Episode 19 - A New Year

Nicoale didn't once glance aside at Fen only because she didn't have to. Her semblance let her keep a close watch on Fen while they piled into the robot booth. It was hard to imagine what was going through her head. Was she thinking about what would happen after they succeeded? Or was she nervous for the moment? Nicoale was still unsettled at idea that maybe her parents could be saved. Would-

No. No, best not even think about it. Not now. What they were doing was already disturbing enough. Best to stay focused on the mission. Once they arrived, Nicoale would need to scout the battlefield from afar, pick the right time for the team to join the fight.

The doors opened to a fierce battle already in progress.

... Or not.

Nicoale shook it off. They were already here. She had to stay on mission.

So Nicoale darted out the door, already aiming a railgun-mode-caladbolg at the nearest nevermore. She couldn't fly like her teammates, but neither could a Nevermore if a well-placed shot broke a wing. So as she moved, she aimed careful. Counted the timing on the wingstroke. Took her shots, then moved for cover. Just like she'd drilled.

Team FLNS (PC Results and Ally Turn):

Yes! I met Miss Fen and Miss Lin during last year's Vehicle Fair! Delores answered Sorin.

Ah! Yes! I can do that! She replied as he launched into battle. And yeah, not gonna lie the Fable brothers seemed kinda sorta a little bit completely and utterly befuddled and flabbergasted by the the arrival of Sudden Box of Hunters but look were they going to complain? No. No they were freaking not. Sorin's Plant Dust hit the Nevermore, and started growing into creeping, entangling vines, but it only slowed the enormous Grimm down briefly before it tore free with a single flap of its massive wings, scattering bits of vines all over.

But in the time that took, back inside Delores, about a score of laser guns sufficiently enormous and glowy to even dwarf the VBMFG came descending from the ceiling and oriented on the door, charging up to fire-!

...And then Chapi did what Chapi does, and the Fable brothers were safe inside. Unfortunately they were also kinda blocking Delores's line of fire. Fiddlesticks!

(It...it didn't actually matter. The Nevermores were all in the air. Delores wouldn't have had a good firing angle to any of them. Honestly she's not that kind of plot device.)

While Fen's approach was utterly silent, the arrival of Delores had drawn more than just the eyes of the Fable brothers, and the Nevermore caught sight of her approach. It moved as she rushed it, just managing to keep her from placing her weapon against it with a hard wingbeat that sent it it dodging right...into Nicoale's gattling gun fire. Caladbolg's spray of bullets tore into its wing, injuring it badly enough that it went crashing to the ground, landing with a resounding thud that was almost a third as loud as the sounds of the heavy footfalls growing steadily more distant. It didn't start evaporating, but at least for the moment it wasn't moving around so much either.

The Fable brothers didn't exactly relax, given that you know they had no idea what was going on and also the safety they had been deposited into was kinda pointing half an Atlesian Battlecruiser's worth of very high-tech looking laser weapons at them and/or in their general direction. Fred and Francis moved to get between their younger brothers and the potential threats, Francis stepping between the group of them and the doorway, Fred moving further in to put himself in the path of the guns, both of them with weapons raised in ready guard.

Oh! I am very sorry! Do not worry, Innocent Faunus! You are perfectly safe here! Please step away from the doors, and if any of the Giant Bird Monsters tries to get in I will be happy to vaporize it for you! :-D

Now, for the most part, the Fable brothers were currently sufficiently discombobulated that they weren't offering much argument, in the face of Chapi's orders to stay put.

But Fadi Fable had the sharpest senses of all of his brothers. There hadn't really been any time for most of them to take in all that much about their rescuers. And there hadn't been all that much time for him either. But there had been enough time for him to catch sight of the tiny form of a bird faunus with some pretty familiar features. "No! I think Fen's out there!" he said, and before any of the others could challenge that statement on the platform of it being ludicrously impossible, he was already charging back out the door and firing his sniper rifle at the Nevermore closest to the Huntress he had (somewhat mistakenly, but in a much more important sense not) identified as his baby sister.

His twin brothers didn't bother even considering questioning him, they just charged out beside him, Fang firing his longbow at the same target, although Fadi was kinda catching his breath from the recent exchange and didn't quite manage to get a shot of his own off yet.

"Great Scott..." Brown murmured as he appeared to behold the battlefield. It's like sure he knew the basics of what had gone down here but seeing it was still another matter, that was rather a lot of Nevermores. He drew out his greataxe, shifting it to its own gattling gun mode and firing a spray of bullets at the kinda centrally-located Nevermore...except for the part where the bullets would actually impact the one Nicoale had injured, as if he had fired them at that one in the first place even though he clearly hadn't.

And that wasn't all. Chapi, Nicoale, and Fen (and the Fable triplets) would get an odd sense of deja-vu and hear the words "...ttocS taerG" echo in their ears, as Time began to bend around them, altering probabilities as Brown began warping them through possible paths to improbable futures - namely those where the Nevermores' attacks failed most catastrophically. Doctor Brown's Semblance may have offered some limited applications for altering the present from the past.

It was a whole different beast when it came to altering the future from the present.  (Or, well, the subjective future from the subjective present, as the case may be.)

Fable Brothers:

Most of them aren't taking combat actions. Fred and Francis are Deflecting for all of them with Band of Brothers.

