The Voice from the Void

Background:

Even though Kintargo is somewhat removed from the infernal, oppressive influences of Cheliax, the Silver City is not free of the injustices and prejudices of its mother country, something that those on the lower rungs of the societal ladder know all too well. Despite being born as a human and having the fortune of being born in a family that wasn't destitute, Fiametta would grow to learn about these prejudices all too well.

Fiametta's father was a wizard from Nidal who made it his life's work to research the planes of existence, namely the Negative Plane. At first, it was no issue, with his work being carried on out of sight and out of mind, affecting no one. It wasn't until one night, when his research went too far and he peered too wide into the Void, letting some of its energy out into his home. Concern for his family overshadowed his scientific curiosity and he ended his experiment, thankful that he had not caused any harm to his family, though he wouldn't know the truth until his wife gave birth to Fiametta months later.

The girl was born healthy enough, but shortly afterwards the girl devoured her own shadow, something that caused the nursemaid to flee, decrying the newborn as some sort of unholy abomination. But to her family, they only saw a daughter and a sister. The rest of Kintargo however, did not view the girl with such grace, believing that Fiametta's lack of a shadow was some sort of proof that her father's research had caused her to be born wicked. And so the girl grew up shunned and mistreated by Kintargan society, to the point where she was largely kept home and educated by her mother and sisters. The knowledge that his research caused his daughter to be born as someone shunned caused him to virtually shut down.

In her seclusion, Fiametta learned how to become a skilled writer and linguist while also pouring through her father's research in order to learn what was wrong with her.  While she learned more about the energy inside her and how to use it to some degree, she couldn't figure out what was wrong with her or how to fix it. And it filled her with a rage. A rage at the fact that because of things she didn't even do, she would be an outcast and there was nothing to be done about it. All she knew was that she'd have to take it out on someone before it burned her up.

She found a Tiefling. Drunk, alone, and lying in a gutter hoping to pass out. A perfect target for a little catharsis, since she couldn't imagine anyone would care about what happened to him. At first she started with words, shouting out profanities and verbal abuses before she started to kick the hapless Tiefling as he lay there. She didn't know how far her rage would take her when her sisters caught up to her and stopped her from doing something she wouldn't be able to take back.

And it was in that moment where she realized she was hardly any different than any of those who shunned or mistreated her, as here she was making someone miserable because they were beneath her. For a long time, her guilt caused her to shut herself up in seclusion. Until Barzillai Thrune took over the city and the Night of Ashes occurred.  Then her guilt filled her with a need to take action. For the Tiefling she abused and everyone else that was overlooked and treated like dirt.

A paper. She could start a paper. One where she could use her talents to denounce Barzillai, curse him, mock him, and stir up the people of Kintargo who wouldn't take it anymore. And she could do it all from a position of anonymity, as the Voice of the Void.

Personality:

Fiametta works to keep her emotions in check just as much as she works to keep the forces inside her at bay. Her upbringing has filled her with a rage over being mistreated because of her differences as well as the fact that there's nothing that can be done to fix them. In addition to serving as a means of stirring up protest, her paper also serves as a way of release for her, allowing her to use those negative emotions as a tool to denounce Barzillai and get the people going. She also has a strong sense of justice that is at least in part motivated by the guilt she feels over the night where she assaulted a Tiefling that hadn't even wronged her. Similarly, that guilt is one of the reasons she keeps her identity as the Voice of the Void secret.

One of the other products of Fiametta's lonely childhood is her focus on writing. Years of working alone in her home has left her with perfect penmanship and a constant focus on developing her writing style and mastering new forms of calligraphy. Additionally, she has an inexplicable interest in learning other languages, in particular learning how to swear in other languages.

Her exposure to the energies of the Negative Plane has also robbed her of the ability to be bored. After all the years of reading, and lessons, and being stuck in her home, and there was never an exhaustion in doing so, never a day where she needed some new experience to be injected into her life in order to stave off madness.

Appearance:

Despite all the focus on her being different, Fiametta doesn't look any different from anyone else, except for being a little short. She has healthy olive-colored skin, brown hair that goes down to her neck, and a pair of brown eyes that can either carefully scan her surroundings or deliver a withering death glare. Standing at 5'2", her stature likely doesn't lead one to believe that she has such a rage and passion that would allow her to serve as the Voice of the Void.
