IC - The Sunless Citadel

Jin hummed as Zorian reminded him of why they were there "oh right..."

As the group entered the tower they would note that the room was dark, the sunless citadel was living up to it's name.

Rebecca held her light to give some illumination to the room and all noted that it is a 30 foot tall hollowed out stone tower that is cobbled with cracked granite, but the intervening floors and stairs except for a couple of crumbled ledges are gone. The bodies of four goblins, apparently slain in combat are sprawled all over, one corpse stands with its back against the western wall, the spear that killed it still skewering it and holding it upright. Three wooden doors lead from this area, the door the group came in from, a door to their right and a door to their left. There also appears to be a stone in the left part of the wall that is sticking out.

Jin hummed "Whelp someone been through here recently, considering the dead goblins."

Brick hummed "the only question is which way did they got from here."

"Hey, Jin." Yopine directed the Bard towards the protruding stone. He'd proven himself to be mechanically adept with the pit trap. She wanted to see what he could make out of this additional oddity.

"No humming please. I'm trying to listen"

She spoke quietly and with a terse edge to her voice. They were behind enemy lines, now, in what might be the den of a monster they weren't ready to handle. Yopine was On The Job and her entire demeanor had changed. She seemed somehow even smaller as all cordial expressions evaporated from both her movements and her words. There had been an annoyed flinch as Rebecca lit the room up and the Gnome quickly stepped away from it.

The spear was bugging her. Who would just leave their weapon behind like that? Granted, piercing both a Goblin and the granite wall behind it had probably ruined the tip. But knowing that didn't keep her eyes from wandering in that direction.

Zorian stays quiet and helps Yopine investigate the room. He searches the goblin bodies, but mostly keeps his eyes open for danger. He then looks at the extruded stone in the wall, trying to move it if possible, before going over and listening at each of the other two doors.

"Keep your eyes and ears open everyone. Something ambushed these goblins."

Jin hummed as he looked over the stone "wonder what this means." He muttered

The group listened carefully and from the right doorway they hear what sounds like someone crying in a distance.

Rebecca hummed as she went over in that direction listened for a moment and then signaled to the others pointing to the door.

Brick hummed "Jin, over here. I think we got something."

Jin hummed as he went over and listened "someone crying?" He muttered.

He pushed open the door to open it up to a hallway that had three doors, one on the left, one on the right and one at the back. The crying got a little louder, it seemed to becoming from the far back door.

Jin looked at Yopine and Zorian "Do we check it out?"

"Yes, we check it out." Yopine started to move towards the crying, but stopped and looked down to her leg. The healing potion didn't clean blood from armor and that rat had sharp teeth. Someone in distress would be better met by a comforting figure, not one who already looked like a killer.

She glanced up at the noble paladin by her side. Now there was a face she'd want to see coming to her aid.

"You first?"

Zorian approaches the crying sound behind the door. When Yopine suggests he go first, she was even a little late. He had already pushed open the door and was striding towards the sound. Perhaps this is a trap, but maybe someone needs our help. He can't take the risk that her need is more urgent than his safety.

"Hello? Are you ok?"

Yopine nodded as Zorian was already moving to help. This was why she liked Adventurers. So many of them just wanted to help, regardless of personal cost. She stay close behind the Paladin has he ventured forward.

image.png.e0fc43a0d67a7b2cb04b25f5bb4e8b92.pngZorian and Yopine enter into the room, the large and oddly shaped chamber has a lot of glyphs and symbols scribed in bright green dye, the source of the dye appearing to be a couple of jars of the stuff on a wooden bench draped with green cloth near a metallic cage by the southern wall that looks like it had something bust out of it. A large pit in the center of the room shows that fire had been recently in there.

However the whimpering appears to be coming from a bedroll next to bench, there appears to be a Kobold sleeping in it, but he is squirming in his sleep almost as if his sleep is plagued by night terrors.

The Kobold does not respond to Zorian's call out.

Something highly imaginative began tingling in the back of Yopine's mind. She took in the room, still not able to rid herself of the image of that spear. It'd been used with brute force and then left behind as an afterthought. Almost as if its wielder had considered it a toy and was feeling whimsical about the casual slaughter. Something like whatever had been in that cage. Which someone seemed to think required additional reinforcement through glyphs.

With Zorian ahead, Yopine nodded back to the others that the way was clear. Urban legends and old superstitions were reaching for her attention as the Kobold thrashed. Demonic possession, infectious madness, and things that grew large and hairy when the moon was right. Ridiculous ideas, of course. The poor guy was just a heavy sleeper having a bad dream. She could let the others help him out for a minute. Yopine needed to listen with her other senses this time.

