Lusinga la Veritas, Magos par Excellence

Chaotic Neutral Human(?) Illusionist

Biography

Lusinga la Veritas introduces himself grandly. He proclaims himself a magos par excellence"Exceptional Mage", presumably. For whatever reason, la Veritas's injections of some unknown secondary language escape the machinations of a Gatewalker's translator. with a sweeping bow and a flourish of the hand. When greeting members of the Realmwalkers, he calls himself an illusionist, otherwise he leaves the trick to his trade to the imagination.

Despite his bombastic introduction and generally gregarious personality, Lusinga is loath to speak of himself. Those who have pried anything out of him have recieved conflicting reports. He was a nobles son, or a general's, or a king's, or an archmage's. He killed his father and fled the realm, or was due to be married to an orc queen, or was abducted by the fey as a child.

The inconsistency, most have concluded, is the point. La Veritas is a mysterious man, and that mystery is essential to both his survival and the efficacy of his craft, and so he is generally forgiven his ellusiveness. Lacking the mortal threat of many other members of the guild, his mystery is also considered to not be that much of a concern.

Personality

When performing, la Veritas is bombastic, gregarious, and personable. He moves with flare, ever including flourishes of magic that accentuate his movements. He greets people in a loud and friendly voice, his deep, smooth baritone only barely muffled by his mask. He greets the world with wry tone and easy wit. Rarely does his facade drop, though when it does it reveals a nastier streak of bleak, myopic humour, constrasted by a slow, thoughtful, deliberate kindness, granted only rarely and only to dear friends, children, and small animals.

Spark

Chaotic Neutral Fairy Fey Adept (Sidhe Invoker) 9/Incanter 9

Theme: Mephisto — Queen Bee (Translated Lyrics)My toes, hungry for a last chance
Began to dance across the night sky
An ordinary stance will never enchant
Only stars can be the envy of jewels

Tears and sweat float on the surface, the traces of blood
To only swim in someone’s eyes is but a play
But the stage won’t let me go
I’ll seek for it forevermore, longing for it

I’ve never seen such a liar.
You must have been born with this level of depravity
This lie is love. And this lie is a gift to the world.
Remember who you lived alongside

I’ll risk my life, I’ll give my life to you
After all, you gave me time, didn’t you?
Once I fulfill all my desires, ah, once I achieve them
I want to see you
So I wish upon a star

Is something only precious when you can never go back?
If you never start, it’s easier to look down on it
But it’s never going to get any easier
A sad light that gathers day after day

You must have been born this way, with this level of depravity
This lie is love. And this lie is a gift to the world.
I’ve forgotten who I lived as!

If life would only return to you, if it could reach you
I don’t care what happens to me
But it seems all things cannot be fulfilled
If I can’t be with you, then I want to be you
The stars shatter, then shine

I’ll risk my life, I’ll give my life to you
After all, you gave me time, didn’t you?
Once I fulfill all my desires, ah, once I achieve them
I want to see you
So I wish upon a star

Come, children of the stars, sleep well
The light will not dim, if you’re the ones who shine
Come, children of the stars, aim well
No flickering allowed, if you’re the ones who shine

Biography

Spark is a fairy. Not as in a fey creature (though she is), but rather a being from literal fairy tales. A storybook creature, larger than life, exaggerated, absurd, and abstracted, made manifest through the twisting confluence of the multiverse and the seething chaos of the Faewyld on her home plane.

Spark’s origin is the impetus for a great deal of her personhood (if, indeed, she could be called a person). She is weaved of the myths the people of her home plane hold towards fairies (as, indeed, are all fey from that place), and while she was bound to the exact shape of her storybook form only until the moment of her manifestation, that has shaped how she has evolved.

Spark is a twisted creature, mischievous and misanthropic, prone to trickery and pranks, and taking great enjoyment out of the suffering of others. While she falls shy of outright malice, it is a near thing. She views the world around her as a great story, or perhaps a game, and the people with whom she interacts as toys, played with for the entertainment of whatever force manipulates them, be they gods or her own illusions.

As her worldview has broadened, helped in no small part by her ability to leave the myopic mire of her home faewyld through Gatewalking, Spark came to understand, intellectually, that people are actually people, with emotions and thoughts and the whole caboodle. Being able to think of others in this way requires active effort from her, but she’s trying her best.

An additional product of Spark’s broadening worldview is the knowledge of her personal fragility. Though she is an exceptionally powerful illusionist, and a natural trickster of preternatural skill, she is nevertheless tiny and weak and supremely delicious. To offset this, she has bent her considerable skills towards constructing a monumental falsehood.

