Scarlet Citadel Level 0: Ruins Above

The next morning the group gathered bright and early, eager to get to the Citadel before dark. Their guide met them just outside the palisade ready to lead them as promised on a safe and uneventful trip. And for the next seven long hours he did just that, the path was overgrown, narrow, and non-existent at times but the travel through the rolling hills and tall grasses was uneventful as promised and as if like the precision of clockwork, about seven hours later the group had arrived at their destination.

The structure stands atop a low hill that slopes off gradually all around. The slope is gentle, but the ground is rugged, broken by ravines, boulders, tangled brush, and fallen trees. When the keep was in use, the ground around it must have been cleared for several hundred yards in every direction. Since the fort’s fall, trees and brush have regrown right up to the fortress and even inside the courtyard.

The fort was breached at the northwest and southeast corners, but the rest of the walls and the main keep still stand. The outer walls are 15 feet high. The main tower rises 40 feet, and the secondary keep is 30 feet tall but heavily damaged. Despite the damage and decay, it’s easy to see why it was named the Scarlet Citadel: the red stone blocks used in its construction stand out starkly against the greenery.

No one comes here anymore except hopeful adventurers like yourselves, so the old road from the town of Redtower is now no more than a weed-choked track.

The Scarlet Citadel may be in ruins, but it’s still an impressive place.

Due to the early start of the day (6am), it is now just after lunch (1pm) and the group needed to decide which way they would approach, they could enter through the main gateway or through the breached and collapsed walls on the northwest or southeast corners of the structure.

Ingyrd Moondancer - Bearfolk Druidspacer.png

The trip was as uneventful as promised, and Ingyrd realized she could have made this trip without a guide's help. But, uneventful was what they paid for, and she was not going to complain. Standing outside the Citadel, Ingyrd took a deep breath, knowing they were about to face real challenge and danger. She just hoped she was up for it.

"Well done, Swiftfoot," Ingyrd said to their hired help. She gave the limping man the rest of his coin. "We're going to explore the Citadel; might find some old treasure. Did you want to join us? You can have an equal share of the loot..." Ingyrd hoped the man would stick around, they could use the help.

RACIAL FEATURES

Bite: Your powerful jaws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If it hits, you deal 1d6 + your Strength modifier piercing damage.
Natural Armor: Your hide is thick and tough, granting you a natural AC of 13 + your Dexterity modifier.

Powerful Build: You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Nature's Gift: You know one cantrip of your choice from the druid spell list. Wisdom is your spellcasting ability score for it.
Stalwart Will: When you make an Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma saving throw, you can roll a d4 and add the result to your total. You can do this after the roll but before any effects occur. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a short or long rest.

___________________________________________________
CLASS FEATURES

Druidic: You know Druidic, the Secret language of druids. You can speak the language and use it to leave hidden messages. You and others who know this language automatically spot such a message. Others spot the message’s presence with a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check but can’t decipher it without magic.

Spellcasting:

Drawing on the divine essence of Nature itself, you can cast Spells to shape that essence to your will. See the general rules of Spellcasting and the druid spell list.

Cantrips:
At 1st Level, you know two Cantrips of your choice from the druid spell list. You learn additional druid Cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Druid table.

Preparing and Casting Spells
The Druid table shows how many Spell Slots you have to cast your druid Spells of 1st Level and higher. To cast one of these druid spells, you must expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher. You regain all expended Spell Slots when you finish a Long Rest.

You prepare the list of druid Spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the druid spell list. When you do so, choose a number of druid spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your druid level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have Spell Slots.

For example, if you are a 3rd-level druid, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level Spell Slots. With a Wisdom of 16, your list of prepared Spells can include six spells of 1st or 2nd Level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell Cure Wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn’t remove it from your list of prepared spells.

You can also change your list of prepared Spells when you finish a Long Rest. Preparing a new list of druid spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation: at least 1 minute per Spell Level for each spell on your list.

Spellcasting Ability:
Wisdom is your Spellcasting ability for your druid Spells, since your magic draws upon your devotion and Attunement to Nature. You use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a druid spell you cast and when making an Attack roll with one.

Spell save DC (13) = 8 + your proficiency bonus (2) + your Wisdom modifier (3)
Spell attack modifier (5) = your proficiency bonus (2) + your Wisdom modifier (3)

[Ritual Casting:
You can cast a druid spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell prepared.

