Detailed Description

Shadows of the City is a three part adventure in the Dark Champions setting using the Hero System 6th edition "Champions Complete". Characters will be built on 300 points with up to 60 points of complications. Active Points: 50 - 60 with an average of 20 PD/ED Defenses.

This adventure is a 'street level' style adventure in the vein of the Netflix Marvel Series The Defenders (Daredevil, Powerman, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and The Punisher, though the Punisher wasn't in Defenders). Let the big, powerful four color super heroes protect the world. You are protecting this city and its innocent citizens!

  1. What's new in this game
  2. OOC: OK, Waiting on to join the Roll20, position and RP Medusa's entrance. Also, , you *should* have control of the Fluke's avatar now. I think you posted before I was able to set you for control of it. Right now, its like you're strolling down the street to the bank (which considering the RP, might be just fine!) but you ended your RP with entering the Bank so I just wanted to point that out so you can make changes if need be. I do not want to hold off too long before getting the scenario started. I will not be home Monday night but I might get some time on my laptop. IF I can, I'll go ahead and run with the next update in the game. If not, it will happen Tuesday night. I'll be a little slower in full updates when we are in combat and using the map because I generally can't use my laptop at work and I can't run Roll20 on my phone (which is how I do most of my updates). If SB can't get on to post, that will be fine. Medusa can just be strolling along or on a bus or something when the BLEEP hits the fan and jump in as soon as her tentacled head can make it. (Do Gorgon's have Snakes that grow out of their head or Tentacles on their heads with Snake heads at the end?) She can fly so she might actually be somewhere else and zip on over when she 'gets word' of the BLEEP and the fan and whatever else We've been really going at it (its been fun for me!) so this "long" wait to get things started is killing me 😁(ooo, all the way since Thursday!) as I think I wrapped up all but one of the individual RPs (wrapped up for the time being or finished it off... though in all honesty, you'll all be coming back to that little blurb of a story at some point in the future, some more obviously than others such as Geist's investigation where RR will have to make INT rolls throughout whatever we do as her character gets chances to investigate her own murder. I'm calling it a "Task" and you'll all get them eventually. Basically, you'll make INT or an appropriate Skill roll to accomplish something, but that something takes time so its not just a 'succeed or fail' kind of thing. How it works is when you have a few hours to devote to your 'task', you get to make the roll and how ever much you succeed on the roll +1 (because if your roll is a 14- and you roll a 14, technically you succeed, so you get the +1 as a minimum to count toward your Task Success Number. She had three rolls to start her task off and rolled 14, 14, and 13 on a 14- roll for a result of 1, 1, and 2 to get 4 points toward her TSN. When you hit the TSN, you accomplish the Task). anyway, I'm looking forward to how we're going to save Sovereign City!
  3. Ok, I should have said +1 for the task rolls since rolling your success number would result in zero... So two 13s and a 12 will net her 4 points toward the task completion
  4. Chess (Chester Alsworth) OCV: 7 | DCV: 7 | Stun: 20/20 | Body: 10/10 | End: 20/20 | Conditions: none | Skill Levels: none applied =========================================================================== Testing a new header
  5. The city's Dangerous Threat Unit arrives on scene. It is designed to contain super powered threat, at least temporarily until the State DTU can relieve the city of the responsibility. Rumors abound of a Federal DTU but it is vehemently denied at all levels of government. When they arrive, the LT tries to BS The Fluke about how they were preparing to take down Samson and would have likely acted in the next few days. Somehow, Charles doesn't believe him. Of course, the two Drayden Flats precincts are so overwhelmed by the crime in the area that a rogue super villain in Drayden Flats hardly hits the SCPD's radar. The Lieutenant does thank the Fluke for his intervention and protecting the lives of innocents in the area and the safety of his men who surely would have been put in harms way. Sadly, a few days later, Charles finds a news report on on the internet where gang violence erupted on that block just a few hours after the arrest of Samson. Apparently a rival gang used the opportunity to take out Samson's gang. Several members of the gang were gunned down as well as a member of the rival gang. No innocents were killed but one man took a stray bullet in the arm. It isn't hard for Charles to put two and two together and figure out that his "informant" on Samson was fake, using a now dead email address and a fake name. The videos of Samson were real and Samson was a legitimate threat to the neighborhood but the power vacuum switches from one gang to another. We will call it on this thread for now but if you'd like Charles to do something further, we can explore that in another RP thread.
