War Service

Because of the war, Charles is immune to San loss from corpses and gross injuries. His left wrist is scarred and not all that strong and flexible. He is likely to go unresponsive if explosions go off in succession, especially so in high-occult areas.

Charles Avebury

When the bombs fall over the trenches you can hear nothing but the bombs. You fall into a stupor, stare into the Void, and sometimes the Void stares back. At those times he saw things he shouldn’t see and things he didn’t believe: a ghostly grim reaper walking the trench tapping victims for the next day, ghouls in no man’s land fighting over human limbs, and the dead standing up to run or shamble away from them.

A shell fragment hit him in his gold watch, breaking his wrist, and he was sent back for recovery. The doctor said he was lucky; if it hadn’t hit his watch, it would have torn his hand off. He was declared unfit, no longer able to hold a rifle, and honorably discharged. What do they know. He can hold a rifle just fine, and his only limitation is he can’t lift and carry as well as he used to. Others he knew got off far less lightly, or didn’t come back from the war at all.

Back in England, he went to university to study the human mind, to see if he could make the nightmares go away. But his good-but-not-posh accent led the other students to ridicule and ostracize him. He left and moved to Miskatonic in the American colonies. There he found university more expensive than he could afford, but he stayed in the university town and hung out his shingle as “Private Investigator and Confidante”. Sometimes people seeking a PI really just want to talk about their problems, and his schooling and reading was of some use to them. Sometimes the answer to a woman whose husband is cheating on her isn’t to tail him; it’s to make her feel worth something and to help her start a new life away from him.

The untrained American ear can’t tell the difference between his accent and posh, plus they admire British accents, so he gets by in educated and high society in Miskatonic. But alone in his house in the evening, if he puts on a record or turns the radio to music, all he hears are the bombs raining down on the trenches. It makes him stare into the Void, and like in the war and not like in England, here in Miskatonic the Void stares back.

He still wears his lucky watch. The face and workings are shattered, so of course it isn’t useable as a watch anymore. But he cleaned it up and replaced the glass facing so it’s presentable as jewelry. He owes that watch big time.

[Reserved for character sheet]

Odd, that 'Character Sheets' tab isn't letting me make a normal post, just link to a sheet. So I'm going to ramble here about a character concept. Feel free to move this topic to where you feel is appropriate.

I think "character sheets" is tied into the sheets mechanic on the site...so you create a character in your account and then can add/link it to this game via the "character sheets" menu.

🤷‍♂️
