  2. The Starting Line As the countdown to start begins Zabir begins loosening his grip on the core. The entire ship thrums with energy. The small mock planets orbiting the core begin to move in an intricate dance as a circle of glowing sigils forms out of mana. The planets rapidly accelerate their dance and the engines hum as the countdown reaches one. The light changes to green and the archmage unleashes the core. Mana surges through the ship and the golden core begins to shine like the sun before the ship slams forward. Without any other crew Zabir only has to worry about theirself as they accelerate at breakneck speeds. It's a long way to Veehra, but as Mekhala fades in the rearview the archmage settles into a meditative rest for the trip. 3. The VIP Dome The delegation from Kish arrived onboard the Archmage's personal flagship, Gift of Light Shatters Ignorance. The golden pyramid unseated from the massive jet black palm of the the stylized ship to float gently down and dock with the VIP Dome. A dozen merchants and magi spilled out and conducted sufficient fanfare for the arrival of the Archmage. It had been nearly a decade since their last public appearance off Kish. Their face was gaunt. Their hands were nearly skeletal. It would seem that they was wasting away, and yet the air around them hummed with power. The fire in their sockets flared are they looked around the room. "We have prepared a demonstration," the mages voice was soft, but cut through the room. They raised one hand and projected an image of the prototype racing ship into the air above their retinue, "A racing ship has been retrofitted with a reignited thaumonuclear reactor core. This is one of the ancient engines maintained by the core seers of the House of Brimstone in the lost age of exploration. We have rediscovered the ancient magic, and reforged the enchantments. This ship will win your paltry race." The merchant-captains in their retinue smiled. The boss had a certain way of drumming up business. The Starting Line - A bit later Divine Fire Scours the Unworthy was a small ship built around a core clearly meant for a much larger ship. The core shined like Ophon and a mock solar system circled the ship as part of an intricate spell circle that warded off harm and pulled it through space on a wave of warped materium. The cockpit was an empty room of smooth black metal. The Archmage hovered alone in the center of the room. From there they stared directly into the open core of the ship, working quiet incantations to sooth the miniature sun inside. It was ready to race. It wanted to race. Only the Archmage's will kept it from burning through the void before the race even started.

The Most Sacred House of Brimstone Capital: Kish (79) Zabir, the Archmage of Kish Diplomacy 2 | Military 2 | Economy 10 | Faith 6 | Intrigue 2 With great effort, continued excavation into Kish uncovered ancient treatises on 4-dimensional runic cascade confinement, the missing piece to needed to recommission the ancient cores in the derelict ships that make up the ring. Further abroad merchants hear rumors of war and all the shady dealing that goes with it. Rumor has it that pirates are strong arming Kish's trade partners over superconductors. Sure would be a shame if a better trader undercut that deal after they went through the effort. In many ways it overlaps with the ideals of the Ophonic Mysteries, and it's tenets are easier for the layman. The Ophonic Mysteries are relegated to secret rites for core seers and their apprentices. Welcome WTU inspectors to Kish. WTU Inspection When the Archmage restructured the government there were certain vacancies left behind. In many ways the current government is effectively a feudal system. Every Kishic ship answers to a Lord Captain, even those that are permanently fused into the ring city. The Lord Captain may be elected or a hereditary title, each ship has their own customs. Among all these independent ships very few standards are enforced, but there are voidfarers and their Captains bend towards a utilitarian outlook that favors efficiency and at least some degree of safety. Recently conflicting forces were acting on trade vessels traveling between Kish and Badal. Information about the Union and it's goals for united workers had filtered in from chance meetings at port, but at the same time Badalian psychocapitalism had opened some captain's eyes to new heights. Thus crew of any individual ship the Union chose to inspect might be anything from indentured servants to a worker's co-op, with safety standards just as diverse.

[Military] ... [Military] ... [Military] ... [Military] ... Non-Actions Struggle against fate. For three years, the Bulwark has been in turmoil. The plans to fortify the Crosspaths into a great citadel fell through when violence came to the capital ship, brother turning against brother when the council officially declared the line of Argon dead. It was certain - a fact circulated through interplanetary news. They even had footage of the betrayal, leaked by loyalist hackers whose ends were granted no less kindly than Yanji's himself. The clip is simple: Yanji boards a small shuttle after departing from a meeting with the Council of Knights. It starts to depart, hovering away for a few seconds until it's shot from one of the automatic turrets that was posed to guard the venue. Still in view of the camera, the shuttle explodes and falls down into the molten surface of Badal. The line of Argon's final heir was pronounced dead within the hour, as the molten sulfur surface has never been survived by even the sturdiest of probes. The Orders call it a tragic accident, but tensions between them were already hot and the public does not believe this to be an 'accident' at all. Reports arrive that the only way the turret could have fired was if the council's joint keys had been provided for reprogramming, as firing it manually is physically impossible. At the council, it is known that the creation of private armies to fight the pirate menace had been forbidden. It was too easy to invite betrayal if none of the troops were sworn to the council before their orders. This was a step too far, it seems, even after the Emperor himself declared Yanji a member of the elect. What good was it to choose the young heir to a failed knight, who had yet to prove his mettle in battle? There were seasoned warriors among them, survivors of the war that craved nothing but their foe's annihilation. Others were tired of fighting wars they couldn't win. Others still had more exotic ideas, and so they all made their bid for power in the most traditional Bironian way of all - civil war. The fleet came alight with bloodshed and flame. What was first the mere death of the Archknight became a riot in the streets, and the burning of A Charge Amongst the Stars. Defiance against the emperor from the order of Strontium had reached a fever pitch, rebuking the Emperor's right to govern them after he named the very pirates that killed their prior Archknight a member of the elect. This work had been the finest and most famous piece in Bironian history, valued at millions of credits and a crown jewel of culture and history. Armies already drained from their fight against the Black Cloud Coalition in years past now raised common men to fight, swelling to a full count of 150,000 soldiers across the various factions. With no centralized rule, foreign powers sweep in to pick up the rubble. The Unions claim the only safe supply of Noble Metals, while the Eucrus Alliance now moved in to conquer territory once believed to be under Knightly protection in more peaceful times. The Archknight was still lost after two years of civil war, and the elect was rescinded as the situation only went from bad to worse with time. The Archknight's return was a surprise to everyone. It was certainly a surprise to him, as flesh burned and soul fled from body while the shuttle fell deep into the murderous depths of Badal. He prayed to the Gods. To the emperor. To the will of the universe and then to his fallen mother, lying dead and unavenged in his family crypt. A year passes, dead. Two; until the lower storms of Badal push the shuttle back up to the skies where it catches on an ancient extraction well that floats harmlessly on the outer edges of the crossroads. He should be dead by heat, by storm, starvation, the wounds he still bears, and by the very fall itself - the pressure from succumbing to the depths of the planet alone would have done him in, but here he remains - still breathing within the devastated remains of a ship that Fate seems to have inexplicably spared. Returning to the surface with the help of some gas miners, he takes some time to collect himself before returning to claim his place as Archknight. These next two years are filled with terror and drama as the civil war comes to a close and the council begins to learn the price of betrayal. One by one.

