Who laughs last?!

spacer.png

Both Aura and Dez managed solid cuts at the beast. But it either didn't notice or didn't care. It just kept going. The rampaging monster was surprisingly swift and coordinated in its movements and tactics. With Dez in close proximity it lunged for her with nasty teeth and tusks, aiming for her leg. Only this time the weaponsmith was not fast enough and the gruesome boar latched onto her, viciously chomping down onto her calf.

"AAARHGHHHHH!" Dez roared in pain as the boar shook her leg in a blatant attempt to tear it off maybe. While Dez, for her part, did everything humanly possible to keep her appendage and fend off the worst of the boar's attack with her hefty axe. And just when the Bloodren thought she would pass out from the viciousness of the onslaught and the pain and blood loss, the deranged boar let go of her with a smug look about it. If boars could even project such a thing as smugness?!?

Dizzy and weakened by the attack Dez mustered all her remaining strength, fighting to stay conscious. She propped her huge axe on the ground and pulled herself with shaky arms to a standing position, eyes observing the lunatic beast through a haze of dizziness. Dez shook her head to clear her vision, leaning heavily on the axe's handle. Her breath came out in labored pants.

"You're having fun, eh, monster?!" Dez directed at the beast. The boar looked positively delighted with the damage it'd done to her leg. "Well, let's see who laughs last!" The Bloodren challenged, drew herself straighter, gripped the axe in both hands and prepared to swing with all her might at the hellish boar!

Shaking off a feeling of disgust from the sight of the mutant boar, Aura rolled into her next pose. The katana was an agile weapon, and one she hoped to master one day. Her right arm was pulled back, left arm extended, fingers holding the tip of the blade in a "V" shape.

Coyo wanted nothing to do with the beast, and Aura wasn't exactly keen on sending him against a potentially diseased creature.

Realizing her prepared counter-attack went unnoticed as the boar tried to eat Dez' leg, Aura dove back toward the beast. She tried to follow through on her attack anyway, going for the soft underbelly just behind the ribcage. She'd have to strike a new spot to avoid...whatever that hardening material was. She held back another gag.

Dez getting to her feet in the face of the injuries she'd already taken, especially the bite to her leg, was admirable, and the boar kept it's eyes on her - which gave Aura the perfect opportunity to strike. She stabbed at the ribcage, near the belly, the blade slipping easily between the bones. More blood spilled forth, and though it hardened again quickly, the boar's legs sagged a little, and it's movements as it started to circle around, as if to attack Dez again, seemed slower, sluggish, perhaps dragged down by the weight of the hardened blood-carapace.

Unfortunately for Dez, as she tried to swing her axe against the boar, the injury to her leg intereferred - her leg buckled under her, and as she swung, the weapon hit the dirt next to the boar, the force behind the blow enough to drive the blade into the ground several inches, as the injured leg gave way and she fell to one knee, and then fell over onto one knee. Getting her weapon out of the ground would take time, and would not be a simple prospect, and the Boar seemed ready to charge again, focusing on Dez with a mad, angry fury. It paid almost no attention to Aura, even as the blood hardened over it's sides was from the assassin's blade.

This is all your fault, Zed!

spacer.png

Dez realized she'd made a dire mistake in attempting to attack the boar with a bum leg the moment she hoisted the axe up in the air. The huge weapon was of respectable heft even with two good arms and legs to bear its brunt. But with a leg that could barely carry Dez's own weight, let alone balance a weapon and moreover, performing an attack maneuver... She was doomed before she even started!

Immediately her injured leg buckled. The axe stuck innocuously next to the monstrous boar. And Dez crumbled onto herself. She had little chance of getting back up without using the axe for support. And in her current condition she wasn't capable of digging the thing out of the dirt where it had wedged itself. And now the bloody boar was charging her again!

I swear to all the gods, Zed, if I die on this bloody continent while trying to save your sorry ass, I'm gonna be pissed at you for all eternity and haunt the hell out of you if you somehow manage to outlive me!

Dez squared the boar with a fiery gaze. And you, ugly beast, you think you got me right where you want me?!? Come at me! The weaponsmith thought as she prepared for the boar's charge. She didn't have that many alternatives, but she knew one thing... She would go down swinging!

"No! Dez!" Aura cried out as she was at the mercy of the monstrous boar. "Don't tell me a little thing like this will do you in, mighty Bloodren?!" she said, hoping Dez could push through the pain and find a way.

