Dalin Ghillison (Barbarian, 5th level)

AC: 16 | HP: (70+5=75)/70 | Rages: 3/3  | Passive Perception: 12

It was worse. Whatever Dalin had thought it would be, it was hundred fold worse than that. While travelling many roads with goods, criss-crossing the land to avoid a "boring" life back home, her imagination had not been prepared for this.

Her gut wrenched in response to the horrible scene that played before her. She fought for control, but as she spoke, her voice was already echoing with a beastial undertone. She looked to Jozelle. "I don't know you well, but I count you as friend... I will help you bring him down if I can."

She looked from Ren to Alban, her hazel eyes darkening. The bear was surging forth and all Dalin's fears were being replaced with its cold anger. The dwarf was still there though and she continued. "I hear his words to his army and I understand. He's trying establish control in Hethon.. the area on this side of the portal... it seems he feels the need to defend it. Perhaps it can be closed."

"My words" | 'My thoughts' | My actions

Ren's stomach churned at the stench of sulfur, and for just a brief moment, she faltered. What could she, with all of the mistakes she had made in her life, possibly hope to accomplish here? Quickly, she shut the thought down. She might not be much and she might be losing an important part of herself, but she was all these people had, and she was here. Mosheach would expect her to do what she could and he would aid her against the forces of Hassatan. She had to believe that. She had to yield herself as the god's instrument without regard for what this fight might cost her.

She first called on her god for additional aid. "Mosheach, custodite iustum!" She pointed then to each of her companions and all those fighting on behalf of Hethton who were within visual range. A group of white-winged spectral planetars wielding swords of golden light appeared around Ren out to a distance of 15 feet, their demeanors fierce despite their completely hairless bodies and blue-green skin.

At Jozelle's words, she replied, "I will move with you. My guardians offer a degree of aid out to 15 feet around me. They will slow the enemy down and with any luck blast a few of them with holy radiance as well. I will also make Vadim King completely vulnerable to one attack once the fighting officially starts. Whether you take advantage of that or one of the rest of us does, I care not; we just need to make that one attack count."

OoC

Ren just cast Spirit Guardians. Those she pointed at are unaffected the spell.

  • Light Crossbow +4 to hit for [1d8+2] piercing damage | Loading, Two-handed, 80/320

  • Channel Divinity: Path to the Grave You can use Channel Divinity as an action to curse one creature you can see within 30 ft. of you until the end of your next turn. The next time you or an ally of yours hits the cursed creature with an attack, the creature has vulnerability to all of that attack’s damage, and then the curse ends.

  • Channel Divinity: Turn Undead As an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring the undead. Each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can’t willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can’t take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there’s nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.

  • Eyes of the Grave At 1st level, you gain the ability to occasionally sense the presence of the undead, whose existence is an insult to the natural cycle of life. As an action, you can open your awareness to magically detect undead. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any undead within 60 feet of you that isn’t behind total cover and that isn’t protected from divination magic. This sense doesn’t tell you anything about a creature’s capabilities or identity. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

  • Destroy Undead Starting at 5th level, when an undead of CR 1/2 or lower fails its saving throw against your Turn Undead feature, the creature is instantly destroyed.

  • 3 weeks later...

The battle for Hethton grew in pitch and more and more soldiers of the infernal plane swarmed through the portal. Ren’s spirit guardians spread out around her, bringing light to the darkness and some small measure of hope. Dalin’s axe shone in the light of those guardians, but did its edge glow with its own inner brightness?

Alban’s shadows flowed around him, a counterpoint to Ren’s light, but sometimes the darkness must be beat back by its own. Jozelle seemed to dance even when she stood still, movement and grace and danger captured in a still life.

Another legion of hellish soldiers was breaching the portal now, creatures of greater size and ferocity than the first wave of imps. They were bound in gore-stained chains that seemed to flow over them and through them, a part of them as much as their limbs were. Behind them rode a greater devil still, astride a nightmare steed with cavernous flames for eyes and clad in fire blackened armor. A banner of black and silver and crimson beat the wind at his back, and on its face the cruel symbol they’d seen below in the caves.

