Shadowlands Incorporated: We Take Care Of You Beyond The Shroud.spacer.png

Catherine Giovanni

Clan: Giovanni

Generation: 8th

Concept: Shadowlands Incorporated

Nature: Idealist

Demeanor: Director

Sire: Marietta Giovanni

Date of Birth: 27th of July 1973

Date of Death: 12th of January 1998

Appearance

Frozen by the Proxy Kiss in young adulthood, Catherine looks like a college student even if she dresses up in formal clothing. She has an olive complexion and raven-colored hair of her Mediterranean heritage, even if paler than most. She's attractive but doesn't try to accentuate her appearance beyond what she thinks is professional. The glasses are also for professional aesthetics instead of functionality. She was nearsighted, but it didn't survive the embrace.

Her body language is domineering but stoic instead of playful or boastful. She might seem unapproachable at first glance, but she tends to be friendly enough in conversation, if a bit distant. Interactions with her resemble a doctor trying to ease her patients while they lie on their deathbeds, which does hint at her condition.

Personality

Catherine is analytical, always trying to look at problems or events from differing points of view. She prefers direct, to-the-point analysis, but she's always quick to dispense solutions - her opinions, more accurately - if asked but tends to keep to herself otherwise. She won't say it out loud, but she enjoys people asking her for non-violent exchanges of ideas.

She's a conversationalist but has a warped sense of tact and what's considered acceptable in polite conversation. Catherine will happily talk about morbid subjects like death, examination of corpses, or particularly gruesome ends in polite society or blindsiding someone in a casual setting.

In a way, death and rot are parts of her every night. Unbeknownst to no one else but her sire, Catherine perceives the world on the edge of Oblivion. Buildings appear dilapidated and collapsing, mortals are walking cadavers with rotting visages, and even the rare supernaturals she encountered look as if they're at the point of their deaths. Cainites, of course, appear as if they're corpses in the advanced stage of decomposition, nothing but bones and skins.

When you perceive everything as rot and death, you tend not to be overly impressed with glamour and beauty. A beautiful cadaver is still a corpse. Catherine has no desire for material wealth, even with her talents in playing the games of the rich. All her money is a means to an end, facilitating her learning of death and the other side of the shroud.

Catherine possesses the fetter of Sophie, her ex-colleague who died in the poisoning incident that also claimed Catherine's life. Thanks to her violent death Sophie became a ghost. 2 pt. Merit

Catherine died in a poisoning incident at Consolidex Worldwide that claimed five people's lives. She only managed the transition to undeath because her regnant deemed her too valuable to let go. Even then, the unusual nature of her embrace left its mark on her undead condition, conferring boons and banes on equal measure.

Wounds on Catherine may decrease Appearance dots over time (even to 0), and the difficulties of all Necromancy rolls are reduced by two.

Flaws: Shadow WalkerLore of the Clans, pg. 107

6 pt. Flaw

Catherine's strange embrace changed her irrevocably. As a vampire, she exists on both sides of the shroud simultaneously. To her, objects in the Underworld are as solid as anything in the physical world.

This Flaw is similar to the Ash Path power Dead Hand (V20, p. 163), except Shadow Walker is always on. It gives nothing to the character possessing it to perceive beyond the shroud.

The Storyteller may determine that Shadowlands topography interferes with you. You're a blind man in the Shadowlands unless you possess the appropriate ability, so be careful in feeling your way about. At discretion, immaterial walls or environmental effects may restrict you.

You died. Perhaps you were murdered or simply had
a car accident. Whatever the cause, you were gone. But your sire found you too valuable, or couldn’t let you go. Youwere Embraced using the Ferryman’s Recall ritual (see p.109). The Embrace left you with the scars of your death, eternal tracework reminders of your trip to the other side. It also left you with the taut, pallid complexion of the dead.

In addition to the traditional weakness of your Clan, you also suffer disfigurement from your time as a true corpse. While you are able to heal yourself just like any other vampire, the wounds do not heal cleanly. You retain the scars of every experience. Depending on the nature of the damage, this can make social dealings exceedingly difficult and may decrease
your Appearance dots over time (even to 0). However, your time across the Shroud also gave you a natural feel for necromantic blood magic. The difficulties of all Necromancy rolls are reduced by two.

