TRINKETS

  • A metal urn containing the ashes of a hero:  This urn contains the ashes of his own father, who also was a royal guard, very notorious.  He's the one who inspired Bardin to this career, and he fought bravely and valiantly defending the royal family until his death, under the swords of Drows invading the hold.

  • A rabbit's footHow do you serve a king for almost two centuries, without even a single hair of his liege missing or any attempt from enemies being successful?  Sure, there is a share of skill and the blessing of Helm, but also a good share of luck.  He was given by one of his fellow guardsmen this rabbit foot, and Bardin really believes that it provides the extra luck he had all his life.  Guardsmen are really superstitious creatures.

APPEARANCE

Age  246  | Height 3'10'  | Weight 150  lbs  | Hair WhiteEyes Dark Grey | Complexion Reddish fair

Bardin is small and lean, not as doughy as the usual dwarf.  Despite being quite scrawny, he has an extremely solid body and toned/firm muscles.  A lot of nerves too.  He normally speaks with an old baritone voice, quite a contrast with his appearance.  His white long beard is going a bit under his belt, showing that he has cut it at least a couple times during the last two centuries.  His hair is cut short for utility, as he can't stand them to be oily and damp after long hours wearing a helmet.  Despite his years serving as a royal guardsman, he surprisingly got no scar at all.

His skin is fair, but reddish from the health like a young Dwarf would have.  He has very gentle dark gray eyes, who is transpiring the wisdom he accumulated, and his soft and tempered behavior.  They also have a slight tiredness in them, the result of his recent grief from the loss of his wife and childs.

He is always polite, respectful, and never abuses his authority on anyone.  Dedicated and loyal, very honorable but extremely stubborn as you could expect from a Dwarf paragon.  The only flaw is his complaining habits.  He will hassle people who are slacking, complain about his joint pain and other discomfort from his old age.  He may let the ''younger one'' do the menial work and claim that they need to respect him as an elder... But he would take care of the young one like if they were his own child, as the grief left an enormous hole in his earth when they died from the Stoneblood.

  • Bonds:  ''I once met Helm in disguise on the material plane. It changed my life completely, for good.''
  • Flaws: ''Despite my general good health, I sometime feel too old for adventure, and I'll complain about my joints aching, being tired or about how was the old ''and arguably'' better time.''

BACKSTORY

Bardin is one of the oldest royal guards.  He served Finellen's father before as one of his personal bodyguards at the court, and was even one of the few he could call his friend.  The most notorious event in his life was his encounter with Helm avatar, which converted and trained Bardin as one of his cleric, to better serve his liege as a reward for his unfaltering dedication to the protection of his king and the people of his hold.  The God whispered that this lending of power would have a special purpose in his future...

But it had been years, and as Finnellen took his father's place on the thrones, and Bardin station became more honorific as he was becoming old, becoming more of a privileged steward than an actual bodyguard.  It was a quiet life, a good pre-retirement function that was satisfying him.  But came the dreadful event of the plague, the Stoneblood disease who took the life of three of his children and his wife.

The king was in the process of choosing some courageous Dwarves to go on a quest to find a cure and save what was left of his people.  Bardin, convinced that Helm trained and blessed him for this exact purpose, begged Finellen to let him go with the younger Dwarves that were chosen for the task, that they would need his divine powers, arms, life-experience and wisdom to help them to succeed the quest.  Without a doubt, the king accepted, recognizing that the elderly guard was still in shape for this adventure, and that he would protect the other members of the group like he protected his family and the realm for so many years.
