NPCs for Background Marietta Giovanni, Giovanni Elder: A Giovanni anziani from Venice, Marietta is one of those embraced before Augustus' plot in the 15th Century. Her sire was a Cappadocian, and she largely sat on the sidelines of the clan purge, preferring to broaden her knowledge of the occult instead. An avid collector of morbid trophies, Marietta often dispatches her agents - which include her progeny - to acquire new ones. Catherine's teacher in Necromancy, she'd worry less about the loss of face in Atlanta and how she allowed wraiths to wreak havoc like that. (Memento de Morte) Sophie Campbell, The Other Victim: Sophie was once a promising rising star in Consolidex Worldwide's Boston office, a go-getter willing to play ball - and the balls - with others to advance the corporate ladder. She and Catherine had a friendly rivalry, though they often worked together to create a client haul. Sophie perished in the poisoning incident at the Consolidex office, but the violent manner of her death means Sophie still exists as a ghost. She never pledged anything to Catherine even after she helped her get revenge, but she knows how to ignite Sophie's passions to rejuvenate her. A party girl in life, her Passion is to experience the same sensation again, especially in a crowd. (Spirit Slaves) Consolidex Worldwide, Savannah Branch: Unlike the high-rise building in Atlanta, Consolidex Worldwide's holding in Savannah only consists of a single office Downtown. However, it's still lavishly decorated as befitting of a fancy investment firm. Clients prefer meeting at their convenience, so most agents book meetings outside and only go to the office to prepare paperwork. Catherine isn't different, though she always does night shifts for her "conditions." Aside from turning enough profit for her clients, her concern is leveraging her tangible assets for occult purposes, usually Shadowlands knowledge. (Resources) Lorenzo Giovanni of the Atlanta Giovanni: Lorenzo is a Giovanni ghoul and Atlanta's most visible Clan Giovanni representative now that Catherine relocated. Despite his status as a servant, he has considerable personal power and influence in the family, thanks to his advanced age. Lorenzo claims to know Marietta since she was a neonate almost a millennia ago. An investment banker by day, he commands much of the Giovanni family's assets in Atlanta and would have frozen them for Catherine's use if she stayed. He's content to observe the neonate's next move in Savannah from the rumor grapevines. (Adversary) Eleanor Johnston Hodge, Ventrue Primogen of Atlanta: A former Camarilla Archon and progeny of a former Ventrue Justicar, Eleanor commands Camarilla's respect even if she's not her city's Prince. Outwardly friendly yet very much unflappable in private, Eleanor is the type to Dominate you to bark like a dog to humiliate you in front of Elysium. Inheriting clan Ventrue's distrust for the Giovanni family, she would have acted against their growing power base in Atlanta before the ghost mishap. She'd probably humiliate Catherine if she dared show her face in Atlanta Elysium again, her husband's edict be damned. (Adversary)   Advancement Night-to-night activities: Catherine's observation of the Shroud and Beyond will give her plenty of practice on the Occult and Necromancy, while her investment activities in Consolidex will keep her sharp on Finance.  Trained off-camera: The more she acquires Necromancy texts and artifacts and scours them for their knowledge, the more she'd hone her understanding of Necromantic Rituals and add to her collection of Memento de Morte. Methods other than regular activities or training: In her ongoing attempt to walk the Road of the Bones, she's trying to learn prized disciplines Auspex (for more clarity of her visions on the other side) and Fortitude (to learn more about the undead physiology and its limits). Correspondence with her sire has been slow thanks to the awkwardness of distant communication, so she's willing to seek secondary teacher(s) nearby.   

History Catherine spent her childhood in Boston among the extended Giovanni family in Massachusetts. She grew up mostly ignorant of the family business - both mundane and spiritual - other than the high expectations of being from a distinguished lineage like the Giovanni. She concentrated on her academic achievement and landed herself a scholarship and a fast track to a cushy corporate job.   She attracted the attention of Venice at that point. Marietta Giovanni, an anziani who wanted a pawn in the North American corporate structure, summoned Catherine to Venice and bestowed the Proxy Kiss on her. The corporate scene is a web of favor and conspiracy, but power players enjoy a massive web of influence worldwide.    This fact goes double for Catherine's corporate job. The company, Consolidex Worldwide, is an investment firm associated with the colossal Pentex Group. Competitions between individuals are fierce, and cutthroat murder of rivals - most often discreetly, of course - isn't rare.   Sure enough, in the third year of her job, Catherine fell victim to an advancement plot involving poisoning an entire team. There was never a police report filed, and Pentex PR Team worked hard to compensate the families of those affected generously.    Backdoor settlements made most parties happy, but Marietta was not pleased. A pawn conveniently placed in one of the largest companies in the world isn't easy to replace. She even traveled to Boston to rectify that setback.   Catherine didn't remember much of her time on the other side - only strangely vivid, nightmarish images - but she could recall her embrace very well. Her sire brought her up to speed, though being one of the kindreds presented awkward challenges in the corporate world. Thankfully, Consolidex Worldwide offers flexible hours if you bring the profit to match.   Having learned cutthroat business practices firsthand - and died for it - Catherine supplemented her business acumen with other edges to stay ahead of the pact. She never knew how Necromancy worked while she lived, but now that she died, a switch seemingly flipped on that front. Her sire was happy to accommodate her progeny's desire to learn.    