  1. Right, back on track now...

    Tidewater

On reaching the Tidewater district, you note that the town itself gets a little rougher, a little more briny in the air, as it's right close to the southern docks.
The Hook and Bar is not far from the dock area at all, perhaps a couple hundred yards at most. It doesn't look like the top of the line watering hole, but for the tougher dockside, it fits right in.
The young priest is waiting for you on a bench just outside the tavern. "Ah, good," he says. "You're here. I've already taken the liberty of purchasing supplies for the voyage. They're already being delivered to the ship as we speak. Now come, we must not dally. The captain wants to be out of the harbor before sunset, so there is not much time to waste. Is there anything else we should purchase before making our way to our ship?"

GM wordsAt this point, if anyone wants to purchase anything special, now's the time to speak up... I'll let you know if it's available, and if there's any markup/markdown.

Well... my notes are in Markdown, but that's beside the point...

  2. @Spacesong No worries. You do you. Life comes first.

I know how it is with work. I'm actually astonished that I can take my lunch break on schedule... and then there's my "off-phone" block where I can catch up on cases and whatnot. We're getting into a busy stretch, and everyone else takes theirs without so much as a regard to what the queue is like... except me. I'm not wired that way. I'm looking at "Team first" rather than "Me first", and while it makes me look good in the eyes of Management (which will help me when they get the Tier III level rolling, which is what I want to get... that and another level of Senior, either IB or II...), but it does take a toll. I worked 1130am-midnight on Friday due to a long (7.5+hr) call, no lunch break. Still not resolved, had to be escalated but had to get them back in some sort of operation beforehand. I know what that's like.

Damn good thing I have my three-week sabbatical (for being there 10 years) coming in July...

Ah, look at me... I'm rambling again...

Anyways, back to the... um... thing...

You do what you need to do. We're not at any major critical juncture here. This is more RP, getting to know each other, and getting you on your way.

  3. The temple itself is somewhat simple, set on a small peninsula jetting out into the harbor itself.
You are led into a smaller office-like room set off of the main chamber. At a modest desk sites the senior priest for the temple, leafing through papers and parchments. He waits until one of the lesser attendants ushers you all into the small room. Only then does he set the papers down, motions to the attendant and whispers in his ear. The attendant nods and leaves, closing the door behind him.
Only then does the priest speak.
"Thank you for coming," he says. "Especially on such short notice."
"One of our senior-most priests, my own mentor, recently passed on, and his remains were cremated, as per his wishes.
However, his wishes also stipulated that his remains be transported to a shrine to Procan located on a small island somewhere off the shoreline the shoreline well west of Seaton, his original station prior to assignment here."

As if on cue, the door opens, allowing a far younger priest to enter the office. The high priest nods at his appearance, and continues.
"One of the younger junior priests, Haresh, has been tasked to act as the keeper. However, the shrine is not staffed with any clergy at present, and it's been years since anyone from the temple has visited the area. As a precaution, we are calling upon the resources of outside help from adventurers, namely yourselves, to act as security for our young priest and his cargo."
"We have already arranged for your passage aboard a cargo vessel that will be making its way across this part of the Azure Sea. The island happens to be only a minor deviation from its normal course." He then opens a locked drawer to his desk, and takes out a set of pouches and a lockbox, setting them atop the papers on his desk. "I have an initial payment of ten gold each for your services. Once completed and when the ship makes dock at the first major port, Haresh here will then give you another fifteen gold to each of you." He hands the lockbox to Haresh, who then bows and is led out of the office.
The priest then stands, and hands out the initial payment pouches to everyone.
"I've also arranged for Haresh to have some extra funds to pay for supplies for your trip, as you have only passage and space onboard. They won't feed you, which may be a blessing unto itself." He chuckles at his attempt at a small joke.
With that, he then dismisses you from the office.

The attendant, who waited patiently for you outside, guides you to the main hall. "Haresh will meet you outside the Hook and Bar in the Tidewater district near the dock in two hours. From what I know, the ship is slated to leave just before sunset. Please do not be late, as these arrangements were very tough to make."

OOCGotta say, I'm loving this already.

  4. Right... Didn't expect it to be going on a week between posts from me, but it's been a rather busy weekend for me.

I'll get to reading everything Tuesday morning, and getting in the next piece of the adventure. After this week, I should be running truer to form.

  5. Location: Port Torvin, Hold of the Sea Princes

Two days ago, you were all roaming the streets of Port Torvin. Work, as of late, has been lax, and your funds have been dwindling over the past few weeks. You think to yourself with every coin taken from your purse, "If I don't get some work soon, I'll become one of those beggars in the streets, scraping for scraps."
However, word reaches your ears, whether through a notice on the community board or a messenger looking for you in particular, that the high priest of the temple devoted to Procan, the lord of oceans, is in need of experienced adventurers for a job opportunity. Curious, you take up the offer to at least listen to what's needed. You straighten and neaten yourselves up, put on your best airs, and march off to the temple.

    GM:

From here, you can set yourself up with how you arrived at Port Torvin. If you've been here already, describe where you were and what you were doing when the word reached your ear.

