  1. This concept looks good! How did Quinn meet Old Man Eli? Hope is a dangerous thing. Is there someone who Quinn regrets lighting a match of hope for? Did hope burn too brightly for them? Did that spark of hope turn into a promise that Quinn couldn't keep? What's the name of one other person who works at the Crossroads? What's their relationship with Quinn?
  2. Hi , Elspeth looks interesting! Since it's been a while, I'm just checking in to see if you're still interested in playing in this campaign. If so, let me know if I can help you finish the last theme card. I also wanted to say that I see a potential issue with the power tags in Seize the Spotlight and Blatant Thievery being too broad. Typically each character is only permitted one broad power tag, because these are less specific to a character/situation, less colourful, more generally useful, and potentially overpowered. For example, "reality-warping", "irresistible charm", and "stolen powers" are extremely broadly useful, so I would ask you to pick one to keep as your broad tag, and then limit the others. There are two ways to make the tags more specific. The first is just to add more words to the tag, so that it only applies in certain situations. The other is to agree in advance that using the tag requires a Change the Game move, a Core Move that is used to create new tags. For example, when using stolen powers to copy another's powers, the player cannot add the tag directly to Elspeth's moves. Instead, I'll ask you to first make a Change the Game move (presumably to figure out/understand these powers in some depth before she can use them) to create the temporary tag "stolen power" and use it to power her other moves. Let me know what you think!
  3. I really like this concept (and Maple)! :) It's been a while so I wanted to check in and see if you're still interested in playing in the campaign. If so, I have a few questions and suggestions: 1. For Custodian of the Damned, it's not clear to me why Burning Sage would block or hinder Maple's abilities. Is it something related to the lore of Cerberus? Does it interfere with Maple's ability to smell others' sins? If there's no mythical or personal reason for this particular weakness, one suggestion would be to change it to something that complements her power tags. For instance, based on "I hear your beating hearts" and "I smell your sins", I suspect Maple might have difficulty sniffing out the sins of those who lack (or are able to control) physiological responses, such as someone whose heartrate remains steady when they lie, or who doesn't have a heartbeat to begin with, or who can control their bodily responses. Let me know what you think of this. 2. Similarly, for (B) and (C), I want to clarify: is it that Maple actually physically smells guilt? Is it that her divine senses are so strong that she doesn't need to see it to know? (But she's not actually able to see in the dark?) 3. Hound of Hell and Best in Show look great. No questions here. 4. The All Heads, No Tails Mission card seems intriguing! I especially like the tension between the power tag to leave her comfort zone and the weakness. Anyway, if you're still interested in playing, let me know. For the Q&A, that's something we can work out with the other players.
  4. Hey all--apologies for the wait. I was away for two weeks for a work trip and couldn't find time to check this thread. I'm back home now, and will be spending a few hours looking over people's threads and giving feedback. The ad is closed to new players to be fair to the ones who created a thread by the advertised due date. Thanks for your patience!
  5. Just a quick update that I'm a little busy with work this week, but aim to give detailed feedback by Friday. :)
  6. The Mythos concept, Seihdr, sounds like it could work as Divination or Expression. For example, this description: ...suggests Divination would be a good fit. Any Mythos concerned with discerning the workings of fate falls within the purview of Divination; but the idea of "working within [Fate's] structure to bring about change, [done] by symbolically weaving new events into being" feels very much like it could be aligned with the theme of Expression. One question you could ask yourself to flesh out this concept could be: Why did Freyja choose her?
  7. Hey , is Ira ready for the first round of feedback? If so, I'll add that tag to this thread!
  8. Oh, I love that: "Madness" infesting a system until it colonizes what it infests, and we habituate to it, and it becomes the new stable norm—until a new reactionary "madness" arises once more. And Jack being the personification of this force, deep within everyone... chef's kiss. I like that you can put a positive spin on the idea of chaos if the stable system has never served you. Re: character portraits, I think Pinterest's pretty useful because it helps me find portraits of a similar theme, so if I find one that's close but not quite right, I can usually find something a few tabs down. Yeah, there are so many intriguing concepts! If anyone would like feedback, just let me know.
  9. Sounds intriguing! It's been a long time since I've read the stories and I'm curious to see your interpretation of the mythos.
