Robert Veeder - Composer of Dirges
The situation was a nightmare, one of Robert's literal worst ones - the voices he had sometimes heard from a distance, another world, made manifest with a lugubrious chortle and a despicable slathering, chaos rather than the vaguely cryptic entreaties and very occasional offers of assistance, some voice from beyond the void made manifest and deadly and, from what he could tell, very very dangerous. The others rushed headlong towards it, Caspian seeming to heroically throw himself towards it even as Johanna called out sensically that running was likely their best hope.
And here he was... a decent problem solver, an inquiring mind who wanted to know, someone who could help the group in some ways, some times, but not much of a fighter. But the options seemed limited: fight, run (and let the others fight on their own) or try to tug Caspian free and with him whoever the "him" he was trying to save was. Running was no option, not until they were all free, at least, but fighting and rope-hauling were certainly not his strengths.
But he did what he could, running forward to the spot Johanna had fired from and then darting back as she had.
They were all lucky he didn't just shoot Caspian in the head, given how terrible his aim was.
At least he'd been right that he was utterly useless in this sort of situation. Cold comfort, that.