  6. I think it's simpler to have Stun/Body/End in posting templates. I've also run into the problem on Roll20 sometimes where those colored bars are visible to the player and GM, but not the other players. No idea why. In a post header here, it'll be public knowledge. Will check Roll20 when I get home.
  7. OK, I brought my laptop into work today and snuck a few minutes to log into Roll20 to assign control over your character avatars. If you got 'in' the game as of this posting, you should have control over your toon. please let me know if you don't so I can fix it. , I moved Chester down by Ben the Beggar since you interacted with him in your RP but you are not limited to Chess being in that spot. Feel free to move him around as you see fit now that you should have control of the avatar. BTW, Typically I use the bars to track information. It is especially useful in D&D for clerics and other healers to know 'hey, my team mate is really hurting" and who might need it first. anyway, we don't have any healers so we may not need the bars as they do tend to take up a lot of space and some of your posting templates have STUN, Body, and END already listed there. Do we want to take those out to help clear up the board? I used the following for those bars; RED = Body Green = Stun Blue = End I put everyone's numbers in so doublecheck and make sure I put the right numbers in. Anyway, if you joined the Roll20 game, you should have control of your character avatar now.
  8. DCV: 6 Stun: 24/24 Body: 13/13 End: 40/40 Status: none It was quite a beautiful morning. John had gotten up early to go for a run along the riverside path, then a shower, and when he got home it was still there. He'd hung a few paintings in a uptown show last weekend, to good reception from the rich folks viewing it. Maybe because he was there in person. Who knows with rich people. He'd spoken with one old lady who asked why he had so few available here, and he'd let slip that he had more completed at home but this was all the space the gallery could let him use. She and her driver had appeared at his apartment yesterday and he graciously showed them his workroom and what was ready for sale. While he was thinking to himself about what to charge, given he was avoiding hanging and agent fees on this sale, and before he'd even reached for his phone to share his payment app details, the woman had already finished writing it. A check. Who uses checks in this day and age? Already tired of looking at it (and the more than generous amount it was good for), he got in the car and headed downtown to the bank. After zipping into a tight spot in the parking garage, a feat no less challenging than maneuvering a fire truck down an alley in Chinatown, he happily walks the couple of blocks to the bank and gets in line at a teller. He couldn't find a deposit slip, but he does have a bank statement on his phone and his ATM card. Hopefully that's enough. Not being one to just stare at the back ahead of him while standing in line, he's continually looking around, and notices Fluke come in the door. He gives a wave and a nod, but honors the almost museum-like quiet of the bank by not calling out. OOC:
  9. The guy is KOed at zero stun so he can't run away at this point. You can wait for the end of a couple turns turn when he gets a free recovery and will eventually wake up to work your "voodoo" on him.v We can consider the thread done.
  10. The Fluke OCV: 8 | DCV: 8 | Stun: 40/40 | Body: 13/13 | End: 40/40 | Conditions: none His confrontation with Brown Samson the previous week had gotten the wheels spinning in Charles' mind. Dealing with criminals, superpowered and otherwise, was important work and he was hoping he could make headway on that front with Heroix. But many of the problems faced in these communities couldn't be solved by punching somebody. There just seemed to be a wholesale failure by government to deal with the problems facing these communities. There were a lot of charitable organizations and outreach groups trying to do good work, but they were vastly underfunded. So, Charles was heading to the 1st Bank of Sovereign City to meet with one of their Private Equity Bankers about setting up a 501(c)(3) charitable account that he could use to move money around to different groups doing good work around Sovereign City. Coming to Old Town was always a pain in the butt. The narrow streets and lack of parking made driving a chore, so he drove one of his motorcycles and parked it just down the street from the bank. It really was a nice day. Maybe he'd take the bike out for a ride to Pt. Reyes after he was done here. Lost in thoughts of sun and surf, Charles enters the bank. Mechanics
  11. Don't push it, kid... Initially disappointed, Eleanor at least could file this under "rich (and arrogant) enough to ignore basic safety protocols". Seriously, the number of times working at Morley's when the fire alarm got pulled and they had to WALK down all seventy flights of stairs...OK, it was only a couple of times, but you don't forget WALKING QUICKLY DOWN SEVENTY FLIGHTS OF STAIRS EVEN FOR A FIRE DRILL! No, time to fly back to Chess' office, start reading what was soooo interesting about her file and make copies JUST in case...
