Erik "The Hand" Thresher

Backstory

In the tumultuous borderlands shadowed by the Worldwound's corruption, Erik Thresher's life was irrevocably changed in his youth when a demon's attack left him on the brink of death.

This boy, left for dead in the wake of the beast's assault, survived against all odds, bearing wounds that healed into scars of a curious nature. Among these, his right hand, which bore the worst of the demon's fury, healed in a manner unlike any other - a constant reminder of the nightmarish ordeal.

As the boy grew into a man, his hand began to exhibit odd behaviors, moving with an uncanny will of its own. Whispers and rumors circulated, some believing the hand to be touched by demonic influence, a lingering curse from the demon that had nearly claimed his life. This suspicion cast a long shadow over his aspirations, particularly his deepest desire: to serve as a Paladin of Iomedae.

Despite his fervent faith and devotion to the Inheritor, the order denied him entry, citing the unpredictable nature of his hand as too great a risk—a decision that cut deeply, wounding his pride and sense of purpose. Yet, rather than turn him away from Iomedae, this rejection only fueled his determination. If he could not serve as a Paladin, he would find another way to prove his worth and defend the world against the darkness spewing forth from the Worldwound.

This determination to prove himself, to demonstrate his unwavering faith in Iomedae despite the doubts cast by others, became the cornerstone of his identity. His denied entry into paladinhood, rather than diminishing his self-esteem permanently, instilled in him a relentless drive to showcase his valor and commitment to Iomedae's ideals. His pursuit of martial prowess as a fighter was not just a path to redemption but a personal crusade to validate his worth, both to himself and to those who doubted him.

Yet, despite his bold front and unyielding resolve, the specter of his "Possessed Hand" and the whispers of demonic taint continued to haunt him. He viewed the hand not as a blessing but as a trial set upon him by Iomedae—a test of his faith and a challenge to overcome. In quiet moments, he questioned whether the hand's origins lay in darkness or if, perhaps, it was a sign that his destiny was to fight the Worldwound's corruption in a manner unlike any other.

His devotion to Iomedae remained unshaken, his prayers as fervent as ever, even as he sought ways to understand and control the hand's peculiar nature. In battle, he fought with a fervor that belied his inner turmoil, driven by a desire to earn the respect of his peers and to forge a legacy that would transcend the doubts surrounding his condition.

As he ventures forth, armed with the unpredictable power of his possessed hand, he carries with him the hope that through his deeds, he might one day unravel the mystery of his affliction and claim the redemption he seeks. His journey is one of contradiction - caught between divine devotion and suspected damnation, he seeks to prove that true valor and purity of heart can overcome even the darkest of origins.

Personality

Erik is defined by an indomitable spirit and a heart fiercely loyal to Iomedae's ideals. His faith remains strong, even in the face of skepticism from others, driving him to act with honor, courage, and a deep sense of justice. Rejection has made him introspective, often leading him to ponder his place in the fight against the Worldwound. Despite this, Erik possesses a warm, approachable demeanor, quick to stand up for those in need and equally quick to share a moment of camaraderie with his comrades.

His journey for redemption is also marked by an earnest desire to prove himself, not out of vanity, but from a sincere belief in earning his place as a defender of the innocent. This quest is tempered by moments of self-doubt, spurred by the unpredictable nature of his "Possessed Hand." Yet, it's these very contradictions—between faith and doubt, courage and introspection—that make Erik a complex warrior.

Appearance

Erik stands tall, bearing the physique of a seasoned warrior honed by years of hard labor and combat training. His hair is kept short, practical for a life of martial discipline, and his eyes burn with an unwavering resolve. The most striking feature is his right hand, which bears faint, unnatural scars - visible marks of his demonic encounter. Occasionally, the hand moves with a slight, independent twitch, hinting at the mysterious force that dwells within. Clad in armor that has seen some wear, Erik carries himself with a blend of humble confidence and a palpable sense of purpose.
