Character Applications

Hellooo theeeere Night City!

The Worldmaker here with ya, and we got another day ahead of us in this city of dreams.

I know character creation for Red can be an enormous task, so for applications, I'm looking for the basics, Night City has spent the last 2 decades embroiled in what can only be described as urban warfare, and though the corpo wars are over (allegedly), the streets are still filled with violence, poverty and injustice in incalculable ways.  What has your character been doing?  Did they participate in the wars as a foot soldier for Arasaka or Militech?  Were they involved in the creation of or were they part of any of the L Colonies during the declarations of independence?  The timeline is available for you to work your backstory into things you could find interesting.

Quote

Character name: The usual

Role: What path did you follow?  Are you a badass solo who can kill even with a pencil?  A media who would do anything to get the story?  A Netrunner who picked up a laptop when they were a kid and never put it down?

Appearance: What's your fashion?  Are you flashy and bold or do you prefer to fade into the background?  Hell, do you dress like a homeless person because you can't afford anything else?

Personality: Night City is full of personality, how do you interact with the world around you?

History: Whats your story?  What drives you?  Who are the people in your life that build you up?  Who are the people trying to tear you down?

Treasured Thing: Could be a best friend, a parent, a lover, a dog, a guitar, a gun, anything under the sun, but what is it and why is it so special?

Goal: You trying to make some quick cash or are you trying to get a drink named after you?

The quote above is all I need for a character application, but if you want to go whole hog and make the whole character, the Character template can be found in that link, it does not have to be followed, you're more than welcome to make your own, as long as the info in the sheet is accounted for.  You can roll for your character or choose whatever you like.  I love to use RipperdocRed (Be aware the skills aren't updated from the starter kit) to create my characters, you can roll or select the character you want, whatever floats your boat, it will walk you through the creation process and it can all be directly translated in to your character sheet.

For stats when creating your character:

Quote

• No Skill can be higher than 6.
• The following Skills must be at least Level 2: Athletics, Brawling, Concentration, Conversation,
Education, Evasion, First Aid, Human Perception, Language (Streetslang), Local Expert (Your Home),
Perception, Persuasion, and Stealth
• Skills marked in the Master Skill List with a (x2) cost two Skill points to increase in Level by
one. All other Skills cost one Skill point to increase in Level by one.
• Don't forget the 4 Levels of Language you get free based on the Cultural Origin section of your Lifepath

You have a total of 60 skill points to distribute after adding the required skills

Post applications in this thread please, and once you've been accepted, go ahead and post your full character sheet right here

Here is my application.  I have a character sheet more-or-less done, let me know when/if I need to fill out the template.  I also have a longer version of the background, but wanted to keep the application brief.  Not even sure it should go in here or in a new topic, let me know and I can move it.

Character name: Akari 朱莉 (kanji for vermilion jasmine, not her birth name)

Handle:  Lady Koi

Lifepath: High-end escort/Geisha turned information broker/fixer.  See below for role-specific lifepath options.

Appearance: Asian/Hispanic mix, looks younger than she is, generally wears generic chic in mix and match combinations, has some nice clothes for fancy clients.

Personality:  Respect is key for her as her business doesn’t use written contracts usually.  Your word is your bond.  She does not expect the worst in people, but is not naïve and trusting either.  She does not go out of her way to screw people over, and prefers to avoid violence always.

History: Lady Koi is an escort, information broker and generally someone who puts people together with other people who need or can provide something.  The consummate middle person.  The thing she values most is honor, in that most of her deals are verbal and so a person's only as good as their word.  Lady Koi also goes by Akari among close friends or lovers.  She grew up in the heart of the combat zone and so had a rough childhood.  Because of that she doesn't put much value in material things unless they have a purpose or cost her a lot (in effort not necessarily money) to acquire.  Her native language is Japanese, she can communicate in Streetslang as well.  She generally works out of a booth at a nearby bar, however, rather than bringing anyone to her home.  Thanks to some connections the bar owners permit her to use the space, and it’s been long enough now that she gets along well with the staff and is a known fixture.

Role Specific Life Path

What Kind of Fixer are You?  Procure rare or atypical resources for exclusive clientele.

Got a Partner?  Secret partner with mob connections.

What's your office like?  A booth in a local bar.

Treasured Thing: An earring that belonged to her mother, a jade tear drop.

Goal: Trying to become independently wealthy so she can retire someplace comfortable.

Application

Character name: Mei Wu

Handle: Scythe

Lifepath: A Netrunner, she began messing around with her parents computers and virtuality goggles as a young child, and got her brain-jack at the youngest legal age of 14.