Vadim flew next to this general, speaking to him in hurried tones above the din. The companions could not hear them, and when Vadim was done speaking he took wing and flew back into the portal, soon disappearing from sight. But the portal remained open. At the base of the hill the battle grew in intensity, the Hethton guard now understanding the stakes were not just their lives but their souls. The Captain’s men fought valiantly, and with an inner strength that inspired the companions. Without them, the guard would’ve been overrun in no time. Yet, it did not take a military strategist to see that unless something were to change, and change soon, the bravery of the Captain’s men would not be enough to carry the day.

Jozelle - Human (Rogue/Monk)

spacer.png

AC: 16 | HP: 39/39 | Initiative: +9 | Passive Perception: 13

Jozelle looks for the openings, the opportunities to go around the battle. She is no soldier trained for war. Not that there is no overlap with her own profession, but she cannot fight a dozen or more foes and hope to prevail. No, she kills men... now devils... one at a time.

"Be rest assured, good Lord Stuart. Should Hethton survive this, none will doubt your word here." Few had believed their claims, but now they are all too real.

"I know the ebb and flow of this town, where to move of us around the chaos." Indeed, she did spend the first part of their time in Hethton walking the town streets, learning the ins and outs. Now it is clear why. Part of it was getting a sense of he community. Another part very much was to know potential escape routes. "Shall we?" Jozelle takes but a single step, offering one last soft, almost pitying look at the men who bravely fought the terrors of another plane, and who just as bravely were falling.

Dalien

Dalin Ghillison (Barbarian, 5th level)

AC: 16 | HP: (70+5=75)/70 | Rages: 3/3  | Passive Perception: 12

Dalin was not a warrior. She fought, with her borrowed axe, simply because there was no longer a choice. The battlefield was not only around her but in her gut as well. The giant white bear burned cold fury, seeking release, and the dwarf internally battled to shove it down, feeling she had to wait for the "right" moment. She averted her eyes from the creature with blackened armor and eyes of bonfire, knowing that if she looked at it for too long, the bear would not be stilled.

As Jozelle suggested leaving, she managed a response. "Where do we go... to follow Vadim? The door must be closed... there must be a way. If not, then the loss will go beyond these people, beyond this town."

If someone had asked her the day before, if she'd willing face and potentially pass through a portal to Haasatan, she would have laughed and made a joke. But, that was when there was a choice.

The devil that was Vadim King ignored his gathering power and departed behind whatever spiked monstrosity now breached the portal. It was clear that if the tide was not stemmed soon, Hethton would be lost. Yet all such thought of future vindication - and even the same glory and respect enjoyed by the late Captain - was lost amidst the anger that cooled and coalesced inside him. He'd had the creature that tricked and used him, had beaten him, in his sights. He would not lose them again. Besides, Dalin was right. Without a way to close the portal, there would be no stemming this tide of blood and fire. "Indeed we must," he ground out in reply, "please do lead us in this dance Jozelle. The amulet must be the key." It had to be. He had no other hope.

So he dove into the melee, the clash of metal and blood, the smell of sweat and brimstone so alien to his finery. It was others that slipped and died in the mud - he was meant for greater things. He let his focus narrow on the one who wronged him, to preserve his sanity.

  • 2 weeks later...

In later years, when this day was reflected upon, it would be said that among the strange occurrences that flooded the battle of Hethton, the weirdest had to be, at least for the vaunted companions, the sudden and total change in the soundscape when they passed through the wavering portal. The cacophony of war went silent and in it’s place the rumbling of distant volcanic activity combined with the eerie quiet of the heat-blasted land; the thick bubbling of molten lava as streams of it flowed sluggishly across the byways; the singular call of an alien bird, or something else like a bird. Sweat broke out on their brows almost immediately, and the stench of sulphur assaulted their nostrils. The ground beneath their boots cracked as if they trod upon the remains of last night’s campfire, a few smoldering coals wheezing into a semblance of life once again. From the vibrant palette of mountainous autumn their eyes adjusted slowly to the dull reds, angry oranges, ashy greys, and coal blacks of this place. But the strangest thing, they would all agree, was how the sound changed as surely as it was sudden.

