Brief Backstory

A lock of deep crimson hair wrapped around a pale slender finger.  Her opposite hand held a well-worn book, thumb slowly turning the final page.  Full pink lips curled at the edges, pushing freckled cheeks upwards, causing the reader’s eyes to squint.  "Producing forth the cruel ministers of this dead butcher and his fiend-like queen, who, as 'tis thought, by self and violent hands took off her life; this, and what needful else that calls upon us, by the grace of Grace, we will perform in measure, time and place: So, thanks to all at once and to each one, whom we invite to see us crown'd at Scone."*excerpt from Macbeth by Shakespeare   She reread the final words aloud, cherishing the rhythm and sound of each.  "Oh, Savi, this one was delightful."

Lilith stretched out from her curled position on the cot in her cell.  The stone walls were austere but the man in the neighboring enclosure had managed to procure a few pillows to enhance her sleeping situation.  It was minimal in comparison to his own arrangement, shelves of books, an ornate rug, numerous candles, and incense, along with the many pillows he wouldn’t part with.  She was smart enough to know not to complain about the disparity.  The books he shared, the creature comforts, and even the exotic tea he would serve her, were all things no other inmates had access to.

Charcoal orbs glinted in the candlelight as she approached the metal bars that separated them.  Bella Morte slipped the dark leather-bound book through to her neighbor.  "Might be my favorite yet.  Thank you for the kindness, time here would be a bore without your companionship."  Her words were eloquently spoken without any clear regional accent.

In any other room, with any other audience, Lilith would be the one to have control.  She would be the fiend-like queen, pulling the strands of whoever needed to be her king, for the simple gifts of contraband.  But in a cell beside Savion, The Thorn was nothing more than a minor distraction from the main attraction.  "You know, it’s actually a relief."  He passed her a fine bone-carved teacup, heat from the beverage warmed her hands, and the scent of chamomile calmed her nerves.

"Usually, I orchestrate the emotions of the weak-willed.  It can be exhausting."  Lilith smiled mischievously, chewing on her lower lip.  "There are many out there who would see me similar to the Lady in that tale."  She looked over at the older man, his eyes sparkling with confidence.  They drew her in.  "I don’t know what it is about you, Savi."  Her laugh was lighter than air as she leaned against the cold bars.  The teacup kissed her lips.

"We do what we have to do to survive.  She coaxed her husband to claim his father's throne so she could have the freedom that power would provide.  I simply wanted food at every meal, clothes on my back, and a bed to sleep in.  That isn't too much to ask for."  She knew she wasn't sharing the full truth of it all, but the truth was in there.  "You find your way, right?  You have to.  So, I stole what I needed…then I stole what others asked me to steal, paid me to steal.  Eventually, I took lives."  Lilith looked down at the tea and then back to Savion.  "What is in this?"  She placed the drink down on a small table, convinced he had done something to it.  That was enough honesty for a lifetime.

Other Backstory Notes

Things left unspoken.

  • In Baldur's Gate, Lilith first found guidance in a thieve's guild, their she honed her earliest skills.
  • Not long after her mother passed, when she was 13, the young girl discovered a talent with knives.
  • At 16 recruited by Adamir Hortus, a high-ranking elf in The Crows, an assassin's guild.  She apprenticed with him, learning her craft.  He gifted her her first moniker, The Thorn.  Their relationship was as dangerous as a rosebush.
  • Lilith discovered an art to killing, and she loved it.  By 20 she had added poison to her repertoire and took pleasure in watching the authorities attempt to understand how she did it.  Provided they could even realize there was a murder.
  • After eight years with The Crows, she was commissioned to kill the man who had shown her love.  The coin was more than she had ever seen, too much to ignore.  Lilith gave him the honor of a real death, one he could feel, and let him see the assassin who twisted the knife that slipped below his breast.  She will never forget the sad joy in his eyes as life faded from them.
  • From there, her infamy grew.  Bella Morte became sought after from outside Baldur's Gate.  The street urchin now traveled along the Sword Coast, offering her services to the highest bidder.
  • She connected with the Zhentarim in Watersdeep.  They assisted in establishing the false identity of Lady Magdalena Vetiti, and help to maintain her presence even when Lilith is not in town.  Magdalena has become a useful name in many regions, and while she is rumored to be a handler for The Thorn, no official accusations have been made.
  • Six months ago an urchin attempted to steal from her.  She caught the youth red-handed and quickly passed him to the city guard to do time for his attempted theft.  As she watched the youth be carted away, Bella Morte realized she now had the wealth that the rules she broke were meant to protect.
  • Three months ago she was captured after the murder of Filip Morgenson, a merchant running a growing enterprise.  His daughter had hidden in a closet and was able to identify Lilith.  The trial was quick, now she waits in a cell for the final verdict and punishment.  She expects the gallows before the end of the year.

