It’s an odd time for a catfolk thief and a gnoll merchant to make very tempting offers to strangers in town. Or, perhaps it’s not odd at all.

Rayja Bouhouche - Human Cleric   Character thread AC: 16 | HP: 10/10 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 15 | Spell Slots: 1st 2/2 + 1/1  As they leave Haakan's home Rayja stops in the street just outside the red door and gathers her companions before they go any further. "Just to make this clear. I don't trust that man any more than the lady and there seems to be quite a few layers of deception in this game so we need to be on our guard all the time. He did give us a little more information to follow up on though so I suggest we start there. Looking for this Nassoor." She gives each of her componions a look to see how they feel about this. Cat and Mouse As the group prepared to leave Walker took one last look around as he asked about the gnolls companions, no sooner had he asked than he had spotted them, the two kobolds, dressed in all black were perched in small hammocks up in the juniper tree. He also noticed that the water in the fountain was moving in a way that it should not have been, almost of its own valician. She looks about as he feels. Then he looks back to Hakaan. "Your three servants from before appear absent." Walker isn't asking so much as he is stating a fact. He wishes to see is doing so draws answers or ire. Either will tell him more about this fat feaster. She takes a step back and lets her companions finish the discussion. She doesn't trust this man anymore than the feline lady, but he has given them some more information to work with and that is to his advantage at the moment in Rayja's book.   6. Ahura the Night Sky - Basteti Catfolk AC: 14 | HP: 8/8 | Initiative: +3 | Passive Perception: 13 | Spell Slots: 1st 2/2 | Inspiration: 3/3 Ahura's demeanor has shifted almost completely. Her tail still lashes in mild unease, but her ears are now facing upwards, and there's the ghost of a smile on her lips. "I feel I owe you an apology, effendi. My initial opinion of you was far off the mark, though I do at least have the excuse of a painful memory tainting my judgement. However, you have proven far more forthcoming, and indeed, more generous, than the so-called royalty that left his mark upon me. And courtesy costs nothing, yet Henna has demonstrated herself stingy even with such a trifling matter." She brushes her hand over her scar in a nervous gesture. "You have earned my trust, as Henna has just as quickly lost it. My thanks for your honesty, the lead..." She picks up a small roasted fowl and starts to delicately pull the succulent flesh from the bones. "And for the meal."       Mechanics Main Hand: Empty Off Hand: Empty Action: Your action goes here.   7. Cat and Mouse "Why should we trust you any more than that Mistress?" Rayja asked. The gnoll stopped laughing for a moment and went back to eating "Pay attention woman. Because ... I ... do ... not ... want ... to ... kill ... you." he said really slowly as he pulled the flesh from the bone. "If you want us to work for you then you could start by telling us something about your relation to Mistress Mjelidi. Who is she? Why do you want to humiliate her?"  Rayja continued. "She is a collector of things, usually  for others, or things of high value but she covets all magic, and has a tendency to lick her lips when she sees it. Henna purrs when she is intrigued. She fights dirty and aggressively, like an alley cat. I once admired her, but my affections were only returned with gnoll curses. So now we are advisaries." he explained in the simplest of terms. "Then perhaps you could give us an advance payment to build trust and goodwill." Rayja again interjected but the gnoll just shook is head and smiled as Blue chimed in for an advance on their payment. Hakaan responded as he tossed another crabshell to Blue "You have your advance payment." he said before laughing once again. "The bird talks a good game but I can give you a lead to follow up on in the Perfume District." he continued as he wiped his mouth clean with his sleeve. "The man you seek, Raheed, he owes money to a local hustler - a lot of money - and it is no secret. When the man he owes Nassoor el-Rabat saw him a few hours ago he gave chase but quickly lost him. Nassoor is overseeing a building project that is under construction, I can give you that location and you can go and talk to Nassoor. Blue-crest (Heru Bard) Sheet AC: 14 | HP: 9/9 | Initiative: +5 | Passive Perception: 9 | Spell Slots: 1st 2/2 | Bardic Inspiration d6: 3/3 When Hakaan offers 300 gp Blue contemplates the 'loss' but weighs it against knowing more about the gnoll and where he lives. Taking the crabshell Hakaan rejected Blue blurts out. "I'd give you a massage if you paid me that kind of money! But we're splitting it so maybe not." Her brain then processing what Rayja said amends ".. what my companion said, we would like a bit more information if we have time for it. A small advance to build goodwill and cover 'fees' would be nice, I don't really want to be carrying 300 gold on me while digging through the city for someone."  