Captain Hestrig Orlov is bound to a chair in the library, attempting to push the party toward finding and dealing with Radosek, the second-in-command of the tower and currently in charge due to Nazhena's absence.

Kids these days were something else. But Brand had to respect someone who could give away their commander's secrets but still look so smug. In either event, it seemed she didn't know much about the girl or the witches' plans, not that he was surprised that was the case. People in charge rarely told those who were hired as protection the finer details of their plans. "One last question then. Why do you fight for this...Nazhena and the witches?"

It wasn't something that mattered in the grand scheme of things, but Brand couldn't help but be curious why anyone would work for someone who steals children and creates snowy portals halfway across the world for no good reason.

Once his curiosity was sated one way or another, he'd knock her out and they'd take her with them. First to her room to confirm she didn't know anything, then to find this raven room to see about finding a way to the witch.

With a stern look at Brand, she answers his last question.

"Nazhena is powerful. I do not serve the White Witches, I served Nazhena. Her magic defeated mine and my people. It was an honorable defeat. I pledged service to her. I do not regret what led me here, only that twice now I have been bested like this. Now, having learned more of my heritage than I expected, I'll not make the same mistake. If I live, I'll make my own way back to what remains of my people. My magic is my magic. I won't let it be diluted by the Witches' studies and methods."

In the quiet calm back towards the dining hall - regardless of what fate the Captain meets - the sudden sound of breaking glass is heard. Shouting and furniture being shoved follows.

Rushing to the south through the doors, the hallway leads to another small room. Inside is a pair of identical monkey-men - Vanara, to those who know their southern Casmaron peoples - are currently in an indistinct shouting match and pillows and blankets strewn about may soon turn to chairs and fists.

Silvermane tosses a decanter of liquid and it smashes on the wall as he spits out, "Oh I can't believe you! Here I am and you still insist on maintaining this ridiculous charade! Just admit what you've done and that you are the loathsome impostor that you are!"

Silvermane deftly dodges the decanter and retorts, "Impostor!? How dare you! I am quite sure that I am the original and you are the detestable mimic! Now end this travesty of dark comedy and reveal your true face!"

After Brand knocked out the Captain, he slung her over his shoulder as they started to make their way. He pondered her response as they walked, still not sure what to do with the woman. So in typical fashion, Brand decided to take the 'wait and see' approach. They still had a long way to go, and if there were no traps like she had said, odds were good she would survive. He would be much less wary of her after the tower had been dealt with. He took the lead as they heard a crash, and when the door opened, he found himself very confused by the scene. He leaned over slightly toward Kal as he set the captain down next to him. "No one mentioned a bunch of monkeys in the tower..." He slowly drew his weapon. As much as he regretted it, Brand decided it might be wise to see if they were hostile or even sentient. He let out a shrill whistle to get the attention of both primates. "Which of you knows the layout of the tower?" At the very least, if they attacked first, he knew what would follow. Trolls, Dragon-women warriors, and now a pair of monkeys...This tower seemed to get more maddening with every room.

Description

Vili is obviously very, very proud of his long, luxurious golden hair. It is apparent that he has devoted hours every day to washing, combing, braiding and even waxing it. He believes he is the most handsome dwarf in all of Taldor, and it shows. The pleasant scent of musk and spices travels with him as he typically perfumes his clothes. He carries a dwarven warhammer that is inscribed with glowing runes at his belt, and has a sturdy heavy shield that has painted with the symbol of Torag. He also wears an amulet with Torag's symbol around his neck. His chest is covered by shiny armor that fits him like a glove, but leaves his impressive arm muscles uncovered for general admiration. His voice is deep and breathy and strangely musical. He has a very unsettling gaze, as if he is looking directly into people's souls, so he is careful to keep his eyes half-lidded when he wishes to be more friendly.

Silvermane notices the people at the door, "Oh it's you people. I bet this scoundrel knows this place given that he lives here! The blackguard has led a windy chase but I've cornered him in his lair!"

Silvermane grabs a brass urn and chucks it at his double, "Charlatan! Have at you! I bet you're in cahoots with these interlopers, and I'll have you know that my home is far away from here where I'd hoped to never cross paths with a duplicitous dolt such as you!"

Brand gave the others a confused look as the pair of monkeys continued to fixate on each other. Was this was crazy felt like? He let out another sharp whistle. "Hey! What seems to be the problem with the two of you?" He decided to leave out the 'other than being monkeys' part. To his companions, he whispered. "Do we just close the door and walk away? They don't seem helpful...or like they are all there."

Caida peers into the room, scrutinizing the pair of strange creatures before looking up and Brand as if to say 'can I eat them?'

Vili gives the creatures a similar gaze of confusion, and nods to Brand. "Aye," he says. "It donnae sound like they have anythin' of value fer our quest, boot at least they aren't attackin' us like everythin' else in this cursed tower. Might be they donnae work fer the witches. Oy, you two, tell us what the other one will do if we let 'im come with us?"

He squints at the two creatures, attempting to determine more about their motivations and trustworthiness with his special intuition.

The Pale Tower - Second Floor, Southern Guest Rooms

Whatever these two are, whether they're something more beneath their immediate appearance, Brand himself can't tell any actual difference. They're both mad monkeys, it seems. Caida, however, seems to be far more wary of the southern one, the one being said to live here. She seems confused by it.

However, Vili may not be familiar with Casmaron, but he is familiar with magic and evil. With the accusations of being a hedge wizard, Vili's examination of the two of them can pick up a few tells:

The one by the window is indeed a spellcaster while the one on the furniture is not, yet both have the classic smell of magic around them. Yet, at the same time, neither smell of outright witchcraft, fey magics, or evil.

Worst of all, both seem to be telling some form of truth. They're too angry to suss out the truth, but both have wrapped their accusations around some kernel of reality. The one by the window is absolutely a mage, though probably not a "duplicitous hedge wizard". The other has definitely spent other peoples' money and has lived in the tower long enough that Caida smells it on him, but whether he's a backstabber or ruined familial ties is up in the air.

Vili frowns, apparently frustrated at the non-conclusive results. "All right," he says, "Annae reason we shouldn't just leave you to it? You, ye obviously live here. How will ye help us if we get involved in yer little disagreement? An' you, ye're obviously a wizard o' some ken. If we help ye defeat yer doppelganger, what will ye do fer us?"

(Though Vili pretends not to care either way, those who have gotten to know him may recognize that he is starting to favor one of the two vanaras.)

Description

Vili is obviously very, very proud of his long, luxurious golden hair. It is apparent that he has devoted hours every day to washing, combing, braiding and even waxing it. He believes he is the most handsome dwarf in all of Taldor, and it shows. The pleasant scent of musk and spices travels with him as he typically perfumes his clothes. He carries a dwarven warhammer that is inscribed with glowing runes at his belt, and has a sturdy heavy shield that has painted with the symbol of Torag. He also wears an amulet with Torag's symbol around his neck. His chest is covered by shiny armor that fits him like a glove, but leaves his impressive arm muscles uncovered for general admiration. His voice is deep and breathy and strangely musical. He has a very unsettling gaze, as if he is looking directly into people's souls, so he is careful to keep his eyes half-lidded when he wishes to be more friendly.

Silvermane seems to consider Vili's words, "Listen... I didn't give much thought how to get home from here, wherever 'here' is. I just followed you guys in because you were really good at neutralizing the opposition. After this, I'd be glad to go along with you further and add my spells to your repertoire. Despite what this miscreant says, I'm a skilled spellcaster and healer."