  10. Yep, non-core themebooks are allowed. :) Not a problem. Let me know if I can help in any way!
  11. I'm not sure what rulebook you're thinking of! I have the first edition of City of Mist published in 2017, and don't think there have been any updates to the core book since then. If you're thinking of the Quick-Start Rules (which are free to download on the website), those are up-to-date and can be relied upon. I'm also allowing non-core themebooks and expansion packs, but if there are any discrepancies between additional material and whatever is posted in the Quick-Start Rules and Player's Guide (see ), then I'll make rulings based on those publicly available versions. Let me know if I can help with character creation in any way. :)
  12. Hah, so I'm generally open to whatever people are interested in, including modern stories and brands—but I will say that celebrity (and real people) Mythoi might be a harder sell, at least to me. I can see celebrities being played as Rifts, certainly, but as Mythoi themselves? You'd have to make a compelling argument that they are somehow the source of the mythical powers rather than the avatar/vessel for them. :p
  13. Hi , glad to hear of your interest! Yes, all themebooks from Shadows & Showdowns are permitted. I forgot to put that up in writing somewhere—I'll add a note to the Character Creation thread. If there are any other non-core themebooks, I'm don't have them on hand, so will need to adjudicate on a case-by-case basis. Let me know if you have other questions!
  14. Welcome back to MW, Seandemonium, and I'm glad to hear of your interest! It's also been a while since I've been active on these forums, but it seems I can't stay away. :p This is my first go at MCing City of Mist, and it's great that I don't need to sell you on it, but I've thoroughly enjoyed playing it. It's stylish, fun, cinematic, atmospheric, educational, even—combining the flexibility of Fate with the intuitive structure of PbtA games. Thematically, you get urban fantasy, 'Modern Nights' intrigue, an atmospheric detective story, superhero psychopomp, and insert-your-favourite-Mythos-here in one package. I'm about to run this game for a group of friends IRL and I thought it might be well suited to PbP as well, given how much freedom players have. To your question: Hell yes. I like Excalibur. I like where you're taking this concept. Relic would be playing it straight, but what I like about CoM is that you can interpret your Mythos however you see fit. For Excalibur to manifest as Bastion, I could see her being the weapon, with spectacular martial ability used in service of protecting or defending something. You could draw parallels between the Lady of the Lake (in that particular version of the Arthurian legend) giving 'Excalibur' to Arthur (but in this case, simply shaping your character into Excalibur) to protect the Mythos' own investments. I'm curious how you'd interpret it to work with Adaptation or Divination. My impression is that Adaptation could manifest as the ability to pick up any weapon—improvised or otherwise—and kick ass with it. Every object is Excalibur when you're Excalibur. You may need to get a little creative with Divination, but maybe something like 'a sword that always strikes true'—a weapon that can sniff out evil? Or something involving the Lady of the Lake, as before. That's my rambling take on it!
  15. Well, shewt. I updated that post with pastebin links so you can copy the source code straight from there. Let me know if you encounter any other issues.
  16. City of Mist is a detective role-playing game in a city of ordinary people and legendary powers. From the Quick-Start Guide WELCOME TO THE CITY OF LEGENDS MADE FLESH. In a corrupt and haunted metropolis, individuals from all walks of life become rifts to mythical powers from beyond, torn between their personal lives and the legend growing within them. In the shadows of shiny skyscrapers and derelict residential blocks, ancient stories and urban legends assume physical form, seeping into the City through Rifts in mortal form. But the Mist, a mystical veil known only to a select few, prevents the unwitting denizens of the City from ever acknowledging the miracles they witness daily, hiding their true nature from one another. Distracted by their everyday hopes and fears, the people on the streets remain oblivious to the clash of mythical forces that drive and control the very life of the City. You were an ordinary person, until the seed of the legendary awoke within you. Now you seek answers to questions about your powers, but the truth always seems to elude you. At the same time, you still want what every human being wants: love, money, power, peace of mind. Together with your ragtag crew of gifted individuals, you work to reveal the powers operating in the dark smoky alleys of the City, just as those very powers seek you out for what you are. You will hit the streets in search of the strange cases, loose ends, and unsolved mysteries that will lead you to the truth, inevitably clashing with other legends in mortal form, agents of the powers beyond the Mist. Be warned – the truth is as dangerous as the forces that hide it. Only when you find yourself sacrificing that which is dearest to you will you truly learn the answer to the ultimate question: ‘who am I?’. But will it be worth it? New to City of Mist? The Quick-Start Rules and the free preview of the Player's Guide should be enough for you to create a character and play the game. You can download the Quick-Start Rules for free here: And you can access the first 32 pages of the Player's Guide for free here: Should you buy the book? I recommend getting the Player's Guide if you'd like some more inspiration, but the setting borrows enough from pop culture that it's not really necessary. To get started, hop over to the Casting forum and draft a character!