Looking back through the portal, they could swear they saw a shimmering light surrounding a strange host clashing in battle with the devils who sought to take Hethton. At the center of this new melee strode a mighty figure, outlined in shining silver light, that had they been put to the question they all would have sworn bore the likeness of the Captain, through they knew it could not be he. But they turned away from this puzzling, if inspiring, sight for their quarry was not waiting on them. They had to find Vadim. They had to pick up his trail in this infernal land. They clung to the hope that the portal would remain steady, but in order to find Vadim they would have to leave its feeling of relative safety. He lay…beyond.

Jozelle - Human (Rogue/Monk)

spacer.png

AC: 16 | HP: 39/39 | Initiative: +9 | Passive Perception: 13

Jozelle leads the group around the battle, feeling the twists and turns of the streets and alleys like the back or her hand. It's how she's survived. To kill is one thing, to leave in haste, swiftly, quietly, effectively... that too is required. Only this time, they are not fleeing, but moving forward.

She hesitates slightly, but only for a moment, before she steps into the portal, making room for the others. It's surprising that it's only hot, for she feared that the very air would be poison, the earth would immediately try to swallow them up. It's a small comfort that they can at least walk across this corrupted land.

"I've led us this far. Who knows Vadim's steps? Who believes they can walk his path, can feel his very being?" She finds a bit of protection behind her words, looking to see who is confident in tracking Vadim, for she is not.

Dalien

Dalin Ghillison (Barbarian, 5th level)

AC: 14 | HP: (70+5=75)/70 | Rages: 3/3  | Passive Perception: 12

Despite her gift for maps and ability to remember a town after walking it once, Dalin lingered at the end of the group as Jozelle's deft steps drew them back to the portal. Perhaps she was protecting their exit from the battle or perhaps... perhaps she was struggling more than she let on.

As the distance from the battle increased, the dwarf slid her shield onto her back and reached her now free hand up to the bedroll on her pack. Bonnie wiggled herself free of the padded folds and skittered into her hand. A gentle thumb began rhythmically patting the mouse's head. Dalin's low rumbling mutters could be heard and by the time they reached the portal, she was freely talking, in bear-like growls, to her wee friend. Only Cordelia had known that Bonnie's presence helped Dalin remain calm. Perhaps the others would now too.

At the portal, Dalin brought the mouse up to eye level, exchanging several puffing growls with the creature's tiny squeaks. Dalin shrugged and nodded, then nuzzled the mouse with her nose before lifting her back to her bedroll. The mouse scrambled back, deep into the layers. To her companions, she said. "She understands danger, knows we might not come back, but wants to stay... to stay with me. No accounting for taste... I guess." That the dwarf could even try to joke at this time, indicated how much calmer she felt.

Dalin held her breath as she stepped through the portal. The assault of heat and sulfur was an assault that took several moments to shake. "Teekond, protect us. Of all the roads, I never thought to travel this one."

Gazing at the ground, vaguely looking for evidence of the army that had passed, she responded to Jozelle, "I don't know that my skills will be much help... so many have passed and wasn't he flying? But, we could probably go in the direction they were coming from, when we first saw them from the other side." The dwarf waved a thick hand forward.

Looking over to Ren and Alban, "Unless... one of you has magicks that could help find him?"

