Humans

Humanity has marched through time as rapidly as they can. A constant series of wars between the nation-states have driven on technological developments so as to better kill their fellow man. Advances include explosives in the form of black powder, muzzle loaded muskets and rifles, cast cannon, and sailing ships that can either deliver soldiers rapidly, or serve as floating batteries.

There are also those who study magic in the human world. It is an exhaustive, lengthy study to do even the simplest of tricks, and there must be an innate "spark" in the individual trying to conjure up spells. With the rapid advances in technology, few feel that it is worth while to study magic, and with the rarity of schools that teach it, it tends to be the refuge of the wealthy. Why cast a magic missile when one can simply fire a gun?

That is not to say that all are devoted to the advance of technology and the dominance of humanity as a whole. There are those who tend to the souls as well as the corporeal. Religion in humanity is limited to one God, simply called "The Father". He is seen as a benevolent God, but His word is often twisted by those who would use it to further their own ends. There are many orders of priests with different views, but all derive their clerical abilities from The Father. The art of healing is one that is taught in a formalized school for the priests, and these are held to a strict hierarchy. There are priests that are outside of the hierarchy, however, without formal training, they are unable to heal the bodies of their flock, only their spirits. These tend to be the "country pastors" and the "naturally devout". Yet there are those splinter groups who have both the belief and the training, and they raise theological questions all their own.

Humans tend to go unarmored at this point. They have found it to merely add weight, and no true defense against the bullets and cannonballs that they typically encounter on the field of battle.

In the beginning, there was the Voice of Diom. It spoke forms into existence, to both understand their world, and seek dominion over it. Each day a new emotion was instilled. Happiness. Anger. Sadness. Love. Curiosity. Wanderlust. Their lives were kept short by the fierce flame burning within, because with the need for dominion, they were inadvertently given ambition. The original sin, a mere accident. An afterthought.

Thus, Humans were born.

Women and men the world over have different roles and responsibilities, however, this is a time when education is becoming more available, and interdependence more common. The less urban an area, the more "frontier" it is, the more independence women will have. As these women have become important managing day to day life, their own expected rights have grown.

This is not to say that urban women are all trophy wives and mistresses. Certainly, these do exist. And certainly, the women of nobility are decorative until needed for political marriages, however, there are a few mavericks around who have demanded and received an education for themselves, and make attempts to do things such garnish more rights for women as a whole, further the efforts of science, run their own businesses, and more. However, these women are rarely taken seriously, and are often frustrated by the patronizing "pat on the head".

Women are not allowed to be clergy in the true Church, however there have been examples of women clergy in the offshoot religions, or, as they are described by the Church, cults. These women have been able to wield divine powers if trained by someone who was trained by the Church.

Some women do have the "spark" necessary to magic. It is rare that they are encouraged to pursue it, as those with money enough to send such women to school rarely think it wise to allow a woman and her unstable emotions access to such powers. If they do somehow manage to secure an education, they are generally not put in a position in the government of Drovkia, as they are only rarely ever taken seriously.

The religions of the elves and dwarves are detailed in their own sections, however, as true priests only originate from Diom, it is important to note how the clergy work and spread throughout the realms. The clergy living abroad from Diom are ministers to their own regions. Following a fairly standard Catholic practice, there are priests and bishops and arch bishops, though they are subject to the laws of Diom, rather than the laws of the nation they are staying in. They are almost never the target of attack, as bringing the wrath of the Church is not only a career ender, but a life ender as well. In matters spiritual, the clergy abroad are the final authority. Even Kings will balk at crossing God.

This offers up a new problem. Because of their seeming infallibility, many priests are corrupt. They will use their office to take bribes, they will skim the donation plates, and it is not at all uncommon to see priests as some of the finest clothed in town. There are honest priests as well, but the higher up one goes in the Church hierarchy, and the further away from Diom they are, the less prevalent they become.

Offshoots of the Church exist, though few are recognized. The offshoots do manage to wield priestly abilities, though what God they come from is often debated. As long as there is someone that is trained in the ways of the Church to instruct new clergy, these offshoots will be able to have divine magic at their disposal. How they use it, though, is a common question. These offshoots are often declared heretical, and rooted out with sword and fire.