  • Ethnicity: East Asian (Chinese)
  • Personality: Stable and Serious
  • Clothing! Businesswear
  • Hairstyle: Short Spiked Hair
  • Affectation: Always has Fingerless Gloves
  • Values Most: Knowledge
  • Feels about most people: Neutral
  • Most Valued Person: herself
  • Most valued possession: a recording
  • Original Background: ganger family
  • Childhood environment: Drift Nation
  • Background: family imprisoned
  • Friends: One, someone with a common goal
  • Enemies: One, a government official who she caused major public humiliation, can throw themself and 1d6/2 friends at her. She avoids them, the official is attempting to frame her.
  • Goal: Gain power and control

Appearance: Short and delicate, Scythe maintains a refined appearance while on the job, typically wearing a Kevlar laced cheap but professional looking business suit. Her hair is short and dark (though it is actually tech hair), the only sign of rebellion the spiky and mussed up style her hair is perpetually in. Underneath the suit, she hosts a small set of Tyger Claws light tattoos, and though she is not a member of the gang, she does work often for them.

Personality: She is professional while at work: in direct contrast, she is very exuberant and excitable while around people she feels comfortable with. Sarcastic wit dominates her sense of humour. She doesn’t care much for most people, and treats them with curt respect.

History: Only child of a couple of Tyger Claw gangers, Mei grew up in the combat-zone of Little China. Her mother was a Netrunner and her father was a Solo. She started Netrunning near the end of the fourth corporate war, mainly minor jobs for the Tyger Claw. After her parents went MIA in the war, she became determined to elevate her status, escape from the combat zone. She developed quite a talent for 'running, and began to do more amitious jobs, for sometimes for corps, sometimes for gangers. She began to work with another Netrunner, whom she never met but online. Their relationship is complicated: she is half convinced her partner is a rogue AI, while her other half is considering them as a potential paramour.

She exposed some dirt on a minor corp exec while working for a rival corp, and the exec has never forgiven her.

Treasured Thing: When she was young, her parents would sing her a lullaby every night, the same song in duet. In the years leading up the the fourth corporate war, her parents began to get more busy as the gang attempted to solidify turf, and they often were unable to make it home. Because of this, they made a short recording of themselves singing the melody, for when they were not home. After her parents disappearance during the fourth corporate war, the short clip became her most prized possession

Goal: Scythe wants to leave the combat zone behind and leave her mark as an infamous Netrunner in the process.

WIP, can’t finish tonight. Just rolled lifepath so far. Not sure where else to put this, sorry if it’s wrong to do here.

Looks good, if you want to start working on the character sheet, go for it, there's plenty of time until the end of the month, Lady Koi sounds like she'll be good for more subterfuge focused missions.

It's not wrong to do it here at all, thats what this post is for.  I should change the template a tiny bit though, by lifepath I meant role, I used the wrong word, didn't mean to make anyone do all those rolls if they weren't ready.

She exposed some dirt on a minor corp exec while working for a rival corp, and the exec has never forgiven her. The Tyger Claws have been on her back for a while, trying to permanently induct her, but she has so far resisted all attempts.

One hobby she has is composing music, a sort of Chinese-traditional music inspired heavy metal, which she makes on her computer and posts online. So far, she is almost entirely unheard of. (Might take some Rockerboy ranks later, if the improvement points come freely enough to facilitate that).

Treasured Thing: When she was young, her parents would sing her a lullaby every night, the same song in duet. Completed. I also made the sheet, on paper, though I haven't ported it to online yet. I did have a question about the STATS, if someone would look at those? I've never played cyberpunk before, and I just want to make sure my STATS are decently assigned. It doesn't seem like Netrunners really have use for STATS as much as other roles do, but thought I should ask in case I am missing something.

Here is my two-bits on stats for a Netrunner:

High Tech and INT is crucial for doing your basic job of netrunning.  After that, set your priorities with these reminders:  Body and Will provide hit points, high-ish EMP if you plan on cybering up, and Dex for Evasion, key in HTH or Melee combat.

I figured TECH and INT would be important, but I didn't see anything specific in the rules that mentioned any stat. I liked the idea of high COOL for the character, but I will look at re-adjusting stats. Also, is it worth it to prioritize combat? What is HTH? How much should I prioritize combat, I had been assuming Solos and Lawmen would be handling that while I will be 'in the net'?

(I'd like to cyber up. But the good stuff is expensive)

Everyone should be able to fight a little bit.  HTH is hand to hand combat, unarmed.  That is Brawling or Martail Arts and Evasion.  Evasion is also used to avoid melee weapons.  I chose to put some skill in handguns and evasion, so I can shoot back and dodge.  But yes, I'm going to rely on the Solos and Lawmen to be up front.  If you look at the skill list everything related to technology or science is either Tech or INT.  Don't over look Electronics/Security Tech skill.  Even though it is x2 and therefore expensive it is the skill used to hack a phone or defeat alarms, or to work on any electronic device.

