What is City of Mist?

City of Mist is a role-playing game of film noir investigation and super powered action. It is set in a modern world rife with crime, conspiracies, and mysteries. The protagonists are Gateways, ordinary people who became the living embodiment of a legend, their Mythos. While your Gateways may seek to strike a balance between the mysterious nature of their Mythos and their mortal aspirations, the powers within them always threaten to tear their lives apart. They have unwittingly become a part of a secret world of clashing stories, and soon other legends will come looking for them with demands.

Who are you?

In the shadows of shiny skyscrapers and derelict residential blocks, ancient stories and urban legends assume physical form, choosing mortal beings as their Gateways to this world. But the Mist, a mystical veil known only to a select few, prevents the unwitting denizens of the City from ever acknowledging the miracles they witness daily, hiding their true nature from one another. Distracted by their everyday hopes and fears, the people on the streets remain oblivious to the clash of mythical forces that drive and control the very life of the City.

You were an ordinary person—until the seed of the legendary awoke within you. Now you seek answers to questions about your powers, but the truth always seems to elude you. Yet at the same time, you still want what every human being wants: love, money, power, peace of mind. Together with your ragtag crew of gifted individuals, you work to reveal the powers operating in the dark smoky alleys of the City, just as those very powers seek you out for what you are. You will hit the streets in search of the strange cases, loose ends, and unsolved mysteries that will lead you to the truth, inevitably clashing with other legends in mortal form, agents of the powers beyond the Mist.

Be warned—the truth is as dangerous as the forces that hide it. Only when you find yourself sacrificing that which is dearest to you will you truly learn the answer to the ultimate question: "Who am I?" . But will it be worth it?

What this game is about?

Once, in the very beginning, there was only the City of Mist. The Mist started there, but its power and its oniric qualities could not be contained. Soon it spread with utmost speed, consuming all, like a malignant tumor. And now you live in a World of Mist. But the world did not change, everything looks exactly the same. Everyone lives their lives as before, don't recognizing the undeniable truth, that the world changed. Strange things started to happen and everybody just pretends to don't see them.

Most of them were harmless, but some dangerous, and some even lethal. Crimes and deaths of supernatural origin happen, but when the Mist intervenes, the authorities disappear, the police ignores and nobody really cares. Only you, and maybe others that have awakened like you, care. Those people that care about the state of the world founded a secret organization, the Light Beacon, the only option for those that want to know the truth. They are deeply unsatisfied with the current situation, and willing to take justice in their own hands.

You are about to embark in a journey of discovery that offers no way back.