Spark, diminutive fairy girl, is not an official member of the Realmwardens. No, that honour falls to Lusinga la Veritas, human(?) illusionist par excellence and famed dilettante. Though masked and mysterious, ever wrapped in illusions, he plays the face, and Spark his mere familiar. In truth, Lusinga does not exist at all, a false creature woven of shadowstuff and trickery. However, Spark’s raw capacity for illusion magic (and a carefully-practiced trick in the subtle weaving thereof) have allowed her to pass off Lusinga’s flickering unreality as a function of his mystique and illusory mastery. Ever is he present, yet not where he seems to be, master illusionist of the Realmwardens, accompanied by his tricksome familiar.

Personality

In terms of personality, Spark is quite raw. A meddlesome, pranksome little gremlin-creature, she is easily entranced by shiny objects, explosions, and graphic violence. When an item catches her fancy, she will generally endeavour to pilfer it. She is not solely bound by these impulses, but neither does she generally have much motive to suppress them. Only when interacting with other Realmwardens (and a few other exceptional cases) does she make an effort towards being personable, and then usually through the proxy of la Veritas.

Lusinga la Veritas, fictional as he is, plays the role of Machiavellian performer. Grandiose, theatrical, gregarious, fond of flexing the splendour of his magical mien to the delight or despair of those around him, depending upon their allegiance. Ever does he seem to have outschemed friends and adversaries alike, ever another illusion standing between him and his foes. For those who do not know he is an illusionist (and, indeed, he does not introduce himself as such), Lusinga is a weaver of wonders and nightmares, unfurling magic of every imaginable variety, reality warping about him in dreadful mien. Beyond theatricality, Lusinga’s personality is thin. Though a talented illusionist, Spark is better at improvisation than storycraft. Where Lusinga must interact more intimately with a person than deception or theatrics can carry him, it is with Spark’s own words and personality that he speaks. Thankfully for Spark, the idea of the larger-than-life, egotistical Lusinga la Veritas being a snarky little shit when his face isn’t on is entirely believable.

Other Notes

Spark, shine-obsessed little gremlin that she is, is ever bedecked in a collection of impossibly tiny, delicate jewelery. From the miniscule pearls woven into her dress to the hair-thin bangles on her arms, she is a showcase of some of the finest craftsmanship in all the planes, by dint of the sheer miniscule scale of these delicate creations. All of it is created by a friend of hers within the guild, who is himself eager to test his jewelcraft against the absurd restrictions presented by her tiny frame. The result, a doll-sized girl wearing finery that would embarass most queens, is the finest advertisement to his skills he could ask for. The small fortune Spark has paid him in exchange is nice, too.

In addition to her richly-appointed self, Spark has also gathered a nest of shiny baubles, mostly pilfered from noble treasuries and jewellery boxes, though a few belongings formerly owned by Realmwardens have made there way inside as well. Nestled at the center of this vast hoard is her bed, a dizzingly magnificent four-poster with silk sheets and every luxury appointment imaginable. The entire collection is contained in a small chest that serves as her (conveniently portable) quarters. Lusinga is most often tasked with transporting it from realm to realm, though Spark is ever swift to foist the duty unto a more muscular party member.

Origin World

Spark's knowledge of her home world is largely second-hand. As for what she knows herself: Spark was born into the Faewyld, a twisting maelstrom of chaotic magical energies. Said maelstrom, by the principle of infinite monkeys and infinite typewriters, occasionally gave birth to ordered (or, at least, more ordered) pockets of recognisable reality. These pockets were home to the fey, creatures birthed of the chaos. Due to a confluence of energies and wills, these pockets were influenced by sentient minds outside of the Faewyld in their shaping, giving birth to creatures from the fictions of those distant minds. Fairies were most common, as well as their kindred in brownies, gremlins, and other small, cute, mischevious creatures. Monsters, of the sort that might devour up a misbehaving child, were next most common.

The terrain in these pockets was similarly shaped by stories. While the creatures were freed of the constraints of their fictional origin and personality from the moment of their birth onwards, the settings in which they dwelt would only shift to the extent that their inhabitants altered them (as a location is, in most instances, not a thinking, breathing thing).