However, Fadi, Falk, and Fang are ignoring Chapi's orders and come out. Falk is Dazed this turn so the movement is all he gets, but Fang Aids Fadi and Fadi attacks Nevermore 4 with Instant Aim, Power Attacking for the full Aid bonus. On a hit, Resistance DC 21+Aid-Perception vs. Damage.
Fang Aid (+5 for Teamwork) +5

Fadi Attack (DC 22) Miss

Nevermore 4 Resistance

Doctor Brown:
Free: Reconfigure Huntsman. 12 points to Combat Training, 12 points to Ranged Combat Training, 12 points to Gattling Gun Mode (Damage gains Multiattack), 12 points to Defensive Combat Training, 12 points to Teacher's Oversight, 24 points to Time Bender (foregoing Redirect).
Move: Agile Feint Nevermore 6.
Standard: Attack Nevermore 6 with Gattling Gun Mode.

On a hit, Resistance DC 27+Multiattack vs. [Physical] [Ballistic] Damage. Sorin's too far away but all other allies on the outside of Delores are Deflected with Reflect and Secondary Effect. Note that since Brown is a PL higher than you guys you roll this Deflect at +1 from your base Defense.
Dr. Brown Mobility (halved for move action)

Nevermore 6 Opposed Mobility (-5 for Disabled) Just makes it

Doctor Brown Attack (DC 22) Hits with +2 Multiattack anyway

Nevermore 6 Resistance (-5 for Disabled, -1 for Bruise) DESTROYED! There Nicoale, you finally got to watch a Professor take out a Grimm, on-screen and everything. Happy? 😛

Enemy turn to come.

Robin

However feigned your cry of defiance may have been, your shotgun blast took it at face value, leading Chro's hasted dodge and slamming him full in the chest, taking a chunk out of his Aura and knocking him off the wall, forcing him to catch his balance as he landed unexpectedly on the ground.

"No? Well that's funny. Because I was terrified of you."

LOL what?

"Back when we met before, I mean. And you started going on like a lunatic about us working with some guy's dad or something. What was up with that, by the way? Not important. Legit thought you were gonna kill us all there when you started shooting. I mean, that's why we came here in the first place, you know. We saw you in the tournament. Imagine my surprise when I saw my old buddy Robin had become a Huntsman powerful enough to practically sleepwalk his way through the Vytal Tournament, to say nothing for what you did in the aftermath. And it's not like you were facing chumps, either. All three of your teammates got taken out at one point or another, and you were practically untouched."

"The world's been getting more dangerous, you know? Vacuo too. I thought maybe you'd be able to protect us."

He kinda gestured down at himself. "Maybe if you had, this wouldn't have happened."

Chro didn't press his attack as he spoke. He sounded sincere. Was he right? Was it true? Was this all your fault? If you had just forgiven him when he asked, would your former gang not have been turned into monsters? Would Solstice and Jack be safe?

...Somewhere in the back of your mind, your Semblance was blaring a Warning...

Mechanics

Chro:
Free: Reconfigure Vampire. 12 points to Projection, 24 points to Gaze, 12 points to Voice of the Crowd, 24 points to Fast Healing, 12 points to Hasted Dodge.
Move: Dazed.
Standard: Attack Robin with Voice of the Crowd, Accurate Attacking for 2. On a hit, Resistance DC 20+Penetrating vs. [Sensory/Mental] [Control] Entranced/Compelled/Controlled Affliction. The initial order is to stop fighting. (For the record this effect isn't Subtle or Insidious or anything, so if Robin avoids or resists it he'll know a mind-controlling power was involved, but just as a matter of descriptors at least until Chro starts pushing harder if he's affected it feels in the moment like natural persuasion.) What impact, if any, his words have on Robin aside from being a vehicle for delivering his power is up to you. Chro is also Deflected.
Chro Attack (DC 24) Hit

Robin is on turn.

Team RACL (PC Results and Ally Turn)

Lapis caught another pair of vampires in his gravitic threads, although not quite as tightly as before. Still enough to keep them from escaping the gravity well and slow them down substantially while within it. Rhys once again had little trouble binding a vampire in his chains, the crushing pressure wearing at the integrity of their Aura, but vampires evidently remained awkward enough weapons that with their hasted speed his secondary target was able to dodge aside. This was the problem with Wulf focusing so much on single combat against her. Did not offer enough opportunity to practice hitting enemies with other enemies. I bet if DMDST had been Haven professors instead of brainwashed traitors they wouldn't have made that mistake...

Anya sprang forward, up over the vampires and planting her hands on Rhys's hand as a platform, basically proceeded to do some Aerial Combat Breakdancing on the vampires, because RWBY characters can do that sort of thing, her heavy boots whipping back and forth to clock as many of them as she could reach. Each hit would come with a sort of wavering thwacking sound as the vibrations of impact were intensified and sent rippling disharmonously through the targets' bodies, and even the swooshing sounds of her legs moving through the air had a strange echoing timbre as she guided the sound like a striking serpent through the ranks of the more distant vampires. And then with a handspring off of Rhys's head she'd land back in her prior position.

Nick did not in fact fire another rocket at his feet now that the vampires had closed. Whether this was because he had been mostly joking, because he was concerned that if he did that RACL's hypothesized "weaken all who oppose you" power might flag him as a threat and he'd never drop another vampire again, or because Lapis had successfully glared some sense into him was hard to say. But he shifted the North Pole back into its staff form and started whipping it through a flurry of strikes at the vampire who had engaged him, channeling his Semblance through it so each hit carried with it a rush of jolliness. It would impair the vampire's fighting ability (cheerfulness wasn't exactly helpful to paying attention to combat, after all), but I'll be honest mostly he did it because the thought of getting a freaking vampire high on Christmas cheer was just hilarious.

