FearlessYou are immune to fear effects of all sorts, essentially the
same as an Immunity to Fear effect (see Immunity in the
Powers chapter).
, Improved Critical (Bound in Silk) 4Increase your critical threat range with a particular attack (chosen when you acquire this advantage) by 1, allowing you to score a critical hit on a natural 19 or 20. Only a natural 20 is an automatic hit, however, and an attack that misses is not a critical. Each additional rank applies to a different attack or increases your threat range with an existing attack by one more, to a maximum threat range of 16-20 with 4 ranks., Improved DisarmYou have no penalty to your attack check when attempt-
ing to disarm an opponent and they do not get the op-
portunity to disarm you (see Disarm in the Action & Ad-
venture chapter).
, Improved HoldYour grab attacks are particularly difficult to escape. Op-
ponents you grab suffer a –5 circumstance penalty on
checks to escape.
, Move-By ActionWhen taking a standard action and a move action you can move both before and after your standard action, provided the total distance moved isn’t greater than your normal movement speed., Precise Attack 2When making ranged attacks you ignore attack check penalties for cover or concealment, although total cover still prevents you from making attacks., Prone FightingYou suffer no circumstance penalty to attack checks for being prone and adjacent opponents do not gain the usual circumstance bonus for close attacks against you.

• Spider Friend [Feature + Comprehend] details (1pp)Comprehend: Animals: Arachnids Only 1pp/2ranks
Feature: Spiders don't attack her or those near her and they are docile and friendly. 1pp
Quirk: Summon Spiders -1pp/flat
------------------------------------------------
Final Cost: 1pp

She is always surrounded by spiders and many of them are small, silky, delicate looking white spiders. Not in a foot deep swarm or anything but they're clearly visible and at least a few of them can be seen on her person at all times. They don't try to harm others or her but can freak people out.

The fact that she can speak with them tends to garner her odd looks sometimes as well.

Modi can comprehend and "communicate" with arachnids. Spiders are found virtually everywhere but for Modi that is even more true, there are literally a dozen or more spiders around her at virtually all times, they don't flee from her touch and don't bite her, ever. She was never squeamish about spiders or other insects but now she has a sort of empathy for them that she didn't have before, and they towards her. Sitting in her room she'll often play with them, and they'll literally "perform" for her as if they were a dog doing tricks. This has no real mechanical game effect unless the GM wants to use it as such. It might freak out people that have arachnophobia or are simply a bit squeamish about spiders and it could reveal her presence if she's trying to hide if the bad guys know that the prevalence of spiders is her "calling card" so to speak.

Final Cost: 10pp

Modi is immune to disease, poison, all environmental conditions (i.e. cold, heat, high pressure, radiation, and vacuum), sleep, suffocation, and starvation and thirst. Quite by accident Modi discovered just over a month ago, that she might actually be a true immortal deity, when she was crushed by falling concrete in an abandoned building she'd been trying out her powers in. Her body actually discorporated into a swarm of pale ghostly silk spiders that scattered and vanished. She awoke nearly a month later in a silk cocoon hidden behind a billboard on top of a roof. Her reawakening was just a few days ago and she hasn't told anyone; she's still freaked out about it, finds the whole idea absolutely terrifying, and hasn't even begun to process it.

She has a new sense, a psychic field of awareness that extends all around her. Initially this sense overwhelmed her, replacing her normal vision. She would see bits and pieces of the surrounding areas or merged views of everything as simply a mass of disorganized shapes and colors all matted over one another. It caused her severe confusion, mental distress, and psychological issues while she dealt with the apparent lack of control she had over what she would "see" for the rest of her life. Over time she began to regain her "normal" sense of vision but more importantly gain the ability to actually use this new sense, "seeing" with it normally and continuously.

