gods, there's only this splatter.  I mean, for that to happen.."

     

    The Tiefling shook his head, scarcely able or willing to believe it.

     

    "Whoever was making that stew...would have just been annihilated.  Swallowed whole?  Incinerated?  Because that's the ONLY possible way that this could have happened without any evidence.  I mean, I've seen criminals cover their tracks before, but you can't just wash blood of the grass and trees outside.  Whatever did this...must be a powerful being indeed.  Man, do they have dragons in these parts?  I don't know what else could have roasted everything to a crisp and left nothing behind."

     

     

     

     

     

  7. Ok, so I'm learning the die tower here.  First roll should be a 14 as I forgot to add the 1.  Forget the second roll on the last one; I'm not sure why that appeared.

    Specter let out a low whistle as he chatted with the others, though he was quite happy that the dwarf wasn't ready to string up the Tiefling for being present near a bunch of ashes.  Specter hadn't exactly had the greatest luck with dwarves in the past.  Then again, this guy didn't seem to be a 'typical' dwarf.  In fact, he might actually look like someone willing to...break the law?  Nah, maybe bend it a bit.  Dwarves really hated it when you broke the law around them.

     

    Not that Specter had any experience with that...

     

    "Well, I'm no man of nature, but surely we can search around here and see if anything comes up.  Lemme study these clues and see if I can come up with something.  Also, name's Specter, pleasure to meet you, and thank you for not bringing out the torches and pitchforks."

    It was nights like these that Specter was happy that his great great grandmother fancied demonic suitors, because he didn't know WHAT anyone did if they couldn't see in the dark.

     

    Most of the time, 'twas a royal pain in the arse.  People usually spat at you as you walked by.  Kids yanked your tail, at least the ones whose mothers hadn't hidden them underneath her skirts until you passed by.  Drunks always picked a fight with you, and the ignorant folks with the torches and pitchforks often found ways to blame you for all their problems. 

     

    And that was a GOOD night.

     

    But anyway, seeing in the dark.  That was lovely.  Not that it changed much, since 'twas Specter's nose that was leading him and his new companion, who had NOT yet decided to set him on fire, to see what in blazes smelled so good.  Specter had a feeling that this group might want to roast him over the fire, too, but thankfully when you've spent your life this way, you learn to be rather good with words.  Specter could talk his way out of almost anything, and into more things than he cared to admit.  Most Tieflings didn't have his level of money or success, such as they were, and he didn't take it all for granted.

     

    Well, he somewhat did.  But not as much as you'd think.

     

    "Well, Barkvin, looks to me like someone has something lovely for dinner.  Let's see if they've any room for a pair of ruffians out on the cold, hard road.  I'm sure I can make us sound like dear sweet folks in search of sustenance for our noble and holy quest."

  12. Yeah, I'd kind of like to know our current makeup as well if that's OK.

     

    I've settled in on a bard.  I'm just trying to determine the subclass that best fits my concept right now.  I'm seriously looking into Inspiring Leader, because that's basically an extra level of HP for the entire party every short rest, and that feat has saved my butt several times in other games.  I'm still working out the rest, though.

     

    Where should we post the threads?  Or is there a secret way to do that on Baldr I don't know about?

    Steel Defender

    In combat, the defender shares your initiative count, but it takes its turn immediately after yours. It can move and use its reaction on its own, but the only action it takes on its turn is the Dodge action, unless you take a bonus action on your turn to command it to take another action. That action can be one in its stat block or some other action. If you are incapacitated, the defender can take any action of its choice, not just Dodge.

     

    If the Mending spell is cast on it, it regains 2d6 hit points. If it has died within the last hour, you can use your smith's tools as an action to revive it, provided you are within 5 feet of it and you expend a spell slot of 1st level or higher. The steel defender returns to life after 1 minute with all its hit points restored.

     

    At the end of a long rest, you can create a new steel defender if you have smith's tools with you. If you already have a defender from this feature, the first one immediately perishes. The defender also perishes if you die.

    Threestrings, Bard in Waterdeep "Could you please deliver this to a female half-drow named Cal'al Claddani, who runs a tavern called the Flagon and the Dragon in Skullport, on the third level? Cal'al provided shelter and healing to a wounded friend of mine and I kind of owe her for it. Once you deliver the pouch, your group will be able to take refuge in a in a place called Dalagor's Fortress, located on the uppermost level of Skullport. A dragonborn mage named Felrax guards the place."

     

    Esvele Rosznar, "my brother Kressando. He has gone down to Skullport to conduct secret meetings with the thief's guild there, for nefarious purposes I would assume. He is twenty-two years old and has fair skin, like mine, and real curly hair. Be wary though, he is highly trained in the art of stealth and thievery. He also wears a platinum signet ring bearing our family crest, a diving white falcon on a field of blue. The ring also bears an inscription 'Fly high and swoop swift'. House Rosznar to fulfil that debt. Skullport is connected to level 3 of Undermountain by the underground River Sargauth and by five meandering subterranean passageways: Beggar's Rest Pass, Shadow Pass, Steamfall Pass, Taglath's Gap, and Whisperhaunt Pass."

     Varta suddenly found her mouth moving, raspy words coming out as if they were part of a dream.

     

    "All hail nilbog, it's goblin spelled backwards!

    If I had my mind back, I'd call you all bastards

    But nilbog's so great, it's goblins spelled backwards!"

     

    Varta felt very strongly that she needed to impress the nilbog, so she suddenly grew another foot into a large creature as her Giants blood rushed through her veins.

     Varta didn't know what this poison was or if she could resist it somehow, but right now, there was someone in front of her, and that was really, really irking her.  Maybe she was going to hit it, and maybe she wasn't, but the Goliath was tired of waiting around.  Something was going to connect, or so she hoped!

     Varta gritted her teeth in preparation for the coming battle.  She couldn't resist the urge to bash her axe and shield together as an intimidation tactic as the Goliath moved south to engage the enemy.

     

    Thankfully her allies had done a good job of clearing out the field.  She was going to plug the gap and hack down the next set of enemies, or so she hoped.

    "All right, honey, you have fun watching my rear,"  called out Varta in her raspy alto, followed by a distinctive laugh.  "I'll have you know that I work very hard on it, doing lots of squats.  My people demand that we all look like stones.  Probably the ancestors had a statue fetish or something."

     

    The Goliath carefully made her way each and opened the first door that she saw, hoping to get a glimpse south and see where all the chanting was coming from.

     Varta pointed behind her, toward the hallway the group had just walked past.

     

    "I think we're better off checking this hallway out, first.  Those chanters want us dead and it's a long run down that hallway, likely through ranged weapon attacks.  Maybe if we take the corridor up here, we'll have a better chance of getting these punks in smashing range.  And those nilbog things are nasty; kill 'em first if possible so they don't make mincemeat of us all."

     

    Assuming that no one objected to her plan, Varta walked north and then east to explore the corridor the group had walked past.

      Varta's raspy voice answered, "Hells if I know.  But there's a door at the end of this hallway.  I want to move south a bit and see if there's anything that jumps out at us, literally, before I open the dang thing."

     

    The Goliath moved south a few squares and then immediately looked east, just to see what lay within the hallway before she kept moving.