I am only suggesting that you consider prioritizing survivability.  Whether that is boosting HP or your chances of avoiding damage or of getting them before they get you.  Without sacrificing core skills, of course.

Ref: the template doesn't have a place for the Role Ability or it's sub-functions, if any either.

APPLICATION - NOMAD

1139568049_MaleSolo.jpg.b58be59f3f64d8e83b81ca85c7dd99e3.jpg

>>Character Name: Tristan Campbell

>>Handle: Kat*

>>Lifepath: Nomad Outrider turned muscle for hire; former Panzerboi

>>Appearance: Tristan has that rustbelt, cornfed square jawed NUSA look so common to Militech recruiting posters, but the the resemblance stops around the eyes.  It's not - notably - the off-shelf VAspec cyberware replacements that kills the look but rather the knowing, slightly haunted cynicism that lurks there that would send any sensible Militech enlistment officer heading for the irradiated hills.  Add a perpetual few days scruff, a handful of tattoos, road leathers and at least one noticeable scar and you end up with with a fairly stereotypical nomad who's easy on the eyes but hard on the world.

>>Personality: Gigs' a gig, and most things come out in the wash.  It's what you think doesn't that defines you and you'd best hold those lines like the slottin' wall else the Corps will eat you alive.  Aside from that bit of naive optimism, Kat takes after his namesake - quick to cold calculating anger, slow to grudging forgiveness and smugly amused or feigning cool disinterest about pretty much everything in-between.

>>History: Born in 2008 in a refugee camp for the survivors of the Mass driver strike against his mother's hometown of Colorado Springs, Tristan's fam migrated cross the Rockies and made their way to Night City during the twenty-teens boom.  Life wasn't easy - an adopted clan of too many mouths and too few 'rents capable of pulling in eddies - but it was good, in it's own way and the future seemed chrome enough, neon lit tho it was.  So of course when Tris was old enough to make his own way he did: standing on his own too feet like the clan taught him and marching right into that Miltech recruitment station and signing up.  The bonus paid the bills for a month and with what he was going to make he'd be able to help out more than a little each month.

He was fourteen when they plugged him into his first panzer.  Fifteen when he first saw combat - though in Militech's defense that was just a frack up; the 4th Corporate war hadn't gone truly hot yet and he was still running rear echelon supply runs when a 'Saka PA/FBC contingent got the drop on the convoy.  Keeping his head was enough to merit a promotion and a transfer, introducing him to his co-pilot for the rest of the war.  Katerina Červeny-Leroux.

He was eighteen when he felt her die across the pilot link; when he sat with her alone in the dark and listened - felt - all she ever was and ever would be slide away between strained breaths and failing heartbeats. He still dreams about her sometimes.  The two of them.

Hell of a way to fall in love.**

He went AWOL the next day.  Night City was a crater then, parts that counted anyway, and his fam hadn't been spared the firestorm; between the wreck and the ruin the future wasn't bright anymore, just burning and he turned to the wastes to figure out what was left, taking to the road with another band of refugees from yet another war.  Ten years on he's still running, even as his future is fast running out.  But all roads lead back to Night City, and some dreams never really die, even though you want 'em too . . .

>>Treasured Thing: A pair of dog tags not his own.

>>Goal: Kat would say he's just here for the eddies; floatin' his pack some cred before the next hard rain falls.  That's so much crat, tho; he's back in Night city because sometimes a body needs a shock to the system to get a stalled heart beating again.

*The justification for handle changes with the year and the crew Tristan runs with. Some crews think it's on account of his reflexes, of his odd cybereyes. Others - some of his pack especially - think it's short for catalytic, on account of his early works boosting catalytic converters from vehicles for recyc or resale. Some less favorably inclined say it's short for Catastrophe, given the ill luck that seems to sometime dog his steps on the heels of principled but ill advised stands.

He knows the truth; it was her handle, back when. On account of, back in the war, the joke was Kat had had nine lives. Or did. She outlasted eight panzers - and partners - before he came along.

**Addenda: laying this out to be explicit with expectations - there's not persona engrams or brainghost shenanigans going on. She's dead. Hes not. We're dealing with PTSD and survivors guilt here, not MPD/DID..
**This is intended to be frakked up. Whether they were intimate IRL before things went south is up in the air and I might play unreliable narrator with it, but if he didn't love/have a crush on her before then, the way she died and the way he was inside her head at the time messed him up big time. Love is an easy story to tell yourself, especially if you don't know how to handle guilt and shame. And maybe it's true. We all have worlds inside us and he got a glimpse of hers before she passed, and that just might have been enough . . .