Modi can extend silk strands, ribbons, ropes, etc. as "legs" and "arms" carrying her along at an incredibly rapid pace, grabbing on to and stabilizing her on multiple surfaces, projections, railings, posts, etc. The relative height she can reach is quite limited however and she must remain within 100' (10' per flight rank) of the surface of any ground based object to "grab" onto with her silk limbs. Unlike with normal "flight" you can follow her limbs of silk from the ground or other surface to where she is located up above, finding her even more easily than simply looking for her somewhere in the sky above. If her flight rank is weakened the distance she can be from any given surface decreases accordingly along with the reduction in speed.

(Alternate Effect)

You can restrain a target with bonds of ice, glue, webbing, energy or whatever suits your descriptors. The target makes an Athletics check against your effect DC (Snare Rank + 10).

The target can break out of the snare using Strength or any damage effect that doesn't require freedom of movement. The snare has a toughness equal to power rank, +1 per degree of failure above the maximum, to a maximum of your power level. Damage of Toughness + 10 or greater can break out automatically as a Move action; damage of Toughness + 15 or greater can break out as a Free Action. Alternately, the target can try to escape using Escape Artist vs. DC 20 + Snare rank.

SNARE SAVE RESULTS
Success: Target is not snared.
Failure (one degree) – Entangled: Target is impaired, vulnerable, and has partial cover. If the target needs body parts free to move (legs, wings, jets, etc.), he is also hindered.
Failure (two degrees) – Trapped: Target is disabled, defenseless, and has total cover. If he needs body parts free to move, he is immobile.

Modi can interact with the world around her via silk in the form of fine, barely visible, threads of the stuff, ribbons of it, or even massive ropes of the material. She can wrap opponents up in silk ribbons, try to pull them closer or lift them into the air, constrict the bonds that wrap them, or strike at them with a stream of silk like a flying serpent might. Effectively these psychic strands of "silk" stream from her and allow her to manipulate the world around her. She can send a massive wave of silk strands that fills the air in a sphere around her and the strands will attempt to wrap around any target within the area. She can create objects of "silk" that are permanent until destroyed or she dismisses them as well.

CHARACTER DETAILS???

Legal Name: Modi Tanaka
Goes By: Modi
Birth Name: Modi Tanaka
Nationality: American (3rd gen Japanese American)
Info: Asian, Female, 17, 5' 1", 117 lbs.
Eyes: Gray; Hair: Black
Origin: Mystic Demi-God Endowment

Notes of Interest:
  • Her HESA field is a very powerful broad area remote psychic sensing field that ignores obstacles, concealment of all kinds and illusions. It quite literally is a continual real time image of her surroundings mapped to her consciousness. She describes it as a amalgamated viewpoint in every direction that shows solid objects as wireframed semi-transparent objects she can see past.
  • Her magical abilities appear as silk due to her own imaging in her head. They could literally be anything but she perceives the powers as those of a "spider" deific source.

BACKGROUND

Modi had an unusual upbringing that took her to one country after another. Her father was a famous archeologist and her mother a well known and established photographer. As a family they travelled the world from one archaeology discovery to another. Thus Modi was exposed to numerous cultures as she grew up, usually no more than a couple years in any one of them. She was "home schooled" and her mother was her teacher for the most part. Her father would cover some subjects as well and the rest of it was filled in by local teachers near the sites when available.

In a South America dig along the southern edge of Salar de Uyuni, the salt flats, overlooking a jungle panorama further south disaster struck. The dig itself was unusual, virtually unique in fact. It was dedicated to a spider "god", demon or deity. It had just been discovered less than a week prior and her father was called in for some of the preliminary work as he was known for his delicacy with fragile ruins, something he had a distinctive positive track record with. None of the local population would work the dig as the myths of the area with regards to the white death, a large, pure white, jungle hunting spider related to the acecho spider. The variant known for its incredibly tough webbing, in addition to its speed, size, and venom. These spiders often reached the size of a small dog, possessed fangs strong enough to pierce body armor, and were capable of reaching speeds of almost 50 kilometers an hour (30mph). This variant possessed weaker venom but made up for that with webs strong enough to bind a full grown adult human. Thus it was that the dig site was set up without the assistance of any locals at all.