  12. Charles sits down on the unconscious Samson's chest and sucks in air trying to clear his head. That could have gone better, but a win's a win. Seeing all the peeking faces gone from the windows and doors, he sighs and stands up. Samson's down, but there's still alot of work to do here. Walking the street and picking up his discs, he reaches into one of the pouches on his belt and pulls out a stack of Heroix.com business cards and sticks them in mailboxes and on car windshields. With that done he stays nearby the unconscious Samson, waiting for Police and EMS to show up and pulls out his phone and dials Victoria. "Hey Vic. Let me tell you about my night..."
  13. Jonny Chen OCV: 6 | DCV: 7 | Stun: 50/50 | Body: 20/20 | End: 40/40 | Conditions: none Jonny doesn't usually do much work before 4 PM, but sometimes he'll log in, just to see if he can get anything. To his surprise, he got a drop off in Oldtown pretty quickly, but then nothing for a bit and he decided to log off and go enjoy the day for a bit. Being a bit flush after the successful weekend, he figures he'll find a nice but not too pricey spot for lunch and treat himself. It's far too nice a day to spend cooped up in a car, especially in Oldtown traffic (the street layout dates to horse and carriage days and it shows with one way streets everywhere), so he finds a parking spot and starts walking. Mechanics
  14. Chess rented his office in the East Havens on the second floor of a four story building complex. The building was managed by the Soveign City Asset Management corporation. At first, Alsworth thought that naming the company so the nickname was SCAM was just poorly thought out. Two years of dealing with them, he realized it should have been a sign. Constant complaints about the broken heater, leaky plumbing, and problematic other tenants (Chess didn't mind that there were drug dealers on the floor above him, but did they HAVE to play Drake at maximum volume every single day?) were met with complete and utter apathy. But SCAM was very quick to demand rental payment, on the fourth every single month. Chess had the money. But out of spite, he held out to the last second to pay them. Normally, he paid through his computer. But today there was some internet issues at the office (one more thing to complain about), so Chess trodded down to the First Bank to make sure SCAM was paid. Walking outside the bank, Chess spotted a beggar on the street, holding up a cardboard sign reading "Need food. Anything can help. God Bless." Chess kept a few loose singles in his pocket (he didn't ever pull out his wallet in the street) and handed them to the Beggar as he neared the bank.
  15. The Shriek Sergio believed that the relationship between Talent and Management in the Music Industry should always been at least somewhat adverserial. That's why when his manager Earnst Featherfall wanted him to be somewhere he made it a point to always been either at least a half-hour late or a half-hour early. Nothing in between. At least this time it wasn't for a gig. Earnst finally talked him into opening an actual bank account and he felt stupid. At least he could rest assured that this clown at the desk probably felt worse. He smirked, just to savor the moment. Those familiar with Soverign City's music scene might actually recognize him. Sergio Pearson, a local boy done good. Sort of. A rising star in the music scene who played a bluesy-rock guitar like he made a deal with the devil for his fingers. The common belief was that the main thing holding him back from national stardom was that Sergio had a bad combination of artistic purity and being completely blind since just about birth. Those that have their ears closer to the ground, or even actually know him, know that a bigger issue then both of them was that Sergio Pearson was a creature of sarcism, spite, and he had a nasty temper when it did come out. "Mr. Pearson, it would probably go easier if we waited for your business associate." "Probably. But I'm Talent and he's Management. There has to be some friction just on principle." the blind man chuckles. The guy does too really, a little gift. "Well, our Braille reader is - alright, I'll admit it. We can't find it. Pretty sure it's in a storage closet somewhere." "Well I ain't signing anything without reading it first. Or Earnst getting here and him reading it. I'll wait." Was he enjoying this? Yes - yes he was. OOC
  16. The Shriek He manages to calm down a little, before killing the guy at least. Deep breathes, long and deep breaths as he tries to get back together. He drops to his Devil Voice again. Get Out of Soverign City. Never Come Back. Keep Slapping Around Your Girlfriends and Their Kids and Even That Won't Stop Me. Run. OOC PRE to make sure it sticks.
