BACKGROUND

Clan Crafter*
Source

  • Personality Traits: I fill my evenings with wine or mead and song.
  • Ideals: Aspiration. I work hard to be the best there is at my craft.
  • Bonds: My family and clan is the most important thing in my life, even when they are far from me.
  • Flaws: I am a glutton. I eat and drink to excess.

Background Feature: Respect of the Stoutfolk

As well respected as clan crafters are among outsiders, no one esteems them quite so highly as dwarves do. You always have free room and board in any place where shield dwarves or gold dwarves dwell, and the individuals in such a settlement might vie among themselves to determine who can offer you (and possibly your compatriots) the finest accommodations and assistance.

BACKSTORY

Durlin's father was an Alchemist, his grandfather was an alchemist and if the Revered Mother was willing to grant him a wife, his son would be an Alchemist too.  He had a nose for all things alchemical, like blasting powder for mining, or healing elixirs for healing those caught in the cave ins caused by the blasting powder, or brewing ale to sooth the hearts of those who'd been lost in those horrible accidents.  He loved his alchemy, but he wasn't satisfied with the old recipes, they were good alright, but Durlin was raised on stories from his grand pappy, like the tale of the golden stout, or the blood red porter, by hell or rye lager.  As such he was always searching for new ingredients in the valley and deeper into the cave warrens.  He took opportunities to delve and so forth as well, and spent all his earnings on trade goods that could be made work would fit down some sort of muzzle, be it dwarf or gun.  His grand pappy did love guns, he remembered a time before firearms when blasting powder was used in kegs for mining, and there was little he enjoyed more than downing a keg with his grandson, filling it with powder and then firing rounds into it from a "safe distance".

During one such escapade, they accidently unsealed an old cavern and a mess of drakes came through.  Just another bit of Highhome luck, one might suppose.  They were fighting them for a good few months before they managed to get the population under control.  It did work out for trade and crafting.  Durlin and his family managed to secure quite a load of drake blood from the broodmother for elixirs and whatnot, but the fool youngster of 70years accidently drank it.  He'd been on quite the binge, celebrating the eradication of the drake with the cragwardens, finding a keg in the brewery, he drank it and stumbled off into the warrens. The other thing he brought with him was an egg, quite the large egg, that would have made for best snack.  Throughout the night he'd had the most insane of dreams, he was speaking to dragons, have beer with them, making bets of some sort, he couldn't recall.  He awoke in a cave, cuddled into the egg, and somewhat covered in their own vomit.  It was then he realized the egg was empty, something had crawled out the back, that same something was finishing his spew, and licking his armor clean.

The creature seemed intelligent enough, and now had assumed that Durlin was its mother or master or some such thing.  He named it Drizzol, as the lil bugger seems to love everything that drizzles down Durlin's beard to the floor.

Driz has been around for a few years now, but hasn't grown a massive amount, but he's about the size of a badger... and has apparently died a few times, vanishing into a pile of acid when he does... but the next day the lil shit appears again, crawling out from under Durlin's beard as if he'd hatched to the size he was the day before.  That just so happens to be where he keeps a vial of dragon blood in a small steel vial, a bit of blood left over from the keg he'd drank those many moons ago.

Lately everyone's been super worried about this stoneblood disease, and both his father and mother have died from it, and he keeps his Pa's ol' drinking horn, or was it a powder horn?  It was a horn, it was large and was green for some reason, who knows what was kept in it, but Durlin uses it for drinking and will continue doing so.  He also inherited his all-purpose tool, a great lil rig for just about anything.  His Pappy's still alive and working on a cure, but Durlin' was called before the king as a part of a group to be buggered off on a last ditch run to see if they could save the clan.

The king was pretty swell about it, gave him some drakeskin scale and a wee glowy sword.  His pappy gave him his very own pistol, which was also pretty damn swell.

He could be like ol' Brightbeard himself now, travelin' the world for knowledge about the best ales and experiment with all sorts of new things, it was better than sitting around here and waiting for your blood to freeze, that was for certain.
