"What do you mean, we?" Ellie asks, playfully. "I'm just going along for the show. If you are planning on throwing your life in front of the knights for the pauper prince, that's on you. I told you all this is a horrible idea."

Steve continued playing his instrument, even as he projected into the minds of every thug in the area (especially the one with the dagger), <<What the Prince meant was, there's a bomb on the ship. There's a bomb on every spelljammer ship. You'd be better off swimming, than being blown up on deck. Leave the ship, if you want to live.>>

    Mechanics

Active spells: Going to pretty much always have Comprehend Languages active, as a ritual.

Action: Casting Suggestion on the thug with the knife, though. To leave the ship. Please note: Instrument of the Bards imposes disadvantage to saves for this, I think. Wisdom DC 15 save.

  3. According to the source I won't name here, it is in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse, and Volo's Guide to Monsters. I think Morkenkainen is the more recent version, but that's mainly because it has less features, and I don't really know for sure.

Either way, use one of those, or your own homebrew, since it is your game. But if I were to apply, I would be interested in probably trying a lizardfolk druid, just because they seem like they would be interesting in the lore you have presented, even though their racial traits are probably not well suited to that class.

Edit: Heh. I see @Makkiu beat me to it. :)

Nyx relaxes her pose slightly, as the noble Rogue changes tacts. Not entirely, she hasn't forgotten how she heard the woman treat the bartender, but at least a little. "Still, you can't afford me. And my advice is still sound; rather than approaching random travelers on the train, I find it is best to ask a local urchin or tout for information about guides. The scrawnier the better; the fatter touts are more likely to direct you to whoever is lining their pockets the most, rather than whoever can help you," she advises, a bit more warmth in her words. "People here on the train are likely to overcharge, knowing that they are the first people you see and there is a smaller pool of willing hirelings. Trust me on this, or don't; it isn't really my business how you spend your coin. But if you are putting together a expedition, go with the people on the ground, see if you can get a few competing offers, and select the ones that seem most competent, rather than the ones that just seem cheapest or most eager. The bar car on the train is not the place to recruit your expeditionary force, it is just the place to note who is going where you are going, and possibly find friends you want to band together with, rather than employees you want to hire."

At the half-orc's expression of interest, and the bugbear's exorbitant offer, Nyx raises an eyebrow, but remains silent. She meets Rogue's eye and gives a half-smile. "My name's Nyx," she says, by way of introduction to any who seem to be paying the changeling that isn't throwing gold around any mind, "The name stands for Not For Hire."

Nyx glances up when the guards ask their question. "Yes," she comments, distracted more by her conversation than whatever the heavily armed and armored guardsbeings. "Business or pleasure, very sad tragedy, hope you don't know anyone aboard," she waves, vaguely. "The answer is yes."

Nyx notices the woman with the perpetual sneer as she berates the poor bartender, but doesn't pay much attention until she approaches the table. At her words, the changeling looks her up and down, taking in the traveling cloak and dress, and the wine glass in her hand. "Well," she says, frowning slightly at whatever she sees, "I can already tell you can't afford me. You might have more luck trying the urchins and touts at the platform when we stop, they can probably direct you to a guide in your... Price range."

Nyx smiles at Little Spring. "Yes, celebrate their life. Well, I am still hoping they are holed up somewhere around the crash, but I'll have to wait and see when I get there. But what about you?" she asks, looking at the tabaxi fighter questioningly.

"I know you said you are returning home, to chop wood in the frontier, but why? There have to be higher paying jobs in the city, and one big loss shouldn't be the end of the fighting career. Are you... running from creditors, perhaps? Big ones, that break legs?" She looks again at the giant tabaxi fighter. "Well, you probably don't need to worry about that. What makes running halfway across the continent seem like the answer, I wonder, Little Spring?"

She listens with half an ear as the rest of the room seems interested in talking about some signal, and ordering tea and lemonade. Seems like nobody in this bar car wants to actually drink any alcohol; not that she is any different, with her glass of water. Either way, a lot of them seem to be going to the crash site, too. At least it will be easy to find a group of people going that way.

"Oh, she'd still be interested. Trust me. You should hear her talk," Nyx said, happily. "Money isn't everything, friend. As for me... I was going to Oakhurst to steal its secrets. But now that I know it's your hometown, I guess I'll have to leave it be. Shame." She frowned for a moment, in mock sadness.

The sadness didn't last long, though, and she perked right back up. "I guess I'll have to go see about the crash of the Gigantic. Did you hear about it? Huge airship, supposed to be the most luxurious thing... But then it crashed." She then frowned again. "People died, I suppose, but I'm going to see if I can get there and... I don't really know. Find out what happened. I had some friends from Sharn on that ship, I guess I just need closure. You know?" she asked her new furry friend.

Nyx looked up, and up, at the big tabaxi. And thought, Beauty and the beast. And he's wearing the same thing as me! A girl can't get any luck. She laughed to herself. "Sure, big guy, take a seat. My name's Nyx. I see you went with stripes, too; very fashionable choice." The changeling paused for a second. "Little Spring? The pit fighter? Hah, one of my sisters is totally in love with you, you know. She would kill to be sitting next to you right now. What brings you to the train to Oakhurst, if you don't mind me asking. Is there a tournament out there?" She makes room for him to sit, but also turns her body to tilt in towards him slightly, and watches him with those eyes that seem to see right through him, piercingly; although, without an iris, she could very well be looking anywhere else, nobody could tell.