Then, she pulled it off and socked it in the nose. Aura hadn't been at an angle to see it, but the boar stopped short in it's charge. It still was full of fight and Aura knew it needed a little more tenderizing.

Dashing forward into a roll, Aura swept her blade with speed across the beast's haunch, hoping to hamstring its movement.

"C'mon, have at thee, swine!" she shouted.

Both Dez and Aura managed to hit it this time, but their blows left them both exposed. Dez's strike managed to hit the boar, actually slicing through the skin around one of the tusks and chopping the whole extraneous extrusion of bone off entirely. She gave it her all, and she was still standing, but the boar was too, and it was furious, the fact that it seemed to be near death not stopping it at all. Indeed, it was even angrier, and the bulges under it's skin seemed to grow larger and the boar moves faster as it tries to circle around to attack Dez again. But then Aura strikes it, and she aims for the back legs and indeed, manages to hit it, cutting above the hamstring.

Letting out an angry roar, drawing up short in it's attempt to charge at Dez, the boar, covered in hardened shells of blood, weighed down by the same protective shell that closes off it's injuries, turns towards Aura. It couldn't really charge at her, the angles and distances were all wrong, but Aura was practically right next to it, and it could thrust it's tusks into her leg. Kicking up a storm of dust, the enlarged bulges twisting and squirming under the skin, the shells of dried blood rippling like water, yet paradoxically remaining hard and protective. Bucking against her, it tries to gore Aura's leg with it's tusks, eyes blazing madly, it's whole body shaking and rippling, squirming and twisting.

Time for lights out, boar!

spacer.png

Bloody and dizzy with it and tired Dez still mustered all her remaining strength to give the hideous boar one last shock in the muzzle. The monster was visibly incensed by this fact and the fact it was on its last legs. But its stubbornness won out and it still stood and Dez could see in its eyes it wanted... it would charge at her again.

Fortunately for the weaponmaster the best didn't get the chance as Aura swiftly intervened, slashing it's hind-legs out from under it. More angry squeals followed as the boar kicked up a dust storm of vitriol and frustration at being thwarted. It lashed at Aura this time, managing to gore her leg, insanity glinting in its eyes.

The moment the beast's attention was off Dez, she stuffed a hand in a pouch on her waist. She wasted no time throwing whatever she'd grabbed from it all over her wound. The numbing herbs began acting almost immediately. Fast enough to allow her to stand with little to no perceived pain. Certainly fast enough for her to grab her axe, swing it high and bring it swiftly down onto the unsuspecting creature.

"Time for lights out, boar!" Dez roared as the axe came down onto the monster's head.

Journey (To Second Hope) (Troublesome)

* * *

Though Aura failed to dodge the boar's attack, as she staggered back and stumbled, she managed to push through the pain and pull herself back up to her feet. The boar, having transferred it's fury to Aura, was distracted by it's foe failing to be as hurt as it should be, and it started to charge at her again - started, because the moment it's cloven feet dug into the ground to propel itself forward once again, Dez axe came crashing down on it's skull. The Blow broke through the skin, muscle and bone, exposing brain and digging into it. The blow cut through nerves, and the boar dropped to the ground, short of Aura, twitching any time Dez's axe twitched, but it was very quickly dying, and would be dead in a matter of seconds.

Both Aura and Dez were bleeding, haggard, winded and wounded, but the strange mutated, warped boar that had given them so much trouble was no longer problem now, at least. Anywhere else, one might be tempted to cook and eat the thing, but from the greenish growths under it's skin, the blood-hardening, and the general... everything about the boar, that eemed not a good idea.

Either way, the forest quickly went still and silent, the hovering orb of light still present, providing the only illumination in the dense forest. There appeared to be paths out, but the orb was no longer guiding them. It seemed to move with them, but it did not take the lead.

  • 2 weeks later...
spacer.png
With the boar dead, Aura's body gave way to the her lack of energy. She let out all the tension, her sword dropping to the ground softly as she fell onto her back.

"Gods that was close!" she exclaimed through a sigh. She stared up at the leaves trying to choke out the sky.

"Whatever that...thing is, I don't think it's getting back up. And we definitely shouldn't eat it! Disgusting boils..."

Coyo padded over from the underbrush, tail and head low as if he knew he was in trouble. He walked close to Dez and sniffed at her wound as if asking permission to clean it with his bristling tongue.

Aura pushed herself back to her feet and seethed with pain as she put weight on the hurt leg. "Oh, damn, that's gonna need some time to heal." She looked at Dez and limped closer. "What about you? Can you even walk? You look terrible," she said, but a moment later added, "Oh, uh, sorry, didn't mean like... Gods, it was easier when all I did was put people down, not help them up..."