Extra Credit

Magic Items

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.*excerpt from "A Visit from St. Nicholas" by Clement Clarke Moore

Thank you @DarkAngel for being our D&D Santa Claus.

But Lilith's gifts did not come by surprise
Nor by sleigh and beasts did they arrive
The magic she claimed was hard after sought
By death or theft, not a single was bought...

Hand crossbow +2, (1d4+2) light, reloading... extra-dimensional pocket with 250 bolts

Crossbows really aren't Lilith's preferred method of attack.  It's too impersonal, too distant.  She can't feel the arrow sink into the flesh of a victim as she can a blade.  There isn't an exact science or art to be applied.  But when playing cards, the woman wasn't about to refuse such a valuable weapon as this one.  Hara Aeko cried the night she lost Dream Catcher, and Lilith learned to love death from a distance.

Rapier of Wounding

Deep below the earth of Cormyr, Lilith ventured into the Underdark with three others all commissioned to rescue a princess.  They found their quarry and raided the slavers who had captured her.  Within the vault of the minor drow queen, the rapier was found.  It quickly became the assassin's favored weapon, naming it Woeweaver.

Legendary studded leather +3

Some payments are coin, others are favors yet to be claimed.  But the ones that come in objects are often for the most dangerous and secretive of jobs.  And as such, there is nothing more to share on how she acquired the armor.

Cloak of the Bat

The Museum of Calisham holds many wondrous items.  Relics of the past guarded by well-trained soldiers.  Yet one night, two treasures went missing, not yet to be found.  One, a delicate painting that now hangs in the study of Rupert Rees, the other a cloak that now hangs on Lilith's shoulders.

Ring of protection +2

While exiting the Underdark below Cormyr, on the same trip she found Woeweaver, the party's paladin, Ivark, fell in combat.  He died so they could live.  Certainly, he wished for her to own his ring, he protected her in life, why wouldn't he in death?

Perfume of bewitching (7)

Adamir introduced Lilith to the unique scent of this perfume.  He kept her well stocked with the item during her time with The Crows.  Although her marks, these days, often require a greater ploy than a simple scent, she has become quite fond of it.  Of the original two dozen vials taken at his untimely death, these are all that remain.

Figurine of wonderous power: Onyx dog

Lilith has only been to Neverwinter once, and once was enough.  She would rather bask in the heat of Calishman or Amn before freezing her fair skin off near the Spine of the World again.  But the woman has kept a souvenir of her travel to that wintery scape.  Sven Gramlich may miss the small statuette that had resided on his mantle, though not as much as he probably misses his ear.

Potential NPCs

It seems to me that those from our past need not be living for them to play a potential part in the story.  Below are those who have touched Lilith's life in one way or another.

Name Living or Dead Relationship
Solis & Luna Sortieden Dead Parents of Lilith
Adamir Hortus Dead Mentor & lover
Hara Aeko Living Theif/competition
Rupert Rees Living Client
Ivark Dead Occasional party member
Thalia Grelee Living Occasional party member
Fosco Hogpen Living Occasional party member
Sven Gramlich Living Mark
The Shephard Living Bounty Hunter was bested by Lilith numerous times
Savion Silvertongue Living Friendly cellblock neighbor
