Detailed Description

Welcome to Theros!

spacer.png

You kneel upon the cold marble floor of the temple, head bowed. The smoke of your offering curls lazily upwards towards the oculus, carrying with it your hopes. It is said that only a fool seeks the attention of the gods, for their attention is fickle and their whims capricious. But those who survive their touch are blessed with immortality.

Theros is a world inspired by Ancient Greece, and the tales and mythology within. Or at least that's the aspect I'm leaning into. The Gods are real and play an active role in the world, albeit largely to further their own agendas. Equally they are flawed beings, prone to jealousy, rage and pique just like the mortals doomed to be pawns in their games. They reward those who worship them with devotion and act in their interest, and meddle in the lives of those who oppose them. Magic, monsters and mythical items exist, but are rare - the source of legends. The average mortal is far safer paying appropriate homage to the gods, and hoping they never actually interact with any of the former, as their life is likely to be cut short if the do. Unfortunately, Fate cannot be denied and sometimes they find themselves wrapped in such tangles, requiring the aid of Heroes. Or perhaps the Gods have sent omens to their Champions directly, and it is dangerous to ignore their desires...

What to expect

A series of one shot "Monster Hunt" / "Monster of the Week" episodes strung together across multiple levels

Significant amounts of combat

Relatively rapid milestone levelling (on a PbP scale) - level following each "Hunt"

Heroic stories and action

Posting rate 2-3/week

What not to expect

A sandbox world - by all means find your own reason for why you seek out glory or repeatedly engage in dangerous quests, but you do.

Lots of space for introspection and character growth - this is a series of one shots, with downtime space given between for character discussion/growth/interaction that will largely be driven by the players (I'm imagining one time skip thread between 'episodes')

Complex moral quandaries

An overarching story - the characters are the common thread

Myself

I've played 5e for a while, but this will be my first attempt to DM a game. Which is why I'm doing a series of pre-written and relatively short adventures. I like to think I'm fairly open to questions, ideas, and criticism, but so do most people I guess.

Character Creation

Level 1, 27 Point Buy or Standard Array

Race Restriction: Human/Centaur/Leonin/Minotaur/Satyr/Triton/Goliath (flavoured as Giantblooded)

Background: Any, including Custom, but excluding the 'feat' backgrounds e.g. those from Strixhaven, Dragonlance etc.

Supernatural Gift: As per Mythic Odyssey of Theros Character Creation

God: As per Theros Pantheon

Class: No restriction, but make sure it fits the setting. The commonest source of magic is divine, and feel free to "reflavour" other classes as divine in origin. Paladins should have a specific deity that suits their Oath. No guns. Certain types of Artificer may be harder to sell. Also including the home-brew Oracle subclass from Kibblestasty "https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-M-WtrKeZNFdEXq0MKXw"

No doubt I've forgotten some things, so please do inquire within...