The temple, for that is what her father determined the structure to be within the first couple days, was exceedingly well preserved. Virtually every surface of the structure, inside and out, was coated with the webbing of the white accecho. Smoking out the spiders they took extreme precautions to prevent danger from the arachnids as they slowly worked their way through the temple. After it had been cleared they discovered that the entire structure was of a white marble like stone, not a single piece of wood or other material was used for its construction, a true marvel indeed. They had done a controlled burn around the site in the beginning, to keep the spider population from getting back into the temple but there were still a number of the arachnids in the site. Despite the possible danger to the site it was decided that controlled burns within the ruins themselves was worth the risk as the structure should be immune to the fire.

Carefully planned the controlled burn was started and the site members watched from a safe distance while the burn team did their jobs. The entrance was cleared without mishap but the jungle past the burn had grown strangely quiet. All of the party moved towards the ruins and the burn was stopped temporarily as the silence became absolute. The jungle was never silent like this, ever. Silence would have been preferable to what happened an instant later however as the site was swarmed, from all sides, by a horde of the white acecho's. Screams of pain and panic filled the air instantly and everyone ran to the center of the clearing, the temple itself, looking for safety and a place to defend themselves from the truly aggressive and deadly arachnids. Modi's parents pushed her ahead of them desperately as they ran deeper into the temple. The muted quiet as they ran through the temple was frightening for the girl with the only sound filling the air that of the oversized spiders scuttling across every surface, echoing behind them.

Modi was small and slender and just 12 at the time, quite a bit smaller than most girls her age in fact. This not only saved her own life but that of her mother's as well. The deepest chamber had a small triangular shaped opening that they hadn't been able to explore yet but Modi could barely wriggle through. Unlike the rest of the temple it was clear of any debris and there had been no trace of webbing in it either. It curved down and after the first eight feet or so it was impossible to see what lay beyond. They had a small robot that was going to be there at the end of the week but it hadn't arrived yet. Her father stacked all of the empty equipment crates in the entryway as he could, trying to close it off enough that there were no openings large enough for the spiders to get through. Meanwhile her mother helped Modi climb into the small opening and urged her on as she helper push her as far as she could. Modi had her small led headband and wrist bands on so there was no darkness to be fearful of but the young girl was terrified from the current situation.

She slipped out of her mothers sight as she made her way down the triangular "passage" but she could hear her mother's encouraging voice echoing behind her. Gritting her teeth and with a resolve amazing in one so young she continued on. A few moment's later she wriggled out into a small open chamber, pure white, that seemed to reflect every bit of light back at her a hundredfold. She squinted and dimmed her LED's as she moved forwards in fascination. What appeared to be a crystal statue of a stylized human female hybridized with one of those enormous spiders stood on a daias in the center of the chamber, which was amazingly, perfectly spherical. Modi moved forwards, unaware of each step but fascinated with the statue, until she stood beneath it. It was approximately eight feet tall and the spider "arms" that jutted from its back reached almost as wide as well.

She heard her father yell and her mother scream at that point and it broke her out of the spell that she seemed to have been under momentarily. Then the crystal statue looked at her and her own scream was added to the echoing sounds of the chamber as she collapsed unconscious to the floor.

Her father gave his life defending them both. Her mother didn't know what happened after that as she fell unconscious as well. All she knows is that not only were the spiders gone but the temple was as well. Modi and her mother were found shortly after the incident by a group of native Quechuan people. They transported the two to their small village less than a days walk away, carrying them the entire way. They cared for the two of them, Modi's mother being delirious, until they roused. Modi's mother was unconscious for only a few days while Modi was perfectly still, and coma-like, for almost a month. Modi they treated with incredible care and respect. On each of her shoulders, just behind her clavicle, two perfectly spaced pure white circular "birth marks" that she had not had before were clearly visible. There were similar, yet smaller markings on each side of her temple, three on each side.

