Estriel Ilyakrana

Race: River Elf
Class: Rogue
Gender: Male
Background: Charlatan
Alignment: Chaotic Good

Personality:

A friendly person, inquisitive and intelligent since his childhood. An unfortunate problem threw him in a life of quackery, where he learned to use his intelligence to deceit and trickery.

His preferred scam is to pose as a wandering priest of whatever deity is revered at a particular location and collect donations for the poor. The poor being himself.

He lived so long in this life of deception that he almost forgot who he really is. Lying now became second nature for him and it is very hard for him to tell the truth. Most of the time he pretends to be a human, instead of an elf, concealing or taping his ears.

Background:

Estriel Ilyakrana was a River Elf that lived as a farmer on the remote outskirts of Triolo. He came from a family of farmers and fishermen that lived simple lives. His parents worked hard and saved money during a long time to break that family tradition, started when his grandfathers arrived at the region exiled from his homeland. His parents decided that he would study to be someone important. They saved enough money for him to study at one of the best schools of Triolo, with ties to the local temple, and finally break the poverty cycle.

He spent some years at Triolo, learning and living the best he could manage with his meager recurses. He was inquisitive and a fast learner and that opened many doors. He quickly learned how to write and read, despite his advanced age. With time he learned the inner ropes of the temple, and many other useful skills, opening some paths of work for his future. He was undecided between following a career at the bank or joining the priesthood.

Estriel was favoring the priesthood and delayed his discharge from the school to learn enough to apply with confidence to his new vocation. But his inquisitiveness, that proved at first a true blessing, was eventually his downfall. He learned by investigating the temple that the second high-ordered priest at the church, named Brom Urduk, was scheming to assassinate the arch-priest Brior and occupy his post. He could not reach directly the arch-priest, and decided to tell what he knew to the town’s sheriff, Ingur Mann.

He did not know, but the sheriff was also involved in the assassination plot. The current arch-priest was creating difficulties to the smuggling operation and they decided to remove him. He was targeted for assassination by one of the sheriff's cousins, member of the town militia. In the commotion of the fight, he managed to steal his weapon and kill him. Estriel barely escaped alive from Triolo when the militia was put into motion after him. He had to hide away from his pursuers and his own family to avoid being captured, and sentenced to death.

Eventually he assumed other identity to survive, presenting himself as a wandering priest, and changing his character from time to time. Quackery became his way of life and flattery, his weapon of choice. He lived so long in this facade, impersonating different people, that he almost forgot his real persona.

Goals:

•  Become himself and stop pretending he is not what he is, and finally become what he should be.

•  Give a payback to Brom Urduk or Ingur Mann, possibly both, for destroying his previous life.

Secrets:

•  Estriel knows that other important people in Triolo are also inside the smuggling scheme, but he didn't have time to dig for their names. With time, he can discover who they are and they certainly don't want that to happen, so there is a reward for his capture.

•  His grandfather was exiled, because he failed his duty of guarding an important artifact. The artifact contained a demonic entity that extracted pleasure in terrorizing the elves of his homeland. This entity can be anywhere.

Memories, mannerisms, or quirks:

•  His best memories are from the time he spent with his parents in the field farming or fishing. He longs for a return to a simple life.

•  He lost his own personal mannerisms, but he is always attentive for new mannerisms to copy and incorporate into new characters he creates. The mannerisms he has now he copied from one of his teachers at his school.

•  He learned Draconic on his school, only because it required to know the language to read an specific book that contained an answer to a difficult puzzle one of his teachers proposed him.

His only feature that remained from his own personality is that he loves to solve puzzles, and cannot resist a good puzzle.

RACIAL FEATURES

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.

Trance. Elves do not sleep. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for 4 hours a day.

___________________________________________________
CLASS FEATURES

Sneak Attack (2D6). Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.

You don't need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.

The amount of the extra damage increases as you gain levels in this class, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.

Thieves' Cant. During your rogue training you learned thieves' cant, a secret mix of dialect, jargon, and code that allows you to hide messages in seemingly normal conversation. Only another creature that knows thieves' cant understands such messages. It takes four times longer to convey such a message than it does to speak the same idea plainly.

In addition, you understand a set of secret signs and symbols used to convey short, simple messages, such as whether an area is dangerous or the territory of a thieves' guild, whether loot is nearby, or whether the people in an area are easy marks or will provide a safe house for thieves on the run.

Heh! I was not saying to enter the hole. Specially me. Just take a peek at the border. Estriel said cringing of fear if it was required to take the path of the hole. But let's keep our options open. If the hole is the best option, the hole it will be. With a more appropriate person to take the first dip.

That said he approached the border of the hole at the center of the chamber to take a look down. After that he moved to the threshold of the corridor to use his mirror (thieves' tools) to look at the top of the stairs, without showing himself at the main corridor.