Catherine utilized Necromancy ruthlessly, even avenging herself and her teammates on the perpetrator of the poisoning incident. Over time, she learned to embrace Necromancy not as a means to an end but as a passion. Around this time, her vision deteriorated into one of death, detaching herself from the mortal world even more.    Her rapid advancement in her business and mystical acumen earned her a promotion in her company. When Consolidex Worldwide expanded to Georgia, she achieved a position in Atlanta, the prime expansion location.    The situation wasn't all good, however. The Camarilla ruling body of Atlanta doesn't like the Giovanni clan and resisted their advance into the city in the 70s before relenting. Even then, the clan's presence is limited, and family members prefer to send proxies instead of dealing with the Atlanta Prince directly.    Despite that, it's common knowledge among the Giovanni family that Atlanta possesses an active ghostly presence, with a city full of them on the other side of the shroud. Catherine worked with the local Atlanta Giovanni - a ghoul named Lorenzo - to procure artifacts for Venice.    The arrangement worked fine for a time until a mishap happened. Catherine still wasn't sure what went wrong - and if it was even her fault - but now, ghosts infest a holding of Atlanta's Ventrue Primogen to the point of inoperability and high poltergeist activity. Catherine apologized and paid reparations, but thanks to the Ventrue clan's influence on politics in Atlanta, she became a pariah in a hurry. Worse still, she soured the Giovanni family's carefully cultivated image in the city.    Left with hindered advancement and the talk of the town - and not in a good way - circumstances forced Catherine to reconsider her position. That was when she overheard the rumor grapevine of the Prince of Savannah's open invitation to claim praxis in his city. Consolidex already has an office there, and while the Necropolis situation in Savannah is still a largely unknown quantity, it's still an option to start fresh.   It's not like Catherine has many options available to her.   Factions Wronged Atlanta Ventrue Perhaps the most politically influential clan in Atlanta, the Atlanta Ventrue clan is united under the leadership of their Primogen Eleanor Johnston Hodge, wife of Prince James Benison Hodge. Those who incurred her displeasure are disadvantageous in establishing themselves in the city. Catherine, unfortunately, found herself in that position. Atlanta Giovanni It takes many years to build a reputation and only a second to tear it down. The saying is at least true for the Giovanni family's reputation in Atlanta. While what happened with Primogen Eleanor's property wasn't her fault, Catherine oversaw the operation and should take responsibility for the mishap. Lorenzo - her partner-in-crime in that endeavor - hasn't taken action against her yet, but he already has spoken unflatteringly about her to his side of the family. It probably doesn't bode well for her standings in the family, especially the North American branch.  

Shadowlands Incorporated: We Take Care Of You Beyond The Shroud. Catherine Giovanni Clan: Giovanni Generation: 8th Concept: Shadowlands Incorporated Nature: Idealist Demeanor: Director Sire: Marietta Giovanni Date of Birth: 27th of July 1973 Date of Death: 12th of January 1998   Appearance Frozen by the Proxy Kiss in young adulthood, Catherine looks like a college student even if she dresses up in formal clothing. She has an olive complexion and raven-colored hair of her Mediterranean heritage, even if paler than most. She's attractive but doesn't try to accentuate her appearance beyond what she thinks is professional. The glasses are also for professional aesthetics instead of functionality. She was nearsighted, but it didn't survive the embrace.   Her body language is domineering but stoic instead of playful or boastful. She might seem unapproachable at first glance, but she tends to be friendly enough in conversation, if a bit distant. Interactions with her resemble a doctor trying to ease her patients while they lie on their deathbeds, which does hint at her condition.   Personality Catherine is analytical, always trying to look at problems or events from differing points of view. She prefers direct, to-the-point analysis, but she's always quick to dispense solutions - her opinions, more accurately - if asked but tends to keep to herself otherwise. She won't say it out loud, but she enjoys people asking her for non-violent exchanges of ideas.   She's a conversationalist but has a warped sense of tact and what's considered acceptable in polite conversation. Catherine will happily talk about morbid subjects like death, examination of corpses, or particularly gruesome ends in polite society or blindsiding someone in a casual setting.   In a way, death and rot are parts of her every night. Unbeknownst to no one else but her sire, Catherine perceives the world on the edge of Oblivion. Buildings appear dilapidated and collapsing, mortals are walking cadavers with rotting visages, and even the rare supernaturals she encountered look as if they're at the point of their deaths. Cainites, of course, appear as if they're corpses in the advanced stage of decomposition, nothing but bones and skins.   When you perceive everything as rot and death, you tend not to be overly impressed with glamour and beauty. A beautiful cadaver is still a corpse. Catherine has no desire for material wealth, even with her talents in playing the games of the rich. Flaw Catherine's strange embrace changed her irrevocably. As a vampire, she exists on both sides of the shroud simultaneously. To her, objects in the Underworld are as solid as anything in the physical world. This Flaw is similar to the Ash Path power Dead Hand (V20, p. 163), except Shadow Walker is always on. It gives nothing to the character possessing it to perceive beyond the shroud. The Storyteller may determine that Shadowlands topography interferes with you. You're a blind man in the Shadowlands unless you possess the appropriate ability, so be careful in feeling your way about.
