spacer.pngName: Elendris Vessicari

Description/Personality:

Elendris is a tall elf woman with proud shoulders, a pensive yet enigmatic expression, and eyes that held a piercing stare. She does not hide her double set of horns and long elven ears, instead displaying them proudly. If a tavern grows hushed at her entrance, or glances and whispers are thrown her way, she does not give any indication that she notices such behavior at all.

For those who are not too shy to approach her, Elendris banters with graceful etiquette, as long as one stays respectful. She says that she is from the Shadow Realms, out to explore and enjoy what Midgard has to offer, and quite enamored to meet you in fact. After subtle flattery and exchange of introduction as well as small talk, she tells of her current venture - to investigate the rumors surrounding the Scarlet Citadel, where tales tell of old riches and magic buried beneath. In fact, she is looking for like-minded, capable individuals, for only fools delve into unknown depths alone.

Below is not in-character knowledge to other player characters:

Although Elendris would have preferred a longer and safer way to advance in the mortal realms than delving into a dangerous dungeon, she has been called upon to repay a Fey debt by investigating the Scarlet Citadel and the Shadow Road therein. Deep inside, she is very worried and uncomfortable, but to show such emotions would be signs of weakness.

Practical and patient, Elendris knows that she cannot afford to offend even the mortal races. For a Shadow Fey to toy with mortals who visit the Shadow Realm would be one thing (and is even expected in order to avoid shame), but for someone of her power to antagonize major races in the Midgard would be foolish. She stays optimistic though, since her time in Midgard has proved that people here are rather simple and easy to maneuver around, if a bit rude and lacking in Shadow Fey sensibilities.

For now, Elendris feels the need for allies. Some of them even look capable and distinguished enough for friendship.

Character Questions:

Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character. These can be a concept overview, a list of important life events, a physical description, a personality profile...whatever you need to get an image in your mind. 5 is just a minimum...more elements are encouraged!

Elendris comes from a family that had long lost the favor of Sarastra. Finding most doors closed to her in the Shadow Realm, Elendris ventured out to the mortal realms to pave a path for herself. She is open to new, untried ideas, and has initiative.

Though mortals may think the Shadow Fey a rude and condescending race, that is a natural result of how much Shadow Fey value status. For someone to treat an outsider (who has unproven status) in an equal manner would be implying to the world that one is equal in status to the outsider. Of course, that is an extremely risky thing for a Shadow Fey to do, so the overall effect is that mortals visiting the Shadow Fey courts or cities face a very dismissive reception.

But that does not mean that the Shadow Fey lack the social graces. A shadow elf needs to avoid offending someone higher in status and more powerful. A slipped expression of anger could result in bodily harm, or worse, public humiliation in retaliation.

The above was prefaced to saying that Elendris - as a visitor to the mortal realms and not powerful by any stretch - is perfectly cordial with those she wants to be cordial with.

She values capability, panache, daring and initiative. She may make friends of those she finds respectable, even if she and they were initially enemies.

Upon coming to the mortal realms, Elendris realized mortals can be powerful and capable (though they can never be as stylish as the Shadow Fey). She seeks to establish useful relationships of mutual respect, or find those that will follow her lead.

"A good leader makes sure that it is worth it for her followers to follow her. The Shadow Fey follow the Queen, in part because it benefits us as well. The Queen allows us to adapt to the Shadows, and protects us from things that may threaten us"

She is confident and cool-headed, with her emotions rarely reaching extremes. Strong emotions such as joy and wrath are long lost and unfamiliar to the Shadow Fey, and so Elendris finds such emotions amusing (as long as they are not displayed in a crass manner).

While Elendris is unpredictable to those in the mortal realms, that does not mean that she is capricious. There is a pattern to the behavior of the Fey, if one can understand them. Furthermore, Shadow Fey have long lives, and a prank - or a grudge - could be repaid in a decade-long scheme.

Step 2: List at least two goals for the character. At least one of these goals should be one that the character has, while another should be one that you, as a player, want to see developed over the course of the game.

Elendis would like to become a major voice in the party, one that the party slowly, without realizing, grows a habit of listening to.

Finding and activating a Shadow Road may be a very valuable asset to the Shadow Fey. One obvious benefit to Selendis would be benefit to her status by reporting it to one of the Shadow Fey leaders (Queen, Prince, or leaders of other enclaves), but if there are other options that makes more sense for Elendis, she would consider those too.

It would be cool to tempt Elendis with power from another deity, or even better. As a shadow fey whose corruption by shadow causes her to experience emotions in a more muted fashion than the other races, an offer by a good-aligned deity of the light to purge her of the Shadow and allow her to experience full emotions untainted by shadow - such as pure joy, excitement, etc - and turn her into a Paladin of Radiance might be an arc that's very interesting.

Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet. This will help me in creating plots that center around your character.

As long as a Shadow Elf embraces the shadow, one cannot directly act against the Sarastra, the Queen of Night and Darkness. Furthermore, for those with stronger connection to the Shadow in their blood, the bond with the Queen is proportionately stronger. It is well within the power of Sarastra to see, hear, and communicate with her subjects, if she deigns to do so. Selendris is aware of this but believes that she is beneath Sarastra's notice.

Elendris's mother, a Shadow Fey by the name of Kelvara, operates in the mortal realms as head of an organization that brokers information. Elendris is unaware, and if she learns of this, would work hard to prove her worth to said organization.

Step 4: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.

While Elendis has a fondness for flair, she is just as well perfectly satisfied staying back and watch the spectacles unfold.

Information is one of the things that Elendis views as wealth. She'll rarely wish to dole that out to someone else without gaining something, though something as frivolous as a sense of amusement also counts as gaining something. However, Elendis is perfectly motivated to share information to her companions, since she's seeking to gain their well-regard.

She dislikes things that remind her of her father - groveling in front of more powerful fey, getting in deals without knowing repercussions, and false confidence.

Step 5: Use all the above information to put together a background story for the character. It does not have to be an essay but it will help me gauge your writing ability and will be used to help determine the final selection of applicants.

Elendis was born in the City of Lanterns, a city of Shadow Fey in the Shadow Realms. It was a large metropolis with tens of thousands of Shadow Fey. While her family name Vessicari had once carried weight, Elendis's father was a foolish man who had racked up too many debts in his - and Elendis's - name.

When Elendis grew of age, she found that many doors in the City of Lanterns was closed to her due to the tarnished family name in the society. Indignant that she was suffering because of her father's actions, Elendis decided that she would venture out to the mortal realms in order to find her rightful opportunities there. It was not a choice many Shadow Fey made, for how could one defend one's name if one was absent from the city, and the brightness of the mortal realm's sun was debilitating.

She traded a future favors - of equal or less cost to the giver, mind you - for the use of the Shadow Road to Zobeck and another future favor for her safety on that Shadow Road. Finding that Zobeck was rather populated with other Shadow Fey, Elendis took a short while - that is, a year - to gather information, then ventured south on a caravan.

Elendris observed her companions' failed attempts at the door, then looked toward the table being used to barricade the other door in the chamber.

"Well, this room seems like a jailor's chamber. I wonder if the keys would have been kept here, or if it was carried by the jailor."

She walked over to the chair and turned it upside down, tapping for hollowness in the legs and the underside of the seat. Then, she moved over to inspect the table, similarly checking for hollowed-out secret compartments in the table as well. As she inspected them, she noted, "If the key isn't here, I suppose we have no choice to explore past the corpses."