The two of them were able, with some difficulty, to find a space, not too far off the path, that seemed well shaded, and with enough open space to give them some warning if someone or something else attacked. The light, at least, followed them, and freed them from that oppressive feeling of being watched, still. The clearing was off the main path, and they'd had to cut through some undergrowth to get to it, but not much, and though the undergrowth had grown back, it didn't grow back enough that they couldn't get back on to the path they were on.

It was a good thing their clearing had good tree cover, because as they patched their wounds, at least a little. It wasn't much, especially in Dez's case, but the bleeding was stopped, the wounds were covered and the pain was more than manageable. Nothing permanent, at least, beyond a few minor scars, if that. But with the tree cover, they were protected from the rain that passed over the forest, only a small drizzle getting into their clearing, and not enough to really cause any issues, but had they not had so much tree cover...

The Wracked Coast earned it's name once more as wind started to picked up and whistle through the forest, the effect of it passing through the trees sounding like whispers and mumbles. And yet - the presence of the orb seemed to soothe their minds, preventing them from reading too much into those, whispers, preventing the whispers from sounding more real then they were. It was warding off the magic of the forest.

They were able to have a bit of food and start a small fire, with the supplies they had, and it didn't even seem to take up that much of their food. Though best to avoid harvesting anything edible from this forest, given the state of that boar.

Sleeping in shifts allowed them each to get a few hours rest, at least, and they both found the rest to be oddly calm, unusually restful relative to what they'd had so far on the continent.

Black and blue!

spacer.png

Finally, mercifully, the boar went down and stayed down! Dez waited a bit... Then two. Three! Before she dropped to the ground like a sack of potatoes. Her head thudding against the forest floor. Her arms flopping tiredly at her sides.

"You can say that again!" Dez answered Aura's comment on how close they'd come to biting the dust. "I'm with you on the not eating it part. But I'd be curious to rummage around it's corps. I may not be Zed, but I was a Bloodren. Knowing what makes monsters tick is kinda the bread and butter of knowing how to dispose of them..." Dez spoke from her sprawled position on the ground. Not moving even the tiniest muscle. Everything hurt. Aside from the actual gaping wound on her leg, which still benefited from the numbing herbs she'd thrown on it.

So when Coyo padded close to her and gently asked permission to lick her wound clean in an an apology of sorts for bailing on them, Dez just chuckled as she blocked his access to her injury. But giving him a few scritches behind the ear to lessen the sting of the rebuttal.

"It's okay, big guy. I appreciate the gesture, but there are some herbs in there you really shouldn't ingest. How about you just stand guard while me and your mommy tend to the aftermath of this clusterf*ck, eh?"

Dez gave herself some extra time just lying there, resting, before she slowly dragged herself to a sitting position in order to properly asses the damage to her leg. The injury was severe and it was only through some astonishing luck that the beast hadn't permanently maimed and mangled her. As it stood, she would have some nasty-ass scar, but she didn't think her mobility would suffer any. At least not after the wound had fully healed. Before that happened, she would be sporting a limp. Which meant, she would be wise to invest in some sort of walking aid.

One thing was for sure, they would need to spend the night before even thinking of moving on.

The next morning came too soon. But the trio was rested and relatively patched up.

"Well, then..." Dez gave Aura a crooked grin. "Easy does it..." She waved around the sturdy walking stick she'd fashioned herself before turning in last night.

Journey (To Second Hope) (Troublesome)

* * *

Examining the corpse of the boar proves to be a messy, and gross affair. The boar's thick, syrupy, dark red blood was quick to harden on exposure to the air, and so it was some effort to keep it from glopping onto Dez's hands and staying there. Made worse was trying to avoid the greenish... whatever it was. The boar seemed to be a boar, all said and done, just... warped and twisted, the bulging, unnatural muscles, the thick blood, the extra tusks, and so forth. But digging into the body did yeild a few more indications as to what was different.

Or at least, one thing that was different. The greenish growths, on closer examination, proved to be a very, very, very tightly packed pus that held together like glue, but could quickly return to a weird liquid state, filled with little bits and pieces. Digging underneath those with her tools and weapons, revealed the sourece of the pus, maybe - at the base of each growth, lay a black worm that had burrowed into the boar, extruding the greenish pus behind it. The worm seemed focus on burrowing into the corpse further, and seemed to have no real notice of them, or the fact that it's meal was dead. However, a bit of experimentation quickly proved one thing - the worms hated fire. Trying to take one, or the entire corpse, closer than about ten feet from the fire, quickly elicited a squirming, wriggling response - they fled out of the corpse in that case, into the forest, away from the fire. Bringing one closer by force made the worm quickly start to shrivel, drying up like a corpse in a desert, but very, very quickly.