  17. The shriek knocks the man into next week then, when the man's unconscious form flops over onto the ground, he begins to settle down, realizing that he'd kind of lost it on the creep. His breathing starts to slow and the adrenaline begins to subside and he begins to think more clearly again. Quickly checking, the man is alive but he's hurt; Sergio broke his check bone and blackened up his eye (Sergio did 1 body damage). He'll be fine. But thankfully the man was a large, tough man or that could have gone a lot worse. Now what?
  18. OK, map is ready. You should have control of your toon and hopefully can place Iron Tiger wherever you want... hopefully , same for you.
  19. Its a beautiful spring Saturday in Sovereign City. A nice breeze keeps the smog flowing up into the western hills and crispens the air. Its a great day to do chores around the house and get errands done early so you can enjoy the warm afternoon after a nasty, stormy winter. For whatever reason, you are out and about on this day and find yourself at the First Bank of Sovereign City. OOC: OK, the map is up join the game. As soon as I've posted this, I'll be putting up your avatars but I can't assign you control until you join the game. Once you are in, you can place your character anywhere on the map that you like. Your character might not even be IN the bank but passing by to get to somewhere else. How you want to handle it, and where and what your character is doing is up to you. From left to right, the dark 'bar' is the road, specifically parking, the grey next to it is the side walk. The ovals along the sidewalk and road are parking meters (quarter or credit card) The dark gray lines are the walls of the bank and the white rectangles in the walls are windows. The strange circles (though they are in perspective from the top looking down so they are not actually circles) are interior ATM machines. There are Teller Windows across the top and bottom of the map. There are four tellers working at the moment as can be seen by the people standing right in front of the tellers. The small gold circles connected by red lines are the classic divider ropes with hooks that connect to stands. The center area of the map is carpeted with two desks with filing cabinets (the gray rectangles). This is where new accounts are opened and various things (like loans) are applied for. One married couple is sitting at a desk across from a loan officer as they apply for a home loan. Between the tellers and the carpet are wooden tables with a divider running down the middle (the gray rectangle) where people can fill out paper work (more often used 'back in the day' when people actually used checks and balanced bank books) The First Bank of Sovereign City is in the Old Town district. There are a lot of old timey shops and lots of tourism, though at this time of day (about 10am) its pretty sleepy. Old Town has some buildings in it that are as old as the city, some even dating back to the 1600s. Most are a mix of 1800s and 1700s. Most of the ground floor are shops of various kinds, mostly tourist traps, with many higher end restaurants, several of which have been featured on the Food Network shows. For now, your RP is introductory. Tell us about your character and why they are there. Let the game begin :D
  20. The Shriek Why? Why? Why? He replayed the moment for him already, if the guy couldn't figure it out from there then what was the point in a lecture? Properly pissed off, he lashes out more and more to push the guy over the edge. He wasn't a professional fighter or anything, but in the dark with a screaming demon - yeah, that tends to put people off balance. OOC Yep, noticed that too. Mathematically speaking just the Sonic Blast by itself's damage wasn't *terrible* but not great either. The punch though should have done way better. Rolling to Calm Down a bit, but yeah. He's going to want to stop moving. So rolling - Punch 1 - 7, 12 Damage Punch 2 - 14, 9 Damage Then Calm Down - 8
  21. Actually, each attack's damage is a separate roll and applied individually against his defenses. He has no mental defenses so all 6d6 (21) goes straight through. He is practically KOed by that (25 stun) so the punch doesn't quite finish him off. I have to say, for damage, that was very underwhelming... Would have been great attack rolls though. He has 4 PD so absorbs all of Shriek's punch and has 4 stun left. The man grabs his head. He has never experienced a migraine headache like this. He takes The Shriek's punch and , still holding his head, cries out "Why?" He doesn't try to attack, he just cries out "why" as if he thinks smacking a child and/or wife is appropriate. You have two attacks again. Because you are enraged, I believe you need to keep punching the guy... But thankfully you don't do a ton of damage with your punches so you won't kill him (accidentally)
  22. The Shriek ---OOC--- OOC Alright. Sonic Blast is 6d6, Fisticuffs is another 2 1/2 d6. I figure he does still have enough self-control that he'd stop before killing the guy, so I'm thinking just rolling 9 and we remember that the last one is a half-die instead.
  23. Sounds good, plus you can photo copy the pages. He would likely have a copy machine