The pockets of the wyld were temporary, though generally not fleeting. They would exist for a few years or decades, until the stories that birthed them faded from popular telling or became so warped from their original form that they were ripe to birth a new pocket entirely. Upon crossing this threshold the pocket would decay, eventually collapsing. Its inhabitants, if the collapse came suddenly, might be consumed, vanishing back into the moil. Normally, though, they would have time to depart, striking out into the writing worldscape of the Faewyld to find a new home in another pocket, or perhaps to forge a precarious keepspace within the chaos.

These were all things of which Spark heard from other fey in the years following her birth. She never experienced the collapse of her home story, however, as one day she alighted upon a tree branch only to find herself, quite abruptly, standing on a fencepost, looking up at a distant mountain peak.

In the uncountable decades since her first Gatewalk, Spark has at times attempted to return to her home. She has managed to visit the places that birthed the stories she knew, grim places of concrete and metal and glass, and a world long since scoured of green. She did not stay long, and found herself entirely unsurprised that a world so terrible would dream of soft greens and bright little winged girls, and monsters that would eat you but at least know you as flesh, not as a malfunctioning cog.

Despite her best efforts, however, she has never been able to return to the Faewyld. Perhaps, in its chaos, it elludes her skill as a Gatewalker. Perhaps it is sealed off. Perhaps, as that grim, grey world has gotten ever darker, the light of stories has faded, and her home along with it. She does not know, and has chosen not to learn... at least until she can see the truth for herself.

Party Role

Spark is a support character, though a weird one. She has abilities that directly benefit her allies (blur and other defensive figments, mage feint), but she is better used as a distraction. A good illusionist can turn a battlefield into a godsdamned nightmare of false targets. Combined with the shadowstuff abilities of fey adept, it creates a very fun environment where, while it’s all well and good to be quite sure all these creatures are illusions, you did just see your buddy get bitten in half by that illusory dragon.

Spark is capable of filling most roles to an underwhelming but acceptable extent, using her shadow abilities to dip into whichever sphere might be required when simple deception does not perform sufficiently. She has notable weaknesses, being a poor choice at single-target damage or as a healer, and generally performs better outside of her battlefield control role when she is able to set up before combat begins than she does reacting to an unexpected situation. She is at her best in minion control; dealing large amounts of damage to weak, numerous enemies, or otherwise limiting their mobility and actions.

Out of combat, Spark is an excellent inflitrator, spy, or disruptor, and can make an acceptable assassin, particularly against soft targets. She is a tiny illusionist with solid deception and a huge stealth score that, even when she isn’t literally invisible, makes her the next best thing, plus she has a solid sleight of hand and a proclivity for pilfering. If what you need is a small item (or a medium-to-large item that can be transported by an illusory conjuration without raising too many questions), she’s your girl. Unlike in combat, her utility outside of her specialised role is extremely limited.

Tiny (4 RP)
Tiny creatures gain a +2 size bonus to Dexterity and a –2 size penalty to Strength. Tiny races gain a +2 size bonus to their AC, a +2 size bonus on attack rolls, a –2 penalty on combat maneuver checks and to their CMD, and a +8 size bonus on Stealth checks. Tiny characters take up a space of 2-1/2 feet by 2-1/2 feet, so up to four of these characters can fit into a single square. Tiny races typically have a natural reach of 0 feet, meaning they can’t reach into adjacent squares. They must enter an opponent’s square to attack it in melee. This provokes an attack of opportunity from the opponent. Since they have no natural reach, they do not threaten the squares around them. Other creatures can move through those squares without provoking attacks of opportunity. Tiny creatures typically cannot flank an enemy.

Casting Tradition

Fey Magic (Inherent)

Spark is a fundamentally magical creature, able to weave illusions as naturally as breathing. However, that ease is contrasted by a fundamental weakness: She's a tiny, fragile, and above all distractable fairy. A good thwack can leave her dazed and unable to focus, making her unable to conjure anything more compelling than a party trick. Her magic has other limits: Iron-based armour interferes with her fey arts, causing a fuzz in her illusions that makes them easier to percieve. Lastly, bordering bewteen personal failing and magical requirement, she demands lush finery to wear and a fine place in which to rest. If denied her usual attire and sleeping quarters, she is known to sulk. It is adorable.

As a fan of all things fey, the fey applications for this game are spoiling me. I like the duality of Spark/Lusinga la Veritas quite a bit and her very Old World fey proclivities are endearing to me. I will be adding her to the list of a half-dozen or so applications that I have yet to finish deconstructing and reviewing.

That's what I was going for! Glad you like it.