  1. What's new in this game
  2. Hey there! Is this game still recruiting? It’s still listed under advertisements but see that some of these posts date back a couple months.
  3. Let's wait a little for the other player. And make a decision if he doesn't appear, continue with three or try other approach.
  4. *waves* Still here. Reading Otherscape! Future City of Mist is weird
  5. Hey hey! I won't say things have settled down, but at least I'm in a place I could be back to posting! It's kinda nice to see I didn't miss a lot.
  6. Everything is all right. Just swamped with work, studies and some personal problems.
  7. Please explain the nature of the power, and these tags: The world speaks to me; Fact or fiction?; The rational explanation; Black company office worker; Office Thespian; A strange, strange man; Allusionary world & Know-it-all anti-conformist.
  8. I am back. I hope we still have a game to run, and a new player. 😶‍🌫️
  9. Sorry, I was busy with real life stuff, but I am still here. I like the concept, but some tags will need some explanation. I will point them later.
  10. Sorry, I have some personal problems and I need to be away for a few days.
  11. I'm still keen and watching the forums. I see that we have someone else running up a character. When we start back up I'll still be here.
  12. Elroy Lee, Rift of Don Quixote General Details Name – Elroy Lee Mythos – Don Quixote Age – 25 Occupation – Office Worker Hobbies – Reading, writing, visiting art galleries and watching movies. Or that's what he did before work consumed his life. Likes – Art of all sorts, passion in any manifestation of it, dreaming Dislikes – His job, corporations, the status quo. Backstory Elroy was always a creative child. At first this was a point of pride for his parents, pointing to his insatiable love of reading and talent for creative arts in general as their point of pride. However, as he became older and older, he only became more engrossed with his imagination. Meanwhile, his parents started to shift focus to more useful fields, the sciences and especially being a doctor. They'd settle for lawyer too. Instead he pursued an art degree, failing to become a curator, a historian or an artist in the process. He found himself slinking into a corporate job just to make ends meet, even as his family kept telling him "I told you so." Awakening Event It wasn't too dramatic. He worked everyday, even on weekends, for his company. Coming in early, leaving late, grinding his body into dust to help reach their bottom line. He hoped that he could be useful. They just fired him. That lead him down a depressive spiral, burying himself away from reality. Eventually he started realising that the world was speaking directly to him. He followed his instincts and found himself a higher paying corporate slave job. Now he wants more, he can be important for once. Divination - See the Giants "It is easy to see," replied Don Quixote, "that thou art not used to this business of adventures; those are giants." Mystery – What is going on beyond rationality? What hides in the hidden dimensions of reality? A) Unfiltered wellspring of imagination D) Everything is connected in reality G) Reliable gut feeling H) The world speaks to me A) Fact or fiction? I am everything. A) Fantasy-prone F) Unconventional thinking H) Encyclopaedic knowledge of trivia A) A strange, strange man Training – Artiste Identity – They just don't get it, they don't get the deep commentary the banana taped on the wall is. A) Art degree C) The cultural zeitgeist J) Allusionary world B) Know-it-all anti-conformist Note: If this character is too whacky, I have a more serious character idea in mind as well.
  13. This probably is the right choice anyway, or we will have only two players. So we will probably take a break during this month, unless we can recrute new players.
  14. Oh, it's not even that. Like, work's getting CRAZY 'cause we're in the last month before APs. I... might need to drop out. If you guys would let me have a one-month sabbatical, I'd love to BE back, but... uh... I don't want to be the one in scenes that's making it weird.
  15. Just a few suggestions: You can use Space Continuum Sensitivity to try to locate the portals remains. You can try to go to the school and inquire for the girl. You can search the area where the car disappeared. You can talk to one person that claims to have seen the ghost. You can look for the weirdo that lives outside of town. You can browse the occult store.
  16. When to do stuff IC or OOC is always a little trickier in Play by post than at the table. As I see where we're at, we don't have much in the way of solid lead to point us towards a particular location or person. We've got hints of what is going on, but we need to convert those into something solid. Given that we can't rely on witnesses for anything other than vague memories we probably need to find stuff out first hand The only way I can think of doing this is to invest some time in staking out the neighborhood and hope to catch something when it's happening. If anyone has thoughts on other courses of action I'm happy to go with them.
  17. Kenna takes her coffee back to the corner booth. She bends over to her co-investigators. Oh man, look at this. How'd I end up being a baby-sitter? "Ok so I just heard some ghost stories. Rumors won't get us very far, but if that's connected maybe we can try and get a solid lead on that." "People getting the sudden urge to fight also jives with the 'youth' problem the locals have been having." "So what's our next step? I can't go strong-arming the locals on every little rumor. That chief will run me out of the suburb." "Maybe it's worth doing some snooping around the suburbs at night? Ghosts don't generally turn up in the middle of the day, and we've got one confirmed sighting late at night." OOC Sorry for the lack of the normal Kenna pic. I'm doing this at work and the firewall is blocking imgur. Will fix when I'm back at home.
  18. I don't mind. Not every post needs to be a great one...
  19. Case 1: A Metal Prank After some time, where each one of them tries to do their own thing, and let their minds wander over the matter of the day or over the snippets of information they get at the cafeteria, they return to the table and finish their meals or thoughts before trying to engage into a conversation. They need to decide about their next step. They will try to find the missing children? Or find the child involved in the car accident? Or discover where the car disappeared for more clues? Or maybe even investigate ghost stories? Kenna Kenna uses her sagacity and her cop instincts to hear the conversations around her table. Two men were talking about how they had a fight with their wives. Out of nowhere, they just had a weird urge to start a fight. She also hears a conversation about the ghost of Springfield. It seems some people reported already seeing it. Lindsay Lindsay is not very interested in hearing other conversations, but they reach her ears anyway. When she goes to the bathroom. She hears a woman crying convulsively. And while crying she is a having a conversation on her phone and trying to apologize to someone. Near the counter, she hears people talking about the children's disappearance. One of them mentions a weirdo that lives outside of town. Myrtle Myrtle is not interested in hearing other conversations. She is more concerned in being attacked at any minute, but they reach her ears anyway. She hears from a child with other family that she claims to have seen a ghost at her school. One person mentions that the bookstore nearby has an awesome collections of books, specially at the occult section.
  20. You can share information OOC to speed things up as long as later you resume them IC. I also decided to make all acquired information available to everyone for the same reason. It would be really nice to have a conversation comparing notes, but not always you get what you want. 😭 Anyone has any doubt or question to make? Just ask. I am trying to mimic a particular writing style of a famous police author, and the goal is to be as disorienting as possible at a first glance.
  21. I got it! By the by... is my slow-ass post rate holding people back? I love my character and like the game, but I'm also aware that I am NOT being good and regular as a member of the group.