  17. It's all fun and games here, but let's lay down some rules to make sure things are fun for everyone. These rules apply both to content posted on MW and to off-site communication like discord. 18. Woohoo! City of Mist! I've been wanting to run and play this game for ages. Will be putting together a character concept soon if recruitment is still underway.
  19. Purgatory Credit: Type: Nightclub Calling: Furnace Impulse: to consume things Loud. Hardcore. Intense. Anything goes in Purgatory, the filthiest little hotspot for the tense and repressed suits in this city. Stepping into the nightclub is like bashing your head into a wall of sound, the flashing lights stabbing your eyes while you intake stale air choked with the rank crush of sweating bodies, cloying perfume, and god-knows-what-else. Everything in here is dirty, oversexualized, and aggressively commodified. A playground for the numb. Daybreak Credit: Type: Vice Den Calling: Maze Impulse: to trap, to frustrate passage The City doesn't get much sun. Someone misses it dearly, and this dancefloor is their kitschy tribute to that great, furtive star. Daybreak awaits clubgoers behind a grand ormolu door, which opens into a hazy, luminous space bathed in the colours of dawn. The air is laced with smoke from substances, all misty amber-gold. You can barely see more than two feet in front of you. Something about this place seems to cultivate a strange sense of solidarity in its guests, judging by the glazed, blissed-out looks on their faces as they sway in synchrony to pulsating psytrance. Lush AI-generated Type: Jazz Club Calling: Mirage Impulse: to entice and betray people Lush is a corner of refinement whisked away in the basement of an old building on one of Meatpacking's side streets. The velvet croon of a saxophone coaxes you in as you pass by: it sounds like something a long-lost lover might have whispered in your ear, entire lifetimes ago. You feel compelled to enter. There, amidst the dim haze of smoke and clinking glasses, you lose yourself to the rhythmic, switchbacking improvisations of a small band of suited musicians, accentuated by the husky tenor of a veiled singer in an evening gown as deep and blue as the ocean. Every breath blown into the sax, every snare of the drum, every throaty sigh draws you deeper into a different story, tales of apocalypse and yearning, passion and pain. As the music swells and dips, it wraps around you like a lover's embrace. Lush is a good place to contemplate your current lot in life, your next move, or the overall state of the City. Being here is good for you. Why would you ever want to leave? Eruption Credit: Type: Underground club Calling: Breeding pit Impulse: to generate badness Eruption is the underground music scene's worst kept secret. The feel is hot AF and the mix is real. Situated in an unremarkable church basement, Eruption gives people a reason to be optimistic. It's nothing like the usual club scene in the District, navigating velvet ropes and flirting with bouncers and dropping hundreds of dollars on bottle service. Nah. This runt of Misty City nightlife is about confronting the dead end that is your existence, and liberating yourself of tomorrow. In the mood to really blow off some steam? Check the backrooms.
  20. Meatpacking District A neon-drenched oasis. Credit: Type: Place of Interest Calling: Furnace Impulse: to consume A high-end, 24-hour commercial district replete with trendy restaurants and upscale boutiques, all trying to turn profits in the shadows of massive corporate arcologies. The rent here is astronomical. By day, consumerist purgatory. By night, the ground level transforms into a gentrified playground for suits (and other, less respectable patronage) in pursuit of overpriced thrills. Look a little closer, and you might find a few underground venues that cater to more discreet clientele as well. The Mist is thin, here. Welcome to the City, dollface. We look forward to meeting your money. Credit: The only unpardonable sin in this society is poverty. Money talks, so expect to find what you're looking for if your wallet can talk up a storm. At the moment, there's something of a precarious balance between the gangs, club owners, storekeepers, and other 'legitimate interests' jostling for control of various commodities. But they're small fish fighting over a small pond, always being watched through the Mythoi's ommatidial eyes.