Spellcasting Focus:
You can use a Druidic focus as a Spellcasting focus for your druid Spells.

Estriel Ilyakrana - Elven Roguespacer.png

The journey proved more difficult than Estriel initially thought it would be, he was expecting a well-trodden path. He had actually to work hard for the three gold coins and he was not planning for that. He was not planning to enter The Scarlet Citadel either. The place was dangerous and staying alive was higher on his list of priorities than accrue money. But as he was asked to join the party, he had to consider the offer.

This group, during the trip to the Citadel, proved two things to him. One, that they are well-intentioned fools. Estriel managed to play them like a fiddle. And two, they appear to be capable to face a dungeon and survive. These are both qualities that he could use for his own benefit.

Nah! I have to pass. I don't plan to enter in this forsaken place again. - he said pocketing the money and leaving the place with a fast limping stride.

As soon as he left their view, he make a quick change to his main character, Luke Hobbs, the wandering priest. It would be difficult to maintain the Swiftfoot's disguise for long, but Luke, he can play for years if necessary. And then before they could enter the place, he returned.

Hello, friends! I was nearby and planning to enter this place, to search for a missing companion. But I was afraid I could not do that alone, so I was waiting for someone to join. - said Estriel waving his hand as he approached the group like the never saw them before. He was now meticulously dressed with the garb of a priest. But what are my manners! - he said hitting his forehead lightly with the palm of his hand. Luke Hobbs, a humble servant of the merciful Lada. A wandering priest, at your service. - making a low bow, similar to the one Hawk Swiftfoot did the day before.

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.

Trance. Elves do not sleep. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for 4 hours a day.

CLASS FEATURES

Sneak Attack (2D6). Beginning at 1st level, you know how to strike subtly and exploit a foe's distraction. Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use a finesse or a ranged weapon.

You don't need advantage on the attack roll if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it, that enemy isn't incapacitated, and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.

The amount of the extra damage increases as you gain levels in this class, as shown in the Sneak Attack column of the Rogue table.

Thieves' Cant. During your rogue training you learned thieves' cant, a secret mix of dialect, jargon, and code that allows you to hide messages in seemingly normal conversation. Only another creature that knows thieves' cant understands such messages. It takes four times longer to convey such a message than it does to speak the same idea plainly.

In addition, you understand a set of secret signs and symbols used to convey short, simple messages, such as whether an area is dangerous or the territory of a thieves' guild, whether loot is nearby, or whether the people in an area are easy marks or will provide a safe house for thieves on the run.

Scarlet Citadel Level 0: Ruins Above

Deciding to head straight into the ruins through the main gateway, or at least what was left of it anyway. Arik began to work his way across the rubble.

During whatever assault the structure had suffered in the past, the heavy gates were completely smashed off their hinges and broken into bench-sized chunks that still lie on the ground.  The main gateway is lined with rubble, but it’s shallow and stable enough for the group to traverse. The archway was two stories tall originally, and downward‑facing arrow slits line the western wall (adjoining the keep) 8 to 10 feet above ground level. Only portions of the arched roof remain.

Arik was the first to make it over the rubble of the collapsed gateway and looked in through the opening of the collapsed building to the east.

Collapsed Buildings

The buildings directly to the east looked to originally be some sort of barracks. Now it was almost completely in ruins. The slate-shingled roof had fallen in, and only portions of the interior walls remained. There are no doors or windows still in their frames, and the original floor is buried under up to a foot of debris. Brush grows from every patch of dirt, and vines drape the ancient walls.

The rubble to the southeast of the barracks where the walls were breached was eight feet in height and looks like it might be mildly dangerous to cross with all the jagged and twisted pieces of the structure lying about, it was a good thing they had opted for the main gate.

Arik could see an intact set of steps to the west they led up to the main keep.

The courtyard was quiet. Almost too quiet.

Arik Lostcub - Bearfolk Barbarianspacer.png

Arik stepped in as quietly as he could, axe ready to swing at anything that jumped out. He doubted any vagabonds or innocent travelers would be camping inside, waiting to surprise any visitors with brunch, so he felt pretty comfortable starting out prepped to employ lethal force. He took a look around, noting the overgrowth on the ground and the stairs up. Nothing moved, but that only made the young bearfolk feel more ill at ease.

