~ Skum Cave ~

~ Month 2, Day 9: Afternoon ~

Battle Map

Ingrid's magic causes a few of Byran's larger wounds start to knit themselves shut to a degree. His wounds are still numerous, though they no longer look to be so life-threatening as they did a few seconds prior. "Ahhh, much better!" Byran exclaims without taking his eyes off the skum facing off against him. He glances over his shoulder quickly to see Ingrid standing behind him, and clearly the source of his healing. "My thanks, Miss Dwarf! I owe you an ale!"

Nancy carefully aims her crossbow. Hitting a target many rows deep into the fray is not without challenges, but she just manages to nick the frog man's shoulder.

Coal loads up her blade, but telegraphs the strike much too early and the battle-savvy skum easily sidesteps the attack.

The group of skum still standing rally themselves for the attack. Most of their attacks are dodged or deflected, though one sneaks through Coalscuttle's defenses to catch her across his shield-carrying arm.

DM: Coal

Skum rolled nat 20 to hit, but no confirm. 7 damage for Coal.

The duergar and tiefling in the cage shift towards the remaining nearby skum as they reach out and try to grab and hold, but they aren't able to get a grasp on him.

The fight waged onward. Muscles were beginning to fatigue, doubts began to grow, and Quim felt no closer to an end to this conflict was near than when it had started. He swallowed, hard, and did his best to push forward.

~ Skum Cave ~

~ Month 2, Day 9: Afternoon ~

Battle Map

Quim's sword thrust impales the fearsome looking skum in his stomach. It reaches slowly for the blade as it tries to steady itself with every last bit of will it can muster, but as Worg latches it's jaws on to the frog man and rips him to the floor. The skum lies motionless and bleeding from its many wounds.

Vannan calls to Byran, "Out of the way," as he stands behind him and waiting for his turn to step in and strike at one of the remaining skum.

Draco eyes the Skum's body, then turns to the front flank who are all being taken out. He gives a curious look, before deciding to hold up one hand. He speaks some words in Draconic, and launches a pair of bolts of light at one of the Skum attacking Coals. The faster they took these down, the faster they could check on the prisoners and find their target.

It feels as though the tide of the battle is turning!

Having hurriedly reloaded her crossbow, Nancy takes aim again. Unfortunately it's hard to get a clear shot on the last few skum, who are being pressed back by her allies. Nevertheless she looses a bolt in their general direction, hoping she might get lucky and hit one before they can do any harm to her friends.

~ Skum Cave ~

~ Month 2, Day 9: Afternoon ~

Battle Map

Draco's energized light slams into one of the nearby skum, sending him briefly into the wall behind him as it grunts through the pain. It struggles to get back into a fighting stance as it slowly raises it's weapon again.

Ingrid warhammer swipes at the same skum and sends it violently back into the wall. This time it doesn't get back up, and stays still on the ground.

Nancy's bolt hits the rocky wall beyond the remaining skum, making a loud crack as it impacts.

Byran, still holding enough dirt in his hand, tosses what remains at the skum's eyes again, hoping to catch it off-guard. He does, and the skum stumbles around as it tries to regain its vision. Byran uses the opportunity to deliver a kick to it's chest and knocking the wind out of it.

Coal slices at the nearby skum, driving her blade deep into it's chest and causing a blast of blood to spray over the area. When she pulls her blade back, it is blood red.

The few remaining skum appear to be in full retreat. The one near Byran takes a few defensive steps back before rushing and diving into the dark water. The skum near Coal and Ingrid keeps its trident up in a guarded posture, but seems more interested in surviving than attacking.

image.png.f4db010a45f9b358cbab714be122bb21.pngVannan pushes his way behind Ingrid and Coalscuttle with more grace than they might expect, until he's free of the crowd and standing next to the lone remaining skum. The fear in the frog-man's eyes is clear, and as Vannan raises his blade and brings it down with a guttural roar there is nothing the skum can do but succumb to the strike and fall to the ground. With the threat gone, Ingrid dismisses her magic with a wave of her hand, and the vines that had so thoroughly overtaken the area recede and disappear within seconds.

spacer.png
"Great work! You bunch r' handy, all right! Now how 'bout gettin' the keys from the leader and lettin' us outta 'ere?" the dark dwarf calls out as he points towards one of the skum bodies.

Sure enough, after a quick search of the indicated skum, you find an iron key on a ring hooked onto his belt. And while he doesn't have much else on him, similar to the other skum bodies in the area, his trident does look to be of a higher quality than the rest in the area, and his shoulder pauldron strapped across his chest is also a unique piece of gear that the other skum don't have.

The surrounding area has a number of ancient, decrepit looking walls, many of which are only half standing. Whatever purpose these structures served is lost to the ages. The only thing standing higher than a few feet is the tower in the distance.

Coals surveys the carnage she and her companions have wrought. She feels... empty. Wasn't she supposed to feel good about winning a fight? But this... she wasn't sure this was a fight she should be fighting.

Well... at least the prisoners were safe...?

Oh right. The prisoners. The duergar.

This was not something she was prepared to face right now. Her jaw tightening, she tried to place herself so that Vannan was between her and the dark dwarf. Not quite like a child hiding behind a parent's legs, but the comparison was inevitable.

Nancy surveys the scene of the battle, her mind finally having chance to catch up with the action.

"Well, um... that didn't exactly go to plan..." she reflects, not quite sure how to feel about this. She'd hoped... what? To have snuck in and out, with these creatures none the wiser? Realistically, could this have happened any differently? "Quim, what were you thinking?" She shakes her head. "We were... we were still planning..."