Ben's lightning bolts were basically fine for being surrounded by enemies though; he charged another bolt through his bayonet, leaped out of the press, stabbed the nearest active vampire, and sent another lightning bolt chaining through the ranks of those that had surrounded he and Rhys.

Mechanics

Anya:
Free: Reconfigure Huntress. She's going offensive this round. 11 points to Martial Training, 11 points to Diamond Dust (Multiattack), 22 points to Vibrato, 11 points to Cascade Failure (base Weaken), 11 points to Cascade Failure (Shapeable Area). Since the vamps turned off their Auditory Concealment I figure she can turn off her hearing enhancement this round, she can always reactivate it next turn if they reactive theirs.
Move: Into J9, above Rhys.
Standard: Attack the vampires with Cascade Failure. They all get attacked by the Shapeable Weaken. The Damage she'll Multiattack for 5 against Vampires 9,10, 11, 13, and 14. So her attack roll functions as five lower for the Damage, but their Evasion doesn't help against that (and it has Perception). She has Accurate Hearing so their currently-only-Visual Concealment does nothing either way. On a hit (DC 20@-5/22), Resistance DC 26-Perception vs. Damage and Resistance DC 21 vs. Weaken Resistance. Will roll Deflects and Resistance for those hit in the OOC since lots of targets.
Anya Attack vs. V4 Hit (only targeted by Weaken)

Anya Attack vs. V7 Miss

Anya Attack vs. V9 Hit

Anya Attack vs. V10 DC 16 Damage

Anya Attack vs. V11 (DC 10) Hit, auto-crit on the Damage...oh Area attacks don't crit now that answers my Finishing Attack question, duh.

Anya Attack vs. V12 (DC 15/17) Hit (only targeted by Weaken)

Anya Attack vs. V13 Crit

Anya Attack vs. V14 DC 21 Damage

Move-by Action: Back to prior position.
End of Turn: Secondary Effect triggers. Allies are Deflected again.

Nick:
Free: Reconfigure Huntsman. 11 points to Combat Training, 11 points to Induce Jolliness, 22 points to Freezing Flurry (the Multiattack for both Damage and Affliction), 11 points to Atlesian Battletech (Secondary Effect).
Move: If V14 is down he'll move so he can target someone else I guess.
Standard: Attack V14 with Not-so-Freezing Flurry, Accurate Attacking for 5. On a hit, Resistance DC 21+Multiattack vs. [Physical] [Bludgeoning] Damage and Resistance DC 16+Multiattack vs. [Physical/Mental] [Positivity] Secondary Effect Impaired+Vulnerable/Disabled+Defenseless/Controlled [Only take joyful non-harmful actions] Affliction.

Nick Attack (DC 20, -5 for Full Visual Concealment) Miss...although honestly wasting those three defensive rolls was probably a worthwhile use of a standard action 😆

V14 Deflect

V14 Resistance vs. Damage

V14 Resistance vs. Affliction

Ben: Move: Into J12.
Free: Reconfigure Huntsman. 22 points to Combat Training, 11 points to Lightning Bolt's Light (One application of Limited Shapeable Area and Ricochet 5), 11 points to Bayonet Thrust, 11 points to Stab and Shoot (Weaken), 11 points to Rifle Shot (Weaken Penetrating), 11 points to Rifle Bolt (Area+Ricochet).
Standard: Attack Vampires 9 through 14 with Rifle Bolt. If this were AD&D (aka D&D 2nd edition) Vampires 13 and 14 would be in for a really bad day but lucky for them it's not. Penetrating to Pierce Immunity. On a hit, Resistance DC 26+Multiattack vs. [Energy] [Lightning] Damage and Resistance DC 21 vs. [Energy] [Lightning] Weaken Resistance. Again will roll defensive stuff in OOC since lots of targets.
Ben Attack vs. V9 (DC 22) Miss

Ben Attack vs. V10 (DC 22) Miss

Ben Attack vs. V11 (DC 10) ...He should have Routined this, but whatever. Hit.

Ben Attack vs. V12 (DC 17) Hit, full Multiattack and immunity ignored

Ben Attack vs. V13 (DC 22) Miss

Ben Attack vs. V14 (DC 22) Hit, +2 Multiattack but immunity only Penetrated so effectively a base DC hit.

End of Turn: Secondary Effect triggers. V7 gets Resistance DC 26 vs. Damage.
V7 Resistance (+2 for Penetrated Partial Electricity Immunity) Bruised and Dazed

Enemy turn to come.

((Okay it looks like I have to do the dice tower after posting? So rolls to come!))

Team FLNS (Ally Results and Enemy Turn)

Nevermores were huge, but they were also fast. The one Fang and Fadi shot at swooped aside from their shots as deftly as if it had been merely an enormous shadow cast by a much smaller bird. But the one that Dr. Brown had...n-not shot at? Retroactively shot at? Whatever, glitched at, was not so lucky. One hail of gattling gun fire was bad enough. Two was just too much, and with a shrieking cry it went down, starting to dissolve into smoke.

Animal intelligence had a lot of downsides. But to be fair, it did mean there was no time wasted trying to reason through just how completely improbable it was that some strange blue box had appeared and delivered a bunch of Hunters onto the enemy side. With their original prey getting whisked away, hey sure the Nevermores changed their focus to whatever targets were still available. Say what you would about the Creatures of Grimm but at least nobody could accuse them of being picky.