He turned to Robin (and anyone else standing close enough to hear his harsh, snarled whisper) "Stairs up about fifty-ish feet to the west. This place is way too quiet and way too still. Stay close." He barely kept a slight quaver out of his voice, not wanting to appear weak, although part of him feared he would get shot full of arrows and be left to die. He barely restrained the urge to snuffle and snort out some snot, but in the name of stealth he stayed relatively quiet. "Here I go." Arik nonetheless hesitated for a few seconds, looking to Moondancer for approval, although he didn't think she would have any other course of action. As quietly as he could, he began to move into the courtyard, keeping a healthy distance from the empty doorways to the north and east.

Sir Robin Hawkwood - Elfmarked Paladinspacer.png

The trip had been uneventful and Robin felt that the group had chosen its guide well. As Swiftfoot took his leave, the paladin gave him a nod of appreciation.

But a few moments later, yet another newcomer appeared out of nowhere, and again with a perfect timing. Something about him and his behavior seemed familiar, but Robin could not quite put his finger on it. Strangely enough, no one objected to that travelling priest joining the group, so the knight decided to keep quiet for now. Still, the stranger would have to prove his worth, be it through his healing powers or his prowess in fights.

The Citadel itself did not seem that impressive to Robin.

Somehow I imagined it bigger. But the underground network of tunnels and rooms must be quite impressive; of this I am certain.

When Arik bravely volunteered to take point, Robin decided to follow right behind him. After watching the bearfolk succeed at walking silently, the paladin decided to imitate him in spite of his clunky armor.

So Robin quickly followed Arik, attempting to do so as stealthily as possible.

CLASS FEATURES

Divine Sense (4/day)

The presence of strong evil registers on your senses like a noxious odor, and powerful good rings like heavenly music in your ears. As an action, you can open your awareness to detect such forces. Until the end of your next turn, you know the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of you that is not behind total cover. You know the type (celestial, fiend, or undead) of any being whose presence you sense, but not its identity (the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich, for instance). Within the same radius, you also detect the presence of any place or object that has been consecrated or desecrated, as with the hallow spell.

You can use this feature a number of times equal to 1 + your Charisma modifier. When you finish a long rest, you regain all expended uses.

Lay on Hands (5/5 per day)

Your blessed touch can heal wounds. You have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you take a long rest. With that pool, you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your paladin level × 5.

As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool.

Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from your pool of healing to cure the target of one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it. You can cure multiple diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single use of Lay on Hands, expending hit points separately for each one.

This feature has no effect on undead and constructs.

Elendris Vessicari - Shadow Elf WarlockElendris.png

As the party crept silently through the main doors, Elendris kept a cool exterior. They were just barging into a dangerous building without proper preparations! She'd have felt more comfortable after a week of gathering information and a day or two of studying the place, but the others of the party were adamant in exploring without delay. Elendris had dropped her suggestion without much fuss, sensing that pushing the issue would gain her no favors.

'It's still better than exploring alone', thought Elendris as she shifted her hold on her shield. She looked about the ruined stonework, relishing that she no longer had to squint under the blinding sun.

At Arik's whispered words, Elendris whispered back, "Yes, let's be wary. No matter how abandoned it appears, Konrad had said that this place has a master residing within. Watch for his guardians or traps."

She kept formation, following Arik's lead as the party stealthily crept forward.

Your accent, mannerisms, figures of speech, and perhaps even your appearance all mark you as foreign. Curious glances are directed your way wherever you go, which can be a nuisance, but you also gain the friendly interest of scholars and others intrigued by far-off lands, to say nothing of everyday folk who are eager to hear stories of your homeland.

You can parley this attention into access to people and places you might not otherwise have, for you and your traveling companions. Noble lords, scholars, and merchant princes, to name a few, might be interested in hearing about your distant homeland and people.

RACIAL FEATURES

Darkvision. Accustomed to twilit forests and the night sky, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Fey Ancestry. You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can't put you to sleep.

Trance. Elves do not sleep. Instead they meditate deeply, remaining semi-conscious, for 4 hours a day. The Common word for this meditation is "trance." While meditating, you dream after a fashion; such dreams are actually mental exercises that have become reflexive after years of practice. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit a human would from 8 hours of sleep.