Further excavations into the ruins of his once vaulted city are done only at his discretion. With guidance from the core seers who once walked it's halls, excavation crews are able to locate the throne room and Archmage Zabir's private study. Little survived the destruction of the city, but among the Archmage's possessions a signet ring was found. Resource Trade Post Brahmaguptite x2 Mercantile Support, TP1 Technologies Technologies Arcane Amplification Nuclear Fusion Vacuum Adaptation History This is a place of two histories. One recent and a second that cannot be spoken openly. Centuries ago voidsmen found this unusual asteroid of twisted scrap metals and began their work reclaiming it. A city was forged of ancient ships, too damaged to ply their trade between worlds, but not yet devoid of the spark that lets them sustain life. Mostly they traded the ancient metal harvested from the asteroid, but sometimes surviving scraps of ancient technology were found and traded. Archeologists from across Tekhum were drawn to this site that seemingly held relics from before the war. As they cut deeper and excavated a spiraling pit into the layers of crushed metal they eventually found the core. A single obelisk of unknown material, dark as the void, is the center of the asteroid. No tool they had was able to mark it. It did not even make a sound when struck. No expert was able to interface with it, but even its presence exuded a crushing pressure. Eventually the pit turned towards the sun, and the obelisk came alive. The mining crew nearest the obelisk was consumed in a pulse of energy except one man whose body was seized by the ancient wizard who escaped from the obelisk. The forgotten coreseer quickly took control of the settlement and set to work reestablishing the colony as his personal seat of power. The second history is told by the Archmagi of the House of Brimstone and started long before the War of Endless Bombardments. The House of Brimstone crafted great and terrible magics for the Emperor during the age of subjugation. Their core seers were among the most powerful mages outside the great rings of Ophon. Their power grew as the empire was unified, but once the work was done they were a threat, which came to a head at the end of the War of Endless Bombardments. In a betrayal that has been erased from the long history of the empire, the Emperor unleashed a monstrous spell, crushing the orbital palace of the core seers into an orb of twisted metal. Millions died in an instant, leaving only the archmagi to see the destruction. There was no time to respond. In the next instant their wave forms were shattered and stilled. In a final curse the archmage swore to return. People The people of Kish are hereditary void travelers. They left the tyrannical gravity of planets behind in the early days of the empire. Their ancestors caged Ophon and spread humanity across Tekhum. They are human, but generations plying the void without the protective magnetosphere of a planet has drastically increased their genetic variation. They at least share an identifiably human body plan, with two arms, legs, and eyes. Since the reincarnation of the wizard the people of Kish have been given a new purpose whether they wanted it or not. The government was reorganized into a tyrannical autocracy in a single cycle and most dissenters were eliminated with a single overwhelming show of power. Geography The region takes it's name from Kish, a single great asteroid composed of layers of ancient scrap metal. In truth it was once an arcology, home to millions, before being crushed into a ball and flung into space at the end of the war. Now a city has been welded out of derelict voidships into a crude ring around the asteroid, serving as home for the millions who settled in the sector. Now a palace has been carved around the obelisk of the corelock master. Beyond the ringcity there are hundreds of smaller asteroids and void settlements that rely on Kish for trade and protection. The Ophonic Mysteries Deep in the haze of the lost histories they say humans were once confined to a single planet. They say even then they understood the power and majesty of mighty Ophon. With primitive magics they crafted a crate of thunder and fought their way into the heavens. Not content to merely step closer and bask in the light, they caged the celestial core and seized its power for themselves. Here at the seat of power the core seers mastered the art and forged the traditions. Planet bound magi drew their power from ley lines, but the core seers tapped into the deepest well. They forged a pact with Ophon, letting its power sear into their souls, turning their eyes to ash in the process. Thus, a core seer is marked. The light of Ophon burns forever in their sockets. But these arts were lost after the great war, their magics were relegated to myth, or forgotten, at least until the Archmage awoke. Now the faith is alive and thriving in ring-city of Kish. Choirs sing their praises to Ophon and the ancient masters who spread humanity to the heavens, but still they look ever outward beyond the belt, eager for new horizons to cross.