Draco eyes the bodies and does manage to scrounge up the keys after they get pointed out at. He approaches the cage, but hesitates a moment. "Just to confirm, you aren't going to attack any of us if we release you right?" It would be the right thing to do to release them, but he also wanted a little bit of reassurance that they are all safe now and Coals may want their promise (if she even trusted their word was worth anything). Once he has them swear on it, he goes to unlock the cage door.

The duergar stares blankly at Draco for a moment. Finally a few quick blinks shake him free as he cocks his head slightly and narrows his eyes. "Are ye daft, boy? We just helped you drive off those tadpoles! N' what would we try t' jump ya with, anyhow?!" he yells out angrily as he holds up his empty hands to show he's unarmed. His anger turns to disgust as he shakes his head in dissapointment. "Ya see m'dark skin, and 'is horns," he nods back towards the tiefling behind him, "and y'think we're all bad to our bones. What wrong 'ave we done you? Hmmm? None, that's what."  The dwarf turns away from the party to face his companion, grumbling loudly as he does.

image.png.f4db010a45f9b358cbab714be122bb21.pngVannan doesn't comment on Coal's positioning, but he gives her an accepting nod as he keeps his eyes on the prisoners. Combat was over, but his chest was still heaving from the physical exertion. His blade rests on the ground as it extends from his hand, and is still ready to be wielded again in a second's time, if it is needed.

Draco gives a shrug. "Nothing to me, but some of us have had some really bad encounters with Duergar, so it's more for their benefit. And sorry 'horns', probably should get confirmation from you as well. Didn't assume you were bad since we've only had pleasant experiences so far with Tieflings, funny enough." He tilts his head in the Tieflings direction in a brief nod. Then tilts his head the other way as if listening to something else, before nodding his head. He turns his gaze to the Duerger, his eyes shifting to slits. "I'm going to put a bit of trust in you then. Do not make me regret it." He then starts to unlock the door.

Quim

The tip of the trident touched the cave floor with a wordless tink to remind everyone what metal hitting rock sounded like. A harsh difference to Vannan's gutteral roar and death stroke. Quim watched as the final skum fell silent and still as the bloodlust of the fight drained from him. He was tired. He was in pain. And the dancing shadows of the few sources of light made his mind teeter on madness.

He didn't notice some of the others congregate around the cage nor the people inside it. His eyes were on the distant tower and his mind was having a bastard of a time keeping focused. When Nancy approached, he barely recognized her presence. It was his name that broke him from his muddied trance.

He paused a moment, needing to repeat the words she'd said in his mind to even recall what she was talking about. After the echoed through the fog, he shrugged. "It was a chance to pick them off. I took it." His voice was neutral and hadn't a lot of sympathy in it, mirroring his face and his lowered weapon.

Worg - Baldur's Gate 3 Wiki

Worg

The beast too finds the unwinding after battle to be somewhat difficult to shake. The worg sneezed two times before dropping to its hind quarters and licking at a wet spot on his left haunch. Loud, wet noises came from its muzzle as blood and saliva mixed.

Quim unconsciously put his free hand out to touch the beast, but without bending down he wasn't able to reach it. Instead, his hand hovered over it like a holy man's blessing. When he realized what he was doing, he bent down and did his best to pull the worg's face out of the wound without getting bit himself.

"I didn't see the lookout towers. But how could I when we couldn't even scout ahead without everyone being right behind me and then stopping like that?"

~ Month 2, Day 9: Afternoon ~

spacer.pngspacer.png

As Draco turned the simple, iron key and unlocked the cage, the duergar turned to face his liberator. His disapproving sneer slowly faded to a more neutral expression, and eventually a reluctant smile. "Baaaaah!" he finally relented and exclaimed loudly with a broad grin. "I knew ye'doo the right thing." The grey-skinned dwarf throws his muscular arms around Draco, who lets out an ooof as the dwarf squeezes his waist and stomach. As he releases Draco he's already spinning around to look past the party towards the South. "C'mon, Pox! We need t' find Euni! Those skum suckers better notta hurt 'er..." he grumbles as he starts heading South towards the ruined walls and the tower beyond.

The tielfling, who moves with more intention, even grace, steps out of the cage. While he doesn't offer anyone an embrace, he does bow politely to Draco and the rest of the group, and softly adds, "Thank you." He keeps his eyes mostly to the ground, and only occasionally meets the gaze of the group members. The one notable exception to this was with Nancy, who found the tiefling's gaze quickly swinging back towards her a few times before dropping back to the floor or moving on to someone else.

As the two former prisoners moved South, they quickly searched behind the various ruined walls and buildings. The dwarf appeared nearly frantic, but was able to maintain some semblance of composure. "Euni! Euni!" he called out loudly, unaware or unconcerned of any associated danger. Finally, not far from the group, as the dwarf poked his head around a barely standing corner-shaped structure of some fallen building, he let out a wail of sheer joy. Disappearing behind the wall for a moment, which gave the tielfing time to catch up, when he came back into view he was holding a small animal: a goat.

"Oh, my dear! Don't scare me so!" the dwarf continued to call out as he nuzzled the goat's neck and stroked it's back. The tielfing took a moment to appreciate the scene, and offered the goat a few soothing strokes along its back as well. His attention turned to whatever else was behind the wall, and the tiefling leaned over and offered a hand to help up the person who had been holding the goat prior to their arrival.

Cessah.jpg.f03a4f38a12908686f889e45afccf6e9.jpg

As the figure stepped out from behind the wall, her hands were in shackles and tethered to the ground by a long chain. Even so in her dirty and battered state, her striking features were immediately recognizable to you. You had no doubt in your minds that you were once again face to face with Cessah.