Towards the end of the month in the last week that she was unconscious silk would gather, as if from the very air, around the young girl that the villagers would gather and in exchange leave her mother and Modi fresh fruits and tokens of their appreciation beyond what they had already been providing. When Modi woke her eyes had changed as well, they were now a solid pale gray, no iris, or pupil, just solid gray. Her mother was extremely concerned but the Quechuan people had spent the month teaching her of a prophecy and myth handed down through the generations of a hero of the weave of life, a "spider" warrior that would be born of a child. Her mother thought it incredulous and merely superstitious myth until the silk had begun to form about Modi and until she awoke, with strange and incredible powers.

Motivations / Complications / Relationships / Etc.

Motivation: Doing Good + Responsibility : Modi believes that helping others is the right thing to do and she's going to help out however she can and whenever she can. The fact that she's been granted such wonderful powers raises the need for doing so even more than her own upbringing and self drive. It is not only an assumed need but a responsibility to do her best with what she's got to create good in the world.

Responsibility: Her mother and only remaining family member Susan doesn't consider it "a chore" or anything but she feels that as a good daughter she should be there for her mother when she needs her and even simply to visit on a regular basis. She's also quite protective of her. Her mother, Judy, was a captive during a store "burglary" recently and Modi put the fellow in the hospital for the better part of a month. She paid the bill anonymously as she felt guilty about harming a normal person as she did.

Quirk / Obsession / Hangout: Olaf's American Pawn
Modi loves to visit a small pawn shop located down town. The place always seems larger than it should from the front but that can't be. All she knows is that Olaf is a nice old man and that she can get sidetracked by things in there for days at a time if she let herself. She makes it a point of checking on the shop at least once a week if possible and usually more frequently than that.

"Normal" Enemy: Jak Banyan and the Yakuza
Jak Banyan, the gang member that she put in the hospital, is part of the yakuza. He's holding a grudge and they're on the lookout for her now.

Guilt Complex: Modi feels guilty for the death of her own father. She feels that if only she had made it through the tunnel faster that he would still be alive today. She's not wrong, factually speaking, in that he likely would be, but she was a child at the time and struggling to deal with the situation. Putting that kind of responsibility on her simply isn't a reasonable expectation. Still, it doesn't stop her from getting a bit morose now and then and considering herself responsible for his death. It helps drive her to go on, and make something of what she considers a curse, a burden, that she's been given to carry, like a punishment for her failure.

Converting one of my other sheets, a gravity controller, over to a spider-girl character that has more of a spin on her with the ability to communicate with and control spiders, a create power, and 360 degree network of psychic "spiders" that she creates and propagates around her granting her a pervasive super sense of her surroundings.

Silk, a.k.a. Modi Tanaka is the actual character. 😉

@Khakhan

Mechanically tweaked a bit from my original raw execution but I like how she turned out.

I know I'll end up messing with the fluff a bit, rolling it into the current location / setting more seamlessly. I did use actual South American locations and culture in her current background fluff.

@Khakhan

Cleaned up the sheet, switched the equipment over to devices as they should have been all along, my bad there. Redid the snare powers using the house ruled snare power as needed and made a few tweaks with a handful of extras on different powers to give them more flavor. Envisioning her mystic array of silks almost like a Bride With White Hair meets Doc Ock concept with threads, cords, ribbons of silk streaming out from her to snare, manipulate (move object / tk), and create as an effective magical true creation of "things" if you will. Threw split 3 on the move object so she can manage up to 4 targets at once with it Doc Ock style for fun. Made both her single target snare and her burst snare paralyzing and incapacitating. The single target one is homing and tethered so the silk strands literally weave around the target trying to hit them again. The area one I did add the variable shape to so she can vary the type of area which seems like it would be a blast, yes, pun intended.

@Khakhan

Took care of the last bit of points, improved crit on the snare and a few other advantages bumped agility up 2 and threw immunity to sleep and immortality 1 back onto Deific Form. When she "dies" she discorporates into a swarm of ghostly white silk spiders that scatter and wakes in a large silk cocoon in a hidden out of the way alcove just shy of a month later, re-incorporated. 😉 She is VERY freaked out about it!