They mostly left their feathers unfired (except for one that was kinda wavering in the air presumably from some previous hit from the Fable brothers, which steadied its flight and launched a volley at Sorin), instead swooping around the forest, snatching at people on the pass with their enormous claws, or pecking at them with their huge beaks.

Mechanics

Okay gonna try the dice tower this round and see how it works.

Nevermores:
Move: They're kinda flying around and Move-by Action attacking, aside from 3 who's Dazed.
Standard: Mostly using Raven Claw (Resistance DC 27 vs. [Physical] [Slashing] Damage, DC 22 vs. [Physical] [Slashing] Weaken Effect, and DC 22 vs. [Material] [Bone] Grab+Disarm or Huge Beak (Resistance DC 27+Penetrating vs. [Physical] [Piercing] Damage and DC 22+Penetrating vs. [Physical] [Piercing] Weaken Resistance). #3 attacks Sorin with Feather Storm (Resistance DC 27+Multiattack vs. Damage, but this is an Area attack even though its only targeting him).
#1 attacks Fen with Raven Claw.
#2 attacks Fen with Huge Beak.
#3 attacks Sorin with Feather Storm.
#4 attacks Fadi with Huge Beak.
#5 attacks Chapi with Huge Beak.
#7 attacks Nicoale with Raven Claw.
#8 attacks Dr. Brown with Raven Claw.

All PCs are on turn.

Team RACL (Ally Results and NPC Turn)

The vampire Nick attacked dodged one way while its shadowy cloak kinda flowed the other, offsetting Nick's aim enough that it avoided his flurry of blows. Ben's lightning bolt dished out some damage, particularly to one of them that was too restrained by Lapis's gravitic threads to avoid getting hit full in the chest by the powerful bolt of lightning. But Anya hit the hardest, damaging several of the vampires, knocking two of their Auras into the red, and outright shattering one's Aura and dropping it to the ground when Talaria collided with their forehead.

The vampires who came out worst in the exchange turned to mist, one of them floating down through the floorboards, one of them going out under the far door, with some more clouds of mist flowing into the room after, coalescing into six more of the freaking things (Rhys could recognize one their scents from previously, but the other five apparently hadn't been part of the first fight against JNBS). And the other two...trying to drop through the floorboards but getting yanked by up by Lapis's gravity when they did, so sucks to be them but at least they were made of mist now so that might help I guess?

Seeing that swarming in close hadn't availed them much, the vampires altered their tactics, firing blasts of dark energy on the move, scattering through the room and tossing open doors to the two dorms on either side, giving them more space to spread out into but unfortunately denying them the opportunity to use those rooms as cover (but whatever that's what floorboards are for it's not like the doors would have been hard for you guys to open either).

Mechanics

Injured Vampires (2, 9, 11, 12, and 14):
Free: Reconfigure Vampire Spawn. 16 points to Shadowblend, 16 points to Fast Healing, 10 points to Gaseous Form, 6 points to Bat Form.
Move: Those that can are dipping.
Standard: I mean mostly they're Dazed or Staggered or something so whatever.
Also: I guess Vampire 11 gets free from being Bound since Rhys's chain just passes through it now.
End of Turn: Regenerate something, recover a point of whatever Weakens they have. V11 and V12 get a chance to recover from Lapis's Affliction.

Other Vampires:
Move: Some of them are entering the room first. Others are moving after they swap arrays but whatever they're all moving somewhere.
Free: Reconfigure Vampire Spawn. 8 points to Shadowblend (Visual), 8 points to Celerity, 8 points to Projection, 8 points to Slam, 16 points to Energy Drain.
Standard: Attack with Energy Drain. On a hit, Resistance DC 23 vs. [Energy] [Darkness] Damage and Resistance DC 18 vs. [Energy] [Darkness] Weaken Effect and Resistance. Let's see looks like there's nine of them here and Lapis would have Partial Cover so one'll shoot at him and two each at the rest of you.

Sorin...okay, yeah, he'd underestimated Chapi. Don't get me wrong, he knew full well how fast she was, but he hadn't quite expected her to be able to blip Fen's entire family inside Delores almost before he'd finished his sentence - more because he'd expected them to, you know, not just let themselves get abducted at super-speed (I mean sure he'd tried to reassure them, but still). Then again he didn't really know exactly how her Semblance worked. Maybe it didn't care about things like that.

Certainly three of the brothers coming straight back out of Delores and trying to continue fighting was a little more what he'd expected of them...although he had kinda hoped that Delores wouldn't let them do that. Maybe she wasn't allowed to trap people.

He knocked the feathers coming his way aside with a sweep of his shield and leapt across the forest, golden feathers gleaming, to slash at the Nevermore that had attacked him, leaving a trail of Fire Dust down its side, before swooping back to the main battle in time to get himself between Fen and the oncoming Nevermore - almost putting himself in the way and not quite getting his shield in the way as well in time, but with another flare of golden light from his feathers he managed to twist in mid-air and stop the Grimm's beak cold before it soared away.

His quick flight across the forest did bring him back in time to hear one of the brothers say something...and, I mean, sure, at first he thought Fadi meant the Fen who was from this moment in time, and...really it would've been pretty hard to convince him to just abandon her. Him apparently trying to protect the Fen from Sorin's time was...a bit more of a surprise, although not necessarily an unwelcome one.

He ran his brush down his palette again as it collapsed back down to normal buckler size and slashed it through the air, sending an Aura-infused line of Plant Dust threading its way through the trees in a way that would've made Lapis proud (look Sorin might have mostly been trying to imitate the long-standing members of his team and RACL but that didn't mean that he wasn't going to take a few hints from Lapis as well) to try to wrap up the Nevemores - and specifically their wings.