  6. No worries. It's been a heck of a week for me too. Start day is still slated for 1 May, 2 May at latest. Stay frosty!

Next couple of weeks may be a bit rough. Friday I have to drive out to get my kid from college, then Saturday we do Free Comic Day, then drive to Boston for a day trip and then to Salem to drop him back off... and then he's home (end of semester) middle of next week.

I've got Season 1 Episode 1 done, re-working Episode 2... then on to Season 2, 3, and the like. Everything evolving as we play.

  7. Thieves' Guild -- Port Torvin does have its share of organizations. Not all of them are as unprincipled as one would think. I'm putting it that there is one - small as it is - that isn't inclined to violence. Cons, the odd pickpocketing in crowds or breaking and entering, just so long as no one gets hurt. Take from those that can afford it. Some of what's obtained even goes to help others. Well, not those in the Beggars' Guild, they do pretty well for themselves as it is...

I'm not playing too much into the politics of the world. Back in that era, I doubt that really came into play, at least not when I was playing back then. Whether your father is from the Port Torvin area, or even from the Sea Princes' Hold region is up to you. It sounds like your ol' Dad wasn't around much, in fact likely despises you... that is, if he's kept tabs on you, which is likely, but probably not high on his list of what's important.

  8. Tier 2 - The Reserves

As I said, no one is completely out of it. I'm suitably impressed enough to keep the remaining seven around in the Reserves list in case an opening comes up.

    image.png.a1044fb34062b66b28d6c32c89dc8619.png

You all did excellent work with coming up with interesting concepts.

This was all a very tough decision.

I invite the Reserve members to stick around and watch, if they desire.

  9. Tier 1 - The "Ready for Prime Time Players"

This was a very tough choice once the positions started filling up.

In truth, it came down to the wire for the final slot. Both characters had decent abilities that they could bring to the party. I pondered this for days.

However, when it was coming down to "pull the bandage" time, I went and did the one thing I didn't want to do -- roll dice. And wouldn't you know, with ten rolls, it came up even. So I thought about the tie-breaker, and not leaving it up to dice. What was the tie-breaker? I'm not going to tell.

    Here is your Alpha Team:

    @GleefulNihilism, @Zen Gypsy, @Eagleheart, @codexgigas, @Spacesong, @Harding  --- Congratulations!

  10. Ah, the old two-sided die...

Of course, with my luck, it'll land on edge...

I'm hoping to resolve this before I head home from work... I want to go to my in-person gaming event (a one-shot of Monster of the Week hosted at a branch of my local Gaming/Comic/Pop Culture store (same company I went to for RSD, but their second store. Been itching to try this game for a while now.) with a clear head when it comes to this game. It may definitely result in a coin toss, but I won't feel good about either result.

If I could run it for seven, I would at this point. However, the campaign isn't designed for it.

(My SWADE WIP SpecOps game, though... designed for eight operators.)

  11. 14 hours ago, Spacesong said:

Thinking about adding this to that "reasons I'm not GMing on MW" thread tbh 😂

Wait I might have to disappoint people?!?!?! *panik attak"

Another reason not to be an author.. "What... I might have to kill one of my characters?"

Looking at you, Mr Butcher... Looking right at you...

  12. Basic Frequency

I'm looking to do typically 2-3 major posts a week to keep the campaign going.

Minor posts, such as conversations and such, will occur more frequently than that.

From you guys, I'm hoping to get about the same frequency, though I expect that you'll all hit that mark without a problem.

Of course, I'm not expecting massive doings on weekends.

    Combat

When a combat is going on, I'll be looking for more frequent posts, typically daily.

If I don't get any update on your character's intentions in combat by midnight, I'll assume your characters are taking a defensive action, a rest, or something that won't be detrimental to your character. I may take brief control to make sure the character is as out of danger as possible. If you'd already planned something that would go more than one round, I'll keep that going.

    Life

I know Life rears its ugly head -- work, family, friends, whatnot. I get it. It happens to me fairly often. I'm not going to say anything if you miss a few days, no worries.

If I don't see something from you (a post, a DM, what have you) for more than a week, though, I'll ping you to make sure you're still active and okay.

Also, if you're like me, you're probably already planning some sort of summer holiday or vacation. I know I am. So, if you already have plans that will affect posting for a while, let us know in the OOC channels and maybe a DM to me. We'll work on controlling your character.

If something is going to be very long-term away from the game, please do the same. We'll find a way to put your character on hiatus and bring in someone from the farm team.

Any questions? Let me now in the comments below!

  13. Selection Has Ended!

And I bet you're dying to know who made it...

First and foremost, I want to thank everyone for their submissions. I truly appreciate the enthusiasm toward the game. I wish I could accept most if not all, but that would make the game more cumbersome, and I didn't design the campaign to handle more than six.

    Now, without further ado...

  14. Selection Update

At present... I have most of the slots filled.

I'm proud to say that everyone has great concepts and character builds. I wish I could accept more than six, but that would get messy.

As it is, I'm hemming and hawing over Slot #6. Two great characters, each with great stuff to bring to the party.

Some good news is that anyone that doesn't make Tier 1 will be accepted into Tier 2 - The Reserves, who will be the first called up should an opening happen.

  15. Man, you guys aren't making it easy at all... Wow... I thought my little grid that I showed would make things easier.

    In reality, it doesn't...

I've even tallied votes from everyone...

As I said, not easy. This is the toughest thing a GM on here always goes through.