  1. What's new in this game
  2. Sorry for my inability to contribute 😕 Thanks for the game! Holidays ironically have me playing less, not more :(
  3. Sorry as well, I've been really enjoying it, games always seem to suffer over the Holiday season (especially for southern hemisphere, as it's our Summer Holidays down here) I'd love to continue, but if this game is wrapping up, thank you all for some awesome roleplaying, I'd be happy to play with you all anytime.
  4. I’m sorry that I’ve not done more to keep this going. Thank you for the opportunity for letting me play. Take care, everybody.
  5. Having been on shaky legs for a little while, this game unfortunately seems to have ground to a halt all round, so I'm going to call it and archive it. Pleasure playing with you all, and thanks for entertaining my learning experience - I certainly gained something from it.
  6. Aristaeus | Akroan Fighter 1 | HP 13/13 | UnscarredWhen you take damage, you can use your reaction to roll a d12. Add your Constitution modifier to the number rolled, and reduce the damage by that total. After you use this trait, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest. 1/1 | Stone's EnduranceWhen you take damage, you can use your reaction to roll a d12. Add your Constitution modifier to the number rolled and reduce the damage by that total. You can use this trait a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest. 2/2 | Second WindYou have a limited well of stamina that you can draw on to protect yourself from harm. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your fighter level. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. 1/1 Aristaeus packs away the last of the food available before the servants recover the platters and usher them on their way. He accepts his purse in turn and tucks into his gear. The giant accepts the keeper's offer and eats while they discuss. "So, with or without the guide? I'm sure they spied our return." OOC Move - Action - Reaction -
  7. After a little while, Vasilis strolled back in alongside Athenia, still sporting a wide smile. "Everyone is happy then I assume, hm? No further questions? If so, I'm sure you wish to get started right away - I'll not delay you any longer. I'll obviously pay today at the retainer fee, Athenia here will organise your payments, and the carriage can be collected any time from my estate," With that, he leaves, leaving you with the strong impression of being dismissed. Notably, the free food and drink seems to stop flowing as well, servants appearing to silently sweep away trays and tidy up around you. Athenia withdraws 4 small pouches from beneath her royal blue cloak, handing one to each of you. "You can, of course, collect the rest either when you return or daily - though if you're coming by every day you'll never make it to the hippocamp," she adds smiling. She leads you back to the estate entrance - a much quicker route without needing to wind through the aquarium it seems, and you shortly find yourselves presenting before the city proper again, guardsmen marking your names as you enter. You travel back through the City of Passage, bustling and noisy in the early afternoon sun. Already in sharp contrast to the cleanliness of the estate you see packs of gulls set upon discarded fish-heads, fighting over scraps with stray dogs. The harbour itself though is quieter, day boats out, night boats in and crews sleeping. It doesn't take long to find you way back to the Gilded Goat. The lunchtime crowd has largely left, only a few late comers still sitting and drinking, giving you relatively privacy in the main tavern. The keeper offers the remainder of a fish broth with bread for lunch, but aside from the prodigious appetite of the half-giant, most of you are still feeling replete from Vasilis generous offerings. As you lean back on oaken chairs, gold comfortably heavy in your purses with the promise of more just a day away, you discuss your next moves. From Vasilis' description, the lagoon where the hippocamp herd is nesting is approximately two days travel south along the coast, so you've not got that long before you start spending paid time in pursuit of the bonus.
  8. sorry been absent, had to travel for work, back now.
  9. No reason he can't ask when Vasilis gets back. So far you've gleaned the guy really wants the hippocamp, and has a lot of money.
  10. Kheiron's line works fine in the manor while discussing in private, I think. So let's just go with that. He does suggest that they would retreat to a more private location after the meeting though. I guess the question he'd be really interested in asking Vasilis is why he's willing to pay so handsomely for such a mundane-appearing task, but at the same time there is little reason to assume the answer would reveal anything.
  11. (CG Variant Human Nyxborn Wizard of Keranos) Kheiron had been unusually quiet, the turmoil in his head all but visible tempest to the others as well. Something, everything about this seems illogical. Why would Vassili need us for such a mundane task? Why would the underground specifically warn us against him? How did he know who we are and whence we come? What is Thassa's part in all of this? We lack a crucial piece of the puzzle and yet choosing a way to find that piece automatically places us on a side of the game board without an idea of what the game is... "I do believe we should map the task and what it requires a bit more, but I do believe that should we take the money, the task is something we should complete. And I do believe we should ultimately take the task anyways. I am satisfied with my knowledge of hippocamps and the journey shouldn't be overtly difficult, but we do of course have to prepare for unforeseen obstacles and issues, and I believe we ought to retreat to discuss proper preparations in more detail." As he talks, it is clear Kheiron is not quite as certain as normal; being on the wrong side of the information blackout did not sit well with him and while he could piece together some parts, the big picture still lacked crucial information.