"Get back inside!" he called to the Fable brothers. "We got this!"

He did still fire a shot of Hard Light Dust from his buckler at the Nevermore that had tried to peck Fen, because even time travel wasn't going to stop him being overprotective of his friends.

Some of the hostiles flee, more pour out. The building is just lousy with goons. This is going to take a while. Hence, the applied pressure will need to be increased.

Once more, Lapis rushes forward. Once more, he intercepts an attack meant for one of his allies, this time Rhys. Once more, almost as a consequence of their own actions, the seemingly limitless threads whip out across the room. Once more, they seek to bind in webs within webs of gravitic thread.

This time, however, Lapis pulls the threads tight, followed by raising a foot straight up above his head. His boot slams down on the accumulated threads, pinning them to the ground, the motion setting off the systems within the web that slam any bound fashion victims against the nearby hard surfaces.

Afterwards... he simply moves back into cover. This will be a marathon, not a sprint.

It finally gets through to Rhys that punching is not the most helpful thing he can be doing right now. He's been so laser-focused that he subconsciously limited his own options. Rushing blindly in hasn't worked so far, and Robin might not have time for him to waste.

So he throttles his emotions and unlimbers Athloi, the Labors, from his back. The wickedly-curved axe shifts and transforms into an enormous bow that he wields with deft finesse. As he nocks each arrow and fires enough to blot out the sun, they drip wicked poison and blaze with napalm-like hellfire that will seek to leech the target's defenses and resistances alike.

"Protect you?" There was something almost seductive about Chro's words and a tiny part of the endlessly optimistic Faunus began to wonder if maybe he could trust him this time "Like Vacuo?" In an instant whatever hold his words had over him were washed away by something else equally unfamiliar to Robin.

Anger

Flashes of their fight back home bubbled up from some long repressed area of his mind, drowing out whatever fear Robin was feeling moments ago and propelled him forward towards Chro, his knuckles turning white as his grip on Inugami tightened.

"You're lying! Just like before! You always lie! Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!"

"I dunno about you guys, but this is taking too long," Anya commented, glancing around as the not-vampires scattered. "Nick, I can pave the way, but would you do the honors and install a chimney under these yahoos, with extreme prejudice?" she asked with a grin. As she did so, she kicked a few shards of Earth dust at the nearest foe, though it was for the purpose of distraction rather than accuracy. Beneath each of the vampires, the floor began to shudder and creak as she started to shake them apart.

Lapis has had problems with fitting into the various shifting team training constellations over the past few months. The class already had its own dynamic, but more importantly, they are teenagers. The only Huntsmen Lapis had worked with until Haven Academy were adults. Team SCCS, occasionally one or two other Huntsmen teams. Additionally, local militia and lower-case hunters, rarely military (there is not the biggest presence out in the vastness of Mistral). Two years of vastly different dynamics, tactics, tendencies, and just generally being around people with much more life experience, and world views colored by that. It takes time to move away from two taxing years, especially when you have not had normal socialization in the regular school system prior to that.

Thus, Lapis has been trying his best to fit into the RACL dynamic as lived by Robin and Rhys, something Anya seemed to have adapted to much, much quicker. His teammates seemed to be satisfied with his work so far, which is a big relief, but given how much introspection and analysis of his own actions he has had to do in his life to keep up, he kept noticing that he kept missing beats, trends, of Team RACL.

Anya letting them know this was taking too long is one of those missed beats. Despite the fiery disposition of many a Team SCCS member, that Huntsmen team has a steady (if outwardly... and sometimes inwardly chaotic) efficiency to it. Team SCCS would have cleared the building fast, but from top to bottom, as to not be surrounded.

Team SCCS is not Team RACL. Team RACL frequently picked the path of most resistance in the past if that was what it took, and came out on top. This partially clashes with those two years out in the Mistralian wilderness. But only partially. The other part instilled into him was that at times, great risks need to be taken, action needs to be taken fast and decisively. And you need to trust your team, just as they must be able to trust you. Lapis worked himself to the bone over and over so Team SCCS could trust in him to get the job as their apprentice done.

Solstice and Robin are in great danger. Rhys showed no hesitation to throw himself into the fray. Anya recognized the time to change plans and go faster.

So... he should see about building that trust with Team RACL and learn this new way.

"Please, allow me," Lapis says to his team, heading into the room, web-like patterns on his clothes beginning to shed light. The floor is already incredibly weakened by Anya's work, so opening it should be easy. But he is not concerned about this floor. A single floor is not fast enough. He wants to go through every floor, rip this refuge wide open.

Seven needles, teeny tiny sewing needles made of Aura, are thrown in a rough circle around Lapis, in seemingly random spots. One single needle is held between thumb and index finger, point set against the ground. This is not the expertise of Elegance or Mirth. No, this is Mettle's domain. For his father Cyan does not merely know how to strike well, properly align the blade, and maximize the body's strength and motions for the greatest effect. It is also a question where to strike. And everything has a weakness.

Two years of learning how to use his body mechanics to the greatest possible effect, Lapis pushes. And the ground beneath him up until the seven needles simply shatters. And as he falls, seven more needles are thrown, and that one tiny spot in the middle is struck, once again shattering the ground. Again and again, crushing a tunnel through the building, until the bottom is reached. The only pause happens should he come across Solstice, Lapis looking at whatever vampires are assailing her. "There is no place for you to hide. We are coming for you." And the digging continues, should the building go deeper still.