Flaws: Shadow WalkerLore of the Clans, pg. 107

6 pt. Flaw

The Giovanni Clan is by its nature inexorably tied to the realm beyond the sudario. Giovanni suffering from this Flaw is so tied to the Shadowlands that even in the lands of the living they must interact with the world of the dead on a nightly basis. To shadow walkers, objects in the Underworld are as real as anything found in the physical world. Such vampires find that the ghosts of walls may impede their flight, ghostly objects may strike them, and wraiths’ powers work as if the Kindred were on the far side of the Shroud. This Flaw is similar to the Ash Path power Dead Hand (V20, p. 163), except that Shadow Walker is always on and it in no way allows the character possessing it to perceive beyond the Shroud.

The Storyteller may determine that certain Shadowlands topography interferes with you. Unless you have some ability to do so, you can’t see into the Shadowlands, so you have to be careful in feeling your way about — essentially, a blind man subject to the Underworld landscape. At the Storyteller’s discretion, immaterial walls or environmental effects may restrict you.

Shadowlands Incorporated: We Take Care Of You Beyond The Shroud.spacer.png

Catherine Giovanni

Clan: Giovanni

Generation: 8th

Concept: Shadowlands Incorporated

Nature: Idealist

Demeanor: Director

Sire: Marietta Giovanni

Date of Birth: 27th of July 1976

Catherine Giovanni

Clan: Giovanni

Generation: 8th

Concept: Shadowlands Enthusiast

Nature: Idealist

Demeanor: Director

Sire: Marietta Giovanni

Date of Birth: 27th of July 1976

Date of Death: 12th of January 1998

Appearance

Frozen by the Proxy Kiss at the cusp of entering adulthood, Catherine is a relatively short young woman with a distinctly bookish appearance. She's rather plain-looking, and in nine out of ten chances, you won't be able to distinguish her in a crowd of other short, black-haired women. She's not unattractive but tends to look around distracted, potentially offending conversation partners.

Thanks to the strange manner of her embrace, she still has scars from the bullet wounds which claimed her life. These are scattered all over her body, though, thankfully, nothing that more conservative clothing can't conceal. Moreover, she's not the type to wear revealing clothes.

Her sire advised her that her undead body's rare condition might allow future wounds to leave similar scars. Thanks to this information, Catherine has a habit of shielding her face in response to potential harm, no matter the source.

Personality

Unbeknownst to no one else but her sire, Catherine perceives the world in the manner of someone so touched by death. Everything looks on the edge of Oblivion to her right before they take the plunge toward their ultimate end.

When Catherine told her sire, she laughed. Marietta said to treasure her gift but keep it a secret from other kindreds lest they misunderstand the blessing. She told her to refrain from discussing this with others from the family unless they match her outlook. Catherine is sure it was a pun.

When you perceive everything as rot and death, you tend not to be overly impressed with glamour and beauty. A beautiful cadaver is still a corpse. It's not like Catherine is particularly antisocial, but she has a reputation for bluntness and dull surprises. Years of staring at horrors have steeled her will, but on the flip side, she commits social faux pas here and there. It's hard to compliment Toreador Primogen's makeup when she's missing her lips.

Catherine tends to avoid social gatherings - family or otherwise - unless doing so would be a social suicide. She throws herself to her studies as if compensating for that. She's always been studious, but her death seemingly supercharged it to the point of the supernatural. Necromancy comes naturally to her, perhaps, ironically, thanks to her unnatural makeup. If the family finds her beneficial, they'll excuse her less-than-perfect attendance records.

Moreover, she has developed a bit of an obsession with Necromancy over the years. In the absence of what makes the Skinlands beautiful, Catherine has learned to appreciate the - hellish yet hauntingly beautiful - sceneries on the other side of the shroud. Her fascination for the other side is such that she sometimes beckons wraiths through Necromancy for a conversation partner, a behavior that would have the anziani raising their eyebrows.

2 pt. Flaw
