"The truth of a thing can rarely be discerned through observation alone, you must come to know it, it's strengths, it's weaknesses, to truly understand it.  Otherwise your truth is, in fact, a deception, flawed with ignorance."

Background

Kaikara was born among the Matanji tribe of orcs, born behind the Nine Walls, their racial fortress between the Sodden lands and Usaro, where her people have kept the demonic forces of Angazhan contained for generations.  Her father, M'khuze Khebu, was a warrior of some renown, a veteran who now trained the next generation of demon hunters behind the Second Wall, Kutanju.  However, he had been unable to produce an heir to his name, and began to believe that he had been exposed to abyssal energies for so long, that he was now unable to bear a child to carry on his legacy.  He spoke with many a Matanji mystic of his plight, partaking of virility potions, aphrodisiacs', and other, more esoteric means, by which to sire an heir, to no avail.  Still, he prayed, his great, braided beard, now grey with age, that he would produce an heir, such was his pride in his own skill, that he wished to pass on to his son.

And so, a month of observances at the House of Majagua, Mother Jaguar, and he noted that his mate's belly filled, overjoyed that the Mother had heard his pleas, he prepared for his heir's arrival.  However, the pregnancy was not an easy one, the child had turned, and his mate became sick, and as she came full term, the child was too weak to crawl it's way from the womb, and had to be cut out from the mother's belly.  So great had the trauma been that M'khuze's mate passed, her life passing on to her child, and so M'khuze gave the child his mate's name, Kaikara.  In the months that came, it became clear the Kaikara was frail and weak, her body twisted by the abyssal taint her father carried after countless incursions beyond Usaro's accursed borders.  He became twisted by pride, feeling Mother Jaguar had spurned his prayers, giving him this frail, twisted child, and so he pursued, recklessly, Angazhan's demonic hordes, leaving his child to be raised by her grandmother, Ombawa Nambe.

Ombawa saw past her grand daughter's twisted form, nurturing her spirit, teaching her to identify the many, wondrous plants, flowers, and herbs she collected to create her poultices and potions.  Ombawa would bind Kaikara's form, so her bent and misshapen limbs would straighten, and aided by the plants and herbs, she was soon able to identify, the young Matanji orc began to grow strong, straight, and supple, like a newly formed reed.  However, her father, would not look upon her, for all he saw when confronted with her presence was her taint, the taint that he had passed on to her, so he abandoned her, and his incursions into Usaro grew longer and longer, with months spent before his return.  Kaikara grew up to love her grandmother, listening to stories of her own mother, whose name she bore, but whom she had never met.  She never told her grandmother, but in the darkest nights, she heard a voice, in her dreams, never distinct, never clear, but low, threatening, like war drums felt through the ground, too far away for the beat to be heard by ears alone.  But it was by her mother's grave that the drums were silenced, she soon came to fear the drums, convinced it was the voice of Angazhan calling her home, and that her father, M'khuze, was right about her true nature.

As she grew older, Ombawa soon recognized that her granddaughter would visit her daughter's grave on the darkest of nights and one night met her there, to see why she did so, and why she chose to hide it.  Upon hearing Kaikara talk of the drums, Ombawa feared that if the Matanji heard of this, they, too, would fear her spirit tainted, and put her to the test, one, that if successful, would result in the death of her daughter's daughter.  And so she sent a missive, for she had spent her youth, learning the art of healing, of the plant, and tree, and root, at a university far from the Matanji, in far away Nantambu.  She would see her daughter's daughter attend the halls of the Magaambya Academy.  For it was there that young Kaikara could learn to resist the calling of Angazhan, and reconcile her disparate heritage, becoming something grater than both, and true to herself.

 Appearance

Kaikara is a tall, willlowy Matanji orc, she has a narrow frame, that is packed with lithe, well defined muscle, the result of years of excruciating therapy and exercise.  Born frail and twisted, with the introduction of a specialized diet of herbs and supplements, both mind and body were bolstered to allow treatment of her twisted back and spine.  Even now, her movements are very, economical, with little wasted motion, a hold over from her childhood where any such movement, turn, or twist, would cripple her with pain.  Her most notable feature is the unique blend of orkish and demonic traits in her face, her skin is a drab olive green, in the manner of most Matanji, however, her face is ridged, with a narrow pointed chin, horns that begin at her temples and sweep back over the crown of her skull, coupled with large, bat-like ears that stand out from the side of her face.  At the corners of her mouth she possesses a pair of enlarged canines that protrude up, nearly touching her cheekbone, giving her a feral, almost savage, look.  She wears her thick, coarse, black hair, in a tight braid, pulled back from her horns, exposing them, almost confrontationally, to the public.

Geared for combat, she wears thick hides, secured with broad leather straps, buckled, and tied off, for protection.  A sling wrapped around her left wrist, with a small, iron, buckler attached to her left forearm.  She carried a long hafted war spear, it's broad leaf shaped head and iron cross piece, glinting in the sun.  It's haft carved with Matanji protective wards, meant to protect the weapon's bearer from undue demonic possession.  A spear is slung across the small of her back, and a large, curve bladed dagger is worn in a belt at her hip.

At class she wears a fine robe of greens and golds, a necklace drapped across her collar bone, thick leather, from which hangs a jaguar's claw, and feathers of brown and red.  She keeps her war spear with her, though, typically, uses it as a staff, and wears the sling around her arm, in the event she needs to bring down a rodent, or a bird, for a meal.  She carries her writing journals and academic supplies in an embroidered bag, she keeps slung over her left shoulder.

Personality

Kaikara is an untrusting person, she lived a hard life among her own people, and their distrust of her, and her heritage has diminished her ability to trust those around her.  She feels as though she needs to prove her worth, however, her family consisted, almost exclusively, of herself and her grandmother, Ombawa, so she is out of her element in most social situations, preferring to watch quietly, and not become engaged in anyway that would make her the center of attention.  She patient, observant, but not accustomed to academic pursuits, and while her Grandmother was able to gain her admittance to Magaambya, she does not, entirely, feel as though she deserves to be there.  She is self aware enough to realize that the majority of her peers are smarter than her, more gifted than her, and for all her teacher's kindnesses, they seem to pity her.  The fact that she may have been admitted to this great academy because someone felt sorry for her plight, is slowly gnawing at her self confidence.  She wants to prove her worth, to her peers, to her teachers, and perhaps, most importantly, to herself.