Alban followed Jozelle's steps precisely through the melee, displaying surprising aptitude for such movements given certain assumptions about his noble background. Passing through the portal he stumbled, briefly, at the silence, but did not look back. His anger and his pride, his need to quench this devil driving him onward. The fine ash and volcanic stone crunched and squeaked beneath his boots, little puffs in the otherwise still air quickly dusting them a monochrome grey, matching eyes that scanned the horizon for any sign of the winged fiend. So self-absorbed he was that it takes him a few moments to notice the others talking, none taking the lead. "Hm?" he murmured, distracted. "No... The shadows obscure rather than reveal, and whilst ice may freeze water in time there is precious little of each here," he replied absentmindedly, bent upon his revenge. "Alien and foul as this realm may be, it seems land still. You've led, I believe, more than one caravan through the wilderness Dalin - do not balk because we have strode wilder still. It is too late for that." His voice is low despite its intense undercurrent, as if unwilling to disturb the heavy silence that blankets the area with sounds of life.

Dalin felt encouraged by Alban’s words and, once her nerves came under control, noticed that there were recognizable signs. Whilst Vadim now flew and so left no mark of his passage, an army had recently come through here. Boot prints in the ash and clay resolved in her vision as if they had not been there a moment before. They led over a blackened hill that was colored with tiny rivulets of lava. If that then was from whence the army had come, perhaps it was to where Vadim had returned.

In the distance, a dull roar sounded and when they looked up they saw one the fiery mountains belching smoke and lava into the air. The sulfurous odor intensified and they were reminded that here, even the land might slay what devils failed to find. They needed to take care.

As they moved off in direction of the legion Alban drew forth a pale handkerchief to cover his nose and mouth against the smell, embroidered in the corner with a simple monogram. The heat was stifling as they grew closer to the molten rock, Alban sweating beneath his long robe. The Northern climes were mild at best, and his wardrobe largely reflected that. He wished he'd bought a waterskin. Still he strode after the dwarf, each step sliding a little back as they climbed the gravelly hill - a bleak mirror of his own inner journey, each step hard-won. If the pattern continued, it would be a tumble down the far side back to where he started, as when Cordelia fled.

Dalien

Dalin Ghillison (Barbarian, 5th level)

AC: 14 | HP: (70+5=75)/70 | Rages: 3/3  | Passive Perception: 12

The path was clear. An army can't help but leave a trail and if that's all that had to go on, then that's what they'd follow. Fighting against reality, Dalin thought to herself. It's just like tracking a herd of caribou. No more, no less. Prints. Some heavy, some light.

Nothing wrong here.

Only the observant would notice that her eyes rarely lifted from the ground. Occassionaly, her gaze would scurry towards her companions. It was hard to say if it was the habit of escort or if, for her own needs, she wanted to make sure they were still there.

She hefted the pack on her back. It was light, but she knew it defied its weight. She had enough for a couple of days, if she fed them all. She pulled free a hunting crossbow and readied it. She didn't think there'd be ptarmigan for supper, but at least she'd have something to do if something, anything, appeared amid the blackened rocks of the terrain.

The trail was remarkably easy for Dalin to follow; armies were not subtle marchers. But it did go on and on. The temperature made the hunt almost unbearable and by the time the infernal light faded into twilight (though without a sun, they wondered from whence the light came and to where it went), they were almost glad because the temperature dropped just enough to make breathing seem like not such a chore. The rocky, blasted ground did not provide much hope for a comfortable place to sit or lie, but that was the least of their concerns. They were exposed here; there was no cover and the lifeless, baked land stretched on towards the mountains of fire in the distance. Any creature passing by for miles would be able to spot them. By the time what passed for night had fallen, they did not know what was best.

Jozelle - Human (Rogue/Monk)

spacer.png

AC: 16 | HP: 39/39 | Initiative: +9 | Passive Perception: 13

Jozelle says very little. Though he expression remains calm and collected, no amount of mental fortitude or dissonance can keep the body from showing signs of weakness. Her her is far messier, her pale skin flush red from the heat. It is a good thing she travels light, else she may not have been able to keep up.

Finally she speaks

"That Vadim retreats in their moment of victory gives hope that following him matters. That he eludes us is... frustrating." The poetic language ends with the last word.

"Do we rest? Do we press on?"
