The Prisoner Cave

It turns out reports of increased orcs raids north of Blasingdell were true. The orc raid was swift and overwhelming. There was hardly even a shout of alarm among the others before the battle was already over. Daurant and several others were taken prisoner. You were chained up and smelly bags were shoved over your heads as you were marched for miles and miles. The next thing you knew you were in an overcrowded cell inside some kind of orc complex. Your equipment is placed out of reach in a chest. Over the following days, some of the other prisoners were freed as their families provided exorbitant ransoms in return. You and two others have no hope of getting ransoms, and you suspect the orcs grow tired of your upkeep.

However, you suspect there is something up, as the usual coming and going outside your cell has suddenly stopped and there is no one to keep an eye on you. No one has brought you bowls of rancid mush or jug of water for the day. You are sure you hear something strange going on in the complex, but have no way of knowing what it is.

You have two fellow prisoners in your cell with you, two halfings named Geradil and Courana from an isolated village a few miles from Blasindell. Perhaps their knowledge of the region could pass the time?

Daurant turns his head to the two hin, standing by the bars holding them in this forsaken cave.

"I dona know Geradil, Courana, I hear na movement out there... Me throat's getting dry. Mayhap someone's come, mayhap them tusks gone to find more folk to ransom."

Standing there in his tunic, he eyes the chest he thinks his gear is still inside of as he speaks. His hand goes to his chest, unconsciously seeking the symbol he always found there and the comfort that came with it. Grumbling as he realizes he'd done that again, he growls and grabs the bars, shaking them as hard as he can.

"So, how come you two hin to be in this hole? What brought you close enough to these parts to get ya nabbed?"

The bars are wooden, but quite strong. Daurant is unable to break them.

The two halflings have become listless in the last couple of days as it's dawned upon them that they won't escape. "We never dreamed of coming this far away from our village. We were on the road from Blasingdell when the orcs attacked. No one has heard of orc raids that far south in generations! We have legends in our village of a big complex just like this far to the north--I'm guessing these orcs have taken it over only recently."

Daurant weighs the hin's words and nods slowly and solemnly.

"The Soul Forger watches over us. I shall do all in me power to keep ye safe from these tusks so long as there is breath in me!

Come now, tell me more of this legendary complex if'n ya can. Mayhap there is truth in legend and it can serve us still. Fire tempers spirits and we must strive to forge strength from within sayth the All-Father!"

With that, Daurant looks about their cell for the countless time, trying to spot something he'd missed that he might use as a lever against the bars or otherwise...

There is not much in the cell to see. Two piles of filthy straw between the three of you for beds. Yesterday's bowls of much and empty water jug. There is a cast iron padlock on the door of your cell. Outside of the cell, the walls of the natural cavern are piled high with the loot the orcs have fathered during their raids--mostly trade goods like sacks of grain, crates of ore, bolts of cheap cloth and the like.

"It's an old tale in these parts. Centuries ago the dwarf clan leader Durgeddin the Black led refugees of yet another dwarf-orc war to a new stronghold in the trackless wilderness north of Blasingdell. From his hidden redoubt he named Khundrukar--the Glitterhame, we waged a decades-long vendetta against all orc-kind, until one day his enemies discovered his fortress and attacked it. Durgeddin and his followers perished, and much wealth was carried away by the conquering hoards. But it's said that the deepest and best-hidden vaults and armories escaped the looting, and that some of Durgeddin's extraordinary blades still wait in the darkness to be claimed. I wonder if this complex is the Glitterhame itself?"

As you chat, you hear a clatter drifting down the passage, which sounds an awful lot like a battle. Wolves are growling angrily. You've seen the chief of these orcs, a massive ogre called the Great Ulfe who has walked past the cell occasionally, keeps two wolves.

Daurant eyes narrow and a thin smile crosses his face at the mention of Durgeddin and Glitterhame. So the whisperings might be true! Blessings eternal be to you All-Father!

"Were that it was so! The tales of Durgeddin the Black..."

Daurant's words are cut short at the drifting sound of clattering. He holds a finger up to his lips in a sign of quiet and the then grins before bellowing out:

"Here! We are imprisoned! Free us and I shall join you laying low the tusks and that foul rotund barrel of an wolf fondling midget among giants they call master!"

Daurant leaps to the bars again and tries once more to break one apart, speaking to the two hin:

"Come, help me with these bars!"

The older halfling shushes Daurant. "I don't know what's going on up there, but if that doesn't draw more orcs from deeper in the complex your bellowing will!" They still seem to think this is a good opportunity to attempt an escape and try breaking down the bars with kicks of their own. As they batter at the bars with all their might, they do start gradually coming loose.

OOC: Taking 20 takes 2 minutes, which is 20 combat rounds.

Daurant roll at the older hin's word. Let them come! When the two his join him, he smiles broadly and puts some more gusto into his efforts.

"There you go, there's come strength in your inner forges after all! A little more effort and we'll get our hands on whatever makeshift arms we can from these ill gotten goods and make our way out of here.

The tusks will pay dearly for this humiliation!"

"Argh! By the Soul Forger, freedom! Come let us find you a path to safety!"

Daurant roars, tearing and pushing the broken bars aside, almost leaping out of the small cavern cell. He pauses to look around.

"Come, help me search this loot for me armor and axes!"

With that, before he begins to search the chamber and nearby chambers for this equipment, leading with the place he's surmised the most likely to hide his equipment if it was not carried away, he takes a deep breath and focuses, looking around for several breaths.

"There they be, my faithful blades! Faith and Fury!"

Daurant picks up a large dwarven waraxe in each hand and raises them both, turning them, as if examining them for any damage or marks before kissing the blade of each. Seemingly satisfied, he sets them down only to pick up a collection of metal plates, heavy boots, padded leathers and a large open, though only slightly, helm. Donning the padding and boots, he urges the hin:

"Come, friends, aid me in donning my armor and we shall be gone."

As soon as his armor is donned, and his backpack and equipment are on his back, Daurant picks up his axes and looks around for a light source the hin can use before he motions to the halflings to follow him.

"Keep several steps back and follow me."

Standard Action: Realize the halflings might not be able to see in the dark. Are these chambers lit? If not, can Daurant locate a torch or lantern and light it to hand one of the hin to hold?