Once he has gone as deep as he could, his muscles and threads catapult him through the complex, grabbing Robin and/or Solstice, should he come across them, or at least move to protect them. In any case, any findings of teammates and/or opposition are shouted back up.

EE Move Action

Spending a Hero Point to Power Stunt Novice Seamster into the following:

Burrowing 17 (Speed Rank 3; Area to increase the diameter of the tunnel to Distance Rank -2 x 2 = 12ft) [34pp]

Strength 6 (Lifting only) [4pp]

Flight 16 (winged) [16pp]

Feature (easy lift, the one that lets me pick people up as free action) [1pp]

Feature 2 (illuminate his surroundings with light Dust) [2pp]

EE Move Move to G14 or so and dig a 12ft diameter tunnel straight down as far as Lapis can go and as long as there any sort of artificial ground beneath him. Should he come Robin and/or Solstice, he will try to run to them, pick them up with Free Lift, and maybe get them out of the hole. If, say, Solstice can't be easily whisked away, Lapis is moving to protect her.

Chapi would note the trio heading outside and give a tsk, looking at them as she winds up to scold them. "I already said she's fine! I can say with absolute certainty that she's going to be alr-" and then she was replaced by a giant beak where she once stood. Of course, once the Nevermore continued its path, anyone paying any attention would see Chapi straddling the beak, holding on for dear life dramatically taunting the bird with her expert agility!

As the Nevermore banked, she would be sure to add "We'll talk more later, no dying allowed!"

Fen grits her teeth as her attack completely misses, and she finds herself trapped in the claws of a Nevermore. Well, her brothers are safe in Dolores, so this doesn't--

Fadi, Fang, and Falk rush out the door and begin drawing attention to themselves.

Sorin's blast causes the Nevermore to release Fen a moment later, and she drops to the ground, grabbing her gun with a silent snarl.

Team FLNS (PC Results and Ally Turn)

Sorin's Plant dust caught two of the Nevermores, vines writhing out to bind one's wings and bind the second pretty-much totally. Even more conveniently, that second one was the one that grabbed Fen, and the vines constricting caused its grip to slacken, allowing her to drop to the ground.

Nicoale's next shot hit her target center-mass, the artillery shell embedding into its chest. It was a serious injury, but a Grimm the size of a Nevermore could take it, more-or-less. Whether it would be able to take it when the Dust in the shell exploded? Well, I guess we'll see, won't we?

Chapi clinging to the Nevermore's beak may have looked comical, but to be fair, she definitely got its attention. Literally clinging to its face would do that, don't you know?

Fadi was kinda staring at Fen as she dropped from the Nevermore and grabbed her sniper rifle. Now having time to look at her for more than a fleeting moment...she clearly resembled his sister, although several years older. But how...?

"Let the Hunters do their jobs," Fang said. "They're trying to protect us and we're exposing them to additional risk. Once the Nevermores are down we'll get Fen. She'll be okay. I don't know that anything could get close enough to threaten her right now."

"R-right," Fadi replied, the three of them withdrawing back into the weird box that...okay yeah was definitely bigger on the inside than the outside what the literal shards? I mean, not before they each fired a shot at one of the Nevermores, aiming for the face so as to try to force them to dodge, giving the Hunters an opening to attack into their momentum. Least they could do after disobeying orders and stuff.

And then...well, to get into what happened then, we have to go back a bit, to where Doctor Brown was leading the team through the school towards Delores. He had at one point on the way stopped, took some sort of Dust device out of one of the innumerable pockets in his labcoat, handed it to Chapi and asked her to hold it for him, and then continued on without explanation. Everybody could clearly remember that happening.

...It was a bit of an open question, though, whether they had been able to clearly remember that happening six seconds ago.

Not important! Anyway, my point is, that while Chapi was clinging to the Nevermore's beak and it was wildly shaking its head around trying to dislodge her, that little device went flying out of Chapi's pocket or wherever she was keeping it, flew past the Nevermore's head, impacted its wing just past where it attached to its body, and exploded. And what do you know, by some fluke of simply unbelievable coincidence (as in, nobody can possibly believe it's actually a coincidence), it happened just as Doctor Brown was taking aim with his gattling gun to rain heavy fire upon that very Nevermore!

Meanwhile, the other Doctor Brown (oh yeah there were two of them now, as one does) went into a didactic lecture, as if you had been in Science class.

"Students, attend! While Nevermores tend to be solitary creatures, they still have avian instincts, including a natural tendency to flock when together. Note how the three Grimm to our left are coordinating their flight paths. You can use that to potentially predict where one will be going, by paying attention to where another has been." And then the Brown who was shooting the gattling gun disappeared. It's okay. Teacher Brown had one too.

"Yes, definitely just science..." Brown added, for no reason anybody could discern.

Team RACL (PC Results and Ally Turn)

The vampires were getting wiser to the threat of Lapis's threads, and consequentially putting more effort into avoiding them, dodging aside in shadowy blurs of hasted speed. ...For those who could, anyway. At least one of them was already trapped and very much couldn't, and was consequentially crushed by the gravity well until their Aura broke.

Rhys's arrows thrummed through the room. The vampires basically went for halvesies against them. Nine shots, four dodges, one graze, and four solid hits. of varying degrees of severity.

The floor had little defense against Anya's vibrations, and already weakened, Lapis's threads had surprisingly little difficulty tearing through it! And the next floor down, for that matter!