  12. You're still in Vasilis estate, he has simply walked off to give you some privacy. However he's also said that if you need anything food or drink wise just holla, so clearly there are servants nearby in case. The extent you trust their discretion, and Vasilis himself, is up to you. Vasilis will return for an answer if Thursday or Friday! So if you let me know OOC which direction you intend on traveling at least I can advance the scene appropriately to alley, tavern or beachfront
  13. Am I to assume the party is in a position to discuss the matter safely? I would assume they would certainly seek a more private area to discuss the matter.
  14. Autarkos the Bold (a.k.a, "Daedelus") -- N Human Rogue Criminal Iconoclast HP: 8/8 | AC: 14 | PP: 12 | Init: +3| Speed: 30' | Proficiency Bonus: +2 | ATT (melee): +2 | ATT (ranged): +5 STR: +0 | DEX: +3 | CON: +0 | INT: +1 | WIS: +2 | CHA: +2 | SAV (Dex): +5 | SAV (Int): +3| SAV (Wis): +2| SAV (Cha): +2 Horrified at the so-called oracle's words as well as the giant's determination to accept the dubious assignment, the dashing scoundrel turns to the last of their group, Kheiron of Meletis, for his take on all this. "Tell me that we shouldn't do this, Kheiron, please! Can't we just take the money and run?"
  15. On your turn, you can use a bonus action to regain hit points equal to 1d10 + your fighter level. Once you use this feature, you must finish a short or long rest before you can use it again. 1/1 Aristaeus continues to eat and fill his backpack with food that can carry well. He frowns at Daedalus's suggestion, "yeah. I'm not taking his money and do nothing." "The only question that I have is if we're asking our mysterious friend for help or not." The giant continues to eat. There's no question if he has the room to put the quantity of food. OOC Move - Action - Reaction -
  16. Sorry but I'm not sure I even know your pseudonym, so I tend to go with what's on the header, as keeping a false name in my mind is way to hard between posts... I'm getting forgetful in my old age! edit: thanks for adding Daedelus in your header, I've edited my post.
  17. You could either report in daily to collect, or report at the end of the time period to collect. Basically he's paying you 10gp per day you spend working on the job whether or not you succeed, though how he knows you're working on it is up for debate. Any advance payment would need to be negotiated, he's already supplying a water tank wagon and mules to transport to captured beast. The bonus is only if you return with the creature.
  18. Oh. I wasn't sure. I thought that possibly Miranda's oracular abilities might've allowed her to pierce through Autarkos' attempt at subterfuge. 😉 Anyway, I have made the change that you recommended to make it easier for the others to remember his current nom de guerre. As for the retainer fee, does that mean we would have to report to Vasilis everyday to collect our 10gp or would we only get it after we turn in the hippocampus? Do we get the 100gp only if and when we return with the creature?
  19. I don't believe anyone knows his true name. It may help to update your post header to remind people? Incidentally, I'm not sure Vasilis has said he'd pay in advance, though lounging around for 7 days and collecting 70 gold wouldn't be prohibited 😉
  20. , forgive Autarkos' -- and my -- mental density, but does Miranda know the thief's true identity? I don't believe that my PC has divulged his real name to anybody yet.
  21. HP:14 | AC:18 | Init: +2 Perception: 15, Insight: 15 blindsight: 30' As Autarkos suggested veering from the quest to seize the retainer, Miranda, attuned to the unseen forces that shaped their destiny, felt the currents of fate intertwine with their choices. She stepped forward, her voice carrying a resonance that transcended the mundane. "Daedelus," she spoke with an ethereal cadence, her words like whispers from the beyond, "our journey is a tapestry woven by celestial hands. Before we act, let us seek the wisdom of the divine and consider that there may be more to this quest than meets the eye. The stallion is not merely a prize to be captured, but a guardian of a sacred herd, a creature bound by its own celestial purpose. " She looked reverently towards the loveable rogue, "There is more to life, than the mundane that you see before you" Miranda turns and somehow focuses on him "Daedelus, remember, in chasing the mundane, you risk overlooking the extraordinary."
  22. Autarkos the Bold (a.k.a, "Daedelus") -- N Human Rogue Criminal Iconoclast HP: 8/8 | AC: 14 | PP: 12 | Init: +3| Speed: 30' | Proficiency Bonus: +2 | ATT (melee): +2 | ATT (ranged): +5 STR: +0 | DEX: +3 | CON: +0 | INT: +1 | WIS: +2 | CHA: +2 | SAV (Dex): +5 | SAV (Int): +3| SAV (Wis): +2| SAV (Cha): +2 As the echoes of the footsteps of their wealthy host and his scholarly minion gently diminish as the pair walk away down the expansive marble corridors, babbling about sculptured coral, the quartet of adventurers take a moment to discuss their options at this point. The handsome thief, with a gleam in his eye, rubs his hands together in giddy expectation. "Well, well, well.... You heard the man -- a retainer fee of 10 gold per day, out to a week, for each of us with a 100 gold bonus should we actually bring this whozawhatzit back to him." "Daedelus" thinks about it for a minute, then adds, "I think we should just take the retainer fee and disappear. What do you others think?"
  23. Ok. My character is not much for discussion but it’s a great first step. Post away. I will follow cheers
  24. I rather thought our group would spend some time privately discussing our best course of action before embarking on our next adventure, but to be honest I'll do what everybody else wants to do. If everybody wants to find our "guide" first, I'm for it. If we just fast-forward to the hippocampus hunt, then that's okay with me, too.
  25. Need to vote: 1. Go directly there? 2. Find the Guide? Let's go players. The delay is all on us. cheers