Path of Shadows (3/day). When in darkness, dim light, or a shadow large enough to cover your body, you can cast the misty step spell. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum 1), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for this spell.

Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in bright sunlight.

Traveler in Darkness. You have advantage on any Intelligence (Arcana) check to learn about a particular fey road or shadow road and how it functions.

___________________________________________________
CLASS FEATURES

Hexblade's Curse (1/1 per rest)

Starting at 1st level, you gain the ability to place a baleful curse on someone. As a bonus action, choose one creature you can see within 30 feet of you. The target is cursed for 1 minute. The curse ends early if the target dies, you die, or you are incapacitated. Until the curse ends, you gain the following benefits:

You gain a bonus to damage rolls against the cursed target. The bonus equals your proficiency bonus.

Any attack roll you make against the cursed target is a critical hit on a roll of 19 or 20 on the d20.

If the cursed target dies, you regain hit points equal to your warlock level + your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1 hit point).

You can’t use this feature again until you finish a short or long rest.

Hex Warrior

At 1st level, you acquire the training necessary to effectively arm yourself for battle. You gain proficiency with medium armor, shields, and martial weapons.

The influence of your patron also allows you to mystically channel your will through a particular weapon. Whenever you finish a long rest, you can touch one weapon that you are proficient with and that lacks the two-handed property. When you attack with that weapon, you can use your Charisma modifier, instead of Strength or Dexterity, for the attack and damage rolls. This benefit lasts until you finish a long rest. If you later gain the Pact of the Blade feature, this benefit extends to every pact weapon you conjure with that feature, no matter the

Estriel Ilyakrana - Elven Roguespacer.png

This place looks haunted. And this courtyard looks like a deathtrap. Are these arrow slits? - said Estriel in a low voice, almost whispering, could not containing his nervousness and spilling words out of his mouth in sequence. He opened a secret pocket in his garb, revealing a collapsible short bow, which he promptly placed in his hands after unfolded. Another secret pocket revealed a hidden rapier.

One never knows when a wandering priest may need to protect himself from the unfaithful. - he said before any of his companions could think about asking for so many concealed weapons, recovering quickly from his earlier outburst.

He gently pushed his ursine companion from behind to give him enough space to squeeze through the opening at the east wall. Carefully hidden and crouched he took a peek at the room at the east section.

Arik began to quietly move west, along the northern wall of the keep until he reached the wall of the staircase that led up to it, his bear eyes peeled for any danger or movement. Light filtering into the other collapsed buildings off of the courtyard, what looked to be the remains of an old stable was due north of him now. Still, no other movement in the courtyard but their own.

Arik then heard it, loud as it was in the quiet of the courtyard, the unmistakable sound of heavy chain armor as Sir Robin came up behind him. If there were something watching them in the courtyard, well they knew that they were there now. Elendris and Ingyrd was soon with them along the keeps wall as well.

Estriel had not yet joined them, instead in crouched low and looked through the next open doorway of one of the outbuildings, definitely a workshop of some kind, at least at some point in its history. Scattered debris from the collapsed ceiling and rubble was strewn about. Estriel wondered what they may have crafted in this workshop many years ago.  Was it weapons? armor? or other goods and services the stronghold would have needed in its time. He saw no signs that the outbuildings had arrow slits, unlike the main structure who had them.

Ingyrd Moondancer - Bearfolk Druidspacer.png

Ingyrd was disappointed that Swiftfoot wasn’t interested in joining, but almost immediately after his departure, a priest presented himself. Ingyrd thought that very convenient, but didn’t belabor the point. After all, the priest was willing to join them, and the more bodies they had, the better their chances were. She merely grunted her welcome and name in return. She hoped this Hobbs was willing to help and not expecting them to do all the work.

When deciding how to enter, they had a bit of discussion on who should go first. Ingyrd was willing to, just to keep the group moving, but Hawkwood seems against it for some reason. In the end, she was able to bully Arik into going first (she thought she might be able to turn him to a leader yet) and they entered through the main gates.

Clutching her oak staff one hand, she hobbled after her younger companions, grateful for the morning walk to warm up her old joints. The soreness and pain from all the activity would come back in the evening, but for now, at least, she felt energized and ready. She knew she could never be as silent as Arik, but she tried anyways as they walked. She focused on searching the windows, cracks, and other openings in the interior walls to try to spot danger and be able to warn the group. She hurried to the tree in the middle of the courtyard, hoping for some cover while she searched.