So, with Lapis handling the job of punching through the floor, Nick would handle the job of dispensing the extreme prejudice. "Hohoho! Let's see some Landing Strategies, people!" he called out, leaping into the room as the North Pole returned to bazooka mode and firing not one but two rockets, one at each side room to blast all the vampires within and maybe even the ones on the other side of the walls.

At which point the floor, weakened by vibrations, torn open by threads, and now taking simultaneous high-explosive hits to opposite sides, decided it was clocking out early today. It collapsed, and the impact of it collapsed the next floor down, and all the rubble fell together into the third level down where Lapis, Jack, and Solstice were-

-and stopped.

Ben, even as he basically surfed a couple floorboards down, lashed out with lightning at the vampires who were trapped in Lapis's threads. Or...no, he wasn't aiming at them, he was aiming at the threads themselves. Dust is reactive to various energies, we know that from the various Dust fires and explosions and such we have encountered through absolutely no fault of Chapi's whatsoever. Ben wasn't quite the experimenter Isaac was, but there was nothing wrong with his Science grade. Running a current of his lightning - which as a manifestation of his Semblance also carried the touch of his Aura - through the gravitic threads greatly intensified the effect of the Dust woven into them, for a few seconds.

Ben caught all the falling rubble and debris, and sent it hurling away from his teammates and at any vampire still fighting! He'd even electrokinetically manipulate the gravity well to guide the descent of his allies and toss all the unconscious folks safely outside because of course electricity lets you do stuff like that that's just science.

Which would bring them face to face with their master.

Vlad Pale.

Mechanics

Lapis, Anya Weakening the floor made it easier for you to tunnel through (and since her Weaken is Contagious no reason it couldn't hit the floor below too). If you wish to buy off your Fatigue for that power stunt, you can do so by depleting your current Limit bar rather than spending a Hero Point.

Team FLNS (Ally Results and Enemy Turn):

Brown's temporal trap was well-laid, and between the distractions offered by Chapi and Fang his spray of bullets hit home. It didn't...it didn't really have the results he was going for, though, the Nevermore taking some modest damage rather than, like, dissolving immediately to ash and giving Chapi an opportunity for a cool Landing Strategy. Harrumph. It was kinda hard to see what he was talking about with the flocking but...okay yeah maybe one of the Nevermores was kinda following the same flightpath of the others, fair enough.

The Nevermores continued swooping around the battlefield, mostly clawing and pecking, although the one with its wings bound in Sorin's Plant Dust fired a spray of feathers at Nicoale. But while Fen may have been channeling her fear and hatred of the Nevermores, that didn't mean she wasn't feeling them, as point made obvious when the two most distant ones flew past literally all other possible targets to land on either side of her, both pecking with their enormous beaks.

Mechanics

Nevermores:
Move: Those that can do.
Standard: Attacking with various Huge Beak (5 vs. Chapi, 3 and 4 vs. Fen), Raven Claw (7 vs. Sorin, 8 vs. Brown), or Featherstorm (1 vs. Nicoale). On a hit, Chapi and Fen take Resistance DC 27+Penetrating vs. [Physical] [Piercing] Damage and Resistance DC 22+Penetrating vs. Weaken Resistance; Sorin and Brown take Resistance DC 27 vs. [Physical] [Slashing] Damage, Resistance DC 22 vs. Weaken Effect, and Resistance DC 22 vs. [Material] [Flesh] Grab+Disarm; Nicoale takes Resistance DC 27+Multiattack vs. Area Damage. NM3 Charges to do this.
Nevermore Attacks vs. Nicoale, Fen, Fen, Chapi, Sorin, Brown (DC lol 36 after all her bonuses, 24, 22, 24, 16, 24) Nicoale and Brown are missed, and the first attack on Fen and Chapi can't beat the minimum on Brown's Deflect. Second attack on Fen and the attack on Sorin hit.

End of Turn: The Nevermores with Afflictions each gain 6 RP to them from their Endurance power, and get Resistance to try to recover:
Nevermore 1, 2, 8 Recovery (DC 21, 21, 22) Fail, success, success. LOL the time traveler got shafted by the turn order.

Fen, the Nevermores are honing in on your fear and hatred. This is the second turn in a row you've been double-teamed by higher-PL opponents and it's likely to continue as long as they have the numbers to do it. Take a Hero Point for your Black Wings Complication.

All PCs are on turn.

Team RACL

Vlad Pale was about as tall as Jack was, but not as lanky, his build lean but toned. He wore a fine dark suit in an older style, the sort you'd expect to see in like period movies and such. His skin was pale and his hair dark, his eyes blood red but not actually glowing. He did not seem to be carrying any weapons, but he wore a...frankly ludicrously long (as in, it not only swept all the way down to the floor but I kid you not trailed out like ten feet behind him) purple cape that seemed to be fluttering gently in a breeze of its own, the shadows of the dark room seeming to crawl over it. Lapis would immediately recognize the signs of fabric threaded with Wind and Darkness Dust. Speaking purely from an objective tailoring perspective, it was extremely fine work, nearly on par with his own.

Vlade was standing in the middle of the room, one arm extended, hand balled into a fist, as if he had only just delivered a crushing punch. This likely has some correlation with the fact that Jack was lying slumped against the far wall of the room, unconscious. His Aura must have been broken, because one of his legs was bent at an unnatural angle, and one of his shoulders clearly dislocated. He'd done Wulf proud fighting in defense of his teammate, alone against a strictly superior foe, not given up even after his Aura had broken. It hadn't been anything close to enough.