I have a bias towards awful little gremling-creatures, which fey are a natural fit for, particularly the Skittery Little Guy variety common in folklore. A delightful mix of helpful spirit and mischevious (or vengeful) prankster, usually combined in a single tiny body. That, plus I really like the idea of magic being the result of some byproduct of mortal thought, particularly stories (see: Gunnerkrigg Court). Plus, fey are ever associated with illusion, which is my favourite school of magic. It's the only school whose potency is dictated not by level, but by imagination, ohoho!

Gunnerkrigg Court, good reference!! I've been following it for ages (but I have no idea whether it's widely popular or not).

You have good tastes (i.e. what we say when people have the same tastes as ourself 😆).

Now to hypnotize Saberfan with our fey powers so they select two illusionists for the party. 😜

I have two modifications I need to make!

The first is that, after some more Spheres reading, I've determined that Spark should be a Sidhe Invoker, rather than a vanilla Fey Adept. It better lends itself to her "cutesy but eldritch fairytale creature" vibe, with the warping of reality and all. It also leans into my mechanical goals for the character, those being never dealing damage through means other than illusions, which is a very funny and very stupid idea and therefore mandatory.

The other is that I'm going to delve into how the heck companions work in the Conjuration sphere and build a Standard la Veritas statblock as constructed within the Fey Adept's Create Reality: Companion ability, so you can at least know the kind of Dude he's likely to be. One conversion is essentially instant, other than modifying which features Spark gets, the other will take a bit.

EDIT: And I have now done both things. The build on la Veritas is admitedly super sloppy, but the fun thing about an illusion companion is that I can just build him differently the next time I create him, iffin that becomes a problem. His only goal is to be extremely annoying to hit in melee combat, with some added "save Spark's fairy ass" utility thrown in.

Thank you for letting me know of those changes. I will make a note of them on my list.

I have an interesting question that I would like to pose to you: does Lusinga la Veritas have any inkling that he isn't real? Or is he an accurate enough living illusion that he truly does believe himself to be a master illusionist and Spark nothing more than a beloved sidekick of his?

I had intended that Lusinga is entirely fictional, a puppet to support a role that Spark plays. Considering her confluence of talents, and the implications of Create Reality...

Gosh, I do not know and you are causing me an existential crisis. What if we are all illusions piloted by fey, each trying to convince all of the other humans that they are totally a person and not a small insect, and doing it so well that they've forgotten they aren't real?

I don't think there's a concrete answer. It might be something worth exploring if Spark gets accepted, particularly as she grows more powerful. Looking at the mechanics of how Fey Adept works... I think, when she actually creates him, Lusinga la Veritas truly believes that he is a master illusionist and Spark his petite, tricksome fairy familiar, and that the illusions she weaves are in fact woven by him. The illusion she weaves is the reality she creates, after all. But... gosh, what a dreadful existential nightmare of a character drama hook that is, huh? The unreality-weaver is himself forced to question his own existence.

Well, you've given me something to chew on, for sure. Something to keep my mind busy until applications close.

One minor change: Clarified that Spark's casting ability was Charisma. Probably not a necessary clarification, but nevertheless.

EDIT: It just occurred to me that I may have misinterpreted what you meant by having a completed statblock, and rather than a finished, linked-to character sheet, you wanted (or also wanted) a breakdown of their mechanics on this page.

Ah well, too late for that now.

EDIT2: I did add their basic statblocks for the sake of reference, anyway.

@Saberfan Could I ask to make some major alterations to my build? I have been trying to find a place to fit a level of Eliciter in the post-9th-level region in order to gain the +2 bonus from Persuasive to Illusion DCs via Implausible Deniability. However, Mind (for which Eliciter gets a single free talent) has very limited utility for Spark. She is an illusionist. Her only interest in psychic powers is in making her illusions even more convincing.

After mulling about this for several days, I've determined that the best place to put Eliciter is at 1st level, possibly along with the Empathic Duelist archetype so that Spark can take a martial tradition. At that point, the order of the build will have changed so significantly that I'd like to ask to make some other changes (shown below).

So, would you be willing to
A) Let me modify my build, including taking Eliciter at 1st level.
B) Let me take Eliciter at a later level, but change the Mind talent to an Illusion one.

After mulling about this for several days, I've determined that the best place to put Eliciter is at 1st level, along with the Empathic Duelist talent so that Spark can take a martial tradition.

You aren't fundamentally changing your character's basic concept or party role, so I'll allow you to change it now. Most of the changes you have made are more tweaks to how you go about expressing those things. Also, I appreciate the extra effort you put into showing what changes you would make and where since it made looking over things much easier.