Arik Lostcub - Bearfolk Barbarianspacer.png

Arik cringed inwardly as his companions made poor attempts at emulating his stealth. In truth he felt he was doing a better job than usual but they were very bad at it. "Can't be helped. Armor or age, we've just got to deal with it." The group wasn't ambushed upon entering the courtyard so Arik decided to move on before that changed. He drew up near Moondancer in the shadow of the tree and whispered in Northern "We're going in. If I die... don't leave my bones to rot here." He tried to force a smile like he was joking but his eyes betrayed the nervous fear that was gnawing at his mind. He grimaced and turned away, steeling himself for possible death as they entered the Scarlet Citadel proper. Motioning for everyone to follow, he made his way to the stairs and looked up to see what was there. He took the stairs slowly, with his axe ready to chop anyone who thought to ambush them. He wasn't exactly an expert in traps, but he kept his eyes peeled for anything amiss.

Once you have raged the number of times shown for your barbarian level in the Rages column of the Barbarian table, you must finish a long rest before you can rage again.

Unarmored Defense
While you are not wearing any armor, your armor class equals 10 + your Dexterity modifier + your Constitution modifier. You can use a shield and still gain this benefit.

Ingyrd Moondancer - Bearfolk Druidspacer.png

“Same goes for me, GhorrakOld Northern word for “Cub-With-Much-Potential,” usually a term of endearment used by older Bearfolk.,” she replied in Northern with a smile. “I want a forest glade for my burial mound.” She turned to the others, and switched to common. “Let’s follow Arik up, it’ll only get more perilous from here.” Ingyrd took her place in the marching order and gripped her staff tightly, expecting trouble.

Estriel got distracted investigating the rooms and forgot his place in the line. Nothing of value should be here at ground level. A horde of thieves and adventurers must have ransacked everything long ago. Even before the Citadel got fame.

When he looked again for his companions, they were already climbing the stairs. Valiantly, but carelessly. He hurried to follow them, using the cover of the trees, to assume the last place on the line. There was nothing he could say now. And it was probably better to remain silent.

Elendris Vessicari - Shadow Elf WarlockElendris.png

Elendris was a few paces behind Arik as the bearfolk started to scale the stairs up. Elendris cast a doubtful look at the steps of the stairs, wondering at their construction and their ability to hold the weight of the heavily built Arik. "Take care on each of those steps Arik. They might well creak or fall apart, if they are as in disrepair as the rest of this building."

'Especially since the place was burned out once.' she thought, but thought it best not to add to others' worries.

While waiting for her turn at the stairs, Elendris looked about for tracks or signs of other creatures that may have passed through the area.

Scarlet Citadel Level 0: Ruins Above

Arik climbed to steps slowly and methodically peering into the gloom that quickly turned to darkness of the first opening in the wall where a door once stood but now was long gone.

Inside the structure, a stone staircase leads up to what would have been the top floor, but only a few sagging beams remain. The wooden flooring and the roof are long gone.

Gnawed bones are strewn around the floor, along with a scattering of large feathers. The bones are from a mix of creatures: deer, dogs, badgers, and sheep look to make up the majority, but a few obviously humanoid skulls are propped prominently on rusting wall sconces.

Arik would need to move into the chamber to get a better look at the feathers to try and identify those. As Sir Robin came up behind him Arik moved forward to the next opening.

This section of the rectangular keep had four floors when it was intact. Like the other part of the keep, the upper floors and roof are gone except for a few sagging beams. The stairs to those upper floors were wooden and they, too, are burned or rotted away.

Gnawed bones and feathers similar to those in the other part of the keep are also strewn around this chamber. The floor surrounding a trapdoor opening next to the east wall has partially collapsed so the opening is now irregular, and no trapdoor remains.

As Elendris and Ingyrd reached the top level, the warlock looked around for any tracks, but the stone of the walkway provided no discernable ones.

A character who examines the feathers and makes a successful DC 15 Intelligence (Nature) check can say definitively they’re not from any species of bird the character is familiar with. Whatever it was, it’s bigger than an eagle—possibly twice as large, or more.