Solstice stood a bit back and to the side of Vlad, evidently unharmed, but with a completely vacant look in her eyes, her face slack, devoid of any feeling. It was an unnatural expression for her, doubly so given Jack's state - there was absolutely no way that she wouldn't have been distraught at seeing her friend and team leader so badly injured. It did not take Insight checks to see she was under the vampire's mental control.

"Well. I suppose nobody could possibly claim that you do not know how to make an entrance," he commented idly, licking a bit of blood off of his knuckles. "Minions. Feed!" And Vlad's cape literally lunged across the room, striking at Ben and Nick both in a flurry of swipes and flutters.

The vampire spawn gave unholy shrieks and leaped back into the fray with renewed vigor. Two of them went for Solstice, one grabbing each of her arms, which she allowed them to do without resistance, while punching at Lapis with their free hands. Four of the others that were in gaseous form just kinda drifted...but it might be notable that the glow of their red eyes appeared amidst the vapor, turned in Solstice's direction, and dark energy was crawling in the mist.

The rest, any who were capable at least, swarmed in and fired their blasts of darkness wildly.

Once everyone had closed who was going to close, Solstice (a bit awkwardly with a vampire holding her arms, but they didn't exactly stop her) reached into her basket, charged an egg grenade with her Semblance, and threw it down, bathing every vampire nearby in restorative energy that renewed their Auras.

"Oh-ho-hooo...no. Solstice healing the bad guys is literally my nightmare!"

"Lapis, can you free her like you did me?" That was probably an unnecessary suggestion, but Ben was kinda used to being the team strategist. Seriously between Jack's apathetic arrogance, Nick's jolly overconfidence, and Solstice's compassionate inclination to heal any non-hostile in line of sight with even the most trivial damage even though she had a basket full of grenades and a chainsaw axe and could probably be putting them to somewhat more efficient use, keeping Team JNBS on-task and in under their heads during their various battles and training missions over the past year had been a job of work.

God Solstice you had to roll that well for the bad guys?

All PCs are on turn.

Robin:

Chro whipped his dagger in a defensive web, and though you had the advantage of reach and trained skill, Chro had always been a fair hand in a fight, and with supernaturally enhanced strength and speed his smaller weapon was able to turn aside your heavy swing. "Come on, Robin, don't you want-hm?"

"Ah. It would seem that fools have rushed in."

"Sorry, Robin. My Master wishes that I finish what I am doing and attend to him presently, so I guess I no longer have the time to try and convince you."

"I'll just have to crush you completely."

And then he gave a mocking smirk and added, "It'll be just like old times."

And Chro waded in, dagger crawling with dark energy, moving with almost serpentine grace to get inside your reach, blurring speed to capitalize on the openings you had left in your wild attack, coming in hard - and then whirling behind you, coming in with blurring speed for a devastating backstab while your momentum was too far forward, making use of every cunning trick of dirty fighting he had learned over the course of years of survival on the mean streets of Vacuo.

Mechanics

Chro:

Sorin's weapon turned into a giant, three-pronged talon and he basically caught the Nevermore's claw in his own makeshift one to stop it from closing around him, and used the momentum of the impact itself to launch himself towards Fen as the Nevermores came for her...only for suddenly the Nevermores to have already done their attacks a few seconds too early and nowhere near Fen.

Dr Brown's Semblance was annoying to think about too much.

Since there was no sense wasting the momentum, though, he pushed more Aura into his wings and sped up even further, flowing around the entire battlefield in a blaze of golden light - and trailing Fire and Plant Dust onto the Nevermores, which rapidly erupted into yet more vines as Sorin circled around and swooped to a halt to land atop Delores, hopefully this time close enough to Dr Brown that he could benefit from the weird deja-vu effect as well...or at least hopefully it would stop giving him a headache every time he saw it. It was bad enough in class!

He would've said something encouraging, but since probably the one who needed the most encouragement was Fen and she wouldn't have heard him (and his Aura was recovering from pushing his Semblance that hard so he couldn't just write in the air either), he didn't bother.

OOC

Free: Reconfigure Tactical Combatant.  11 points to Green Feather, 4 points to Wings of Gold [Winged Aura Mobility 8; 120ft after Fatigued], 10 points to Blasting Gauntlet [Partial Physical Immunity when Interposing], 11 points to Cyan Feather, 22 points to Adaptability, 11 points to Battle Artistry

Free: Dismiss and then reactivate Adaptability. -11 to remove Green Feather, +6 to add Affliction 11 [Immobilised/Stunned] (Limited Degree), +11 to add Shapeable Area 2 [Limited: Full Action] to Affliction, +2 to add another 4 ranks of Winged Aura Mobility (250ft after Fatigued), +2 to add Homing to Damage and Affliction, and...uh, let's say +1 to add Feature 1 (targets affected by the Affliction are coated in colourful flowers)

Free: Mobility to increase speed to 500ft, can't fail.

Move: Into melee with NM3, then around through all the Nevermores except 5 (well I guess I can pay 5 a quite literally flying visit and give it a lil boop, but nothing mechanical).

Standard: Shapeable Area my way through all the Nevermores except 5. DC26+Penetrating/21 vs [Material/Energy (Fire)] Damage Linked [Material/Material (Wood)] Immobilised/Stunned Affliction. Both elements are Homing on a miss.
Attack vs NM1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 Should hit 1 (with +2 Penetrating after Vulnerable from Dr Brown), 2 and 7 (with +2 Penetrating on its own merit).

Move-By Action: Somewhere so that I'm actually in range of any future Deflects. I guess I'll just perch on Delores. I'm sure she won't mind.

Status: Partial Physical Immunity [Interpose Only], Bruised.
