Appearance & Personality

Edwin stands six feet tall with a broad, sturdy build. His skin is flawless, and his hands soft and supple, having never seen a hard day's work. His long brown hair grows past his shoulders, although it is always meticulously styled and clean. It is not uncommon for him to have a neatly trimmed beard that he grows to cover the slightest nick on his chin from a training accident when he first took up his sword in the service of Torm. Usually, he dresses in fine clothes befitting his station, although he is not overly obsessed with fashion. When ready for a fight, Edwin dons his chainmail armor (he would wear his brother's plate mail if it fit right), a sturdy kite shield, and a well-made longsword sheathed in a carefully maintained scabbard at his waist. He frequently wears a blue cloak around his neck when the weather turns cold.

With a naturally outgoing personality, Edwin has no problem speaking to complete strangers and is comfortable speaking in front of large crowds. He has an air of arrogance about him from his noble upbringing carrying himself in an upright, regal manner. Although he is a follower of Torm, it was mostly so he didn't have to go into his family business of raising champion stallions. He believes in the faith, but is far from fervent and more concerned with appearances. He is brave and will selflessly seek to help those in need, especially if it helps him look better to his family or peers. He fancies himself a ladies' man, although he will not go out of his way to pursue a love interest.

Plothook

After a night of good-natured carousing, he escorted a young noble woman home from a local drinking establishment into an unfamiliar, older part of town. They chatted casually, flirting with either other as they walked. She took his arm and led him to a shortcut through an old cemetery from when the town was founded. It was a particularly dark night, and a thick fog enveloped him as they walked. Soon, he could barely see his lovely companion and her voice became more and more distant.

When Edwin finally emerged from the strange mists, he found his escort gone and he was alone in an unfamiliar setting looking nothing like Elturel. Confused and more than a little concerned, he could see a few building of a small village in the distance; it was as good a direction to travel as any. That was two months ago....

Backstory

Edwin was born the fifth son to the noble house of CarverIt's annoyingly pronounced CAH-vah. Almost like a Philly accent. If you pronounce it like it's spelled, he will be grumpy! in the Faerun city of Elturel. He has four older brothers and one younger sister in his immediate family, most of whom live in the family estate. House Carver makes its fortune by breeding exceptional stallions sought after by calvary units and noble houses across the land. They are also known for training more exotic mounts, including hippogriffs, lions, and pegusi. As a land-owning noble, Edwin was expected to help and support the peasants who lived off his family lands. As an outgoing youth, he was pegged early on to join the family business in his father's footsteps. He found it horribly dull and suddenly found himself "called" to service with Torm and soon was apprenticed as an aspiring paladin.

Being naturally athletic, he good to the rigors of training easily learning to move with heavy armor and to wield a variety of weapons. Despite his physical prowess, he never took to learning the depths of his religion. Studying scriptures and centuries old writings never could hold his interest. But learning how to channel the power of Torm to smite down an "evildoer?" He was more than willing to spend extra time to try to further his mastery.

Coming from a noble family, backstabbing between family (and even within them) was the norm. Fortunately, his brothers were kind to him, partly because he was so outgoing and easy to befriend. His sister was a different story. She sought to undermine him repeatedly over the years showing little love for her family as the outcast sole woman sibling. Although it began as a mere sibling rivalry, it blossomed into much more over the years. Unfortunately, one night after carousing far past midnight, Edwin escorted a lonely stranger home...

Fears and Failures

Fears:

  • Disfigurement - Edwin is vain. He knows he has a handsome face and fears losing his good looks. He is even self-conscious about the minor scar he has on his chin.
  • Disowned - Having his family not want him or cause them such embarrassment that they do not acknowledge him. He lives for that affirmation from his family. He does not want to be forgotten or left alone.

Failures:

  • Edwin has a reputation that he "loves them and leaves them." He falls in love with a woman for a short time and then moves on to the next one.
  • He once let a man die that he could have saved, if he were only had a little more courage.
  • Using honeyed words, he fleeced a noblewoman into spending her last bit of gold on a horse she didn't need to bankrupt her.

Details
  • Is Might Right? - Might comes in so many forms. Physical might is one very, narrowly focused form. While Edwin recognize it as important, he is far more concerned with the power granted to him by his noble birthright. House Carver, while important, is hardly the top of the "food chain" when it comes to political influence. And whether or not you feel the influence directly or feel it's invisible pull on everyone's daily life, it is an unavoidable certainty of life. It does not necessary mean that those wielding such power use it for righteous pursuits.
  • Deity - Edwin is a follower of Torm, but is far from devout. Despite his lawful tendencies, he is not a zealot of his faith. He's met too many people who find Tormites stubborn and inflexible in their pursuit of righteousness. He does believe in loyalty to both Torm and his family and he does actively look to be a force of good in the world. His fervor is often tempered with his own selfish ideals.
  • Character Impressions - Private
Under the Hood

Edwin is meant to be a foil to the Domain of Dread. His family, which he covets, holds little value in this world. He is used to comfort and will find little in Falkovnia. His personality is a little over-the-top, and he will be a fish out of water. Edwin is willing to be brave, but it's really so others offer him appreciation. His faith is not very strong, but nothing like a bit of fear of death to grow one's beliefs! Although he is imperfect, it's meant to be an opportunity for character growth.