Maybe not finished, but the broad strokes are down.  Will be interesting to adjust my expectations - I'v eplayed a LOT of CP2020 so having to unlearn some stuff here . . . Also still need to roll the lifepath: I've got some things I'm slotting in (CLEARLY 😃) but I still need to flesh out other known persons and his pack, etc.

One quick note, REDs start date in the timeline is a bit wibbly-wobbly - if we're starting earlier in the RED era (2039 or so) Tristan would be 31 if I mathed his history out right, and he would have gone AWOL in 2025/2026 during the last days of the 4th Corporate War.

Character Name: Richard "Ricky" Fortune
Role: Lawman

Handle: Badge 22
Gender Identity: Male

Background

I was just an ordinary kid, born and raised in Harlem, New York just after the turn of the century. I didn't have some rough childhood or fall in with some Boostergang, Rockerboy or some bullahit. Nah, didn't happen like that. I had good folks and was looked after, y'know? Went to school, knocked around with a few buddies and got up to mischief. Just like any brat of the noughties.

Ricky Fortune took a sip of whiskey from his tumbler before pulling out a packet of "Aces" from his breast pocket. Flicking the packet a cigarette popped out and he extracted it from the pack with his mouth. Grabbing his silver paraffin lighter, classic 98' model, he struck the flint and lit the tobacco and took a long draw before exhaling and filling the booth with thick, blue smoke.

So, how d'ya end up in Night City, Rick? the Rookie asked, sipping his synthetic lemon tea.

Ricky sat back in his booth and paused for a moment, swirling his whiskey glass and watching the two cubes of ice spin in the dark liquid.

My folks had a dream. The American dream. Nuclear family. 2.4 children or some whacked idea of paradise. They were corpo's man, so I guess just followed the money. They just picked the wrong side in the end. The detective took another puff on his cigarette, letting the smoke dance slowly towards the ceiling. You want another tea? He asked his partner.

No thanks. Was the money in NC then?

Ricky snapped his fingers at the waitress ordering another large whiskey. I wasn't really old enough to remember, or to be interested. He answered. Truth is, I guess i was sold on the yarn my parents spun me. The newest city in America, yadda yadda. Damn man, i was barely heading into my teens when we got our shitty conapt out here. Ricky looked over the bar room to a wall of screens displaying the latest propaganda from Night City.

Listen choom, he said turning back to his companion. Not long after we moved here, shit went down. I was born in the midst of the second Corp war, so new no different, but the third...I was old enough to understand and it was thrown in our faces every goddamn day. Ma n' Pa ended up fallin' foul of the 2016 Cyber Assault. They had stocks. Shares man. Lost the fucking lot. Within a week, we had nothing and they couldn't even afford to pay the rent... Ricky swore to himself. Desperate times, man.

So all this Corpo, Cyber bullcrap....how on earth did that make you become a cop?

Ricky stared at his partner with a long, icey gaze as he recalled just why he became a man of the law. Listen, Pete. Desperate times make for desperate measures. My Pa lost everything and began to turn to drink. Ma nagging in his earholes daily, and rightfully so. It was his duty to provide, and he wern't. He turned to the dark, got in with a bad crowd, y'know?

Pete nodded in understanding.

He ended up getting involved in a gig of some unknown. A Fixer by the name of Baz Oldham. Long in the turf now though, good fucking riddance. Ricky paused for a moment as he recalled the past. The gig involved some highly illegal profiteering and my old Pa thought he could one up Baz and siphon some 'eddies of the top. As if these guys wouldnt know if a nickel went missing. The whole gig got messy and some other boostergang got in on the action and Baz ended up losing out. Suffice to say, Baz turned out to be the kind of Bag Man you dont **** with. Has Choombas in high places.

Sounds messy. Pete interjected. Ricky nodded and gulped down what remained of his whiskey.

Messy aint the word. Baz called in some Wise Guys from Watson who set this whole case up against me Pa. Raided the hole we were livin' in and iced me Ma. God rest her soul. Me Pa then got rigged for a bust and was tried for her murder. Got sent down and has been doing bird for the last few decades.

And that's what made you want to be a cop? Jeezus Rick!

Yeah kind of. I wanted to bang up these lowlifers. Make 'em pay for what they did. Whack a few on the way, y'know? The streets man, get worse by the day and I just wanna make it better. If not for my Pa, then in the name of me Ma. Rick paused for a moment and stared at the bottom of the whiskey glass. Trouble is... he took a long sip. Bein' a cop just don't pay the bills...