Favored TerrainYopine will be using Primeval Awareness. I think this counts as her Favored Terrain, which would put the range at 6 miles.

Zorian leaves investigating the cage and the dyes to the others. He looks at everyone else.

"Does anyone speak draconic? Most kobolds don't know common."

If no one volunteers, Zorian goes over and does his best to wake the kobold gently When the kobold wakes, he tries to talk to it in common.

"Are you ok? Can we help you?"

If it doesn't understand, he tries to mime that we are not here to hurt him.

  • 2 weeks later...

As Yopine opened her senses to the area, she would detect dragons, elementals, fiends and undead are present in the six-mile radius, The strongest detection belongs to the undead and there appears to be multiple sources.

Jin and the others enter into the chamber, Violet almost immediately locks onto the glyphs and symbols and seems to be reading them.

Brick mades a light grunt "I know a little bit; Violet I think is fluent because of her magic studies. Jin can read and understand because of his magic but can't speak it."

Jin made a noise "working on that however."

Brick hummed "but what's a Kobold doing in a goblin den?" He mused aloud

~~~
The Kobold awakens to the prodding of Zorian. He gasps in fright and say "no hurt Meepo..." he speaks in broken common
Jin made a noise as he walked over "whoa whoa, it's okay we're not going to hurt you."
Meepo made a whimpering noise.
Violet hummed "Here there be dragons..." She spoke aloud then looked at Meepo then at the cage "hmm..." She then looked at Meepo and approached and spoke in a strange hissing and throat clearing language
Meepo reacted with surprise and then spoke back in the same language but then became sad and continued alternating his words with whimpers
Violet seemed to become soft eyed and went over to Meepo and hissed to him in a comforting tone and then spoke some more words
Meepo then became attentive and made noises of excitement then pointed at a door across the way.
Violet hissed what sounded like a suggestive command.
Meepo made a noise and went over to the door.
Violet got a self-satisfied smile.
Jin slunk over to her "okay Violet what's you tell him..."
Violet gave him a look "didn't you have your comprehend language spell on?"
Jin hummed "yeah but you were whispering parts of it that I couldn't hear and I'm sure none of them understand so what's the story."
Violet rolled her eyes "well Meepo was the head keeper of a dragon for his tribe, a white wyrmling named Calcryx, however a few days ago the goblins attacked and stole the dragon killing several of his friends in the process."
Jin made a grimace "those bastards..."
Violet hummed "anyways I told him if we help him get the dragon back will his tribe allow us passage through their territory. He said he was sure his leader would agree to that and would take us to her." She looked towards where Meepo was standing "the path ahead has several traps and guards they have setup but he'll guide us through them as long as we stick with him, be nice and don't go wandering off.
Jin hummed "does he know anything about our targets."
Violet hummed as she turned towards Meepo and spoke something questioning in draconic.
Meepo shook his head "Meepo not know but Yusdrayl does."
Violet hummed "that answer that?"
Jin hummed "I think so," He hummed as he looked at the others "looks like we got a guided path forward shall we take it?"
"If Violet trust 'im, then yes. We take the help being offered." She looked Zorian for confirmation before turning to the only member of their group who'd spoken directly to Meepo.
"If you could, though. Ask him what his tribe actually does with the dragon? And maybe what's with all the undead around here?"
Violet would turn to Meepo and ask a few questions in draconic
Meepo was about to say something but then got thoughtful and then walked over to Violet and whispered something to her
Violet hummed as she nodded "Meepo says the dragon is the tribe's pet, they were going to raise it to make it stronger and fight for them however it's not exactly the most well behaved for a pet. A lot of those scar marks on Meepo are wounds he received from it when he was trying to care for it. The dragon has a real cold and superior attitude,"
Meepo looked down in shame
Violet hummed "as for the undead he doesn't know anything about them, but his leader might."
She turned away from Violet and put her sternest expression on Meepo.
"I've heard some dragons can be very intelligent. Maybe that's true, maybe not. But if this one doesn't want to fight for your tribe, maybe you should listen to it."
Cages and claw marks. Apparently the world ran on those two elements everywhere. She'd been taught that lesson in a classroom. Now she was being given the chance to see it personally.
"We can ask Calcryx when we find him... or her. Please stop referring to 'it'. Even attack dogs are allowed more identity. We should be moving, though. Walk-and-talk if you don't mind. I'd like to know if Calryx was responsible for those dead goblins or if there's more we should be worried about at the moment."
She'd picked up on dragons, plural. Along with damn near everything else that might qualify as their mystery monster. Normally an escaped dragon would have made for an easy equation here. Now it was anyone's guess.