"As for not hiding, there isn't much point in a mask on the train. It isn't like I am some sort of changeling infiltrator, trying to sneak into a frontier town to steal all their secrets."

Nyx looked up from where she was sitting in the lounge, watching the interaction between the lady and the bugbear. Beauty and the beast. She laughed a little to herself at the thought.

Although she could have afforded to ride in the northern car, she had bought passage in Coach class, and had already decided that she would probably spend much of the trip in the lounge. Nyx didn't make any effort to hide her status as a changeling, and appeared rather outlandish; initially, as a bright redheaded woman covered in tattoos, but since someone was already wearing that, she decided to change. Purple hair and unnaturally pale skin, with black stripes across her body it was. With a little wiggle and a smile, her appearance shifted into her new fashion.

Deciding that she didn't want to be a fourth wheel, she didn't invite herself to their table, but rather took a seat nearby; close enough that she could overhear their conversation, but far enough away to give the illusion of privacy. In the meantime, she looked around for anyone else that may want to talk, as the scenery outside left something to be desired.

Steve thinks for a moment, as he watches the others try words to get through the crowd. He briefly considers just casting fly and going to the ship himself, but that wouldn't get the Captain there, and probably wouldn't earn him any friends. Instead, he simply projects his thoughts to the entire crowd, as a loud and overbearing thought. <<Out of the Way! Make a Hole! Spelljamming Officers Coming Through! Move Off!>> He combines his projection with action, and begins pushing and shoving, to open a path for the others. All the while, he continues playing his music, a more martial marching tune at this point.

    Mechanics

Active spells: Going to pretty much always have Comprehend Languages active, as a ritual.

Action: -Mind-yelling at everyone to let them through. Both Intimidation and Persuasion have the same modifier, so either skill should work. Range is 120', so shouldn't be a problem to yell in everyone's mind.

    On the Way

Hunni spends her time riding along in the wagon, napping, and playing with her toys. When Coltan and Modri start talking, she listens with half an ear, until Coltan looks at her and she listens a bit more carefully. Eventually, she decides to comment. "Coltan... Apprentice. Last time I tried to bring this up, you called me a fool, and ignored what I had to say. But yes, you are right, I think you are being hypo... hyp..." she strokes the whip at her side again. "You are being as bad as the nobles you hate. Um." She glances at Fairla, as though unsure she should talk in front of strangers, but continues anyway. "Before... Before yesterday, you were part of torture; with words, threats. Then, you used words to trap an unarmed prisoner, an enemy, but an unarmed prisoner, in a situation where you would have a chance to execute him. After we, well, I killed him, you said it was Ok, and your words said you thought he was not a person, his life was not worth a person's life. Lieutenant Michelle said mean things to the guards sent to mind her. You used your words to torture and kill. Of the two, you did worse, in my opinion. We aren't judged by how we treat our friends. Apprentice of Reorx... Your actions were worse than anything those nobles did, you treat people you consider your lessers worse than a noble treats a commoner. So yes, I do believe you disrespect people with your words. And your actions." She sighs.

"I don't really like or respect Lieutenant Michelle, she has more blood on her hands than we do. And I don't mind killing the enemy, in general. Lieutenant Michelle was mean to her guards, because they are not her friends, they are not there for her protection, they don't work for her. They are her enemy, tolerated but not loved. But she wasn't mean to her servants, her people, at the manor. She may be wrong, but at least she respected the idea that prisoners would be treated humanely, as we treated her humanely. When our new companions were captured by the enemy, they were kept in cages, not tortured and killed. Only one side seems to torture and kill prisoners, and it isn't the dragon army, Apprentice of Reorx."

    Arriving at Steel Springs

Sneaking up with the others, Hunni is surprised by the chaos they find, the fleeing soldiers, and the dragon army pursuers. She quickly moves up a bit, and grumbles. "Horses again. Had to be more horses. I suppose we will adopt them, too," she comments, disgusted with the situation. Staff in one hand, shield in the other, she moves forward and flings shadowy blasts at one of the mounted soldiers from the tip of her staff, as slingstones from a hoopak. One bolt flies wide, and the other is easily deflected by the soldier.

Roll the expended Hit Dice and add them together. The damage that the creature takes increases by an amount equal to that total.

Amulet of Proof against Detection and Location. While wearing this amulet, you are hidden from divination magic. You can't be targeted by such magic or perceived through magical scrying sensors.

  13. Yeah. Then there are always situations where people think things work like they did in older editions, and it turns out they just had homebrew all along that they didn’t know about. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s strange how people get about their games.

Probably good that you checked, though.

  14. Heh. Collateral damage. Like the whole city being adamantine bombed?

That said, yeah, fireball sounds like a bad idea.

Steve is probably going to try something when I get a chance, but he’ll be very open to whatever orders Celsior or the captain give him.