The Heru instinctively rubs her arms together, her mind already drifting to what to spend the windfall on. Rayja Bouhouche - Human Cleric   Character thread AC: 16 | HP: 10/10 | Initiative: +2 | Passive Perception: 15 | Spell Slots: 1st 2/2 + 1/1  Rayja stops eating after trying out five or six of the different kinds of meat and then goes back to looking at the scene with disgust. When the gnoll starts laughing and rolling on the floor she meets Walkers eyes and shakes her head to acknowledge that she is as confused about all this as the other cleric is. "Why should we trust you anymore than that Mistress? We know you have a lot of eyes and helpers out there in the streets. There are other ways to screw us than killing us." She looks at Haakan with stern eyes. "If you want us to work for you then you could start by telling us something about your relation to Mistress Mjelidi. Who is she? Why do you want to humiliate her?" She pauses for a brief moment before continuing. "Then perhaps you could give us an advance payment to build trust and goodwill." Walker (Gearforged Cleric) AC: 18 (Chain Mail + Shield)) | HP: 11/11 | Initiative: -1 | Passive Perception: 15 | Spell Slots: 1st 2/2 | DM Inspiration: 0/0 The sight of someone that round rolling on the floor laughing at something prompts Walker to look to where Rayja and Blue are seated for cues on how one is supposed to react to this manner of oddity. (Is this gnoll off in the head to be making threats and laughing like this?)   After he looks to Blue and Rayja Walker then turns his visor to the other two persons of their party for their cues, their looks and their expressions, because Walker most certainly is at a loss here.   11. Cat and Mouse "You already have pieces in this game. So I would beg of you to indulge us. What is the story behind this gem that Mistress Henna desires?" Ahura asked. Between bites of meat the gnoll says "Mistress Henna Mjelidi is afraid of the Perfume District, that is why she sent you." he giggled and tore off another piece of meat  "She wants you to get this 'eye' or whatever it is." he laughs again "I simply want it first. It will humiliate her, and that will please me." he continues to laugh. "How much did she offer you?" he inquires. "Why would she want to kill us? She doesn't know any of us. Why is everyone suddenly interested in us?" Rayja adds between two bites. "That is the point, she can offer you anything, you do her bidding, take the risk and then she simply kills you and doesn't have to pay." he says as he gobbles down another meaty peasant leg before throwing another crabshell over to Rayja "I don't like those." Rayja watched the exchange and didn't think the gnoll would be much more trustworthy than the woman they had met.  Was this all sort of some game to them and her and her friends the pawns? "She did give in to giving us more gold quickly. I didn't think much of it then, but now that you mention it if her plans were to kill us what amounts she enticed us with wouldn't really matter would they." Blue offered. Hakaan pointed a greasy finger toward Blue "Bingo, I think he has figured it out." When Hakaan is told that the woman offered the group 600 gold coins to retrieve the eye he almost fell off his cushion and rolled across the floor laughing before calming down enough, licking each finger on his hand and saying "I will give you 300 solid. Not a penny more. AND I won't kill you, AND you know where I live. You don't have to wait until 'I find you.'" he said before regaining his composure. "So do we have a deal? With a crab claw in one hand Blue waves it toward Hakaan. "She did give in to giving us more gold quickly. I didn't think much of it then, but now that you mention it if her plans were to kill us what amounts she enticed us with wouldn't really matter would they." Pointing the crab claw to Rayja and then Ahura the Heru continues. "What they said, we seem to be diving in deep to something we need more information on." Blue cracks the claw open and slurps the meat out with her beak. Then she takes a closer look at what is offered. She picks up a crabshell and smells it before putting some of its meat in her mouth with her fingers. She takes in the taste as a connoisseur and when she has swallowed the mouthful she instead picks up a piece of spit-roasted sheep and gives it the same gastronomic inspection. While she tries out a few more of the dishes, a bite each, she listens to Ahura and watches the gnoll for his reaction to her questions. "Why would she want to kill us? She doesn't know any of us. She seems more disappointed than threatened by how the gnoll's largeness far outstrips his largesse. However, she does note that despite Blue's inelegant approach, Hakaan is fine with surrendering a portion of his feast. Nodding, she approaches the table, wraps a couple of the heavy pies in cloth, then falls back to a respectful distance.   "I must admit my ignorance. I have only recently been released from my thousand and one nights of service in the City of Brass, and know only the bare minimum of the city, much less its inhabitants. I already suspected there were games being played in the shadows, but the idea the dagger Mistress Henna was hiding behing her back was more literal than metaphorical did not cross my mind. That being said, I doubt that even one of your...noble stature...would aid a group of five wayward and motley travelers purely out of the goodness of your heart." She tilts her head, sending her silvery hair cascading in an appealing ripple. "You already have pieces in this game.   15. Cat and Mouse As Rayja enrtered the courtyard she knew that Hakaan was a fat gnoll - that much is unmistakable - but as she approached, the extent of his obesity becomes clear. He is swathed in a colorful thawb that covers him but threatens to burst at the seams due to his girth. He eyed her as she approached but continue to eat without saying a word. Walker, whom was slightly behind the woman tried to determine just how much food was here, at least enough for a dozen individuals. As Blue approached closer and moved to take a seat the bard made his offer "Do we get to share some of this while we talk?". The gnoll just wiped the grease from his mouth long enough to gesture to the food as if saying 'go ahead.' He then burst out into a laugh that sounded like a swarm of angry hornets being shaken inside a tin can. Even being in the city for a few days had not inoculated the heru to city life. So many things to see and stories to learn. Entering the courtyard Blue ignores her companions obvious disgust with the gnoll who wanted to meet with them, not all folks were plesant to look at, there were enough stories and examples in her village of this.   Seeing the gnoll at his feast Blue took a step ahead of her new found, 'friends' might be too strong a word, companions. Blue started to talk as elegantly as she could while she moved to sit near the gnoll. "So, you wanted to meet- We all can see things beyond our ken are involved, perhaps you can shine some light on events as they relate to us. But first..."   Blue gestures to the feast laid out in front of the gnoll.   "Do we get to share some of this while we talk?"   Blue gives the gnoll a predatory smile.   "A girl's got to eat afterall." (Most likely mid-step inside too.)   It takes Walker a moment to bury his disbelief before he follows Rayja inside. Once inside the courtyard, still feeling discombulated (and disgusted), the armored figure turns its helmet's visor upon the others of the group in a silent question, hoping agaist reason that he is not witnessing this much gluttony.    If and or once others begin talkng, Walker takes a closer look on the laid feast. How many people he could feed with this food, wonders he. How many? Just...how many? She looks at her companions to see if any of them wants to take the lead in the conversation with the fat gnoll.   19. Cat and Mouse   Rayja knocked upon the red door and found it slightly ajar. Pushing the door on open Rayja could see a small courtayrd, perhaps thirty feet wide and thrity-five feet long with another door on both the east and west walls and another large double door at the far end.   The Courtyard The scent of honeysuckle and the sound of gentle birdsong and dancing water cling to this oasis of beauty and calm in the bustling city. A long, pillared balcony overlooks the open courtyard, the centerpiece of which is a burbling fountain and a lush, leafy juniper tree.   A fine, silk cloth hangs above the left side of the courtyard, shading a small group of finely carved tables and platters surrounded by cushions.   Hakaan is here, eating an enormous meal under the courtyard’s canopy. She is also wary of all the eyes that seem to be focused on them. It was quite obvious that they had been drawn into something bigger than it first appeared.   She just nods in reply to Ahura's warning. "Let's see what this meeting is all about. It feels like all this is bigger than a simple thief and a stolen gem." Clearly there is a backside to all the lovely fragrances that the refined perfumes represent.   For a moment she almost forgets what their purpose here today is as she lets the others do the asking about Raheed. However, it's clear that they won't find him easily before they are set to meet with the gnoll.   "I say we go meet that man and his servants to see if we can get a clearer picture of what this is all about.   26. Cat and Mouse   The Perfume District is where the city’s perfumeries and reputable potion-makers toil. As the group moves onto the district’s islands and into increasingly unsavory alchemical shops, distilleries, factories, and storage facilities, they begin to hear about Raheed when they ask about the man they are after. It turns out that he isn’t very popular among the people here, who describe him as everything from an unsavory character to a scourge upon the district.
