DESCRIPTION:

Able to change her appearance with but a thought the Lady Melia rarely shows anyone her true face. Publicly she presents the image of a noble of High Atlantean stock in fashionable robes with her long red hair done up. Yet Melia is no courtly maiden to sit around discussing the latest intrigues but an experienced adventurer who was raised among the shorebound far from Atalan. For this work she favors far simple practical clothing that doesn't stand out, while in the highest stakes battles she will take on an elemental aspect as the sea is ever her strength.

Personality wise while she has spent several centuries as a noble of a mighty empire Melia still only plays at haughtiness. In truth she dislikes all social interactions and tries to limit such activities. She gets on best with scholars and professionals of magic and would rather discuss (or better yet merely listen to) insights on planar harmonics or rare species of birds. Or such has been true over the last century or so, once a much younger woman lived for adventure and seeing new places and people's first hand not simply in texts and treastises. A love she has been slowly rediscovering since learning to Gatewalk.

spacer.pngHistory:

The Great Empire of Atalan is a blessed kingdom unrivaled above or below the sea. Breathing water and air with equal vigor its people are strong of arm and quick of mind. They are a hardy people and live for many long lives of men, giving themselves over to death only when they are weary of life. And whether they roam on their own or in the great ships they build to carry trade there is said to be no shore unknown to them though they are seen but seldom in other lands and most regard the Kings of Men Over the Sea as but a myth.

That was all Melia knew of her heritage as a child. She had been found abandoned on the shores near a small fishing village two weeks of hard riding away from the nearest trade port far. Her parents ran the village smithy and never allowed their daughter to feel less than loved completely for all that she was not their blood. Melia always knew she was not of the village or its people, even the most seasoned divers could not equal her in the water though she was careful to keep the full extent of her abilities to herself. Though doing so left her with few friends, and fewer still she could truly be herself with.

Finally when Melia was almost of age her heritage came looking for her. It was an old tale really, of the sort the bards never tire. A noble house torn by familial strife and usurpation. A child spirited away in the dead of night who vanished without a trace, and an old retainer still loyal to Melia’s blood parents seeking her to reverse their fortunes. And reverse them Melia would. She crossed the sea, came into magic and might, exposed her wicked uncle’s misdeeds before the king and court, then restored her blood father to his ancient seat.

That was Melia’s first adventure, but not her last. Over the years she would dive beneath the northern ice, explore the wide plains and ancient temples of the south, and many more. Friends and acquaintances came and went as suited each relationship, while at other times Melia walked the world alone. Over time her interests drifted towards the more scholarly and sedate and she took a position with the Coral Tower in Atalan’s capital, settling into the role of teacher while pursuing various avenues of arcane research.

Then came the war. From out of the north a shadow of wicked might, the Black Lord came and covered land after land in darkness. Atalan went to war to defend her allies in the shorebound lest they be swallowed up and the shadow cover the seas in turn. A veteran magic user of a noble house Melia was required to serve. She infiltrated enemy camps, defeated vile sorceries, and scattered the enemies that came against her in battle. She lost friends, lost a lover, and almost lost her life countless times.

Yet Atalan triumphed, throwing back the Black Lord and humbling his armies before them. As the final battle loomed though their enemy threw new and shocking forces at them, things summoned from another realm where rumor said the Black Lord might have first sprung. It took a Realmwarden intervention to see the villain overthrown at last, and it was from them that Melia discovered the art of Gatewalking lay within herself. Now several years later she has left her own world behind seeking to understand the greater Multiverse so that her home might never be so threatened again.

  • 5 weeks later...

I really like Melia's concept and backstory, plus the idea of a Not-Atlantis is something I can appreciate as someone who at one point was obsessed with legends of real-world Atlantis.

Can you give me a few details about her world of origin? I know you touched on the Great Empire of Atalan, but I'm curious what sort of world it belongs to.

Sure I'd say the core idea in my head Melia's Not-Atlantis is also Not-Númenor.

So the world of... let's say Meridian... has that older more mythic sort of flavor compared to say a Faerun or Golarion which are really post-medieval once you nail them down. Vast stretches of territory are truly wild if get lost you might never hit a road much less a village ever again. Lots of old ruins and plenty of monsters for your Conan types to seek out. What nations exists lean toward the city state even where the queen or king claims a larger dominion. Once there might have been greater nations (elven? draconic?) but they perished in a previous great darkness much like the one Atalan recently fought off.

Atalan would in contrast be a pretty idyllic and developed place, lots of arts and culture and especially magic (classic magic not like steampunk magictech) and if not yet completely drunk on their own hubris they accept descriptions like "the Kings of Men over the Sea" unironically and tend to expect 'lesser' men to defer to them. Melia being an exception of course.