  21. Have any questions about creating a character or about the setting and system? Ask away!
  22. Here are template sheets that you can use to put together a character. Start by deciding your character's initial level of awareness, and then select a codeblock to copy and paste into a new thread in this forum. Borderliner: 2 Mythos themes, 2 Logos themes - Legendary: 3 Mythos themes, 1 Logos theme - Touched: 1 Mythos theme, 3 Logos themes -
  23. Adaptation MYTHOS THEMEBOOK Examples: range of magic spells • adapting to harsh environments • shapeshifting or power copying • mysterious, unpredictable focus • elemental manipulation Mortal life is in a constant state of flux and change: nothing is permanent, everything is ephemeral. Different challenges require entirely different means to overcome. Some Mythoi grant their Rifts the power to adapt to circumstance. Do they consciously do this to improve the Rift’s chances of telling their story? Or is it simply the case because their story is a story of resourcefulness and limitless possibilities to begin with? It is impossible to know. The aboriginal Mythos of Dreamtime could allow its Rift to tap into the dimension underlying creation and bend reality. Merlin the sorcerer could whip out a spell to tackle any situation. A shaman could shapeshift into animals and monsters. A doppleganger could mimic the powers of other Rifts it touches. And Pinocchio's father, Geppetto, could build toys and puppets that come to life. Adaption themes gravitate towards broad tags by nature and so often take up the single broad tag allowed for your character. However, if the variety of effects granted by this theme is rather narrow, such as the doppelganger, who can only copy existing powers, the MC may rule that a tag still qualifies as specific. Concept Think about your Mythos. In the legend, did your Mythos possess many different powers? Were they able to shape a substance, element, form, or concept to respond to various challenges? What was the unifying element in all of the manifestations of their powers? Based on this, think about the answer to the question below: ❓ HOW DOES YOUR MYTHOS ADAPT TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES? It has a range/collection/set of _______. It can control and/or shape _______. It changes its _______. It changes based on _______. Next, think of a few details from your legend that you can use to flesh out this concept. Use them to inspire your answers to the tag questions below. Power Tag Questions Answer the first question, then choose two more questions to answer. Answer each question with a single description no more than a few words long. In your answer, describe something that will be useful to your character. Each answer becomes a power tag. Write it on your theme card under power tags along with the question. A. What Mythos power allows you to respond differently to every situation? B. What narrow group of effects within your Mythos' domain have you mastered? C. What specific manifestation of your Mythos is you favourite? D. What circumstances enhance your ability to adapt? E. What situations do you have a quick solution for or are accustomed to? F. What do your powers naturally protect you from? G. What attitude or emotion lies at the core of your adaptive powers? H. What specific class of things or beings can you produce or summon? I. What strategy or combination of effects do you employ in battle? J. How can you enhance or weaken others with your powers? Weakness Tag Questions Choose one question to answer. Answer it with a single description no more than a few words long. In your answer, you should describe something that will impede your character's actions. Your answer becomes a weakness tag. Write it on your theme card under weakness tags along with the question. A. What are your powers of adaptivity dependent on? B. What results are harder for your Mythos to achieve? C. What hinders your Mythos or limits its possibilities? D. What bad habits did you pick up due to your adaptive powers? Extra Tags If you haven't done so in other themebooks, you may choose one additional power tag question and one additional weakness tag question to answer. Write both on your theme card. Mystery Choose a mystery for this theme: a question that your Mythos wants you to explore, investigate, or discover the answer to. It could be related to your powers, to your legend, or to your mundane life. For example: (Merlin) Where is the Holy Grail now? (Doppelganger) What is the ultimate identity I could steal? (Pygmalion) Who or what can breathe life into my creation? You can try exploring the following options: philosophical questions about the nature of source of your powers seeking something greater than your powers fears of losing touch with your original nature, or fears of not knowing what your true nature is Write your mystery on your theme card. Let me know what kind of clues your character might find interesting. I'll create opportunities for you to find answers to your Mystery. Ignoring these opportunities means you have lost interest in what your Mythos has in store for you. Title Name your theme in a way that encapsulates its nature and style. Write its name on your theme card under TITLE. For example: (Merlin) Wizened Wizard (Doppelganger) Mirror Mirror (Pygmalion) In Love with a Muse Theme Improvements Whenever you gain an improvement for this theme, you can choose one of the following: Game Changer When you Change the Game with power tags from this theme, it’s Dynamite! Tap Into The Source Once per session, you get a free batch of 2 Juice with a method that relates to this theme and to the circumstances of the current scene. You cannot add this batch to another batch. I Have Just The Thing When you spend a Clue to ask the MC or one of the other players “What would be most useful to me in this situation?”, they answer as usual. If you then have any remaining Clues in the same batch, you can convert them to Juice, one for one, and use it to come up with the thing you need most. This Juice has the same method as the Clues it came from. Creative Stroke When you use tags from this theme in a creative way, choose one of the most affected characters and ask whoever is playing it (the MC or another player) whether they saw it coming. They must answer honestly. If they didn’t, take a temporary status creative-stroke-1 (or similar). Specialization You’ve learned to master a specific type of manifestation. Choose a power tag question from any of the other Mythos themebooks except Relic and answer it. Write down the answer as a new power tag on this theme.