Fire, at least, seemed a defense against these parasites.

The next day, they all seemed to be without strange growths under their skin - Coyo included - and thus seemed to be worm free. But their attempt to try to carve out a path through the forest was once more a failure. They hacked through some of the undergrowth, but between it's habit of growing back quickly, and the lack of a clear idea which way was actually going to get them out of the forest at this point, they failed to make any progress, and ended up moving partially in circles - early on their found a tree that had another tree of a different species growing out of it's trunk, and later on, they ended up back at that very same tree.

Though this time, they weren't alone.

Perched up on the upper branches of the three was a thin, emaciated man, with a long beard down to his chest, covered in body hair, and wearing nothing else save for undergarments mad of fur, and a fur cloak. He dropped down from the tree, landing on hands and feet like a cat, jumping up.

"You! YOU! I see you! I heard you! You keep rampaging through my wood! Cutting trees and lighting fires! You need to stop that! You need to get out of my forest! Out!" He spoke with a frantic, manic energy, his eyes wide and blotchy, red with lack of sleep or illness or something. He had few remaining teeth, what were there in his mouth were broken, yellowed and jagged. His fingernails were long and filthy, and he was drawing closer to them, sounding furious. "You keep cutting and lighting and killing and the Wood will Cut and Light and Kill you, and then will you be, Hm?!" He pointed in their faces, getting close, though he didn't touch them. They did see that he had some growths under his skin. Familiar-looking ones at that.

Aura was no stranger to gore and gruesome scenes--often which were created by her--but she wanted nothing to do with the boar's dissection.

"I'll leave you to that..." she'd said to Dez. Instead, Aura tended to the fire and spent time with Coyo, bonding with him a bit more in the downtime. He was much friendlier than he had any right to be, given his previous owner's anger. It was only through their mystic bond Aura was able to be close to the leopard.

When Dez found the parasite, and its subsequent weakness to fire, Aura felt her stomach churn. "By the Gods! I knew that creature was sick but that is horrific! If fire keeps those away, we should keep fire with us for the rest of our journey in this forest."

The next day's travel proved hopeless and Aura pointed at the same weird tree they'd already passed. "Does that one look familiar? I think we've been--Wait! What!?" she began to muse, but was cut off by a strange feral man. Immediately her blade was pulled free of its confines and she took a defensive posture.

"Keep your distance! Lest my blade find a new home in your chest! We are only passing through but can't find our way out. We would, in fact, be happy to leave if we could find a clear path but this place... twists and turns... Wait... you don't look well." Aura kept her blade between herself and the man. Coyo growled low in his throat and began to pad around to the side.

"Dez... he has those same bumps the boar did. I think he has parasites too..."

"Well? I've never been better! Always been better! Now get gone from my woods! No burning, no cutting, just leave! Leave!" He snarled, pulling back a bit to stay out of range of the blade. "The wood doesn't like intruders! It's my wood now!" He cackled madly, "The wood Hungers, if you stay you get to be food. Food for the trees, food for the woods, food for the worms! Worm food! HA!" He skittered backwards, then forwards, grinning. "Worm food, worm food! Food for worms, food for the wood! Food for wood and worms, that'll be you! You want to leave and you can't, but you must leave or you'll die! Maybe I'll eat you before the worms! How do you like that?!"

He didn't actually come towards them or make a hostile move, just started ranting and cackling in a language neither of them understood, though it sounded like something Aura heard in her days with pirates

Dez began to entice the crazed man, gaining his attention just enough that Aura was able to dart away the moment he turned. She dove into the underbrush as she'd seen Coyo do and then kept up her pace, darting between a few trees so he wouldn't know exactly where she would come from.

The tension couldn't last or the opportunity would be lost. Aura burst forth from a bush on the other side of the man, leaping forward with a rope in her hands. Her arms wrapped the start of the rope around him as the two hit the ground. She rolled sideways into a kneel and whipped the rope around his midsection a few times before pulling it around his ankles and then holding it taut.

"Help me make sure he's secure!" Aura said to Dez as she tried putting a boot into the man's spine. "I'm sorry, but this is for your own good!"
